Yeah, I'm really Lost and Damned. Especially now that LatD went to search for the lost (sheesh, those bad puns just keep on coming, don't they...) Squat Beer Festival. But once you're Lost, you're Lost for ever. And Damned too.
This is supposed to be a miniature for my GD entry sometime in the not very distant future, part of a lager squad of very special Big Mutants (like there's any other type). He's named Wharghhh. Or will be when I finish him. Still very WIP. Forgive the poor quality of those photos, I can't be bothered with assembling a light tent for WIP's.

No cylindrical smoking item for you. The body was sculpted with Brown Stuff from Reaper and the canisters with Magic Sculpt. The chippings on the canisters are intentional. That's why it looks a bit like cork now.

The photos are pretty good and far away from piss poor. I would be glad if erveryone here could come to that standard. What bothers me a bit is his pose which is not really aggrisve. And I suggest more metal shining through some where. He got the 5 stars on creepy chaos monster but you should keep in mind that GD are one recently by a lot of free hand works (the more the better it seems not a trend I like) so tatoos maybe an option here.

Before, the model looked awesome despite the enormous traps and disproportionately small arms because of the "wraith-y" pose. Now, with legs, the atrophied arms bother me more.
Still absolutely stunning work, though.
Edit:
Eh, actually the arms are a huge part of what makes it original.

They're wandering in the Chaos Wastes searching for someone who would cast them. The only polish company that does casting on demand acts a bit... silly, so I'm currently considering other, foreign possibilities. I assure you'll be the first to know when they're available.

The body is finished. I still need to attach the tanks (currently reconsidering the size of those) and sculpt the feet (only when I decide on the final shape of the base). Speaking of which, should I go with a standard 40mm base with the pipe sticking out like on the earlier version, or should I do a full plinth-style base like some of those GD entries have?

Your inquisitiveness is astounding. I guess I'll have to do the rivets...
I'm not yet sold on plinth idea mainly because he's supposed to be a member of a unit. Unless I decide to enter him as a single miniature he would look strange with an OTT base. One thing I know for sure is that he's going to be crouching on a mutilated, wingless aquilla. I'll just have to get some milliput or Magic Sculpt to do that (I'm not going to waste Brown Stuff on things like that).

Oh, I must have missed that fact.
Honestly though, I think the look you've created is so distinctive that you really would be better off entering him as a single mini. Having a squad of them, even if they're not the same, only dilutes the effect.

In my opinion, go for the playable base over the display pedestal. I think it's important from the standpoint of context, to remind the viewer that it's a piece of a game and not a straight-on sculptural object (which it also certainly qualifies as, beautiful work). The real power of the piece comes from viewing it in context of the universe it comes out of and shares with the rest of us, 40k, and and resides in your vision of that shared space.
The piece needs to exist as a working object. Terrific work.

Reminds me of a joke I heard-
Q: How many 40k players does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Since I'm laden with commissions right now I don't think I can put enough time and effort into sculpting Creeps friends. Instead I'll try and show some of the commissioned work.
Here we have some concepts for a Strigany vampire.
The customer choose the first one to be the lord and I think the second one make a nice thrall. It's a Lustrian themed army so some more conceptual work is in order.
Here's a very early stage of sculpting. Just a few hours really...

I have to redesign the canisters to look more 40K-ish (no skulls involved).
The vamp is based on a large base simply because I don't have a normal one. Though a 40mm mini might have stability issues on a 20mm base...

HMV Deathcow, groovy Appreciate the smashy warhammer and armor plates particularly. The 'face' seems a bit minimalist (as in, looks like not a lot of work done to it?) which works for the chaos angle - no lips, exposed teeth, etc - but unsure for the beast angle. I do like it though, for the "freakshow" spookiness of his face - Salvage

I don't see what the problem that people have with HMV's feet. Just because we haven't seen anything in this thread other than small clawed, animal-like feet doesn't mean that he can't sculpt anything else. I mean, maybe he can, maybe he can't - but just because there are no examples of it in this thread isn't evidence that he can't do it.

I don't think I've ever seen an amateur sculpter with anything approaching your grasp of anatomy and proportions. Amazing work. The only improvement I might suggest is that you could try and attempt reproportionalizing (not a word I know) the muscle structure based on the pose. For example, making the abdominal muscles on the less hunched side of the third vampire slightly less prominent as they would be under less stress.

Post by: two_heads_talking
good lord that musculature is pristine.
as for the hands vs feet debate, the hands are so big and the feet so small that it does really throw it off for me.
