Basically, list your favorite military units in 40k and explain why you like them.

SM - Space Wolves - These guys are basically a definition of noble barbarian. First impression for most civilians would likely be "I gotta get the hell away from these guys"... and then they get to know them.

SM - Raven Guard - Same reasons as with Space Wolves, minus the "barbarian" thing - though they may actually be even scarier to average civilian than Space Wolves would be.

SM - Lamenters - What can I say? I'm a sucker for "I remain a decent guy despite all the gak universe throws at me" stories. And this.

SM - Black Templars - Basically? Fell in love with them due to the Helsreach.

IG - Cadian Shock Troops (and Cadian Regiments in general) - OK, this one is likely in part due to exposure... they are the prototypical IG regiment. But I really like the fact that they don't really have any interesting quirks... just discipline, perserverence and faith in the Emperor.

IG - Valhallan Ice Warriors - CAIN! Also the fact that Valhallans are (in Ciaphais Cain books) portrayed as being both doggedly determined as well as rather pragmatic. Not sure how much of that is Cain's influence, but definitely something I liked.

IG - Tanith First And Only - They are basically Dunedain Rangers... IN SPEHSS! So yeah.

IG - Praetorian Guard - Redcoats in Space.

* The Geno 5-2 Chiliad from Legion. An example of humanity playing around with bioengineering and supporting their forces with psychics. There's a lot of fun sci-fi/fantasy stuff going on there of a sort that we don't see throughout the imperium nearly as often as we should.

* SM - Alpha Legion: Because I like tricky, unorthodox solutions to problems.

* The Poisoned Tongue Kabal: Because I like tricky, unorthodox solutions to problems.

* SM- Thousand Sons. Specifically their GC/HH era incarnation. As with the Geno guys, I find it interesting to see how they use codified psychic abilities to support their forces. It makes sense for the legion, and the different specializaitons from this era are frankly more interesitng than the half a dozen synonyms for "lying" that we got in the last codex.

* Lamenters: Because I, too, am a sucker for a less-evil-than-usual character in a grimdark setting. Salamanders can go here for similar reasons.

* Ynnari: This one might be cheating as it's more of a whole religious movement than a specific millitary unit. Basically, I love their desperate fight for a better future and their willingness to die because they're trusting their comrades to ensure that they'll reincarnate. They have beaten-up-anime-porotag-finding-new-reserves-of-strength-for-a-final-attack-against-the-big-bad energy. Plus, while the ynnari aren't necessarily "good people," themes of putting aside differences and working together are a big part of this faction. I like seeing those little glimmers of not-terribleness. The grimdark tastes better when you have something more optimistic to struggle against it; even if that struggle ultimately ends up failing.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Imperial Guard. Any entirely generic, non-specialised non-legendary Regiment.

The meat and gristle of the overall Imperial war machine. The lads and lassies given training, a Lasgun and one-size-fits-none Flak Armour, then unceremoniously chucked into a war zone. The untold billions of Nobodies who by grit and sheer bloody mindedness keep The Imperium going.

They’re the heroes.

I'm going to note the space wolves have a space place in my heart for being "peak 40k" people often criticize the space wolves for being over the top, but... to my mind thats kinda the point.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

On Space Woofs?

They are pretty iconic. Completely hatstand bonkers mental genetically crafted space murder vikings.

They have a strong look, and a pretty rad background.

I even like Grimnar’s Space Santa Sleigh. But even so, I think it’s perfectly understandable for others to find it a bit overcooked in that regard.
