I've been meaning to scratch build a warhound for quite a while now and a titan building comp on another site gave me the perfect excuse. I wanted on doing something unique and decided on building my warhound based on it's original epic model design. So far I've finished building the base structure of the legs.

And now some pics:

You have great attention to detail and this looks very promising What exactly is the black stuff though? Some sort of plasticard?

Yeah, it's .060" black styrene (plasticard). I bought a boatload on eBay a couple of years ago and have been using it ever since.

I haven't figured out how I'm going to handle the carapace yet, but I'm sure I'll think of something.

We'll see. I'm notorious for starting new projects before I finish old ones, hopefully the looming deadline of the contest will keep me focused. The fact that I work at a meticulously slow rate doesn't help.

I've been detailing out the legs and should have them mostly done later tonight, pics will follow.

Took me a bit longer to get here than I expected. I didn't like how upper legs were coming out and had to redo them. I ended up shortening them by about a half inch and am much happier with their proportions now.

Arstahd,
I know what you can use for the Carapace. It would be fast, the perfect shape, and not too expensive. Try a canopy window from a radio controled airplane. You can get them at any major hobby store. If you can't find one let me know, there is one close to me and I can pick one up and mail it to you.

That's not a bad idea there cuda, I'll keep it in mind. Thanks for the offer too.

I haven't gone out to look for something yet though I'm hoping to finding a hard plastic football of some sort. I'm working on the lower torso ATM so it's not a pressing issue yet.

Been busy working on the carapace. I decided on building it entirely from scratch and began bending and glueing plasticard. After many trials and tribulations I was able to get what I was aiming for and am quite happy with the results.

It looks AWESOME. That is going to be one cool Warhound when it's done. Oh, how does the yankee candle smell? I love those things.

I loved this project the moment I saw the feet. The carapace is just right out of this world. I am VERY excited to see the rest!

Did the plasticard bend evenly just through pressure or did you need to add a bit of heat? Thats awesome usage of it though i would have sworn you got lucky with some random item that fit the bill.

The basic shape was made of plasticard strips, straight on one edge, curved on the other. I first loosened them up by repeatedly bending them. Then I bent one piece and glued another piece inside the first, leaving a lip on the edges to facilitate the connection of additional sections. I used filament packing tape (which has no give, great for holding stuff together while glue sets) to hold the bend. Additional sections were added one at a time until I got a shape that roughly resembled what I had wanted out of the double layered plasticard. I used heat to tweek the shape here and there and then ground down the joints to make a smooth contour. At this point I started making the cutouts and further refined the shape. I found that it was a bit short on the sides and added some extentions. I then cut it to fit the base I had made, scrapped my original base design, found it was too short for my new design, added new extentions, etc... During the smoothing process I occasionally would come across gaps between the layers at the seams. These I filled with a patch compound that I made using superglue and plasticard dust (this works remarkably well). Some final sanding and heat shaping and I was done.

Next time that I get my camera out I'll take a pic of the inside where the various pieces are clearly visible.
