BGB PG 50

All characters have the Move Through Cover and Skilled Rider special Rules (See Pg 75)

...

When an independent character joins a unit, it might have different special rules from those of the unit. Unless specified in the rule itself (like in the Stubborn special rule), the unit's special rules are not conferred upon the character, and the character's special rules are not conferred upon the unit.

In some cases though, the character or the unit may lose their special rules as a result of the character joining the unit...

BGB PG 75

The Special Rules marked with an asterick (*) are automatically lost by an independent character joining a unit that does not have the same special rule. These rules are also lost by a unit that is joined by an independant character that does not have the same special rule.

BOTH 'Move Through Cover' and 'Skilled Rider' do not have an asterick.

Does this mean..

A - The special rule is conferred.

B - The special rule isn't conferred, but gained back after the IC leaves the squad.

Do the astericks mean that those rules are lost for the entire game, or just not conferred?

Please note - terms like 'always/never' are carried with the basic understanding that there are exceptions to the rule, and therefore are used to mean generally...

In this case, if the IC is joined he loses move through cover as he has to move at the same speed as the unit.
He should keep the skilled rider skill as the checks are made on a model by model basis.
Conclusions drawn sans rulebook.

What are you really trying to ask here? You've quoted all of the relevent parts which make it clear.

ICs have the rule. Units they join don't gain the rule. Since there's no asterik then the character doesn't lose the rule.

Confusion on what the asterick actually means.

Does a skill with an asterick get permanently lost if IC joins up with them?

No, not permanently. Just as long as he's joined.
On his own or with a unit with the same rules he can use them again.

So ALLLLLLLL of the special rules in the USR are not conferred unto squad by IC, or IC by squad - unless the rule there says soooo..

Then why have the asterick?

So the IC can us 'Move through cover' and 'Skilled Rider', but the squad can't? What about unit coherency?

Please note - terms like 'always/never' are carried with the basic understanding that there are exceptions to the rule, and therefore are used to mean generally...

Why the asterisk? It's there to limit IC's and units that use Counter-Attack, Fleet, Hit&Run, Infiltrate, Scouts, and Turbo-Boosters.
They are only possible if all the models are capable.

For example, an IC with Counter-Attack can't make his Counter-Attack move if he's in a unit that can't Counter-Attack. Without the asterisk he could.

The IC can "Move Through Cover" but he does have to maintain unit coherency. He doesn't lose the skill but neither can he use it.

The IC can "Move Through Cover" but he does have to maintain unit coherency. He doesn't lose the skill but neither can he use it.

I think this is the exact correct ruling. The IC does not lose those abilities when he's with a unit, nor does he pass them on to the unit. He can still move through cover and he is still a skilled rider, but he still has to maintain unit coherreny so the skills might become less effective.

However, if a unit moves at the speed of the slowest model.

If the unit rolls 3" for DT, while the IC rolls 6", he can still only move 3" because that is the slowest speed in the unit.

Unless DT rolls do not dictate the speed of the unit, and are simply a variable? Kind of like how a rapid fire weapon shooting twice at 12" still has a 'range' of 24"?

Remember : "All models in a unit move at the speed of the slowest model." pg15 BGB

It does not matter if the IC can maintain coherency with the unit while still moving faster, he is a member of the unit, and as long as he is a member of the unit he must move at the same speed as the rest of them. No leap-frogging from the back of the unit to the front because the IC rolled a 6 and the unit rolled a 2. The IC must move 2" as well.

If you want to go ahead and roll both sets of dice, thats fine by me, but make sure you rol the two set seperately because you must take the lower of the two "highest die" results.

Squad rolls a 2 and the IC rolls a 6, or the IC rolls a 2 and the Squad rolls a 6. Either way everyone only moves 2".
