Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

In the Codex Imperialis is gives a rundown of the first 9 High Lords of Terra whos seats never change, and it does a good job explaining on the page before why they are High Lords.

Then it goes on to say that the other 3 are chosen from among these offices:
Lord Commander of the Segmentum Solar
Lord Commander Militant of the Imperial Guard
Cardinal(s) of the Holy Synod of Terra
The Abbess Sanctorum of the Adepta Sororitas
Captian-General of the Adeptus Custodes
Chancellor of the Estate Imperium
The Speaker for the Chartest Captians.

I understand the roles for most of them, but it doesn't explain what the:
Lord Commander of the Segmentum Solar and the The Speaker for the Chartest Captians do. What are they, and what are their jobs?

Thanks!

Segmentum Solar is the Segmentum that Terra is in, and hence the "most important".

The Chartest Captains I would guess would have something to do with Navigators. Aren't they supposed to be nobility in the Imperium?

The Lord Commander is the overall military commander of the Segmentum Solar, at least as far as the Imperial Guard and Adeptus Titanicus/Legio Metalica are concerned. Macharius was the Lord Commander in his time, hence the title Lord Commander Solar Macharius. Presumably there is also a Lord Commander Ultima, Lord Commander Tempestus, and the like, but Segmentum Solar has Holy Terra in it and is therefore most important.

The Speaker for the Chartist Captains is the representative of the Navigator Families, presumably a high-ranking officer of the Navis Nobilitate.

Its been said that the Lord Solar has more authority than a Warmaster, which would mean that in times of military necessity he would be able to supercede the council of high lords. The navigators already have a rep in the Paternoval Envoy of Navigators which is always there, but if you've read Wolfblade he has no power of his own. I'd say that best bet is that its a respresentative for all the rogue traders and charter merchant captains. While they may not seem like much compared to the other members they are extremely wealthy and there are a multitude of them. Also see that it is a speaker for the captains and has no formal title. Its probably a mostly political curtesy like the Navigator envoy. In the Eisenhorn novels its said by the ship master Tobias Maxilla that shipmasters are the new elite of the Imperium. Its possible that with their rise into prominence, sort of like a pseudo middle class that they were given a possible seat on the council as a mark of respect and acknowledgement of their vital importance in keeping the Imperium running.

Because I thought I had the answer and felt like replying. I'm a fluff nut. Don't you have anything better to do than to try to put someone else down simply because of their interest in an old post?

Dude, the post is A YEAR OLD TOPIC. It's dead, anybody that was interested long, long moved on. I suggest you do too.

Warsmith Dave...

PLEASE DON'T RESURRECT THREADS THAT ARE SO OLD.

Seriously, its annoying and if its a year old, it usually means no one cares. If you feel you'd like to add something constructive, START A NEW POST.

This is basic web board etiquette.

WarsmithDave,

I appreciate that you are fluff nut and we welcome your insight. However in general, topics that haven't been posted in quite a while should generally be left to rest. This is because the appearance of an old thread can bump newer (more relevant) topics off the front page. This can be especially annoying when several old threads are simultaneously brought to the front page.

Now. . .thread necromancy (as its refered to) isn't nearly as big an issue with a fluff forum, where the information in a thread tends not to lose its relevance over time (for the most part, 40k fluff stays the same).

However, in many cases, the threads you've posted in were specific questions by people looking for an answer. A year later, it's likely the person found that answer or no longer even needs or wants the answer. Please remember, a forum isn't simply a place to post one's musings, but rather a place for a discussion between two (or more) people. Such an old thread means the dicussion has generally 'moved on'.

In closing, please attempt to keep the thread Necromancy to a minimum (one month or older threads in the other forums and two months or more in the fluff forum is a good rule of thumb).

On the other hand, everyone else, (as I mentioned above) in this forum, the information discussed tends not to lose relevance like it does in other forums, so let's all be a little more relaxed when someone has some valid information to add to an old topic.
