So I have figured out where GW is getting their sales model from.

I bought a Dell laptop last year and got an almost free printer with it. I thought that it was a great deal because my old printer was getting a bit behind the times.
This week I had a flashing message on my screen from Dell telling me that my printer ran out of ink and the only place I could get it was online through them. So naturally I went to an ink refill store that all all my classmates and professors use. They had a good price so I traded in my cartridges and went home happy. That was until I found out that my new cartridges still read as empty and my computer would no longer send files out to the printer.
After a search on the net for solutions I learned that Dell had scammed me into purchasing a Lexmark (under their name) and that they had willfully made the cartridges unable to be refilled. They set them to lock down when refilled. What-the-freakin crap am I supposed to do when every company I buy something form is trying to bend me over. I had to get that out of my system.

So while we complain about the absurdarchy over at GW, let us think about all the companies who are trying to "control their profit"

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

If the cartridges that were full read were empty on purchase then they reneged on their deal.

Sell you a computer and a printer, if the printer should have had catridges preinstalled the deal is broken. Take it back.

You should never buy from Dell anyway, or for that matter anyone other retail computer. Idealy you should self build yourself. If you cannot manage that ask for help from people at your college, I can all but guarantee you will find people who will source parts and assist the build, most tech students worth their words self build.

The only time you should get a retail computer is if you buy ex-display. It has the twin advantages that the computer is burned in and works and is unusally heavily discounted into the bargain. When I bought an ex-display I got such a huge discount, plus enough negotiated software and accessory throw-ins to equal the price I paid for the computer. I somehow forgot to mention that ex-display is a plus point.

Most printer manufacturers only supply cartridges with a small amout of ink/toner in it so that you have to get refills very quickly. If you lived over here in Europe you'd have a better chance of getting a fairer deal on the refills as EU rules don't allow them to stop you using refills.

It really isn't. Building your own computer really is the way to go. It ensures you that you get exactly what you want and it also ensures you that there isn't a bunch of crap attached to it that you don't want. The final bonus point is that 95% of the time, its cheaper than a pre built. I, personaly, find pre-builts to be an abomination and an affront to all that is 1337. But that's just me. Regardless, doing it yourself really pays off here and its significantly less complicted than building a car. You need a case, a mother board, ram, hard drive(s), cd/dvd drive(s), a graphics card, and maybe another card or two (sound perhaps if you don't want the use the onboard one). Its not a tremendous amount of work.

Bankers (not tellers lets not be insulting please) are not tech savvy. If they want a new system they would buy it, not try to build it. You can't show off a home made computer to your other Bankers.

I mean the time it takes to build a computer I could have used to make rich people even more rich. come on you have to have priorities

The time it takes to buy one is just about the time it takes to build one. So I will have to agree that Bankers are not tech savvy.

Same for my suits. I wouldn't make my suits, my car, my TV. I don't know anyone who makes their own computers at this point. Even the techie guys I know buy them now-they are too busy to jack with that sort of thing.

I know you play at your time being soooooo important to making others money that you can't be bothered to build a PC, but you are on a Warhammer forum which means you at least do some part of the hobby. Forgoing even that you have time to post on a hobby forum. No one said make it during working hours at work. You don't have the tech savvy to build one that is fine and perfectly reasonable, but I don't believe for a second that you wouldn't have the time to do it when you have the time for Warhammer.

Heh, not to fan to flames of controversy, but I have a friend who built his own computer and built a computer for his girlfriend, and both have had troubles and had to spend time and money diagnosing hardware and/or software problems and reinstalling windows. I bought a Dell XPS 3.5 years ago and have had zero troubles with it. I *know* that if I tried to build myself a computer, I would break components, buy the wrong thing, and generally make a mess of things.

Some people really don't want to take the time to build stuff. Yes, I have the time to be on this forum. I enjoy being on this forum. I wouldn't enjoy trying to research and build a computer. It's not that I don't recognize the value in doing so, or realize you may end up with a better product that way, but I'd rather read a modelling thread and go putter with stuff on my workbench.

And lets face it. Some people like tinkering with computers, some don't.

It seems that people who are knowledgeable about computers assume that something that is easy for them must be easy for everyone else. I built my old computer, and I wouldn't do it again. Of course, in fairness, I had some particular problems with mine that were simply bad luck. It turned out that the case I purchased, which had USB and firewire jacks, had something wrong with it ( this has never been completely explained to me). When I plugged in the firewire to the board, it apparently screwed up the board. At least they replaced my equipment.

My next machine I got from Falcon Northwest, and I've been very pleased with it. I really don't think I could have come off much cheaper building it myself, unless I happened to get a deal on the parts.

Maybe he wants to spend time painting and playing warhammer rather than screwing around with a computer. I also use the old paying for MMORPG services argument. I imagine as a working professional he doesn't have unlimited time, and for all I know he's well compensated for his work...it just depends on what you want to spend time on versus what you want to spend money on. Ultimately you can't get more time, so I'd lean toward the latter.

A bizarre array of focusing mirrors and lenses turning my phrases into even more accurate clones of

Yeah, I don't get what's so cool about building your own comp. I have a friend who will gladly help me out on it for some pizza and dew, but it's not that much cheaper than buying it from a place that lets you customize your computer, like Dell. Even with all the rebates, the price difference was maybe ~$100 when I had my computer built.

Now, if you already have a monitor and speakers, that's when it's cheaper to buy 'em. But, from experience, you'd probably want a new monitor anyway and cheapers area always an optional thing.

I think the only reason some guys like to build their own is so they can customize their case and add all sorts of lights to it. That's your thing, but the only time you'll ever get to show it off is at a LAN party...if you're into those.

Maybe if instead of just quoting me and actually reading what I wrote you might have saved yourself the time and energy of posting something that daft. I never said he should give up his Warhammer time to build a PC, in fact I explicitly stated that if he wasn't comfortable doing so that it was "perfectly reasonable". Sure we joked about bankers and all that before in good fun but in the end not everyone can do it and that is ok. On the other hand this is a time consuming hobby and unless you make your living doing it, it is what you do in your free time and you have to have that free time to do it. You can't say that you are a super busy person who only has time for work because I'm important and all I do is make money all day every day while simultaneously having enough disposable free time to play this game and handle this hobby. Just admitting that you have free time doesn't mean he has to use it to build a computer over Warhammer. It's his free time, but it is still leisure time none-the-less.

Whats the point? The bottom line is it doesnt matter because you can choose not to do something for whatever reason you want, and you don't really have to explain it on the 'net.

I didn't say he had to explain it, I just said I don't believe he doesn't have any leisure time whatsoever, which is also something you are allowed to do "on the 'net". I do believe he doesn't want to spend the time doing it, which as previously stated, is perfect reasonable, and something I can say "on the 'net".

He doesn't need you to defend him on the net, he can do that just fine and already has, which is another thing you can do "on the 'net".

Posting and or watching twogirlsonecup is also another thing you can do "on the 'net".

Reading highly biased biased blogs or the New York Times is another thing you can do "on the 'net".

Gosh, the number of things you can do "on the 'net" is so immense I wonder if just using that as some point of argument is silly. I bet someone could make that argument "on the 'net" to.

Did you actually read what I wrote? Hard to believe you did becuase you made a few leaps there that wouldn't be rational if you took the time to read it.

1. Being on the internet did have nothing to do with building it, it had to do with illustrating that not every second of the day is made up of work work work. Unless your job is reading and posting on hobby forums.

2. I have said several times now that it is perfectly reasonable if you don't have the inclination to do it/have it done.
