Is it worth getting?
All the reviews I’ve read talk about how it compares to the original and is good remastering and hits all the right nostalgic notes. But they don’t say much about the game itself.

I haven’t played any of the metroid prime game’s before so how similar or how improved it is doesn’t really help me.

What’s the game play like? And how does it stand up in 2023?

I should say I’m not particularly keen on first person games (I play Skyrim in 3rd person for example) and I don’t care for first person shooters. But I’m a big fan of the 2d metroid games. The whole reason i skipped it when it first came out was because it’s first person. I’ve always wanted a 3d 3rd person metroid game more like the 3d zeldas.

So is it a FPS in a metroid skin or is it a metroid game that happens to be in first person?

Metroid Prime is an absolute classic. If you're a Metroid fan you should absolutely check it out because it does a masterful job of translating the franchise to 3D.

It's definitely more of a Metroid game than a FPS. There's a lock on mechanic that handles most of the aiming and combat takes a backseat to exploration and secret hunting. They get the right mix of clearing some not particularly threatening enemies and searching the environment. There's a phenomenal transition to 3rd person for the morph ball and in 1st you have access to a variety of visors to hunt for secrets. Top it off with some memorable boss encounters and it really just feels like a Metroid game through and through.

Definitely worth a try and I think it holds up. I don't think either sequel tops the original so much as just gives you more of what was already a great game so its really aged well.

Sounds like it’s worth getting then, thanks!

I have to echo everything LunarSol said, that was one of the best adventure games of that era. Plus, the soundtrack is amazing. It's a very atmospheric game.

Yup, I'll echo too. I didn't care for FPS games back in the day and longed for one that played just like Super Metroid, but in 3D. Prime is excellent.

Echoes and Corruption are pretty good too, but Hunters and Federation Force are a different matter altogether.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.
