recently, I found a collection of old warhammer rulebooks, and I've been going through those and looking at older editions of this game to see what all the hype is about. but as I've been looking through this, there's been a lot of homebrewed stuff in there (like Codex: Skaven or Codex: Chaos Sororitas). but amidst all these books, official and otherwise, I stumbled across a book labeled Codex: Genestealers which seems to be from all the way back in third edition. It's a magazine scan, which puts it above other such books I've seen, but it's not WD... I think it came from the Citadel Journal? and I believe that would put this at semi-official status, since it was published in a GW publication?

anyone else familiar with this 3rd edition Codex: Genestealers? looking through it, the army list seems well-made and authentic to RT and 2nd edition GSC lists, but I'm interested in what more experienced players have to say about it

Yep, that's from the Citadel Journal.
I forget wich issue #, but I know it's upstairs in my bookshelf.

I had a moderate amount of fun with it.
The main draw for me was the conversions & using a 1930s Coupe model for my gangster styled cult.

oooh. i wanna play older editions of 40k at some point and so naturally i'll be playing genestealers where i can— that is to say, i really should start figuring out my limos ahead of time!

i really hope GW gives us back our limos at some point. they're such an iconic part of the army to leave out. with the exception of hierodules (which you could use a primus for), everything in this list can still be played today, in some form or another

Automatically Appended Next Post:
oh, while I'm talking about old unofficial GSC stuff I've found, I really love the "Realms of Chaos: Genestealers of Zadgramelek" book, which seeks to bring chaos back to GSC (in 2nd/3rd edition) by way of giving them their own minor chaos god to worship

it's such a weird and creative little book, and as someone who finds the idea of chaos genestealer cults really fascinating, i really love something like this

It's the rules from Citadel journal 40, the only genestealer cults rules in the whole edition. Additionally, as the blurb mentions, there's a second half in issue 41. As for full codexes for a given edition, Lexicanum's Edition pages usually give you good idea of what is where.

oh! thanks for pointing that out, i never would have realized that there was more to this "book", since the PDF i have is already a full army list, but the second half is really interesting, too, particularly for having named characters (which modern day GSC still lack!!)

My favourite part of the list was the Young Patriarch. Even in 3rd I was craving an RPG style progression system, and I think it took until 4th to get one.

If I remember correctly, he was faster, and even perhaps a bit stronger in hand to hand, but he didn't have the psychic mastery of the Patriarch.

At the time, I had both metal patriarch models- the running one and the one on the throne. So the runner was the young model.

I still have them, but now I also have two plastic patriarchs and an old metal Broodlord, so lots of options. Enough models to rep all 5 experience levels.

It was essentially an optional or experimental list, it is in Citadel Journal issues 40 and 41. Citadel Journal did have some "Chapter Approved" official rules (such as the Arbites list in issue 29) but most were experimental and to be used by prior agreement by both players.

Harlequins also had a list in Citadel Journal, and there was an alternate Sisters of Battle list.

There is. Issues 01-28 are 2nd edition, 29-50 are 3rd edition.
