New year, new blog! Last year I did a Tallarn Desert Raiders blog but stopped short after being thoroughly unimpressed with 10e. I have since switched off 40K in favor of Battletech so my army now sits collecting dust. With the release of Old World coming, I thought it would be good motivation to start another one and track my progress to an initial 1k points list before hopefully expanding to 2k.

Here is my current 1k list, built using the Mortuary Cult rules
High Priest level 4
Mortuary Priest w/BSB

Skeleton Warriors X21
Spears/Light Armor/Banner/Champ

Skeleton Warriors X21
Spears/Light Armor/Banner/Champ

Skeleton Archers X20

Skeleton Chariot X4
Banner

Tomb Scorpion/Ambusher/Dwelling

Casket of Souls

That being said, please let me introduce my first model. A skeletal chariot was my test model for figuring out the color scheme. I wanted to try something I don't have much experience with, so I used a lot of gold and some white. I am pleased with how it turned out, but I am not quite sure how to make the white a bit more shadowed. Despite the TK aesthetic of being old and decrepit, I prefer a newer and shinier look for their equipment. In my mind, although the skeletons are old and dusty, that doesn't mean their equipment has to be. Please excuse my poor picture quality, I've never been very good at taking photos.

Now that the test chariot is finished, I will be focusing on completing the skittles that make up most of the army, while painting the other models occasionally to break up the monotony of painting so many infantry models.

I like the colour scheme, looking forward to seeing the army come together. Nice basing too.

I began working on some infantry, and I am quite pleased with how they came out. I would like to do some shading and highlighting on all the gold to give it more contrast, but there is so much of it that I really think it would slow down my painting too much. I'm a very slow painter, so I find it hard to find that line between time:effort when painting models, specially considering the high model count of the army. So these will do for now!

I particularly enjoy the range of poses I am able to get with these guys, it really makes them much more dynamic on the table.

Next I'll be taking a small break from infantry to work on my High Priest and the Casket of Souls before diving back in to tackle more of the infantry!

That red and gold color scheme really works well for these minis.

Just a small update today, I finished my general and will be working towards my Casket of Souls before heading back down to knock out a bulk of the infantry.

Finished my Casket of Souls, about 99% done. There are some small touch ups and details I have to do. I love how the skulls came out. Once I finish the 1k list I'll go back with my airbrush to do some like OSL from the skulls around the casket.

Next up is skittles. Lots and lots of skittles.

Another small update, I finished my second Liche Priest.

I am making good progress on my 1k list, but I still have a lot of skittles to go!

The colour scheme on these is looking really good, and you're making great progress!

I've not sat down and thought out what army list I'm aiming for yet... I might do that tonight to give me some focus on next steps.

That's what helped me figure out what to print and paint. I have a strict rule of not assembling or playing with models that aren't painted. So for me, creating a list was necessary so I'm not spending time painting models that I'm not going to use. I want to get to 1k so I can at least start playing some games!

Delusions?! How dare you sir.

A rather big update here. I finished a full block of 21 skittles, plus a few extra for the next block.

I love these sculpts, and how poseable they are. I have to do a bit of cutting to get all the arms to fit due to how they were designed, but each skeleton looks unique

A few stragglers left over for when I start the next block of skittles. I went a little too hard on the glowing eyes effect, so they look more like evil racoons. I'll remind myself to be a little more careful with how heavily I go the glow around the eyes.

Next up I'm working on one of the detachment of 10 archers. After that I'll tackle the Tomb Scorpion, then it's back to skittles to finish out the list.

These are coming on really nicely!

The evil racoons strike again! I have completed a squad of 10 archers, and yet again I went too hard on the glowing eyes so they look like racoons. Next time will be better I promise!

I am realizing that my phone sucks for focusing during macro shots, not sure why the edges are so blurred.

Next up is the Tomb Scorpion! Excited to get this one done, it's my favorite unit in the codex.

Tomb Scorpion time! This model was surprisingly easy to paint, I had put it off until I had some more practice with the color scheme of the army so by the time I came to it I already had idea of what colors to do.

Unfortunately my camera seems have done a pretty gakky job in capturing the colors, as it makes the gold of the armor and the tan of the carapace blend in a lot, but in person there's a much more stark contrast between the two.

I'm very happy with this, and next up I've got one chariot with a banner to do and then I'll at least be ready to play some 500pt games.

Looking good my dude! Great base work and colours are very evocative. They'll look great on the table - hope you have fun playing with them!

With this update I finally have enough to play a 500pt game, so I've decided to take a break to paint the sides of the bases to finally call these models complete. Here are a few shots of the chariot with a banner. It came out nicely but it was a bit difficult to place the banner and 2 models on the chariot.

Here's an image of everything I have painted so far.

Well done! Painting the base edges will complete them nicely

I'm definitely digging your Tomb Kings! If I was to play Old World, Tomb Kings would be the army I'd want to play. I love the whole undead Egyptian theme (part of why I have Empire of Dust in Kings of War).

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

Love the white and red scheme - it looks so Egyptian but without being the classic blue-and-gold we all default to.

See what's on my painting table Now painting: Radukar the Wolf

I was considering those models when I was looking to start this army. Do you have any pictures of yours?

Thank you. I was quite surprised with the lack of diversity in color schemes when I was looking for inspiration.

No pics, sadly, as they are unpainted thus far. They are also fairly low priority for paint since nobody in my area seems to be playing Kings of War anymore (or if they are I don't know about it).
