FOR THIS POLL, PLEASE ANSWER HOW YOU CHOOSE TO PLAY THE GAME, NOT NECESSARILY WHAT THE RULES AS WRITTEN (RAW) SAY.

The 'Pile In' Moves rule on page 44 of the rulebook says: "At the end of each Assault phase, models in units that were locked, but which are not themselves engaged in combat MUST move up to 6 [inches] in an attempt to contact enemy that were in the same combat."

The Assault Phase Summary on page 36 of the rulebook says:

"RESOLVE COMBATS
1. Pick a combat.
[Steps 2-5]
6. Pile In. If units are still locked in close combat then any models not in base-to-base contact are moved 6 [inches] towards the enemy to continue the fight next turn.
7. Repeat until all combats have been resolved."

QUESTION: When you play, at what point during the Assault phase do you make Pile In moves: at the end of each individual combat, or at the end of the Assault Phase? Also, if a victorious unit consolidates into a previously unlocked enemy unit[s] (creating a new Assault), do both sides immediately make a Pile In move?

OPTION A. I follow the rules text presented on page 44: All Pile In moves are performed at the end of the Assault Phase (after all combats have been fought and resolved). Also, if a victorious unit consolidates into a previously unlocked enemy unit[s] (creating a new Assault), both sides immediately make a Pile In move.

OPTION B. I follow the rules text presented on page 44: All Pile In moves are performed at the end of the Assault Phase (after all combats have been fought and resolved). However, if a victorious unit consolidates into a previously unlocked enemy unit[s] (creating a new Assault), neither side makes a Pile In move this Assault Phase.

OPTION C. I follow the Assault Phase Summary on page 36: Pile In moves are made at Step 6 of each individual close combat. Also, if a victorious unit consolidates into a previously unlocked enemy unit[s] (creating a new Assault), both sides immediately make a Pile In move.

OPTION D. I follow the Assault Phase Summary on page 36: Pile In moves are made at Step 6 of each individual close combat. However, if a victorious unit consolidates into a previously unlocked enemy unit[s] (creating a new Assault), neither side makes a Pile In move this Assault Phase.

OPTION E. Something else entirely: reply exactly what it is below.

Dunno, guess we just went for the summary to the exclusion of the text, as it's easier to digest. Normally I'm an advocate of following the actual text instead of summaries though.

There are a lot of awkward situations that occur from the way we play things. demon prince can wipe a unit out and consolidate onto the end of another unit, kill everything in his killzone next turn and THEN get the powerfist piled into him. I am not sure that's an intended consequence, and kinda think we should follow the RAW in the future of waiting on all consolidations until the end of the whole phase.

From a 'flow of the game' perspective, I think they ought to adjust it so that all pilein moves happen in the subsequent movement phase (just prior to the assault). That way there's only ever one pilein move AND it makes sense when it happens (instead of Assault potentially consisting of your assault move, plus a 6" pilein - seems a bit ungainly to me).

D: There is only a pile in between units that fought each other  in close combat.

we always resolved one combat at a time, start to finish. Tht way, you had to be careful in choosing what order you wanted assaults to take place in, since the consolidation move happened after each individual combat. As a rule, i have always played it that whichever player's tirn it was, picked the order of assaults.

But we have never played assaults wherein units that were not engaged in combat that were consolidated into then had to make a pile in move. They simply remained in place until the next round of combat was resolved.
