If my 2+/4++ unit is being attacked with an ap-2 group of weapons, and my opponent chooses not to buff those attacks with another ap (redundant), and then I choose to buff my armor with an ap reduction, does my opponent then get to counter my decision with using his ap stratagem? Or does the order of decisions keep them from doing that because I am the defender, and countering my decision is too late at that point?

I ask because it has a very real impact on that battle sequence. If they cannot counter my decision, I win out on both ends because in case A, my opponent wastes a command point fishing for my buff, and in case B, I save on 3s because the save is buffed and my opponent cannot use the stratagem to buff their ap, because it's too late for them to make that decision.

Do you have specific stratagems in mind for this example? That might provide some clarity

Yea.

If one stratagem is "when you pick unit to shoot" and other "when unit is chosen as target" then attacker does first, no going back.

If stratagem triggers aren"t those need more specicic stratagems to figure out

And it does. After a closer look, it seems as though it is legal for the attacker to counter the defender's stratagem use, and here is why:

Take Honour the Chapter for example. The condition is simply in "The Fight Phase" which could mean any time during. This by itself is enough for a ruling.

The reason I believe it is fair is because both my opponent and I are spending a CP to negate each other and there is an eventual end to the countering, since there are only so many stratagems you can use in a given phase.

If they have different time stamps eg. Selected to shoot and targeting they resolve at different points

But you can't go "STRATAGEM X" now you can't do anything at the previous point as you have to be clear they have moved from selecting to targeting and most people coloquially would say I'm firing all of my knights guns at your predator and I'm going to use STRATAGEM Y which occurs at selecting to shoot (even though they've already targeted)

If they occur at the same point you follow the sequencing rules
