After a recent game, my opponent questioned weather or not i could utilize the rerolls from "Lay Low The Tyrant" during an overwatch. I dont see why not since im technically selecting the unit to overwatch which makes him shoot. this is during their movement phase when I chose to use the strategem.

Can anyone shed some light on this for us?

OUT-OF-PHASE RULES
Some rules allow a model or unit to move, shoot, charge or fight
outside of the normal turn sequence. For example, the Fire
Overwatch Stratagem enables a unit to shoot in the opponent’s turn
as if it were your Shooting phase. When using out-of-phase rules to
perform an action as if it were one of your phases, you cannot use
any other rules that are normally triggered in that phase.

Example: In your opponent’s Movement phase, you use the Fire
Overwatch Stratagem to enable a Whirlwind from your army to shoot
as if it were your Shooting phase. The Whirlwind has the Pinning
Bombardment ability, which is used ‘In your Shooting phase, after
this model has shot’. Because Fire Overwatch is an out-of-phase
rule, it only allows the Whirlwind to perform the specified action (in
this case, shooting as if it were your Shooting phase) and does not
trigger any other rules that would normally be used in your Shooting
phase. This means the Whirlwind’s Pinning Bombardment ability
has no effect while resolving these attacks, and you could not use
any other Stratagems that are used in your Shooting phase to affect
those attacks.

I don't recognize "Lay Low the Tyrant," but the general rule is in the Rules Compendium - Overwatch doesn't trigger or allow you to use anything other than the weapon profile. So your opponent is probably right, unless "Lay Low the Tyrant" has some very specific wording.

When asking a question about a rule, it helps to quote the rule or at least tell where it is located in the rules. In this case, the wording of the rule is extremely important as to whether it can be utilized during Overwatch. However, not knowing either the wording or location of the rule, I can't help you.

Note that the analysis above is not the generally agreed upon interpretation of the Out-Of-Phase rule. If Lay Low the Tyrant doesn't state "in the Shooting phase" and rather states "each time the unit is selected to shoot" then it is perfectly legal to use during Overwatch.

ok. ty for the info. here is how lay low the tyrant is worded: Each time this model is selected to shoot or fight, re-roll a Hit Roll of 1 and re-roll a wound roll of 1.

overwatch is worded,

WHEN: your opponents movement or charge phase, just after an enemy unit is set up or when an enemy unit starts or ends a normal, advance, fallback, or charge move.

TARGET: one unit from your army that is within 24" of that enemy unit and that would be eligible to shoot if you were in your shooting phase.

EFFECT: your unit can shoot that enemy as if it was your shooting phase.

RESTRICTIONS until the end of the phase, each time a model in our unti makes a ranged attack, an unmodified Hit roll of 6 is required to score a hit, irrepsective of the attacking weaopn's ballistic skill or any modifiers. you can only use this strategem once per turn.

What is “Lay Low The Tyrant”?

What army?
Is it an Ability?
A Stratagem?

This info is key and it’s missing from the question. Making people search makes it harder to get and answer.

Looks like you’re asking about Imperial Knights? At a glance, if it’s an Ability you would getting Overwatch.

my apologies.
i am playing imperial knights and he was playing blood angels.

lay low the tyrant is one of two of their "code chivalric" rules. that is what i established as my oath.

the army rules code chivalric reads as follows:

If your Army Faction is Imperial Knights, at the
end of the Read Mission Objectives step, you must
select one of the Oaths below to be active for your
army. Models from your army with this ability gain the
associated Oath ability, and you gain the associated
Deed to complete.

If, at the start of any of your Command phases,
your selected Oath’s Deed is completed, your army
becomes Honoured for the rest of the battle and
you gain 3CP (you can only gain CP in this way once
per battle).

LAY LOW THE TYRANT
■ Oath Ability: Each time this model is selected to
shoot or fight, re-roll a Hit roll of 1 and re-roll a
Wound roll of 1.
■ Deed: This deed is completed if the enemy
Warlord is destroyed.
RECLAIM THE REALM
■ Oath Ability: Add 1" to this model’s Move
characteristic and add 1 to Advance and Charge rolls
made for this model.
■ Deed: This deed is completed if you control one
or more objective markers in your opponent’s
deployment zone.

I selected "Lay Low the Tryant" as my code.

Since LLTT actives when a model is selected to shoot or fire, meaning that it is keyed off the action of shooting instead of the shooting phase, it is applied when a model fires overwatch.

I agree. Firing based on Overwatch qualifies for "each time this model is selected to shoot". Lay Low the Tyrant is not a phase based ability.

I will take this moment to note that Balance Dataslate Autumn 2023 has place a restriction on Overwatch preventing its use for Titanic units.
