Maybe a set of arms in various positions and a set of hands of various types that could slot into the arms using a peg and hole system.
As for types of hands (make both right and left-handed versions):
holding a 1" or longer rod (that could be trimmed to an appropriate height to add an axe head, mace, shovel, banner, etc.)
holding a steering wheel
holding a cigar
holding a bottle/can of beer
clenched fist
open hand
holding a pistol grip
'flipping the bird'
Doing two-handed items are a little trickier because torsos are often different widths from company to company, and sometimes within the same company.
That said, you could have the following:
weaver stance pistol grip
crossed arms
holding a 2" or longer rod

As above most I agree with but I would also like to see the doubled hands on hip arm set, these are great for HQ figures.
I would also like to see an arm wiping sweat from his head so to speak also saluting, maybe an arm to keep the sun from there eyes.
A set I would like to see would be a working arm set, arms holding tools in working positions this would be fantastic.
Maybe some carrying style arms so you could add objects, arms holding books in poses to look like they are holding an open book.
I like the folded arm idea a lot

I hate to be the guy that posts something about a competitor on your page, but Victoria Lamb has an excellent set of alternate arms, though obviously for her Victorian line. I think, however, it's a great jumping off point in terms of what should be included in a set of non combat arms.

Hey Mad Robot !
Hands would be useful , they are super tough to sculpt or convert for most of us !
Those "Not - Aliens " infantry parts are great , thinking of just getting some for the hell of it !
I'd love to see some "Not- Gears of War " styled parts , any chance of a torso and possibly legs ?
I ordered Devgru heads , they are AWESOME on Anvil Industries Black Ops teams.

More great ideas Steve, I look forward to seeing how you incorporate the different sets and the hands down the track will be very useful for a lot of different conversions. you really have a great handle on what 'we' want in the hobby world and are doing an exceptional job of getting it to us! thank you so much!

Hands sets would be of great use, I remember having a set of Verlindan ( I think that was their name) hands they were great for conversions, if you cant find an arm to suit the job you wanted you sculpt the general shape onto a wire frame and add the hand.

Great stuff. Honestly, though, I'm waiting for you to finish out the Colonial Defense set with some arms and legs that work well with the heads and torsos you've made. I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way, as putting those torsos on Cadians with their giant shoulder pads and silly long tops would be a crime.

I'm beginning to think that those would be perfect for Eisenkern, both size- and style-wise. Fallschirmjager anyone?

Guildsman has the idea. These are more intended to aid troopers jumping/dropping from an altitude. More designed to aid in landing than in taking off, hence the smaller size.

First up is a preview of our next release...
Fatigue arms, they will be available Friday.
Legs will come next and I will be following up very quickly with CDF arms & legs. Then we will be focusing more on specific regiment themes; greatcoats, winter troops, jungle troops, etc. I also hope to have a squad deal in the store where you will be able to mix and match any parts we sell to make your own squad. More details to on that coming soon.
Lastly, here is a preview of some new weapons we have coming out over the next month or so...
Thanks!

Received my Mad Robot components on Saturday, just a few days after ordering. I'm very pleased with the casting- crisp, no mold lines to speak of, and no bubbles. I've tried almost all the 'third party' resin casters and I've always put MaxMini at the top for quality. So far, Mad Robot is right up there on the top level with them. I love the consistency of the resin as well.
Anyway, here's a pic of Mad Robot bits on an Eisenkern body. I'm not intending to use these heads on this figure, but tossed them on so you guys can see scale.
The weapons are wider/thicker and will need some simple modifying to fit really well- in this case they're just sitting on with blue- tac. I removed the stocks. The Eisenkern weapons are pretty thin, and on some poses the stock is only partially molded so that it can fit the arm, so it is no wonder that the Mad Robot guns would not be a precise fit. I personally think they'll work just fine by trimming the side facing the body a bit so it fits flush and centers the grip under the gun. The shoulder pads haven't been put on yet and will serve to 'bulk up' the body visually.
The faces are great, just the right clarity and detail IMO.
I think the Mad Robot stuff will fit 40K scale perfectly. So far, so good Keep it up Mad Robot!
23979
Post by: frozenwastes
So it looks like the weapons will be about the perfect size for use on 40mm jump infantry/power suits I plan on converting up. They look pretty good on the Eisenkern stuff with your modifications, if a little bulking and big.

The ANZAC heads are nice and characterful, but the hats themselves are wrong for either Australian or New Zealander hats. They would be better (as in, less likely to encourage pedants to mention that they aren't quite right ) billed just as 'slouch hat heads' rather than as ANZACs.

Post by: insaniak
Unless the picture is grossly misleading, they look to have the standard Akubra peaked front and flat top. The Australian slouch hat has an indent running from front to back along the crest. The modern version is also squeezed in at the sides, but in WWI that was either not standard or just not always done right
The New Zealand version was a 'lemon squeezer' style similar to the Canadian Mountie hat.

Your first set has three eye injuries (with nice variations), and that's along the lines of what I mean - general variety so we can make groups of injured soldiers (or scatter them throughout a whole army) without repeating heads. So, suggestions for a second set:
- bandaged nose, with strap around head
- bandaged cheek, perhaps with a strap looping between the eyes and around the head
- both eyes bandaged
- whole head bandaged, with just eyes and mouth peeping out (also perfect for Egyptian mummies )
- someone looking asleep/unconscious/dead beneath their bandages? (mostly a question of facial expression)
Other facial expressions for variety, e.g. another shouting/screaming, one grinning/grimacing, one looking afraid?
And keep up the variety of face shape, e.g. someone with a very round head, someone with a pointy chin etc

Very promising. Could I mention one thing please. I think it would be wise to make a set with helmets separately from the set in ushankas - that winter hads (like summer and winter sets ). The guy most to the right on your image is wearing a summer hat/cap called pilotka. These were worn by soldiers in summer, not in winter as it is often represented on western forums. Pilotka was originally worn by pilots when not flying and made its way into regular infantry. It is true however, that same type of hats/caps where worn by Germans, because they had some shortage of winter gear in first years when fighting Soviets.
But to be honest, I was waiting for more than 15 years for someone who will release this kind of conversion bits. Hope you will keep them coming.
Cheers,
Alexander from Russia

I sent an order in for more beret heads and one set each of the bandaged heads and tanker heads. With the Imperial Guard Codex rumored to be coming early in 2014, it is finally time to get working on my army again.
I find that my infantry squads tend to get jumbled and then I lose track of which model belongs to which squad. So the beret heads with different colors for each veteran squad should resolve my problem.
Thanks Steve!

Post by: mad robot
OK, here's the breakdown of what a Roll Call is. The first one will be for the Kurgan Winter Guard. It will launch Friday, October 4th. There will be renders of everything next week when it launches.
-Steve
What is a Roll Call?
Simply, it's a pre-order system. We try and fund as much of a new project as possible through pre-orders in order to offset the costs of digitally printing the master figures. A Roll Call lasts up to 30 days, if everything gets funded quickly then it is ended early so production can begin.
Is this like Kickstarter®?
Sort of...once we hit our initial pre-order goal, we will use additional pre-orders to fund extra parts for that particular line. These can be things like an alternate head set, a second weapon design, a special character, etc.
What if I want some extra stuff that may get funded, can I pre-order that?
Yes, once new add-ons get funded, we'll add a pre-order for them and those extra items will remain on pre-order until the Roll Call ends.
Do you have any physical prototypes to display?
No, just renders. By now, anyone can look at what we sell and see the kind of quality and detail we can deliver with digital sculpting and printing. Below is just one example of how close the final product matches up against a render.
Are there perks?
The only perk we offer is a reduced price on pre-orders, as compared to the regular retail price. There are no freebies, no stretch goals. Anything that gets funded beyond the initial squad or offering will be available for pre-order for the remainder of the Roll Call.
Why no freebies?
Because this is a small(one guy) company and we can't afford to give anything away for free.
So, what do I get out of it?
You get a reduced price and the chance to get your stuff before others do. You also get the heart warming experience of throwing your support behind a line of minis that otherwise would take up to 6 months to get to market.
How long will it take to get my stuff?
Each round of pre-orders will have an associated delivery window. This will allow us to manage the flow of product to customers. Since we do all the casting ourselves, we can be very quick and give each round of pre-orders our fullest attention.
What material are your minis made of?
Resin.
How can I get more information?
You can always find us on our favorite forums or you can drop us an email: projects@madrobotminiatures.com
If you're a one-man company, why do you always say “we” when talking about Mad Robot?
Well, I like to think it represents a desire to look towards a future where we will have lots of employees and a nice, big production facility. Others who know me would probably say it's because I'm slightly out of my mind...

Crowdsourcing is not distribution.
He is referencing th3 cut sites like Kick starter and Amazon payments take.
By doing preorders he is eliminating them from the process.

“Fear of death? We are Kurgan; we are born into darkness; we live in burial mounds. The very blood that courses through our veins is as cold as the ice that covers our planet. Death? We are Kurgan...death is our way of life!” - General Ivan Druganov, prior to the Seven Hells Campaign
Kurgan is a snow-covered ice world, its inhabitants have adapted by tunneling under the surface to be closer to the warmth of the planet's core. The massive underground cities are referred to as Barrows, an unwitting yet morbid analogy that would seem to demonstrate the harsh environment the planet offers. The Barrow system has evolved much like the city-state of antiquity, with each city representing a force unto itself. The Kurgan society is ruled by an representative council and each Barrow has developed an aristocratic caste that strive to ensure their Barrow's way of life is given voice. The seat of the underground world lies in Barrow-Kurgan, also known as Kurgangrad, where the ruling council oversees the safety and well being of the planet.
Although the majority of it's surface is covered by snow and ice, it does have a temperate zone where some above-ground cities do exist. Situated amongst the vast stretches of tundra, these surface communities live a life that is somewhat removed from the political intrigue of the Barrows. These surface dwellers have a wild, almost nomadic nature about them but they nevertheless maintain a well organized system of society and planetary defense. They see themselves and the Barrow dwellers as complimentary sides of the same coin. Their cultural and political center lies in what many call the “Jewel of Kurgan”..the city of Syberia.
“Now men, from this death to the next, follow me and unleash the fury of the Kurgan host. Follow me over this wall and show the enemy what it is they have feared all their lives...FROM THIS DEATH TO THE NEXT!” - Captain Aleksandr, leading the final push to victory in the battle for Klyton-Banor

@LDD: I want to keep control of how many total pre-orders I take so I can get them out in a reasonable amount of time. This may result in the Roll Call being closed before the end of the month. Even though pre-orders may be shut off early, once you get on the list, I can take additional support from you right up until the figures ship.
Since I'm in charge of everything, I can be very flexible and I'll make sure you get taken care of

This is often true of 3d renders, but will look more proportional when you actually see the models - not specific to this project.

The squatness looks like a combination of the camera angle and length of the coat. Lots of cameras have a bit of a fish eye distortion when taking close up pics of minis, it has to do with the camera's macro function.
When viewed straight on like the last pic it looks fine. Having bought some of Steve's parts in the past I know that he takes great pains to make sure all the parts match up right and that everything is in proper scale.

Actually, I'm not as keen on that last set. It's possibly just that the hats are sitting a fraction too low, but the massive chins, and the eyes too far up the face, make them look a little peculiar. Don't get me wrong, the sculpting is great, and the character in those faces is awesome... they just need a little more skull.

I suspect you'll find that's another of the optical illusions renders do,
like the people saying the gun was too big earlier on, then changing their minds when they saw a comparison between the real cast item and the GW equivalent (which turned out to be even larger)

Thanks for the feedback all!
Some facial features are overdone on purpose due to the scale. I have a certain approach about how to do it and I can understand that not everyone will dig it. No worries whatsoever
14765
Post by: paulson games
Is that a reference to needing an alteration on the sculpt? or rather a joke at GW where everything needs piles of skulls for decor?
(I'm assuming that it's a GW joke as I'm not sure what "more skull" would mean in terms of sculpting).
99
Post by: insaniak
No, it was meaning that their heads are quite bottom heavy. The eyes are too far up the face, leaving them with a tiny brain pan.

Do you have to use a creator's eye and experience to build some exaggeration into a design so that the final product ends as "normal"?
45264
Post by: mad robot
alphaecho wrote:Do you have to use a creator's eye and experience to build some exaggeration into a design so that the final product ends as "normal"?
It takes trial and error to get it looking the way you want, that's for sure.
28415
Post by: lone dirty dog
I kind of thought this myself when I first saw the renders of the first head set Steve did, but when they get printed they become softer featured meaning the over exaggeration of detail is required in the first place.
But I can pretty much assure you once you see the hard copy you will be surprised how much less pronounced they are.
25313
Post by: vostok
Nice additions Steve.
About face size, well, we should wait for final prototypes or versions and then we could decide if they are big, small or else.
Recently someone showed compatibility between Mad Robot minis, Victoria minis, GW ones and maxmini miniatures. And I have to say that compatibility is at least very good if not better than that.
So, fellow guardsmen fans (and lunatics (=means ever bigger fans here) as I am) thanks to Steve we have new neoRussians ready for the new codex and even more.
Cheers,

ROLL CALL WRAP UP: A huge thank you to all who supported this first Roll Call from Mad Robot. I am excited by what the future may hold for additional Roll Calls, it will be a very fun year in 2014!
We managed to fund the basic squad; including 2 head sets, a torso set, a leg set, an arm set, a new rifle, and supplemental parts like officer arms and a set of pouches. We also funded a 5 additional head sets, 2 additional rifles, and a set of kneeling legs.
All the parts have been sent to printing and I should have the first part of them arriving in the next week or so. I'll post pictures here as soon as I get them and I will begin making molds for production ASAP. I am hopeful that the first sets will begin shipping before the end of November.
If you have any questions at all about this process or any concerns, please send me an email.

I mentioned a few pages back I felt the weapons were significantly oversize. I believe the general idea was that they're about the same scale as the plastic weapons from everyone's favourite company.
Love the mini overall, I'll be finding a different rifle scaled a bit more traditionally.

The Kurgan rifle's main body is about 1mm shorter, top to bottom, and the overall rifle is about 15% thinner.

Well, GW weapons have always been pretty ridiculously huge, and the Cadian plastics are on the extreme end of heroic scale.

Agreed, I think they should be compared to some more reasonably proportioned heroic guns such as the ones made by FW or Victoria miniatures to see how well proportioned they are.
28415
Post by: lone dirty dog
Personally I think if you shorten the mag slightly ( which easily could be converted with a cut and dab of glue ) it would reduce the look some.
25313
Post by: vostok
Well, regarding GW weapons. They are big, but the figures are disproportional to (large heads and hands, etc.) just because it is Heroic scale and it is a matter of every people taste.
More proportional dimensions are more eye pleasing. However, 1 or 0,5 mm can do a lot here.
I wonder how would these look with Chenkov guns. Will have to wait for pictures :-)
14765
Post by: paulson games
I think Tau pulse rifles are even more distorted in scale than Cadian lasguns. The pulse rifles are longer then the Tau are tall and it's even further highlighted by the fact that fire warriors have a much smaller stature, on top of that they are in rather hunched poses. (where cadians are mostly upright)
I think the AK's work fine on the Kurgans as it all fits in with the heroic scale. I think the overall dimensions of the AK looks better than the las gun, it's a bit thinner in the body and that helps offset the length where the las rifle looks very bulky and weighty which gives it a slighty stubby look despite being really long in comparison to the miniature.
45264
Post by: mad robot
Wow, and good morning to you all
In the end, I don't really care how my parts scale up to FW, Victoria's models, or anyone else for that matter.
Mad Robot parts are intended for use primarily with other Mad Robot parts and figures. If folks want to use them on something else that is their prerogative. The great thing about the hobby we are working with here is that you are only limited by your imagination. If people want to get hung up on the proportions of a rifle? Oh well, such is life.
Thanks for all the input Some good Mad Robot news coming in a few days!
-Steve

Post by: prowla
I'm thinking it's the large barrel on the AK that's making it look huge. Put a mini barrel on it (+ possibly shorten the clip a bit) and suddenly it looks a lot more realistic.
It's really two different things to have an imaginary lasgun and an AK side to side - enlarging it to same size doesn't work perfectly, you have to fiddle with the individual components.

I wouldn' t make a whole army of them, Damo, but I'd certainly put together a squad of them as part of my crusade army! (p137, 40k Compendium (Red book), I can't find the other old, RT-era references). Assault squad armed with Katanas? I wonder if I have enough loose Katanas from the old Warzone stuff?
All of these new parts look outstanding, Steve! Love the heads and the AKs especially.

@Mad Robot - I'm going to take your challenge and get my FLGS to set up an account. I recently got back in to 40k (I know... I know) and have been looking to get some "counts as" troops for Kroot (just don't like the minis) so I've been trying to find some good minis to use as Guevesa'la.
Your option to build your own squad is definitely a better option than those offered by other "bits" makers. In addition your quality seems to be very very good.
My only "nit" is that the mini posted above with the beret, molle torso and legs looks somewhat out of proportion. The head looks overly large for the torso... or the Torso may be small for the head and legs.
I know that this may be a bit much of a request, but could you post a pic of that same torso with the Boonie hat head on the same legs? I was looking at getting a squad with Boonie hat, Molle torso along with fatigue legs and arms. Being able to see it before I buy it would go a long way towards making a decision to buy it.
Thanks

It's an optical illusion caused by the texture change on the mollie vest. With the two different bandings on the vest it tricks the eye into seeing the belt level as being higher than what it is, causing the torso to look short. Also the putty around the neck area causes a appearance of not having a neck which causes the head to look fatter and bigger then it is.
Steve uses the same 3d model as a base for all his stuff so the parts are all sized the same, but due to some of the surface details or how they photograph they look like the proportions are different, but the actual pieces all measure the same. Taking accurate up close photos of minis is tough as most cameras have a slightly distorted fish eye effect when they are being used in Macro mode.

Thank you for answering my request, that is exactly what I was going for. Very lightly armored humans.
@Paulson Games: Thanks for that tidbit of info.
I'll be ordering that squad. :-)

BREAKING NEWS
Mad Robot Miniatures is happy to announce that we are taking over the sale and production of Paulson Games' catalog of Mecha Parts and Conversion Bits.
It will take us a week or two to get molds organized and working. We will start to list items from the Paulson catalog as they become available.
We wish Jon all best and look forward to the fantastic work he does in the future on his newest project Mecha Front. We also take this opportunity to welcome those who are coming to us for the first time, looking for quality Mecha Parts. My hope is that we can live up to the high standards set by Paulson Games and we look forward to providing you with awesome parts (and maybe a few new ones as well).

I just got my first Mad Robot order today (literally just opened it).
First off let me say.. Steve it's 4tonmantis from TGN..
I had commented on the feet on the greatcoats.. and brother, in person they are fine. They could be smaller but they don't look as big as the photos make them out to be.
Second, these are probably the most finely detailed models I've seen. Things are realistically scaled like wrinkles and shoelaces (shoe laces people!). The barrels don't need to be drilled, there are no obvious mold lines (a few fine ones), minimal flash that is really minor. It's just a scad of beautiful models.
I'm going to gush for a bit.. so excuse the mess..
The scale on the weapons is perfect. I've long hated how comically HUGE most of the weapons for GW are and while the general profile is similar, the thickness of the weapons is far more realistic.
You've made a believer and earned a repeat customer Steve, thanks a million
EDIT:
Arg.. I bought them to be used alongside Dreamforge's Eisenkern.. which are taller. That's not MR's fault obviously.. as they are almost identical in size to IG and Eisenkern are taller than Space Marines.. I'll just have to whip up some green stuff spacers to bring them up to height ;P

Absolutely will do. I'm still running down some of the parts I need for the conversions so it might be a while. I'll add (now that I have done a tiny bit of work) that the resin is great to work with. Whatever you're using, it's a great formula. I should probably go leave some reviews on your site while I'm still thinking about it
EDIT: My god man, no review option!!! For shame!

So I just got home from work 20 minutes ago and awaiting for me was my beloved balaclava heads,
Just a little review here: These heads are flawless, I looked for imperfections and couldn't find a single one, not even a mold line.
I don't know what kind of resin fairies Steve has locked up in his workspace, but they're doing there job and then some.
I ordered these for fun, and because once I saw them (like almost everyone else I see ) My thoughts immediately went to my favourite Merc with a Mouth: Deadpool.
My girlfriend and I haven't had as much time for gaming lately as we'd like so I decided I'd throw together a Deadpool killteam comprised of Sternguard for quick games, and here is the results. I'll post more pics once I paint them this week
(Also forgive the few mold lines I gotta clean up still, and drilling out the multi-melta)
I spoiled the pics because I didn't wanna clutter up the thread

I plan to get some Balaclava heads as well among other goodies, probably around the new IG release.
@Madrobot: Another suggestion head variant is the Tau guevesa, there isn't really a market for them yet; the conversions people do looks like cadian head with lenses and comm with the imperial symbol scratched off, the back area of the helmet is like the tau helmet flute it out, maybe a tau antenna on the side of the helm as well.

Prior to the news of MR taking over the Paulson bits, I had ordered a "last hurrah" order of those offerings. I've now got most of that stuff and can tell you, it's quality resin people. If you're not familiar, it's scaled well for Tau Crisis Suits in addition to 54mm mecha.
Steve, on the bits, are you going to be selling old stock or pouring with the resin you normally use? His feels like smooth on with a gray additive while yours has a feel closer to FW resin. This could be in my head and you guys are pouring the same stuff but I like the feel and workability of yours just a bit better.

We use the same resin. For some of these I'm using existing molds and making new stock, on everything else I'm poring new molds. That's the reason for the staggered releases.

Holy crap! Some actual models for Guevesa?! That'd be a hot item. So would Marker Light bits for drones or Fire Warrior Shas'ui. It's like $10 for those bits on some websites
