I love the new counters they're putting out for 5th. However I think they're going to be so cool and easy to get that most people will have them. I have enough problems losing an average of one die a game because I picked up the coolest looking ones, which of course everyone else did too, so many people have the sames ones I do. (i'm getting new dice tonight, again)
So the goal here is to make my counters obviously unique to myself, without losing the look/feel of the green plastic that I love. I've made four test versions so far trying out a few methods. Also interested in if anyone else has messed with theirs.
1st) Unmodified, shown for comparison.
2nd) Sanded the details on the top of the counter.
3rd) Sanded the backside of the counter.
4th) Sprayed the back with a bright chrome paint.
5th) Sprayed the back with a high gloss black paint.

I like the sanded top. You could also sand the edges and then take some brass paint or rub n'buff and do the edges.

What if you spray the top black, and *then* sand the top?

I was thinking it might look good to pick out the raised bits in black paint, and leave the rest raw.

Maybe some black or dark green ink around the raised detail. It would keep the green, but make it easier to see.

Then you'd lose the clearness of the plastic that I like. If I did that it would be more of a rub off the black paint on the raised areas because it wasn't primed.

Ink, or at least the new washes, doesn't work as well as you'd think. That was the very first thing I tried, and it doesn't really flow into the details very well, you just end up with a slightly darker (depending on what color and how much wash you used) plastic.

I was thinking this would be the next thing I tried. Probably after sanding the top so the paint would stick better.

I also like the 2nd one, might steal your Idea
No, I am kidding. If I get the counters I will probably basecoat them green and highlight with white. (ala cadians). Then again, I will only get the counters if they are free, not if I have to pay for them... (12,50 Euro is not expensive, but I can buy other cool stuff for the money, and you really do not need these to play...)

I sanded the backs of mine, then added a coat of Tamiya Clear Colour 'Smoke' (a sort of black wash) to the tops, looks good.
I wanted something very durable, I suspect just painting them will result in very chipped surfaces fast if they're stored loose in a bag, which mine probsbly will be. Of course, I could design a 'battle-damaged' paint scheme to benefit from accidental chipping and scraping, but i was worried about flourescent green peeping out from under paint...
