It's back! This is your chance to show the rest of Dakka what you're made of!

The Rules:
1.) Abide by the spirit and guidelines of the Challenge presented.
2.) Take a WIP shot of your model before painting. Send your WIP along with your entry.
3.) Paint your model!
4.) Take another shot of the completed model and send it in to dakkapaintingchallenge@dakkadakka.com with your Dakka Handle as the photo's filename. Also be sure to include your dakka handle in the email, just in case. Oh and be sure it's in before Midnight Central (GMT-6:00) the night of the Deadline!!
5.) The day after the deadline, all the entries will be presented for all of Dakka to see! Along with this will be a poll for the community at large to pick their favorite from the bunch.
6.) Public voting will last for 3 Days. And the Top 5 Entries will go on to be voted upon by our Judging Panel. The Winner will be announced soon after!

Notes:
The model you enter can not be shown on Dakka or any other website, it's specifically for release in the Voting Poll. Models found to be posted prior to the Voting Poll will be disqualified. This does not claim publishing rights. Once the voting is over, feel free to post your model all over the web ^_^!

Please only send one WIP shot with your entry. If you decide to send more than one final painted shot, I will pick the best of them and post it alone. You may create a collage for the model to show detail (back, front, close ups, etc.) and send it as your entry.

Administrator and Moderator entries will be marked with a "Team Dakka" watermark. Admin and Mod participants can't win prizes, but don't let that keep you from voting for them! Defeating one another is more than enough a reward...

Images:
Pics of your model may be either 1000x800 pixels or 800x1000 pixels . The voting is done blind, that way favoritism has nothing to do with who wins. No text, watermarks, or icons on the entry at all. File Names will be changed after I receive them.

The Prize:
The Winner Receives: Dakka Bragging rights, A Dakka front page announcement of your glorious victory, the respect from your fellow modelers, and a copy of the Deathwatch core RPG rulebook personally signed by several of the game's authors from Fantasy Flight Games!

The Challenge

Deathwatch Killteam Kompetition

They send the best to do the worst.

Across the reaches of Imperial Space the Chamber Militant of the Ordo Xenos stand watch to defeat the alien scum that threaten humanity. Small teams of Space Marines, comprised of different chapters, are ready at a moments notice to fight the xenos threat at its heart. Whether its small tactical insertions or leading armies of Imperial Troops to defeat unhuman invaders the members of the Deathwatch are honor bound and sworn to defeat the impure threat of human extinction at the hands of aliens.

The Deadline: February 5th, 2011: Midnight Eastern Time (GMT-5:00)
Note that the challenge deadline has been extended to Feb 5th due to the difficulties of getting it up and running during the holiday season!

Challenge Rules:
The Space Marines of the Deathwatch do not follow the standard Codex Astartes. They use advanced and often experimental or unique weapons. Their wargear is chosen from the most holy armories of the Ordo Xenos. Their tactics are unconventional, even by Astartes standards. They are the best gifted, best qualified, best armed and armored bug hunters in the galaxy! Now its your turn to show us some real Deathwatch Marines. Show us the unique nature of the Deathwatch, what makes them the best individual Space Marines around.

This painting challenge is to model up and paint the coolest looking single Deathwatch Space Marine you can imagine or even an entire Deathwatch kill team if you're really ambitious! Models may be based singly or all together on a diorama base.

For those not steeped in the lore of the Deathwatch, they are basically a secret ad-hoc arm of the Inquisiton that draws its members from a variety of Space Marine chapters, so in any given kill team you will find Marines representing several Space Marine Chapters. The armor of a Kill Team member is painted black with the left arm and shoulder pad left silver including the Deathwatch symbol on the left shoulder pad. The right shoulder pad retains the Marine's original chapter heraldry.

Kill Teams have a wide variety of the most advanced technology available to Marines (similar to 'Sternguard' squads in the current Space Marine codex), but are always equipped to be a mobile threat rather than a static one. They are also known to be led by a Captain and/or Librarian.

If you have ANY questions regarding the competition, please feel free to ask here or email DakkaPaintingChallenge@dakkadakka.com!!

For those of you who might be new to Dakka and haven't seen this before, check out The Dakka Painting Challenge Article.

Typically most Dakka Painting Challenges are only a month long, but we're giving you a little extra time because of the new year and any other holiday festivities that may be taking up your hobby time.

Happy Painting!

A special big thanks to Fantasy Flight Games for providing the prize (and partial inspiration) for this contest!

Does it have to be a specific 'Deathwatch' team, or within the Spirit of a Deathwatch squad. E.g. For me a Deathwatch team is the elite of the elite, a squad of Marines who just come in, get the job done, get out. I'm looking at painting up a squad of Lotd instead to do this.

As Lotd are not a specifc 'Deathwatch' squad, would I be allowed to enter them or not??

Thanks.

A bit of everything really....... Titanicus, Bolt Action, Cruel Seas, Black Seas, Blood Red Skies, Kingdom Death, Relic Knights, DUST Tactics, Zombicide the lit goes on.............

You can get them in the bits that come with a tactical squad.

I think Chapterhouse do them too.

The goal is to paint up a Kill Team member or whole squad. What defines a Kill Team is that it is made up of Marines from a variety of chapters, but they have all painted their armor black except for their left hand, arm and shoulder pad which are all silver (and the shoulderpad features the Deathwatch symbol). Their right shoulder pad retains their original chapter heraldry.

So to abide by the spirit of the compeition you would need to paint up a marine or marines in this manner.

It likely means(at least in every other painting challenge) that you can not have photos showing your project on DakkaDakka or on your own personal P&M blogs prior to the actual judging/voting.

The whole point of the painting challenge is it's anonymous and to avoid potential favoritism.

Howard A Treesong wrote:What do people suggest for a Deathwatch shoulderpad?

It depends on what you want, really.
The Dark Angels Chapter Upgrade Kit includes a DA themed Deathwatch shoulderpad. The Command Squad/Tactical Squad also have a "standard" Deathwatch bit.
Personally though, I'd go for the metal upgrade kit from GW. It gives you some nice "advanced" looking bolters, enough shoulderpads for an entire Kill-Team(in case you ever decide you want to model one), helmets with the =I= emblazoned on it, etc.

Hmm...I'm still getting back into painting, but I think I may have a go at this one, especially since I intend to do a mini persona for the Legio B&C over on the B&C.

Good luck to those participating.

Actually I have a kill team from when it first came out. But it's already been made and I don't want to break any of it up and don't want to buy a whole set of stuff for a single shoulderpad. I do have a spare DW bolter though. I may just try converting a pad or making something a bit different.

What this means, is that the models must be converted and painted solely for this contest. You can't have created them previously and posted them elsewhere.

Also keep in mind that you must send WIP pics with the completed model to be considered for judging.

A quick question from a dude who isn't au fait with the rules/fluff - are Deathwatch Kill Teams able to field Terminators?

While I don't know if there is any specific GW fluff concerning members of the Deathwatch wearing terminator armor. They do have access to a wide selection of weapons and armor that is not normally available to regular space marines. So it would definitely be cool for this contest for you to model some up.

This might be the inspiration I need to finish my Deathwatch team.

Two questions:

-Can my WiP photo be of a model that is assembled and primed black, but otherwise unpainted?

-How many models must comprise a Deathwatch "team" entry?

While I'm not a judge, I'd assume that's fine. It shows that you've built the model and it's unpainted, with no detail etc picked out.

-How many models must comprise a Deathwatch "team" entry?

Again: not a judge, but I'd guess 5 at minimum?

1) That's fine. The goal of the 'WIP' photo is simply to help reinforce the fact that you painted the model, as opposed to just pulling a finished pic off the internet somewhere...not to say that you couldn't find a WIP photo on the 'net if you really wanted to try to 'cheat', but the requirement makes it a bit harder for people to do so.

2) The team can be comprised of as many or as few models as you'd like to tackle.

Here is a link to some info on the Deathwatch. I personally knew pretty much nothing about them.

Arghh, I just took a look at that. It's almost perfect - I love the bolters, and the shoulderpads... and half the heads. Unfortunately, 5 heads are bare headed, which is fine, but they're the exact same head, which is very noticeable when bare-headed and yelling - bah!

Still a nice kit though. I think I'll pass on this, as I don't need or want any more marines, and can't use the prize (which is neat). Waiting for an Necron or Ork competition.

The model I would like to enter is half finished :S maybe I could be given a thing to put next to my WIP so they know I painted it? Like privately be told to put a hormagaunt standing next to it?

Or would posting a WIP of my model with his...armour/body/chitin/hide/skin (not revealing anything) with his base colour painted on still be allowed?

You're not posting anything anywhere, you're emailing the pictures to dakkapaintingchallenge@dakkadakka.com

As far as WIP being a mini that's base coated that should be fine. See yakfaces post above.
