So I've just finished my first model in... too long - at the time of writing this photo represents my entire collection of Games Workshop miniatures. Long story short, I had to sell it all about a decade ago (my Galleries are just memories now!) but the release of Warhammer: The Old World has finally sparked enough interest to finally get back into the hobby... whether I will actually manage to get any games in is another question entirely...

My approach: I'm essentially going to try to rebuild what has been lost... starting with the Sister Superior as Warrior Priestess below. Have to say she fits the 25mm base better than the 20mm!

Nicely painted mini, but a not so great base.

Redid the base (fair point made above, it was rather low effort) and finished up Bertha as a second Warrior Priest on Foot. Coming next: Greatswords and Witch Hunter, then a long wait for the Empire models release...

(the obligatory rear view of Bertha is in the Gallery lol)

Done the Greatswords (well, nearly, still need to do something with the banner but I've already messed it up once...) and probably a little more on a couple of the bases...

Thank you, I appreciate the comment!

I've run out of models to paint now I've done my Witch Hunter... and with eBay prices going bananas this'll probably be my last update until the Empire (re-)releases come around. Currently painting the movement tray for the greatswords and after that... dunno. Might try finish some of my Elite: Dangerous 3D prints while I wait...

Welp, while I wait to be able to get some new models, this is everything so far. Finally drummed up the courage to have a go at freehand again... hopefully the next one will be better!

The banner looks great, bold and simple. It always scares me when I want to freehand something on to an already painted mini, feeling like it could make or break the paint job.

Yours stands up really well though and I love seeing the old Empire models. Spending my days praying now that GW decide to release most of them as plastics.

Thanks - I did bork up the first attempt and ended up scraping all the paint off it and starting over.

Going by what's come back for Brets and Tomb Kings (and the preview of the Orcs) I'm reasonably confident they'll be bringing back the plastic Greatswords box, probably also with a unit in the 'big army box' - they were one of the newer Empire kits when WHFB got canned.

At least, I hope so because I want to use them to build better plastic Knights - assuming we get the 1990s ones back - and put the banners on my State Troops!

My local GW shop guy assures me they are in the pipeline.

I haven't gone full on Old World yet, I'm just about resisting the temptation, but I am wanting to replace my Warcry human warband with models a little more frilly.

Got hold of a Mordheim Reiklander Captain, who will do nicely as a Sollander Captain

Dogs of War General painted up with Solland colours, along with a Monstrous Encounters 3D-print wizard. She's Demonology and a redhead, hence the extra purity seals for the General. I'll have to come up with a backstory for my characters... currently wondering about having the Witch Hunter be her older brother and Dad's the general... anyway...

I have some Core!

Test model for my spearman unit.

This model (and a bunch of others) came second hand and layered in paint with generous amounts of plastic glue. I was planning on running the Spears without shields but there was no saving the shield arm on so many models that I ended up getting some 3rd party heater shields and popping them on. Unfortunately this means I have to up my freehand game to do the Solland emblem on 28 shields.

Was planning a simple wash and highlight but the some of the details on these old models are so shallow I ended up doing it the hard way. Happy with the result, if not the time taken to get there. 27 to go (plus command, but they're nice metal models so yay)

It's a good thing the Empire release is a long time off...

They are done! After two marathon painting sessions over the weekend. I can't say I've ever spent this amount of time painting models that are... let's be honest... "not great" quality sculpts...

Quite happy with the outcome, though!

You say metal models but those are the plastic ones and they did come with round shields with a lionshead. I have 50 in two units i like them because you needed only glue the spear and shield on and those handgunners in the same starter box where great to, you only did have to putting the rifle on some of the models.

Second Great Cannon and crew done. This is an old metal model that was painted (neatly) with enamel paints. Again, sniped the bidding, waited a week, then stripped and cleaned and drilled out the cannon a bit. I decided to paint it up in the style of the 4th Edition War Machines with the wood painted in the the army colours:

Edit: Just realised I didn't post the 6th Edition plastic cannon in this thread:

I do really appreciate the replies guys, they're very motivating!

I did put my the crew onto the base of the cannons so its a little diorama. And use a dice to show the wounds left.

I was tempted to do that, I do love the littel dioramas and I have the bits and bobs that came with the plastic cannon... but this is less effort. I mean, going to be easier to transport

Great looking army, really like the Solland colors and emblems. Your freehand is really good. Old metal empire is really peak warhammer for me, so will follow this one.

Latest update: Got a couple of small units of State Troops done (probably detachments, but I've not written a list yet so who knows). All of these models were bought cheap off eBay because they were in a right mess - there was no saving some of the detail, hence the black 'jackets' on the many models... a lot of the heads had to be pinned and new necks added with green stuff, and a little bit of bitzbashing to get all the parts together. Quite happy with the result and they should pass the 'view from 4ft away' test!

Yes, I know swordsmen are rubbish in TOW, but it's all I could make with what I have!

They look great. Did they come with the round shields, or do you have a good source for those? Looking for that style shield for my own army.
