McDougall Designs received our stock order of Wargames Atlantic landskneckt ogres this past week.

In between filling orders and working on other business tasks, I've also completed a unit of the ogre plastics. Base is 120mmx80mm.

In review: this is an excellent set, full of detail and charm. They take washes and dry brushing well. As they are hard plastic they are ripe for conversions.

While I haven't used any of the sci-fi components the kit includes, I've mused on an army of gun toting ogres with their liberty painted in swiss guard colors.

I'm currently still not taking orders for 3D printed items. I'm finishing up the last few printed orders I have. I'm also looking at revamping how I take 3D printed orders so that I don't get overwhelmed again.

During my usual afternoon hobby break today I decided it would be fun to test a conversion between the Mantic Games rift forged orcs (available via special order from Mcdougall Designs*) and the new Wargames Atlantic Harvesters (which are in stock and available now) would look like.

The result is a crab-headed humanoid in heavy armor which could be used for a variety of different games.

While the ball join on the rift forged body and the harvester heads are not a match, they roughly fit one another and don't necessarily require any gap filling depending on placement of the head.

To the customer who asked if harvester scythe claws would fit on cannon fodder bodies: while not pictured, I did compare the sprues.

The answer is not naturally. The harvester arm is a ball join and cannon fodder have flat joins. You could shave the ball join flat and make it work, although it would probably look awkward.

You might want to do a hack and slash job and merge cannon fodder arms with the scything claws. I think something like this will be my next conversion.

Makes sense. I really dont like most of Mantic's stuff. I did like their restic ogres.I had gotten some in a kickstarter. Unfortunately that seems to be a symptom of Mantic's prices rising to be in line with other competition in the market, while their models still have the same quality level.

I don't want to rag on Mantic. I love kings of war as a system, and think gamers should give the game itself a shot.

I'm surprised I only recieved 2 orders when the relatively new ambush sets hit pre-order, considering thier savings level, especially through my shop.

The new marauders and the new ogres are the two kits I’m most interested in. Those will have to wait until the next time I can place an order, which sadly I don’t know when that will be.

I’m also interested in Armada, but the prices for new sets are like 25% higher than the prices on the original releases. That’s enough to give me pause.

On one hand, I see the increase you are talking about and it does suck.

On the other hand, it makes my current 25% off sale (empires tomorrow at noon) the cheapest you will get them stateside.

It’s something I would be interested in. I still need to finish getting the Salamander fleet, too. Unfortunately I’ve had to put off a lot of what I would like to get. Got my ogre girls today. Will see how they bash with WA Landsknecht ogre bits. Planning on a 3 girl musket unit, 2 cat-beast riders and an officer/character. So far size-wise they look pretty comparable. Heads look smaller.

Also got a sprue of Skellies, a sprue of Spiders and a sprue Space Nam.

Ok, here are some pics. Basically GW, Mantic and WA ogre bits. I will say... the Mantic ogres... The bodies look good. The heads are small though and dont look good next to GW or WA because they are small. Overall, not a huge fan of the mantic ogres... which seems to be how I have felt about almost all their sets. Good... ish... but there are better options.

I made 2 cat riders. GW catbeast, GW rider with torso cut off, Mantic upper torso and head, WA arms and pouches.

With the bottom half of the Mantic body I used the top half of the GW beast rider with some GW arms (with WA weapon hands) and a GW head. There are 2 of these.

Then 1 pretty much straight mantic ogre with a WA sword hand.

I have 1 more sprue (3 ogresses) of the mantic which will probably be straight mantic hand gunner ogres...

And a WIP of the whole army so far.

Geeze, some stuff I've been looking at for years there. Cheap enough I may have to pull the trigger.

The EM4 science fiction plastics are former Grenadier (maybe?) plastics from the 90s. Around 25mm and fairly basic.

EM4 has metal arms that help with them but honestly at this point in life I would look to any of the other plastic makers.

They were barely OK when I did an IG army of them in the early 2000s.

The mecha might still be OK.

Nice! I was always curious about those EM4 sci fi minis but I couldn't be bothered to order them directly from the manufacturer. At these prices, they're easily add-ons next time I order more WGA sprues.

Their Space Lords line has great sci-fi beast men (the Phagons,) not-Mechanics types, and not-Rogue Trader civilians, and their Horror line has some classic Lovecraft monster sculpts. (Their Proto-Shoggoths, Byakhees, and Servitors of the Outer Gods are particularly good.) For the curious, EM4's metal miniatures run small, more in the realm of 25mm pushing 28mm than 28mm pushing 32mm.

If you can special order their metal minis, you'd be doing US customers a real service. EM4's pricing on their metal miniatures is, like their plastics, very reasonable, but their international shipping charges aren't as inviting.

I can order everything but items in "The Vault". So yes that includes the metal ranges. I was going to put them up, starting with the ludus gladiatorius minis, for special order.

And to clarify, they would be able to be special ordered for this upcoming special order deadline on the 5th july.

I can personally vouch for the Ludus Gladitorius minis from EM4. Great sculpts and they're a little closer to 28 Heroic scale.

Which Warlord and Victrix minis do you have? The Warlord Romans I have (from maybe 15 years ago) are teeny, and the Victrix minis, mostly Carthaginians and their allies, are all the size of WGA minis, but with slightly more heroic scale heads.

Warlord Macedonians and Victrix Classical Greek archers and slingers. The Victrix are just a little shorter than the Warlord minis, but are skinny and frail looking in comparison. Don't know when the minis were sculpted, but I bought them in 2016-7.

Apparently Warlord like the chunky look with their historicals. I understand it’s due to the early prominence of Wargames Foundry, but it’s a look I dislike.

I wrote up my usual blog post for august preorders from mantic games.

A lot of potential for various sci fi gaming here: hard plastic tanks, half-tracks with mortars, command and control fliers, and several 2 player starter sets.

If you are looking to build up an armored company for 40k or some other sci fi game, that archon tank deal is a killer savings.

The other vehicles are all generally solid and have some good utility in terms of parts. The added bits like the command array on the enforcer flier look nice too.

There's also the two player sets. Of these, I think I prefer the vyr-myn vs forgefathers personally. lots of bodies, lots of conversion potential. The Vyrm myn with head swaps could make good mutant cultists and the tunneler tank is useful for a variety of gaming and terrain projects.

I would love to get both for my damned which i am thinking will have Bulldog heads and be loyalists... but that said my money is currently tied up on the Damned (flex pay) as well as possibly adding more with the pledge manager opening soon... but i may look into the vehicles with you later on...

the air transports in that last set. Do they both come with all the same parts? The picture shows one without the transport/cargo part so was just wondering.$80 for either of those sets is a great deal.

I would imagine they'd have all the same parts, as the Hornet kit comes with the removable transport section as standard. The photo is most likely to show how you can alternately assemble the kit.

When I use mine in my comic, I swap out the landing skids or remove the transport section as needed for the appropriate scene.

I believe KidCuthulu has the right of it, and its just to show alternate assembly. From what I recall of building the single hornet I've done, the cargo/troop compartment was an separate piece that you didn't necessarily need to put on.

My stock order at eM4 Miniatures was placed on July 10th, as is usual with my stock requests for most manufacturers.

On July 13th I received an email stating they were casting parts of my order.

My contact at the company stated it would be shipped shortly when I followed up with them about said email.

I expected a roughly 2 week window on receipt of shipment, since this would be arriving from the UK.

It is now July 26th, my order has not yet arrived, and an attempt to reach out to EM4 has been met with an email stating they are out of office until August 10th.

My sales rep states there is a QR code on the outer box for the wolverines.

I also have the PDF saved now if any of my customers ever need it. I will attempt to make a point to send it to anyone who orders them.

Weekly update 10/6/23

Firstly, the next special order date is October 13th. If you were looking to get any special orders or preorders placed, please do so before or on the 13th.

This includes Twilight kin preorders from Mantic. Mantic has recently updated the Mantic Companion with the twilight kin rules, so if you needed to plan your preorders you can go onto the companion and pay around with list building.

I posted an article earlier in the week discussing the open ended ability of the twilight kin to be expanded upon, since they have access to bound nightstalkers units.

A Warlord games order will be going in on the 13th alongside a Perry miniatures and oathmark/frostgrave order, so if you want anything from these ranges, special ordering would be your best bet right now.

I've brought in a selection of Mantic's Terrain crate items, which you can see below. These should be available on the website already but if you don't find them please let me know. Sometimes Shopify can hide things unexpectedly. The upcoming new releases (mushroom trees, etc) for November will be up for preorder ASAP. According to Mantic, that will probably be next week.



I've also taken some time this week to work on some conversions of Mantic Ogres into orc heavy infantry, in the spirit of Orctober. I've detailed the conversions in a blog post, however I have also recently finished painting them. Hopefully you are inspired to conversions through this continuing series.

Just an update as recent news :

I have continued expanding the warlord games listings with more from their catalog as special order items for ease of setting up your order.

I've also created two collections, black powder warfare and bolt action. The black powder section will be expanded with the rest of the range available to me over time.

Special orders for warlord product already placed for this month should be arriving in the next few days. Although I am not 100% certain I've been told by my sales rep that they are on the way.

My Mantic stock for the Twilight in launch release will be arriving tomorrow and I will get pre-orders shipped out and the pre-order section updated so that the Twilight can are put on special order status. Screw reviews will be up shortly afterwards.

Scouts out has come out with an expansion book, which I have limited stock of. If you like world War I table gaming then this is an exceptional expansion which I will be doing a review on soon.

War Games Atlantic has been restocked for the most part. Conquistadors, partisans, and a few other kids are still out of stock at the warehouse and they are working hard to get them restocked. Once I have notification that my back order shipment is on the way I will of course let everyone know.

However this does mean things like space Nam, Les Grognard, bulldogs and individual frames thereof are back to being available.

This was going to be a happy weekly update with brand new pre-orders from mantic, and a whole bunch of more items added from the warlord bolt action range. Among other things.

Then I had a technical issue when importing a CSV file.

Now I have a technical support nightmare and I'm actively searching for a technically minded person who has worked with the Shopify back end before.

Not much to report this week, however there are a few points of note:

1. Fireforge will be coming back into the store in a full fashion, however fireforge products will have the own order information page with key points. I'm essentially going to have to run it slightly differently than how I do normal special orders due to freight costs. More information will be forthcoming when I receive final trade documents from fireforge directly.

2. The individual à la carte sprue items section has received a bevy of returning items with current stock limits in place. The war games Atlantic spruce will be returning to properly managed stock levels after a scheduled inventory this weekend.

In addition to the new logo, information is up for March special orders. The special order date is the 6th.

Mantic does not have new releases (apparently until april.) They also changed their trade shipping process (to a net negative, in terms of shipping time unfortunately.)

Speaking of, my recent resupply with world War I Russian infantry and imperial conquests Afghan infantry from Wargames Atlantic finally arrived.

Warlord games, frostgrave, oathmark, etc came in today. Finally. I did not expect a large delay like this from my distributor.

Mantic's Halo game is up on the pre-order section, as well as its own dedicated collection under mantic.

Orders of the main game from my webstore do not get the free master chief model given to those who order on mantic's webstore, but you do get 20% off.
