Okay the other day up at my favorite game shop there was a convorsation about how big of a 40k battle is to big, when one of the people in the convorsation added that he had heard a rumor that GW was going to be releasing a new suppliment for 40k that was going to give new rules for playing "epic" sized battles with 40k scale minis. I am wanting to know just how true is this, and if they are going to do this are the rules for force organization going to be similar to the force organization that is used in WHFB?

It could be done by making 1 figure = 1 squad, but it would not have the same visual appeal as proper "Epic."

what I am saying is playing battles over 3500 in points. after you fill the current standard force organization chart you can only go so large with some armies. What I am getting at is a force organization chart like what is used in WHFB that can grow with the number of points that you choose to take in your army. So that you caould field a whole SM battle company if you wanted to, and not the standard of 2HQ, 3Elite, 6 Troop, 3 FA, 3HS

From what we know it's called Warhammer 40,000 Apocalypse, and would be a ruleset in the same style as Cities of Death (ie. uses the main rules, but makes amendments and changes to make it a slightly different game). All the rumours of plastic Baneblades and Stompaz go with it.

I talked to a very knowledeable GW black shirt here at the LA battle bunker (who is very in tune with the game and community, but any of these rumors are just that, rumors until we see more) and he told me that yes, the plasitc baneblade would deffinately be built and would be usable (along with most forgeworld scale models, assumably) in a new scaled up rules set similar to city fight as H.B.M.C. stated. It will be based around a 3000 points limit (as i have been told) and will allow for super heavy units and air combat, as i understand it. How this will affect the force org chart, i could not say.
Also, i have heard that this rules expansion will include "advanced" rules for veteran gamers. From what i understand this will include rules similar to some of those from 2nd ed, ie: overwatch, specialty greandes, etc. (but hoefully more streamilned than the older, clunkier system) it could go so far as to include things like alterante unit activation, etc. but that is just speculation.
we will have to wait and see, but i think it would be great to enable gamers to scale things up and use those brillian forgeworld models on more game tables. (although GW's motivation for the move would very likely be largely motivated by building plastic versions of the forgeowrld sculpts and then selling them en masse, thereby saving money on new sculpts and enjecting a whole new element into the game for larger and more expensive armies, bu that is ok with me, i would like to play the big battles out and the models are worth my dollar, but that is just my opinion).

Okay... so with that being said it is just a rumor but still a possibility for us veterans that like to play MEGA battles. As well as with the rumors floating around with the plastic baneblade and stompaz are the Eldar going to be getting something along the lines of the scorpion superheavy grav tank? One would like to hope and dream.

What Gav Thorpe said during the Q&A session at Gamesday Chicago is that they are planning some sort of Trench combat system(suck it, MEQs) down the line, which really would fit the bill of larger 2000+ point battles. I also wonder if they will ever do something as in depth as General's Compendium for 40K.

So a max of 3000 points? That seems odd, especially given super-heavies are in the 600+ or so point mark, meaning that the game wouldn't be any larger, it would just be a 2000 point army with a big tank and a couple of extra toys. No, no, no. Big games are 4-5000+, where you can bring a 3000 point army (which is huge) and still have enough points over for lots of 'big' things, or just more little things.
Or we could all just do what our group does every blue moon and play a multiplayer game with 40,000 points a side. That's always a fun (if time consuming) thing to do...

I know the idea of someone who works for GW that is well informed and up to speed on the game may seem strange, however, he is a smart guy, and has been very involved in and loved the hobby long before he became a part of the company. He really does keep his ear to the ground and uses of all his resources to stay abreast of what is coming up in the hobby.
at any rate, as i said, this is strictly what i was told. it may or may not be accurate, and even if it is, it may change from here to launch. And 3000 points is what i was told, i remember that bit explicitly. That could entail a few things,
1.) the GW employee i spoke to was wrong, although as i said, he loves the hobby and keeps himself up to speed. 2.) the game really wont change much other than the addition of a few extra units and one, big tank, titan, bio tian, stompa, etc. 3.) that the big toys will have different rules and points costs than the currant FW rules sets.
but, as I said, just rumors that i got first hand followed by my own speculation. take it with a grain of salt.

our local indypendant-gaming-clerk visited the Gamesday in Köln and attended to a trader-conference. so when he got back I asked him about some rumours I heard here on Dakka and he told me that there wasn't such a thing as a plastic baneblade coming soon.
Oh, yeah and now new Ork 'Dex before summer 07.

Ah, GW. Lets increase the scale of the game (say, double it roughly), and while we're at it, throw in all sorts of advanced rules. That makes lots of sense and should really ease gameplay. Really. I hope they have half a brain to release the hyperdetailed ruleset *separate* from any "apocalyptic" scale game. If I want clunky, 4000pt hyperdetailed games, I'll go play the original Rogue Trader ruleset, or even 40kv2. Though it would be nice for GW to finally release this ruleset that they've been dangling for years: "It will be in the hardbound rulebook. Oops, not there, we'll publish it online. Ah, well, perhaps not. Buy a subscription to WD, it's going to be in a future issue. Or not. Now we're going to use it with rules that allow you to take armies twice as big!" Anyhow, not holding my breath until I actually see the rules the Baneblade sprues. It would also be nice to see GW actually take care of and release updated 'dexes for the armies in sore need of 'em (ie: Orks).

i agree, i would hope that these two new alternate rules sets (if indeed they are really works in progress) do not come together as a bigger, more detailed rules set would be a royal pain in the arse.
however, i was told that the baneblade was a sure thing, however, you never know till you hold the thing in your hand.
however, i believe that variety can only add to the game and if there are new rules sets for larger scale games ocmplete with the big toys and perhaps a secondary set for the currant skirmish scale rules with more tactical options available for those player who wish to use them, then i am all for it.

Are you sure about this part? It seems rules for BIG 40K would want to eliminate and simplify. Overwatch, grenades and such would be more likely to come in rules for skirmish 40k. Just a thought. Not really sure we need rules for big 40k, mega battles usually went fine with the normal rules and few additions.
