At first I thought they were opening (or re-opening) one of the bunker locations, which would have been cool.

But this just sounds like a re-branding of the sort of thing that used to be in White Dwarf anyway, as a new shiny thing?

I'm possibly missing something, but I don't get it either.

The cynic in me thinks this is just a way of trying to keep White Dwarf relevant, as they'll put tons of 'exclusive' stuff in there rather than releasing it online for free like any normal company attempting to foster good will and interconnected clubs might try.

I think yoy nailed it. However I don't think it'll be much of a draw for people.

It will probably lead to serious bunker mentality

It's a pretty standard marketing scheme, have clubs send in material, but filter it through your magazine so they don't do stuff like you don't like, like using and promoting alternative miniatures, paints, discounted suppliers, game systems etc., are too critical of the company and more. Thus you can 'positive wash' how your community engagement is seen, and also increase the value of printed WD. If it works out, anyway.

It also means they can ensure a general standard is met as well. Both in terms of what is done and in how its presented

I've seen plenty of people submit utterly awful photos of well painted models on social sites.

And bragging rights to be a part of the biggest Warhammer club in the world.

Some of my fondest memories of White Dwarf come from the period when people outside the Studio were allowed to contribute to the magazine, so this feels like a step in the right direction to me.

I do think Magazines are having a bit of a resurgence in popularity. Not sure why, but I do think that the magazine rack is certainly much more diverse and full than it was perhaps 10 years ago or so. Don't hold me to that date, but certainly there was a dip phase and now there's a bit of a comeback. It could even be that whilst the internet is super popular its also super messy and at times finding neat articles and such can be a chore; not to mention how ads can be littered everywhere. Another difference might be that many people are now surfing on a phone not a dedicated PC and that with that its much easier to read Facebook, Insta and other such social media sites; but articles, big pictures and such are much harder to read on tiny phone screens.

So perhaps for the average person who now surfs and does most of their internet activity on their phone; a magazine now provides a better resource for articles and such.

White Dwarf has been available at Barnes & Noble for nearly two decades and at Walmart for the past couple years. They've been "reaching out more to normal people" for a long time.

I think people drift back to magazines because it's getting harder and harder to find specific things (and not just sponsored garbage) on the internet again, and especially re-finding stuff you vaguely remember, but can't really summon the exact search string for (we all know the feeling). A nice magazine that you have in hand is reassuringly non-ephemeral, already curated to be relatively free of crud and advertisements, and you can put it in your attic and access it whenever you want with minimal fuzz.

I am not so sure of that. Magazines are incredibly saturated with advertisements.

White Dwarf isn't bad, but given its unique ownership the whole thing is basically 1 big ad.

I don't regret collecting Dragon over the eons instead of White Dwarf. I regret not collecting them together.

Looks like the Warhammer Bunker is still a thing in the White Dwarf Magazine, together with those "Club Cards".

That "Club of the Month" in every Issue is a joke, in 7 Months they featured and made they own Studio the Club of the Month twice!
