The hobbying quality and painting productivity on this blog is truly impressive. I love the Thousand Son scheme you’re using here, and the basing really makes it pop!

Awesome vehicle work too, what’s that dust effect on the tracks?

One thing I’ve learned from this thread, do not get a 3-D printer LOL

Thanks!! I'm nearing 400 models in this army now, hopefully GW dont release a new HH box set because I'll be in trouble if that happens haha

gobert wrote:That Red really pops! Love the tacticals and terminators!

Cheers, I'm very happy with the new red, definitely got be invested in painting again

3D printers are definitely a dangerous investment haha, opens a lot of possibilities though! The dust effects are simply some weathering powders applied liberally over the tracks (and bases) and then brushed off. I got my powders from FW but they have since been discontinued, there are lots of other manufacturers out there though I believe.

Speaking of 3D printers, I've been making it work hard churning out ancient and incredibly ugly dreadnoughts, take a look!

Based off the very first dreadnought model, the Furibundus Pattern is now scaled up a bit and ready for action

Moments after I had finished printing that guy, I found a file for a modernized version which looks incredible, by giving it a couple of shoulder mounted missile launchers, it is now a Furibundus MK2!

I'm exited to paint those guys up, very curious to see what a modern paint scheme will do to them.

For the next batch of dreads, I took inspiration from the old Space Crusade Dreadnought from 1990, a weird looking design which came in two varieties, one with two gun mounts and a much larger one with 4 mounts. I'll name these the Crusader Pattern Dreadnought since they never got named in any official capacity from what I can tell.

Again, some tallented sculptor revised the old model and this is the end result.

It is a little heavy on the detailing for my tastes so I may attack it with my dremmel at some point so I can add my own details.

I also wanted a classic version, being unable to find a version with the four weapon mounts, I decided to just arm the biger fella with some bigger guns from the Leviathan Dreadnought kit.

He turned out absolutely massive and printing one little bit of leg proved to be the bane of my existence, taking 4 days and 5 attempts to get it right due to sizing issues and my own general incompetence!

I think I will add some more details to the top of the weapon mounts as they are a little bland at the moment.

That rounds out the dreadnought printing for today!

Of course every dreadnought needs some living space marines stood next to them for company. As such I decided to print off some other obscure armour patterns, firstly some terminators based off the original sculpts.

These guys are very similar to the modern version, the only major differences being the helmet design and different leg armour. I decided to embrace the scale creep so there terminators tower over most of my other models, with some clever basing though I should be able to blend them right in.

Continuing the trend of original sculpts. The original space marine looked very much like a beaky but had some differences, namely the helmet visor, backpack with upward pointing vents, and very ornate trim on the legs.

It took me a long time, but I was eventually able to source files that, when put together, make a great looking model. I'll name this the MK6.5 "Imperial" Pattern Armour, originally designed mid-way through the Horus Heresy intended to replace the MK6 Corvus Armour, however due to vital forgeworlds being completely destroyed during the heresy, only prototypes of the armour survived, never making it into full production.

Right. I've really got to stop printing more models and get back to painting! I'm currently finishing up a flamer squad and then maybe I will tackle some of the dreadnoughts that seem to keep popping up out of nowhere...

This is why I shouldn’t buy a resin printer! Really cool prints though, the Terminators remind me of that Space Shark character, Tyberos. I like the fancy mk6.5 lads and their curvy scythes

Thanks Gobert! Yeah Tyberos is the only official example of that armour to my knowledge, I'm a big fan of the brutal design.

I've been busy painting some larger models this time, got some dreadnoughts and tanks off the to-do list!

Starting with the dreads first, I finally got the monopose Contemptor done, very happy with how he turned out.

I then finished up the Deredeo, good timing considering the plastic model just got announced! I think I could spend a little more time on this guy as it looks a little flat at the moment, maybe add some transfers of tidy up the silver parts a little.

Turns out my dreadnought collection is quite substantial now, 15 and counting...

The tank hunter got a splash of paint, I really like this model, quite tempted to print a couple more to make a cool little group of them.

Finally I completed the Spartan, a massive tank but it didn't take as long as I thought it would. The technique of airbrushing all the metallic red and then picking out small sections in white really helps speed up the process.

That is a serious amount of painting you got done! Love the Dreadnoughts, the deredeo is definitely my favourite, he looks great in metallic red!

Thanks man! Trying to keep the momentum going as long as I can.

I'm going to try and start off my weekend with a bang, got 20 tacticals all done up in their shiny red armour, to make them more fun to paint, each one has a unique bolter variant for a little added spice. I'll take some better pictures when they are finished!

Of course, all those marines need something to be carried around in so I have started what will be around 48 hours of solid printing to make one of the biggest vehicles they have in their arsenal, the Mastodon heavy transport...

Thanks!

The painting is coming along nicely, filled in the gold and blacks and got all the white on the guns finished which is quite satisying to do, really helps break up all the red armour.

The Mastodon is slowly taking shape, printing the main body sections is very time consuming, the top section is currently chugging away and will take 14 hours to print!

That mastodon is huge! No wonder it takes while to print! The tacticals are coming along really. The mix of Bolter types is cool

Thanks Gobert!

The tacs are all finished, another 20 down!

And as a special treat, I stretched the old painting muscles out and did a HQ model to the best of my abilities, Magistus Amon. The guy is plastered in gems and intricate details which were fun to do. His big potato of a head was super tricky, I've never been good painting fleshtones but I am happy with the end result!

Printing of the Mastodon has stalled until I can get a new shipment of resin but I did have a package of new models arrive today that I'll try and get built to show off tomorrow!

Amazing progress as usual Commander Cain It's nice seeing both the tactical marines and Amon. How large is your painted Thousand Sons by this point? I'm hoping for an end of the year picture.

Ask and ye shall recieve! I was planning on laying everything out to see where my collection was at, turns out, rather big...

As for what's painted and what's not, I have approx 240 done, 150 left.

10 of those unpainted models are some fantastic looking retro terminators from Tortuga Studios, take a look!

Yeah it's come along way since it's humble beginnings in 2011!

Finally it is complete. The biggest tank in a Space Marine's arsenal, this guy towers over a Baneblade and eats Rhinos for breakfast.

I have a little more tidying up of the armour panels to do but other than that, it is ready for painting!

Your models look great! What are you using for the red? Blood Angels Red or Tamiya Gloss Clear Red?

Thanks guys!

The red is done through an airbrush, first, a couple of layers of gold, then finished off with Angron Red air I believe it's called, (I think Baal Red would be the contrast paint equivalent) after that, I just add a quick wash of Nuln Oil and call it done!

I've been slacking on keeping the blog updated but the Mastodon is now finished along with a whole host of other models, take a look!

It is actually so big I had a hard time taking good pictures of it, my phone has a short depth of field it would seem so everything tends to get blurry fast

In addition to the big fella, I also painted up my final MKIII squad I have had sitting around forever (just in time for the new MKIII kits to get launched...)

Then I thought, why not? I'll finish the last of my MKVI kits as well! The 3D printed jump packs turned out really well, I'll be interested to see how they compare to the plastic ones when they get released.

Next up, I tackled another squad of Saturnine termies, might need to make some changes to the banner, I did not have a transfer that fit too well so I may have to break out the freehand skills to add some more details.

Here's the full 10-man squad all complete

By this point I was fully burnt out with painting infantry so I took a break of sorts and quickly painted up the retro Furibundus Dreadnought, I actually love the design now it is done, there's a real menacing vibe to it.

Phew, that's another 37 models down, only 150ish left before I'm all caught up!

Amazing work Commander! The Mastodon turned out amazingly well, must’ve been a bit of a slog being such a huge mini. Love the furibundus, is he upscaled to match the contemptor size? The Assault Marines packs look super cool, even if the GW ones do look different these will still fit well in my opinion

Thanks all!

I had a bit of a dreadnought painting binge on my last days off, some of which were repaints of ones I did a long time ago but was never really happy with, behold!

Starting off with a few Castraferrum Dreadnoughts we have a sorcerer variant

Then a nice basic one, this guy has been repainted so many times!

Then a more ornate, venerable one. Still have to do a plasma glow on his gun but I'm going to do a mass plasma paint to save on pesky airbrush cleaning time.

And finally an ironclad version, complete with a dangerously exposed torso

The last repaint of the bunch was my converted Dreadnight, he fits in a lot better with a newer models now

Now for some new stuff!

This fully 3-D printed one I am running as a Lucifer Pattern Dreadnought since there is no official model for one, it's basically the size of a Contemptor but with bigger limbs.

Last but not least, the big chunky Leviathan, currently my favourite of the bunch!

Phew, that was a lot of red. I just have four more dreadnoughts to paint and then I will be all done with the big guys. I am off the next few days so hopefully I can get them all done and then take a big group shot of them all.

Cheers! Yeah I'm glad I went with a colour other than red, it really helps break up such a massive model.

gobert wrote:Awesome Dreadnoughts! The Dread knight conversion is cool, but I do love a dangerously exposed torso too!

Thanks! It felt nice to get all those dreads painted up, their sub-par previous paintjobs have been haunting me for years haha

I've been pretty productive lately, both in the painting and printing departments. Last week I finished my squad of MK2 Cobra Terminators, they're definitely my favourite termie design, hopefully GW decide to release an official version one day.

I also painted a Primus Medicae, a model that I have wanted ever since FW showed it off back in 2016!

I also painted up the updated design of the Furibundus Dreadnought. Again, I wish GW would start churning out some redesigns of their classic models, it would be amazing in plastic!

Here he is next to his retro brother

My printer has also been busy lately, starting with a Disintegrator Squad in Imperial pattern armour

I was pretty low on HQ models, a few hours later and this was the result. I'm particularly excited to paint the sorcerer, Hathor Maat which looks just like his artwork.

Finally, in my continuing quest to have one of everything, I whipped up a couple of retro Landspeeder designs, the flying couch and hover brick

I feel like these guys need some backpacks, they look oddly naked without them...

Next up, I think I will tackle the Recon squad that's been on my desk for ages, I hate painting fabric so their cloaks have been putting me off for a while now!

Thanks guys!

It seems like every time I don't think I have much in the way of progress to post, then I get to taking pictures and realize I have piles of stuff to report on!

I actually did a little repainting this time, updating a razorback and fellblade to the new metallic paint scheme, behold

As promised, I also finished my recon squad, I settled on a deserty style cape that blends in pretty well with the base style I have gone for.

That's it for completely finished stuff, however I am a few skin tones and eye lenses away from a finished terminator squad...

A blast of airbrush engine glow and this hover tank will be all wrapped up

As for brand-new plastic that I definitely don't need, I got the HH battleforce recently and got to work making it a little more unique

First up, I wanted to have a tank hunter squad, having all the same missile launcher seemed dull though so I trawled the internet and eventually gave them every model of launcher that I could find. Everything from the most recent version, to the original Rogue Trader designs.

Given that the box came with lots of volkites, I did up a squad armed with them, and printed a few heavy volkites for variety

And to all the naysayers who claim MK3 armour is slow and cumbersome, I whipped up an assault squad, complete with some of the chunkiest jump packs I could find!

And finally for that kit, I built up the Deredeo dreadnought to add to my rapidly growing collection of dreads

As if that wasn't enough to paint, I did a mini squad of marines wearing MK16 Damocles armour (from the fan fiction Dornian Heresy universe)

Aaaand finally, for a look at what is currently on my workbench, here we have a flyer, Telemon Dreadnought, and a couple of HQ's!

Assuming this is my last post for a while, happy holidays to everyone, I'll be back in the new year with lots more things painted red!

Thanks Gobert!

Happy new year all, I figured I would start off my painting with an HQ model to get back in the groove, I decided to do up my 3D print of Hathor Maat. It was super detailed but I think I did it justice. Hopefully GW decide to release some more named characters for the Thousand Sons. There are so many with unique designs that I would love to add to my collection...
