The Illuminati have been written out of the fluff, along with the Star Child and the Sensei. The idea is now that humans are doomed without the Emperor, and there's nothing they can do about it. There are still people trying to figure out how to resurrect the Emperor, but they're nothing near as sweeping.

The emperor was made by mass suicide of ancient shaman's, medicine men, etc. that used their psychic energy to combine into one. He guided humanity along subtly until the time he could unify them. If he dies then he can reincarnate himself as the 6th Chaos god (the 5th being Malal), but a chaos god fed by the all the good emotions, love, hope, etc. He would be called the Star Child and reunify all of mankind again. The sensei are the emperor's children and have been hunted down by some inquisitors and mostly killed. There are rumors that there are yet some alive.

Can't type much more cause I'm at work, but that's the basics. Would be damn cool to have an army that is all about killing the emperor to make him a god. Didn't know that fluff about Cypher, too cool.

Ive always believed (even before I really started reading about it) that the Emperor was being kept alive so that the High Lords of Terra would remain in power.  With the kind of power that they control they dont want him to be "reborn" because they fear that they would loose it all.  Im always talking about moving the "story" of 40K forward and I think this would be one great step.

A huge civil war where the emperor's body is destroyed and they realize that he has only been reborn in some random place thus a new crusade would start in search of the reborn savior of man.  Truly that could be the next 20 years of fluff for 40K IF GW ever wanted to "move" it at all.

Games workshop cant progress the story. all the copy rights and stuff are linked to Warhammer 40k, not 50k.

In reference to the sisters that were allowed into the presence of the emporer - they were Goge Vandire's bodyguards, who, after Vandire went nuts and was besieged in administratum complex, were shown into the emporer's chamber by the custodes, to show them the error of Vandire's ways.

I saw on some other forum that the emporer, is, in fact, perfectly fine, but he had a great feast following his victory over Horus, and has become rather clogged.

so for the past 10,000 years, the emporer has been straining to unleash the most mighty of turds; the effort is too much for one man, even the emporer, so a choir of psykers was drafted in to help him with his final great push.

The amount of exersion, by coincedence, creates the astronomican, as all the psykers struggle to help out their liege lord.

Cypher is one of the few who knows of this, and is bringing the Lion Sword, in reality a vial of ex-lax, back to terra.

According to the Horus Heresy Art Books the emperor is using all his power to keep a webway portal closed beneath the golden throne. The books cite that after Magnus' psychic message, the fabric of the webway near terra was torn open and demons threated to flood into the imperial palce. Keeping the portal closed and the demons at bay started to steadily take more and more of the emperor's power. This is why Malcador the Sigilite had to sit in the throne when the Emperor went to face Horus.

So, from that it would seem that the reason the Emperor's been limited in his psychic interactions would be because of the fact he has to dedicate most of his psychic power to keeping the portal closed. That being said, the emperor's still in pretty bad shape and is dependent on the life supporting technologies of the golden thron to stay alive.
