GamesFest - Oct 24th

Bit of an abuse of power on my part here, but for anyone in London, UK, there is a very interesting games convention on in Watford on Oct 24th. Here's their blurb:

Celebrities from the world of Gaming and Sci-Fi / Fantasy literature such as Graham McNeill, Gav Thorpe and Jervis Johnson will also be attending, with two Black library Seminars on the day.
The event is on Saturday 24th October 2009 and being held Watford Colosseum Rickmansworth Road ,Watford WD17 3JN.The nearest station is Watford junction and is well connected to the M1 and the M25 motorways. I'll be attending (legoburner) and hope that many of my London brethren will be going too so that we can help grow a great wargaming convention on our doorstep.

Dakka Painting Challenge

Armour

It's time for another Dakka Painting Challenge. The theme is 'Nitty Gritty Armor'. We've got a great prize lined up - $50 worth of painting products of your choice from AwesomePaintjob.com!

awesome paintjob

Off the assembly line she rolls, onto the train headed for combat. Six months in and the hatch barely opens any more and the view port has been bashed out by some local kids with rocks! The idler wheel is about to fall off and the skirt armor has holes the size of fists from all of the blasts it's taken! And the dust!! Oh the dust!

Dakka Exclusive - Next Dawn of War 2 Race Probably Revealed

I got a present in the post from THQ this morning, which was kind of them. It was a miniature, in a standard GW box, but what was more interesting was stuck to the back of the box outside the shrinkwrap - this label:

The model was... a Chaos terminator lord. I think it is a very safe assumption that chaos are coming in 2010 (MMX)! Some new levels with some variance would be most welcome and I'm really looking forward to the horde mode as well.

Welcome to the new look dakka homepage

I've finally had enough time to clean up the homepage a bit and have added some nice new features. Project logs will now get the attention they deserve and older articles will be highlighted frequently. You can now participate in daily polls on the right, see some of the top rated images from the gallery (updated every few minutes) and read the latest gaming headlines from Bell of Lost Souls and Tabletop Gaming News, following the links on the right direct to their websites.

Hopefully this will be a useful change to the old fairly stagnant homepage, so let me know what you think in the nuts and bolts forum. If you come across any bugs then let me know as well! Enjoy

'Get Your Teach On!'
-- a new Dakka Challenge

We've done painting and modeling challenges before, but now it's time for something a bit different.

We've recently added a Painting & Modeling Tutorials forum to Dakka to really highlight the tremendous quality and usefulness that tutorial threads about different facets of the wargaming hobby provide.

This particular challenge throws down the guantlet to anyone reading this to create the best possible hobby tutorial you can, both to help your fellow hobbyists out and to possibly win a tremendous prize to boot!

For full details and rules regarding the contest please visit THIS THREAD in the Dakka Painting & Modeling Tutorials forum.

We have our biggest prize ever offered this time, £130 (GBP) in-store credit plus free world-wide shipping from one of our amazing partners WaylandGames.co.uk. That's around $190 in US dollars!

A tremendously huge THANK YOU has to go out to the sponsors for this challenge, both WaylandGames.co.uk and Dakka user LBursley, who not only came up with the idea for this contest (just because he wants to see what amazing tutorials people can create) but also put up a tremendous amount of his own money as part of the prize!

Battlefoam's bags now have a name!

For those not aware, for the last month or so we've been running a contest in conjunction with Battlefoam.com to help them name their forthcoming miniature bags.

Well, thanks to the enthusiasm of our community (not to mention fantastic prizes), we got a staggering number of entries (over 600 when the dust finally settled).

But the contest is now over and Battlefoam has made the agonizingly tough decision. In the end, they chose one person's entries for both their bags, so that person will be winning BOTH of these brand new bags, plus the foam to go inside them. A prize worth over $400!!!

But Battlefoam was simply blown away by the quantity and quality of entries that they decided, completely unannounced, to also award prizes for their 2nd and 3rd favorite entries along with a prize for the most humorous entry. That means four different Dakka members are walking away with a prize!

Are you dying to know who won the prizes and what the names of the new bags are yet?

Then CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT!

Gorgon's amazing Genestealer Cult Army Profile

If you haven't checked in a while, Dakka has built up a pretty nice array of army profiles from a variety of different users.

Recently, Dakka member Gorgon posted an army profile for his 2008 Baltimore Grand Tournament Warhammer 40,000 Genestealer Cult army that took home the award for best appearance.

It is an absolutely stunning army, with great ideas and conversions found in every unit and his army profile is well written and lets you know the background behind why and how he built the army.

If you haven't taken the time to check out this amazing army profile, I highly recommend you take a moment to do so.

Click Here to See More of Gorgon's Genestealer Cult Army Profile

And remember, the ability to post an army profile on Dakka is open (and free) to absolutely anyone, and its easier than ever now that you can link to photos directly out of our gallery (hosting pictures in our gallery is also free to everyone).

Creating an army profile does require that you learn a tiny bit of wiki coding, but it is really much easier than you think! You can get started by reading our wiki articles tutorial and you can always send a private message to any one of our article moderators or administrators if you ever have any questions regarding the wiki article system.

I'm on 40k Radio talking INAT FAQ

I was lucky enough to be invited onto the 40k Radio podcast to do a little Q&A session about the Independent National Tournament Warhammer 40,000 FAQ I helped to produce for Adepticon.

Whether you're attending Adepticon or not and whether you love or hate the FAQ, hopefully you'll find the interview informative.

For the record, it is Episode 31 and my segment starts around 21 minutes in. Head on over to www.40k Radio.com or onto iTunes to find their podcast.

If you'd like to comment or discuss anything you heard regarding the FAQ, you can do so in this thread, or in the master INAT FAQ 2.1 thread.

Help name Battle Foam's new bags and win a prize!

Dakka is working along with battlefoam.com to run a contest to help name their brand new miniature carrying bags that are soon to be released.

Here's a rough mock-up of what the two cases will look like:

Whoever suggests the name they end up using for each bag will win from them $100 of their Custom Foam Trays as well as the actual bag they helped to name. Yes, the winner(s) will receive the very first Battle Foam bag two weeks before anyone else does!

To read the full list of contest rules and find out how to submit your entries, please visit this thread in the News and Rumors forum.

The winner(s) will be announced on February 23rd, so don't wait too long to get your entries in!

Dakka's Articles

I've been meaning to post about this for a while, but dakka's articles listing now has over 350 articles. There are some real gems of tactical advice, modeling and painting advice, great army profiles and general interesting things there, almost all of which have been added by the dakka community and articles team.

A lot of the time the articles go unappreciated by people who just check out the forum, so I thought I'd highlight them and even if the articles home page does not change that often, there are constantly updates and new articles are being added in the background at the rate of 2-3 per day.

Anybody (even lurkers) can add an article, and all the information you need can be found on the left hand side of the articles section of dakka so check it out if you have anything wargaming related that you want to share with the world.

Mekboy Challenges dare you to create the coolest converted miniature you possibly can within the confines of the contest theme and rules. That means painting your submission is not strictly required as this contest is focused mainly on the conversion aspect of the hobby.
