I've always wondered how strongly light damages are a thing on miniatures, I never witnessed it myself. Like, does it really desaturate the colours or something that much? Has it ever happened to any of you?

I've had minis in a display case for a decade and nothing's happened. However, they are not in direct sunlight and I keep curtains closed as a general rule, so the UV in my house is pretty limited.

Haven't experienced it happen on paintjob (did not have anything stay in direct sunlight for long), but it sure changes FW resin from grey to yellowish.

I've had minis painted in Original GW acrylics (now Coat D'Arms) out on shelves since the late 80s with no signs of fading (although some of the old varnish has yellowed a touch on figures where i used it)

In case anyone was wondering, have now ordered one.
This’un
Bit more than I wanted to spend, but it’s 7 shelves as opposed to four, and has a built-in light.
Arriving Tuesday, and I am excited.

That's the most space (height) efficient glass-shelved cabinet I've seen, good choice.

Will also look into acrylic risers for the shelves too. Particularly for better display of my Legions Imperialis gubbins.

Nice!
None of my miniatures are what I would call "display" worthy, so their storage is based entirely on function.
For many years, I kept them in labeled travel cases, but as the collection expanded, this was too expensive to sustain. My solution was clear plastic storage drawers, which give me good visibility, and the ability to rapidly bring units out of storage and onto the tabletop. One modification I made was the remove the "keeper" that holds the drawer in place. I still have some cases, but since I have the best gaming area in my friends group, it's assumed I will host.
The drawers are stackable, and I have terrain on top, so it's a pretty formidable appearance for those admitted into the sacred precinct.
Anyhow, I recommend the drawer system for bulk storage because ranked units in particular can just be lifted straight out in their movement tray and placed onto the field of play and be returned just as easily. Vehicles reside in deeper drawers and I have a few really tall ones for cavalry with lances and monsters.

There is a rather neat multi-purpose display/transport/scenery Kickstarter running just now that is relevant to the discussion. Comes in various sizes.

Given that I doubt anyone would put those in a display case, that would be one heck of a pile! Generally they're stable, but I suppose if you were trying to dig out that one Rogue Trader-era model you've got a hankering to finally paint....

You hear about some shame piles filling up whole closets, on wheeled shelves, etc. Someone could potentially be buried when one topped over. Odds of being killed are a lot lower then getting crushed under a major piece of furniture, but it could happen...
And some of us old timers have actual lead in our piles. Normally way at the bottom, due to age and common sense. You don’t put that stuff on the top shelf.

Honestly, it would be like grain shifting, but instead of suffocation, you'd just be pinned in place, and forced saw of your limb with a pewter chainsword one inch long.

And it’s arrived. And is very, very heavy.
So heavy, it’s not a one-man job to assemble. Which means I’ll need to wait for a friend to become available to help me assemble it.
Looks to be a really solid bit of kit though. Max 5kg per shelf, which shouldn’t be any kind of problem.

To be honest, I’ve already filled the first cabinet.
Top down?
Shelf 1 and 2 is my painted Epic Dark Angels.
Shelf 3 is 28mm Heresy Dreads
Shelf 4 is 28mm Heresy Tactical Legionnaires
Shelf 5 is 28mm Heresy Support and Heavy Legionnaires
Shelf 6 is Rhino chassis tanks
Shelf 7 is Kratos and two Sicaran chassis
Base are my Spartan Chassis.
There’s more to be built, and all the 28mm to be painted. So I have already run out of space.

Came with the cabinet. It says to screw it in, but also provides one of those sticky patches. I went with the sticky patch.
The electrics include socket for multiple lights, so a clever person* could add further lights if they so wished, and not worry about running out of plugs.
*i.e. Not Me. Automatically Appended Next Post: Yeah…I ordered a second one.
Need overflow for 28mm Heresy, and shelf space for Eldar and Tyranids. Which may form part of my year long hobby streak in coming months.

So a question as I'm just trying to get a mental visual for how big the shelves are - could a white dwarf magazine or a standard Warhammer big box fit on the shelves?

Just checked. No, and no.
They’re not quite deep enough for a big box, but are plenty on width.
And at 19cm between the shelves, not enough headroom for a White Dwarf.
I’m also researching clear acrylic risers for shelves containing LI stuff. Where those are so diddy, a riser or two per shelf will effectively double the shelf space, if I can find ones in near-as-exact dimensions. Which is currently proving a challenge.
The shelves are 57cm wide, and the risers I’ve found tend to cap out at 20cm. I could of course just get two per shelf and still gain significant real estate. Same for 28mm infantry too, now I look at it proper.

I'm sure I've seen wider risers, but this is stuff that only jewelry shops and the like buy, so not very easy to find on general sale. Just don't forget you need head space for your hands to reach inside and pick up models, too.

Ahh thanks! heh and I should have said laying the DW down on its side rather than standing up (I've been storing books like that for so long I forget that upright is the more "normal" method)
But I was more thinking of just using books in the bottom shelf or two as some added lower weight to ground the shelving and so I can swap a corner of the floor from "books" to "stack of books and models and stuff"

Oh that I’ll check.
The shelving does have two which have alternative positioning. But I’ll need to look at it, with my eyes, when I get in.
Laying down the shelves are approx 57cm wide. Probably enough for a single stack of WD per shelf? But, I’m inherently nervous about stacking magazines like that on glass shelves. Probably overly nervous, but I’m one to avoid the ol’ smashysmashy!

I think it was mentioned upthread, but I was just in one yesterday, so it’s fresh in my mind.
Check around for second hand furniture shops. You will find all sorts of curio and china cabinets. There is one near me (well, the branch location is near me, main store is like 30 min away) that is a front for Habitat for Humanity. They take donations of furniture/home-goods and some the use to furnish new houses for those in need, and some (they get more donations then houses to fill) they sell at deep discounts to help fund their project.
Some are a little worn around the edges, but that’s the risk of second hand stuff. But all are significantly cheeper then new stuff. Saw one yesterday that was probably $3-400 new, marked down to $60.
