Huh, thought we had a topic on this one already, but I guess it's tucked away in an older Skulls thread or something.

So yeah, coming out in five days, anybody else looking forward to this one?

I'm still hoping for a physical release announcement instead of just digital only. Probably pick up a digital copy on Xbox until then.

I wouldn't expect it. A physical release is just an extra cost for no reason.

Big companies can soak it if they really want to, but for a small studio its just a burden.

Yeah, usually in the case of physical releases for games like this, it's usually as part of a limited edition pre-order bundle with other collectibles to justify the cost, which really inflates the price and ensures that if it shows up on eBay afterwards that it's marked up quite a bit, so be careful what you wish for.

Many 'physical' releases nowadays consist of a box with a printed download code in them anyways. That ship has mostly sailed, outside of collector's editions and other, usually overpriced crap.

I have a physical copy of Blood & Teef and that wasn't exactly from a massive developer. I have many physical copies of games from very small companies. None of them are "code in a box", which sadly do exist.

Xbox/PS5/PC is pretty much digital but I collect Switch physical and there quite a few. Now sometimes you have to go outside the US for them but thanks to the internet that isn't that difficult.

It's definitely an interesting juxtaposition they are going for with the 80s-retro look. I would have liked some similarly retro-looking marines (RTB-01 style guys with "kil-kil-kil" written on their armour), but at least they are trying to do something different.

As for physical media, I always thought an opportunity has been lost not having a small games section, perhaps alongside the BL books. I still remember Bolt Thrower cassettes being on sale in GW stores, so there kind of is a precedent!

Just been playing it for about an hour or so. it's...fine? Not great, not revolutionary in any way, it's a fun way to kill some time.

Everything being various shades of brown and gray makes navigation a complete PITA, the game needs a minimap or objective markers or something, it's very easy to miss the entrance to the next section, which just kills the momentum dead.

Gunplay feels fun, especially grabbing Kraken bolts and being able to chew through marines. Everything else dies pretty easily to regular bolts. Haven't found a good use case for the shotgun yet, there are very few situations so far where being able to engage at longer ranges isn't better than the damage trade-off.

It's basically exactly what it was sold as. it's Doom with a 40k skin and some modern gameplay additions, nothing less, but not much more either

Worth picking up when it drops sub-£10 in a sale

I'm having fun so far, though caveat, I am not the core demographic for the twitchy boomer shooter gameplay these games usually require, so I am playing it on tourist difficulty. Shotgun has been very satisfying for me, though the boltgun is also a joy to employ, ludicrous gibs everywhere, might be the best ingame boltgun representation to date. Don't like the plasma gun though, the projectile is a bit too slow for me, can't wait to get the volkite.

And oh yes, the sassy Nurgling is in and they moon you before commencing their attack.

Agreed on the map design, it could do with some more visual cues, which are sometimes present (yellow paint) and other times, the doors you need to open with keys, can be hard to find, the red or purple blending in a bit too well with the rest of the map. Some of the maps though, they have some cool stuff in the background, like this disabled titan.

Yeah, played for an hour and basically agree with everything Charax & BrookM wrote. It's mindless fun but has lots of style, and barely surviving with 14 HP (you have 250 HP because you're a Space Marine, obvi) only to survive by sniping a bunch of also half-dead chaos termies and super annoying flamers from around a corner is basically what I wanted from a 40K boomer shooter. Eerie synthwave music is cool, too.

It works. It's unrefined in places, but it's very fun to just blaze away with your gun and dodge projectiles.

The thing about 40k is that no one person can grasp the fullness of it.

It's not revolutionary in any way, but it is great fun and is (IMO) one of the better depictions of 40k in video games in terms of style. The little touches like taunting and nurglings mooning you is great.

In many ways, it feels like they took the best of Brutal Doom and left out the gak parts.

Why would a game like this not be digital distribution exclusively?

I discovered that the idle animation is you pulling out a book, probably the codex Astartes, and casually reading it.

They've added Steam trading cards to the game, so for those looking to collect some badges and a few extra emotes, including a very sassy one, rejoice!
