After seeing the many threads in different forums regarding compositions scores, force org charts, etc., I wanted to see whether people thought it might be possible to take the existing codexes in 40k, and re-organize the army list entries into Common, Special, Rare, like in WFB (similar to how they identified each codex entry into Infantry, Jump Infantry, Beasts, etc. in the BGB

Ideally, this would be without needing to change any points values, and would still work across all codexes.

So, is this possible?

As an example:  Marines
Common: Tactical, Scout, Assault, Devastator
Special: Predator, Whirlwind, Landspeeder, Biker, Scout Biker, Attack Bike, Techmarine
Rare: Land Raider (and Variants), Terminators

Caveat:  This discussion is about the possibility of doing this, not how it would be done (that would be another thread in another forum).  Further, if you don't have something constructive to say, don't say it.  While I appreciate feedback, especially if its the 'that's a dumb idea' kind, only give me that feedback in a constructive manner

This would only work if all troop choices were based on some kind of even system instead of the random qualities they have now.

I think it's possible, but you might want to move certain units around. Here's what I was thinking of as far as the SM list:

Lords: Master, Epistolary, Master of Sanctity

Heroes: Captain, Codicier, Reclusiarch, Techmarine

core: Tactical, Scout, Assault*, Devastator*, Rhino**, Razorback**, Drop Pod**, Bikes, Scout Bikes

Special: Predator, Whirlwind, Land Speeder, Attack Bikes, Vindicator, Veterans, Dreadnought

Rare: Land Raider, Land Raider Crusader, Terminators, Assault Terminators

* = Does not count towards minimum
** = Does not count towards minimum, must be assigned to a squad that can use transports. No more than one transport may be assigned to such a unit.

Gives some flexibility in lists, and a rework of the trait system could allow several different types of lists (for example a trait that allows terminators as core for deathwing)

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Snoogums, I think you're probably right ultimately.  Fantasy works because its based on the 'human' statline and points.

Nobody.  That's along the line of what I was thinking, and if there may be some interest by people in pursuing this line, then I'll be asking for input in another thread to actually try to work it
