Inso,

What are you going to call him?

Cheers,

CB

He's going to be called War Golem.

I'll sort out some fluff to go with him but he is basically the souls of a bunch of ancestors that are released from the anvil that he carries and coalesce into a physical form... for when the going gets tough and the wisdom and strength of the ancestors is required .

I need to tidy a few ideas up... but that's basically it .

I've been working on some proxy Taurox lately. They are based on Meng "World War Toon", Tiger 1, tanks. I decided to take the fixed weapon option (The basic Taurox can have fixed weapons or weapons in a turret) to make them both different and not need a turret.

I knocked together a test vehicle, thought it looked all right so I repeated the idea. Only one has wheels/tracks fitted at the moment (the test vehicle) because they'll have to be off for painting. Anyway... four WIP, Proxy Taurox:

I still have some filling to do and a few small details to add but they are practically there .

I suddenly decided that I needed to have a Stormlord in my Squat army but I didn't think that the existing Stormlord looked like it could house 40 troops so I thought... "I know, I'll build a Leviathan that counts as a Stormlord".

To cut a long story short, here's where I am at the moment. Most of the structure is finished but I need to add the drivetrain, track guards, side sponsons, weapons and details:

So much more to do... but it's getting there .

Oh wow - that storm lord is absolutely beautiful. Getting dune crawler vibes - very squatty!

Post by: gobert

That stormlord looks great, and you’re only a tow hook away from a land train too!

Good stuff coming with the taurprox too. It’s real impressive the rate at which you knock out these builds!

The Squats of Inso's Reach @ 2019/11/09 11:14:52

Post by: Inso

@tzurk - I wanted a Stormlord that looked like it could carry 40 troops (in addition to the heavy weapons) and harked back to the Epic days of Leviathans and Land Trains so that's what I have aimed for

@gobert - I wouldn't say I crank them out... I just get an urge to build, sometimes, and while I have the urge I build stuff. It doesn't happen that often so I have to make the most of it .

As for the Stormlord, in order to carry on with the build, it was necessary to attach the wheels and tracks so that I could work out dimensions:

Now that they are fitted, I can start thinking about the track guards and side sponsons. With the side sponsons in mind, I decided it would be easier to just order the Baneblade sponsons because it would give me all the weapons and a means of fitting them (even if I converted things a bit) so I have ordered one of these and am waiting for its arrival:

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Imperial-Guard-Baneblade-Sponsons-And-Accessories

In the meantime, I can start filling and sanding if I need to .

Stormlord looks very cool! The top section reminds me of some sort of a command centre!

The Squats of Inso's Reach @ 2019/11/12 19:22:21

Post by: Inso

Cheers ... The plan was to build a mobile command centre so it seems to be working .

I received the sponson sprues today so I've started to build those up now :

The las-turrets aren't fitted yet... but it's a start

Starting to shape up! The sponsons fit really well; will be great to see it all come together. Front gun looking fierce too

In order to make sure that there were solid casts of the miniatures, they were cast at low pressure, with no heat, in resin first. That way, if the greens were destroyed during the metal casting process, there were still resin masters that could be used. Also, the resin onse are easier to convert so it means that I can work on them for more options, easier than chopping up metal ones .

It's been a long time since I worked on any of the standard infantry, for my army so it is nice to be able to show off the command squad for the third infantry platoon:

I have now started working on all of the heavy weapon teams for the platoon... five in all (two for the infantry squads and 3 for the heavy weapon squad).

What happens now the KS ended? Are you finished with the alternate H. weapons? I don't need any Squats so wasn't up for jumping in sadly.

Cheers .

As for the Kickstarter... There are three heavy weapon options (Lascannon, HMG and Missile Launcher). Once I've had a bit of a break, all sorts of other bits and bobs are planned for the range (that will be available from Macrocosm Miniatures) so that a platoon can be finished with a range of miniatures. I am planning to make a special weapon trooper with a selection of weapons, a comms trooper, a few extra las-gunners and a few additional Sgts. I also hope to sculpt a few officers and characters. Once this is all done, I will hopefully sculpt all of the heavy and special weapon options for Codex Astra Militarum so that the existing troopers have extra weapons to hold. Then... Extra heavy/specialist troopers...

... I just need a rest for a little while .

I thought I'd get some images of the army, as it stands at the moment. There is still a bit to go but this is where it's at :

Veteran Company: https://i.imgur.com/yAqF2yN.jpg

Armoured Company: https://i.imgur.com/kjnwe8T.jpg

I still need to sort out the third infantry platoon and the transport for the Infantry Company and Veterans... but I'm almost there ... well, apart from paint .

I've started conversion work on the heavy weapon troopers for the third platoon (ten Squats; five gunners and five loaders) but have also been a bit distracted by these guys:

These casts were sent to me by Macrocosm. They are from the ones I sculpted for the kickstarter and I have actually put a bit of paint on them (primed and I have started the black on the Commissar)... I couldn't help myself .

Yep, they are casts of my masters . All of the masters are going to Macrocosm Miniatures so that they can be cast and put up for sale in their shop (at some point) currently, they are being sold through the odd Kickstarter because it's easier to control during the lockdown in the UK.

Now, to add to the masses, here are some WIPs of the next five troops :

I've got quite far on the next two but have stalled a bit... so I've been adding a bit of covering to three more armatures, ready for work. That means that once the two special weapon troopers are finished, I'll be sculpting another Sgt another lasgunner and the first officer; a lieutenant.

I think the Sgt will be getting an axe and a bolt pistol, the lasgunner will be standing with his lasgun at 'high port arms' and the officer will have a holstered pistol, sheathed sword and will be 'directing' with his hands.

Still lots of work to go before any of that happens though !

It's almost at the point where I can start some proper character models... like officers and advisors... maybe even a psyker .

The only things I need to do before that, are sort out the special weapons and sculpt another two lasgunners .

The Squats of Inso's Reach @ 2020/07/06 09:10:52

Post by: Inso

The first of the special weapons is done... just three more to go now...

Chem-Burnner - A flamer weapon that uses chemical reaction of mixed elements, rather than needing a pilot light to ignite fuel. Two chemicals are loaded into separate tanks and pumped forward into a combining nozzle which ejects the mixture before it reacts and bursts into streams of liquid flame. The weapon tends to be quite long in order to reduce the risk of burning the operator. The weapon counts as a standard flamer in all respects.

It's been a while but seeing as this isn't just me advertising miniatures and is all about me building an army, I have started to put a bit of paint down on some of the casts. This is mostly because I am not into sculpting at the moment but also because the whole point of this project is to build my army... so I have started to paint a few miniatures :

In a bid to add a bit of variety amongst the same miniatures, the ones at the back have tanned skin, the ones in the middle will have black skin and the ones at the front will have white skin . I am not painting these in squads... just as batches of miniatures that will be arranged into squads later so all of the squads will get a good mix of miniatures, skin colours and the odd conversion here and there... but obviously, that's a bit of a way off yet.

Still... the journey continues ... more to come.

The painting is on hold... as is most of my sculpting :( . I've just not been in the mood for any of my hobby lately and it has been a real struggle to get anything done.

As a result, I went back to some of my WIPs and ripped their arms and heads off because I just wasn't happy with them. I then repaired/replaced the arms and have added a head to one of them... so I have made a little bit of progress . Here's the Sgt that I have finished:

The second Sgt is getting his face at some point over the weekend (hopefully) but I am on painkillers (due to chronic pain) so it may or may not happen... If I finish the second one, I'll post pix .

This thread is incredible-Very inspiring I just got the Meng Toon Chuchill for my current project (a proxy guard force). Very nice kit, although I'm a bit worried about the paint flaking off the tracks (which are rubber). I probably should have left them un-primed and then drybrushed them with silver paint, but hopefully they'll be okay. Anyway-keep up the great work. Your squat sculpts are really cool (hopefully GW will see this thread and get inspired ).

@SpaceGoblin1980 - Yeah, the tracks are a bit of a problem. All I did was give then a grey dry-brush and I reckon that'll probably fall off as well.

Really enjoying seeing these sculpts, especially if they continue to being made available via Macrocosm. Have the Commissar painted and a Sergeant and now working on the rest of the command squad. So much fun to paint, thank you.

Thank you everyone . I appreciate it .

The bro-fist is a cool idea... it may happen ...

Me and Chris (at Macrocosm) have a great arrangement... I sculpt things, he sells them... so I hope this will continue for at least another 15 or so miniatures .

Once the two officers are finished, there are plans for a few more Comms troopers, a bunch of lasgunners and a separate autocannon for the heavy weapon trooper.

After that, there are five close combat troopers and an Engineseer planned... so lots to keep things interesting.

I plan to have 7 different lasgunners, 6 of them will get two additional heads... so all together, there should be 19 lasgunners. I think that will be plenty of variety for an army .

Loving the progress pics. I just chipped in for the full pledge on the current campaign, looks like you've already got enough new greens for another KS! Need to figure out my add-ons to build out full squads, but maybe I should hold off if there's more variety coming. These are going to drop right in to my ongoing RT Guard/Squat project.

I don't run any of the sales/Kickstarter stuff so I have no idea what will be in any kickstarters or when they will happen. I have a general idea because of what I send to Chris but on the whole, I get little surprises too .

It'll be quite a while before there are lots more lasgunners/comms... a good few months so if you feel the urge... don't let that stop you !

I look forward to seeing how you paint/convert them .

Yep, that's what I have been trying to do .

All the Sgt's and Officers are unique but there are Lasgunners that have one unique sculpt and then two additional head-swaps (on casts of the original) for variety. That way, I can get through the sculpting quicker and not need to sculpt so many bodies.

I have seven original Lasgunners with a total of 19 variations... so that should be plenty for any army .

The Squats are better at engineering than guard so they can achieve the same results with smaller kit. Also, I based this comms-kit, more on modern infantry comms than WH40k stuff... and a massive pack doesn't tend to work well on the modern battlefield.

The good thing is that the headset is on there so the pack could always be snipped off and replaced with a giant on if anyone wants to take the time to convert them .

I backed the campaign earlier this afternoon. Not so long ago I was lamenting the failure of GW to reissue any of the old squat or (as far as I know) Beastmen units- and then along came all your marvelous sculpts and I have just about compiled the scene from the picture on the cover of the old GW plastic Squats box- complete with (old school) Rhino and Commissar.

Great pieces and the new leadership team, medics and heavy weapons (with old school looking shoulder fired heavy weapons!) will round out the company very nicely.

(The figures are good enough and motivated me enough to want to paint that they jumpred the queue awaiting attention! )

Post by: Inso

@ Meer_Cat - Cheers ... I am really glad that they have got under your skin . When I sculpted the range, the "old-school" look of the original Squats was very much in my mind. I just wanted them to be more uniform and also a bit different (just a tiny bit different) so that's why they got berets .

As an aside, the Beastmen were converted from my sculpts by... ANOTHER SCULPTOR! so the heads and legs are nothing to do with me (and I wasn't told about it... ).

They look good though (although, I would have done them differently but ho-hum, eh?...).

Astra Militarum don't have power armour or bikes... so your anticipation won't be rewarded. Sorry.

That said... I am hoping (at some point) to create exo armour but it won't be egg shaped. It'll be more 'functional' looking... but it is not planned for the near future. I have a couple of advisors and a small squad of close combat troopers (as a commission for the range, rather than something I want for my army).... then I want to make some beastmen .

Bikes are a bit too much of a stretch for me... they aren't just figures, they're more mechanical and not particularly easy to sculpt/create so I'd have to really be at a loss for something to do, to even think about that sort of thing :( .

As I have said before, I am making an army for me... the range is secondary.

I appreciate you responding back to a statement made in jest- and completely understand your reasoning. I kitbash and make things up from 'found bits', but don't sculpt. I've worked greenstuff a bit for very simple things- packs and tarps mostly- so can't imagine the skill to do figures. No worries all around.

I was never a big fan of the Killer Easter Eggs, for that matter. Liked the Hearth Guard only in that it was the only way to get a reasonable amount of movement out of a squat army. Otherwise, you equipped with missle launchers back when they had 72 inches of range, sat tight and blew things up until the enemy came to you.

Good luck assembling your army- I'll continue to support, as what you need for yours I reckon I'll need for mine.

Rock on!

With the eventual release of the new Squats from GW, the motivation to create/sell/buy "Old School" sculpts may reduce... I am hoping that it isn't the case...

The new "League of Votann" miniature, if it is what the range will be styled after, is quite a departure from the old miniatures...

I will continue to support Old School Squats. I'm not a terribly big fan of everything that GW has 'modernized'.

Cheers .

I am in a bit of a "sculpting free mood" at the moment so I've sort of run out of mojo for the time being... so I dug out the army and have been painting the base coat on all of the faces that need it. I use three different skin tones so I needed to get the whole army together so that I could spread the different skin tones fairly. Now I've done that, I can just paint the army, unit by unit without having to make sure the faces are the right colour.

It had been a while since the army has seen ANY paint...

I also decided to convert one of my spares into an Ordnance Officer... I am basing his general demeanour on an angry man ... I think I'll be calling him Angry Dave... just because Daves don't tend to be as angry as other people .

Post by: Inso

The close combat squad has stalled... as has most of the hobby... but I suddenly had an idea about an Ordnance Officer as an advisor. A little conversion later and I had exactly what I wanted :

There is a myth about archers showing two fingers to prove they had them... I thought that pushing a button only takes one finger so that's what I went for. It's a one off (not going for casting), mostly because it's a bit offensive... but it is, what it is .

Solid HQ section, always nice to see you getting paint in Also appreciate the range of skin and hair tones in your dwarfs, which can be particularly monotone as a sci-fantasy trope.

Cheers .

I chose to use different skin tones for a few reasons... 1)I had duplicates of the same sculpt so painting different skin tones would make them appear different 2) so many armies have uniform skin tones that they look odd and 3) I like the idea of having a happy bunch of troops from a variety of backgrounds . I think it certainly makes a big impact, with all the different skin tones .

I will hope along with you... the new sculpts seem bland and bizarrely proportioned. I'm sure some flavor will come with the fluff, but the new hardware has yet to inspire me. Yours, on the other hand, continue to impress! I love the Ordinance Officer. I converted an Empire Gun Crew for a Fantasy army that had the gunners giving a kilted moon to the enemy in the manner of the scene from Braveheart.

Love the command teams!

I've got a fair amount of your pieces now and plan to purchase more through the website. Having seen the excellent results of blending different skin tones throughout an otherwise homogenous unit I'm going to try to do the same- love the look, it just never occurred to me to try that before (using different hair colors was tres adventurous already for me!

These are seriously nice pieces and much better than anything else passing current. Bring back the 80's!

@ Captain Brown - Cheers . Once I have my army painted, I will be making a nice display board for them... obviously in the far, far future (especially at the rate I paint ).

@ Meer_Cat - Thank you . I'm glad that you like them enough to get some of your own.

I usually try to mix skin tones; especially when I am using multiples of the same miniature. Changing hair colour works quite well but changing the face colour really adds that extra bit of variety.

Your sculpting talent is properly incredible. Although the new Votanni are certainly different, I think they would fit alongside each other well with a unifying army scheme. Your superb older style Squats would fit in well as a group of sappers and scouts.

Great sculpting as always.

I love the OG Squat aesthetic and find the new one bland and tame somehow. I really don't get the 'astronaut' kind of thing the new guys have going.

I think that GW have taken the "asteroid Miner" part of the Squat background and ramped it up into the main theme... it's OK... it's not padded flak jackets and long beards but at least they have chosen a specific direction, rather than a shotgun approach .

I'm happy ticking along with my old-school Squats for now and maybe, once I've seen more of the range, I might get into the Votann... but I'm keeping my cards close to my chest... for now .

A small update... Thor, the Engineseer and the two advisors have now been sent off for casting. I should have sculpted a pair of Servitors to go with the Engineseer but I have been distracted with a couple of other projects...

First, a friend of mine asked me to sculpt him a diver that he could wear as a pendent. He provided me reference to use and this is what I came up with:

Second, a conversion was needed for a game board at Salute 2023... so I dug out a Hasslefree Miniatures dolly and converted it into this well known, sci-fi heroine:

I am now working on a caricature of a political figure and a pair of laughing Buddhas... which are far from finished. Hopefully, I'll get back to the Seritors soon but I think I just need a bit of time away to act as a palette cleanser .

Things are ticking along... I now have another proxy Chimera for my converted Squat army:

And the last batch of miniatures have been cast in resin and will be delivered once the diver has also been cast in metal :

I just need to finish off some servitors now...

I was going to sculpt the psykers as Beastman Shaman types, instead of Dwarfs but I just had this idea that the Dwarf psykers could channel their ancestor's energies by getting drunk... and the Beer Seer and Wine Witch were born .

Cheers ... and the diver isn't a "skull underneath", it was made for a friend who used to be a Navy diver and wanted a "fantasy" diver to wear around his neck, on a chain... So I sculpted this for him (from pictures he gave me) and got a few cast in metal so he could have one as a pendant. As a result, he has one on a chain now and I'm in the process of cleaning a few more up so that he can give them to his family members .

However, the final unit of second platoon is now finished; the heavy weapon squad:

Now on to the third and final platoon ...

It is sad when you do not even get a "Hey guys we are closing down" comment. Anyway of topic I know.

Here's a pic of the completed units with command/sniper elements at the top and two platoons of troops:

I have the third platoon to paint (currently WIP), 4 Servitors to sculpt/paint and an Astropath to sculpt/paint and the army will be complete ...

... Roll on 2024 so I can finally get this project finished (before I start the next one ).

Great army shot of your custom made Squats that fit in with the Second Edition vibe.

This army is purely infantry for display... however, I have plans to build some vehicles at a later date but I am still in the process of deciding which design subject to use... I'm leaning towards wheeled vehicles but it is not set in stone yet .

Yep . There was always going to be a third platoon (A full company of a command section and three platoons).

I also need four servitors and two astropaths to finish units that have been started... but I need to sculpt those first . Then... the army will be finished.

There will be other projects but I always wanted this one to be around the 100 trooper mark and I think I'm about 120 (ish) so I am at the limit. I want to build a nice display for this army and put it on show in the house... so I can't have it any bigger because we just don't have the space.

Just for information, the latest Kickstarter has been started; this time for the Engineseer, Thor, Air Advisor and Artillery Advisor (plus a big robot that I didn't sculpt):

I was hoping those figures would come. Just wish we'd see the other vox operators (standing).

I'll talk to Chris and see what's happening with them .

+++EDIT+++

Chris didn't know which ones they were so I have sent him pix to get things moving again ...to his knowledge, he hasn't cast them yet so he's going to do some digging on Monday (15th Jan) to see if he can find them and look at casting them up . If all is well, I'll ask if they can go straight in the shop, rather than you having to wait until a new Kickstarter .

Something new for the "OLD" army, the GW plastics at the front of this blog ...

Old soldiers never die... just like army projects . These are going to be Bullgryns (5 with maul/brute shield, 1 with grenadier gauntlet and slab shield). They have been assembled, ready for a bit of sculpting... then I'll be adding armour, shields and a bit of extra equipment before they are ready for painting .

Yes... I should be doing other things but I just fancied a bit of a change .

Here's a reminder of what some of the OLD boys look like :

Where are the Ogryns from Inso?

Oh and there is nothing wrong with the old boys. I would give them a home in my Army.

The Ogryns are these ones:

https://elementgames.co.uk/games-workshop/warhammer-40k/necromunda/gangs/jotunn-h-grade-servitor-ogryns

I have used some bits and bobs from the WH40k Bullgryn box and a pair of legs from the Ambot box (you get two pairs of spare legs in each box!):

https://elementgames.co.uk/games-workshop/warhammer-40k/necromunda/gangs/necromunda-ambot-automata

I love the old boys too... once I've finished the "new army", I'll be going straight back to the Old boys ... another 200+ miniatures to paint (with a little bit of sculpting in between... plus nine Chimeras to scratchbuild )!

Another update on the Comms troopers. Unfortunately, the resin caster has been taken sick so I have found some of my resin copies and will be sending them to Chris for metal casting. They'll be posted tomorrow so it shouldn't be too long before they turn up in the shop (I'll steer him towards the shop, rather than the kickstarter route).

I've been struggling with sculpting for a while but seem to be getting back on track again. I recently finished this group for a gaming club:

... and that has spurred me on to sculpt other bits and bobs so there should be more "Squat" updates quite soon .

I'm not sure whether you are familiar with the "Frothers Unite UK" forum but it was a very special place where some very "inventive" gaming content/discussion happened. The forum isn't around in a useable fashion any more and has moved to Facebook but they still have club activities... one of which is putting together a bunch of gaming tables for Salute at Excel, London, every year. This year it's about children's shows but with a twist... hence a bunch of Tellytubbies were needed. Last year it was a game where tractors were towing away Russian tanks... but the tractors were driven by celebrities. I provided a Paddington and Leeloo for two of the drivers... and in one of their other games they needed a politician in the form of Gollum so I did that as well . The games are "turn up an play" games and generally do very well .

On to other news... Chris now has resin copies of the comms troopers and will hopefully be getting them cast up very soon .

Always cool to see retro style Squats, scratches an old magazine itch for me.

Those Ogryns are going to be awesome!

Teletubbies... whaaat? lol

Shame about Warseer closing down, albeit I have not visited Warseer since it gave my Computer a Rootkit [via an ad] some... 12 years ago or more? Literal window between my antivirus being run out and looking at getting a different one. I visited Warseer EVERYDAY. I'm going to go look for it now.

My favorite forums of yesteryear... ah, for another thread perhaps?

@ RedSarge - I've lost a few forums over the years... but I guess it's a sign of the times and mostly Facebook. It's a shame though :( .

@ Colonel Jacka - Chris is casting some masters this week so the comms troopers should be available VERY soon .

It's been a while... a bit of sculpting for other people has interrupted things... but here's a WIP for an Astropath:

All that needs to be finished is his staff/stave. Once this one is cast up, it will enable all of the advisors to join the army (advisors are now taken as a unit of Artillery/Airforce/Astropath models instead of being taken separately).

Then it's four servitors and that's it for the army ...

Cheers . This was a sculpt that changed theme during the process... he was originally going to be a clean-cut ancestor type... instead, he went a bit feral .
