There was, in the late 90s of early 00s, a little bit of text , don't think more than a page, maybe even half a page that expanded on the story of Russ and lion's feud.

It continues past the infamous brawl and while I don't remember much, one bit that stood out was on Terra after the heresy Russ offers his chest to lion due to his brother's anger at their lateness to the siege. Lion skewers one of his hearts and almost does the second before turning aside at the last minute.

They made up after that and were close until lion disappeared.

I'd love to be able to find that, but I've got no frame of reference. It was imo a far superior story to the later herey retcons.

-says only Horus and the Lion had more victories than Russ and that annoyed him

-has it coming to a head pre-heresy on Dulan when they’ve both been send to cleanse its ruler Durath and disagree on strategy.

-Lion gets there first and kills Durath, Russ is upset and sucker punches him, then they have an inconclusive wrestle for a day and a night, until Russ finds it funny and starts laughing, at which point Lion sucker punches him back, knocking him unconscious.

-Johnson considers this honour satisfied but Russ starts a feud (Dark Angels have left before he wakes up)

-now every time the legions/chapters meet they have champions fight a duel.

The index ignores the stuff in the story I'm referring to. And the story is basically forgotten by gw, preferring to go hard down the index route.

If you can find a copy of the issue, it actually makes Russ very sympathetic and reasonable after the heresy and creates a great bond between the two of them that is missing from the later stories.

Edit: no wonder I liked it, it was written by bill king.

No problem. As for finding one Ebay or FB groups are probably best bet, dont think they are quite that far back uploading old WDs yet on the Warhammer Vault.

Nothing has contradicted it so depends on what your definition of canon is. For canon does it need to be constantly reposted or is it just if it's not contradicted still valid?

Pretty sure a version of it is repeated in one of the Primarch novels.

Considering the blossoming nature of 40k, with lots of authors not always taking in account the works of others, I'd say it is canon as long as no one officially contradicted it. I guess.

Only partly. The key aspects of Lion being an ass and Russ being reasonable, of post heresy is not covered.

The story has been very much flanderised into angry wolf man is angry.

I much prefer this story where both of them have their ups and downs.

The Internet Archive has a whole bunch of WD's online. I looked, but couldn't find 233.. but 232 is May and they list Jun as 234. I saw a small blip in 232 about DA codex coming out, but didn't see any specific articles about Russ and Lion, or background

I don't have a copy of it, but if anyone here does and would be willing to take a photo of the text you can read the story.

It was a neat little story like they used to do in outboxes in old codexes. It was short but covered a lot. It was too small to be considered an article - it was just a box pop out inside an article.
