Looking good with those BF explorers. The little glows on the zoat stand out nicely amidst the rest of the warm colours.

Thanks sherrypie, the Escalation minis are really cool. Yeah, I like how the glow contrast her skin tone so well.
Olthannon wrote:Wow that's quite the necron horde. Looking forward to your progress, good luck!

Yeah, I seem to be falling in to the batch painting on them too

A bit more painting was had tonight (penultimate painting with F1 on the computer of the year) and instead of going back to finish off the void panthers or even finish my Elves I cracked on with the Necrons!

It took a little while to get the mix of contrast:medium right, so the scarabs and a couple of the warriors are a bit on the dark side compared to the originals. I can live with that, and made some good progress getting the scarabs, warriors, deathmarks, immortals and Lychguard contrasted up. I’m looking forward to seeing the murder buckets in their spooky green next time out.

In other hobby news, I’ve finally rearranged my desk, so I now have a permanent hobby set up and permanent work set up. Hopefully that will mean more quick sessions of painting.

Thanks for looking!

Nice little update, keep cracking on.

I've had zero motivation recently, I'm struggling to "batch"paint two models!

Thanks Olthannon, I think most of us feel the motivation pain from time to time. Hopefully you can get past the troublesome twosome.

I’m hoping to get some more progress on the Necrons tonight, but I’m trying to figure out what to do on the Doom Sycthe. Should I paint the central bit black and the arms green, or vice versa, or keep it green all over with just the weapons and trim in black? Any quick fire ideas welcome too!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I did get a bit of painting in tonight and got the green done on all of the Necrons;

As can be seen i went for green all over. I’m still not sold and the contrast looks quite blotchy over such large flat surfaces. I might need to redo at least some of it, I’ll see how it dries and then decide what to do. Maybe through the airbrush it will work better, but that would rely on me getting the hang of that!

Opportunity to paint will be slim for a while as I’m away with work next week and we have guests the next 2 weekends. I might take the panthers on tour and see if I manage to get anything done on them.

Thanks for looking

I’ve been plodding away with the Necrons, the other night I finished the black;

I also took some closer pics to show how they look individually;
Warriors

Deathmark and Immortal

Lychguard and Cryptothrall

Skorpekh Destroyers

Plasmancer and Royal Warden

Plasmancer again and Plasmacyte

Canoptek Reanimator & Overlords

And finally the Doom Scythe

I’m thinking the scythe is a little boring right now but I’m hoping some glow will bring it to life.

Thanks for looking

Thanks syro, it really does take a while, each stage takes a good few hours at my pace. I do feel it’s more efficient than painting in smaller groups though.
Olthannon wrote:The Necrons are really coming together. I'm sure the Doom Scythe will look awesome when it's done.

Thanks Olthannon. On the doom scythe I’m still wondering if I’d have been better doing a part of it black, but knowing me I’ll stick with it now
Theophony wrote:That Blued steel look is fantastic

Thanks Theo, John Prins was the recipe originator from one of his Christmas armies.

Sadly I’ve not made any progress on anything hobby related, despite finishing work early this year. Hopefully you’ve all had a good Christmas holiday and Santork got you something nice. I got a couple of paints from my kids, which I’ll be putting to good use soon hopefully! As I’m unlikely to do any painting I’ve the next couple of days I’ll be posting a year in review shortly, which will be quite a bit to get through this year!

Thanks for the encouragement through the year!

As promised here’s my year in Review

January
Started the year with a bang, getting the BSF Plague Marines and a bunch of BSF terrain done

February
Keeping up the rapid progress I finished a 5 man Assault Squad for my Void Panthers

Then Aradia Madellan from Blackstone Fortress Escalation

March
I then took a detour from GW and painted up the minis from Bill & Ted’s Riff In Time game using mainly the new Speed Paints from Army Painter

Neyam Shai Murad was the last of the Blackstone Fortress Escalation minis and one of my favourites of the year

I then elected to do a massive batch of High Elves, but I snook in a Blackstone Fortress themed dice tower first

April
Nothing finished, a few Panthers and Necrons built and the slog of the Elves carried on
May
The Archers were the first Elves to be finished

And the High Elves got a little display board

June
A quiet month mainly spent building Necrons
July
Not much direct hobby but I build some storage for my miniatures stuff and 3d Printer

August
I finally finished the High Elf Spearmen having sourced a few extra shields

These guys got a touch up too

September
The Void Panthers 2nd Tactical squad was finished, I really like how the Space Marine Heroes Sergeant conversion turned out.

I also built pretty much all of the remaining Void Panthers having splashed out on a bunch of Terminators, HQ selection and a Rhino
October
The Archivist Zoat was my penultimate Blackstone Fortress project (those Guardian drones will be a 2023 thing

The Escalation explorers got this proper bases too;

November
I did a bit of work on some Void Panther Assault Marines, but got distracted with some Necrons
December
Not much beyond a bit of progress on the Necrons thanks to DIY, family visits and pestilence

Overall I’m pleased with the quantity and quality of my outputs. The former was certainly helped by the simplicity of the Blackstone Fortress terrain, but it looks great too. I also think some of my best work to date was with Neyam and the Zoat.

As far as goals for 2023 go, I’d like to get my High Elves, Blackstone Fortress minis and Necrons finished. The Elves only have the Tiranoc Chariot to go, so should be quite fun. The Blackstone Fortress stuff only needs the Guardian Drones to complete the collection, which if I follow the scheme I used on the Spindle Drones won’t take long at all. After the current batch is done I’ll only have the Tomb Blades (I forgot about them ) to do for the Necrons. I’ll obviously also continue with my Void Panthers, maybe even doing some work on the display board too. As for other projects, it’d be nice to do some Blood Angels, start on my Empire Army or Indomitus Dark Angels… so plenty to be getting on with. If I can hit triple digits of finished minis again I’d be very happy too!

That’s probably it from me for 2022. Hope you all have a good New Year and 2023 brings you plenty of hobby success!

Yeah, 133 is a good number, I think it would see me keeping ahead of purchases for the year I think… checking eBay and emails I think I only bought 18 minis last year, so made a sizeable dent in the pile of shame.

DoctorDanny wrote:Can we get an update on the necrons?

Sure thing, coming right up!

2023 has started very slowly on the hobby front. Part of that has been me being busy at work and not wanting to sit and paint. The main reason though I that whilst re-insulating and boarding our loft storage space I aggravated a sore elbow, which also makes my forearm sore, particularly when typing on my phone and also painting. As a result I’ve not been making fast progress. Looking back at pics I hadn’t shown the start of the glow on the Necrons;

Scarabs

Warriors

Deathmark and Immortal

Lychguard

Cryptothrall and Plasmacyte

Plasmancer and Royal Warden

Canoptek Reanimator

Despite my arm, I did do a bit of painting tonight, getting the glow started on this lot;

Overlords

Skorpekh Destroyers

And the Skorpekh Lord

Next will be the Croissant before starting the second stage of the glow

Thanks for looking

I’ve just realised that I forgot to mention that I’m underway on extending my Blackstone Fortress project after I remembered there were a few White Dwarf articles. As a result I’ve splurged and bought all the minis needed for them;
Solo Characters
Harlequin Solitaire
Eversor Assassin
Deathwatch Watch Master
Retinue Characters
Gren ’Knuckles’ Broggan, Ogryn Bodyguard
Dorg ‘The Wall’ Broggan, Bullgryn Sentry
Penitent 707, Arco-flagellant
Skarburn Zapdakka, Flash Git
Enemies
Astroth Mythrak, Master of Possession
2 x Greater Possessed

I managed to get a good deal on the Watch Master who also came with a squad of Intercessors (they’ll eventually join my Indomitus Primaris force). For the Broggan twins and Skarburn I ended up just buying retail boxes, so have a few extra minis to build too! At some point they’ll all join the Blackstone Fortress gang. The Master of Possession and Greater Possessed were a bit steep, but in for a penny in for a pound!

Thanks not online, I’m liking it now it’s getting its glow on, particularly the black and glowy filling

Got started on the second stage of glows, using heavily thinned Gauss Blaster Green as a wash to get the recesses. I got the wash on the Scarabs, Warriors, Deathmarks, Immortals and I made a start on the Lychguard. The shields took the wash particularly well I think, with the symbols on the front looking cool.

Coming along well!

Thanks Gwyn, with a large batch like this it feels like it’s taking ages, but little by little they get closer to completion

Tonight was another little step closer, getting the Lychguard done (nearly forgot 1 but spotted him later on), same for the;

Cryptothralls, plasmacyte,

Plasmancer, Royal Warden,

Canoptek Reanimator, Overlord,

Indomitus Overlord, Skorpekh Lord

and Deatroyers;

I also made a start on the Doom Scythe

I had to stop mid 1/5 of the step through the croissant as I overloaded the vents, so had to position if so they dried at the bottom. On the plus side the photo show the different that the Gauss Blaster wash does for the glow effect.

Thanks for looking

A good session was had tonight, I think I’ve pretty much got the minis themselves done. Though I did spot a few orbs and random base scarabs that I might go back and touch up. One of the big slogs and huge consumer of paints is the base coat on sanded bases, but I smashed it out in a single sitting whilst vaguely watching a few painting videos and a formula e race on YouTube. Here’s where they stand right now;

It’s especially fast for me Captain!

I’m edging ever closer to the end of this little project. Over the past couple of days the stone bits on the bases got a mid grey applied. Then tonight I slapped on a dawnstone stipple and drybrush followed by Administratum grey. Next will be white to give it a nice cold and frosty look before I redo the scarabs on bases, fix up some missed glowy orbs, paint up the dead marines on the leaders bases (I’m thinking they’re Void Panthers) then lastly throw down some Valhallan Blizzard

Thanks for looking

Thanks Olthannon, glad you like my base plans, as you’ll see they did turn out to be dead Void Panthers. I’ll be sure to take some nice pics when they’re all done, but the OG squad of warriors was pretty hard to photograph with all the reflective surfaces

Last night I powered through a fairly long painting session despite my arm giving me pain. Annoyingly it seems the problem with my arm is exacerbated by painting minis, more than anything else. I went to a physio who gave me some tiny exercises that should be easy but are actually quite painful. Hopefully they’ll do the trick and I’ll be back to full capability soon.

Anyways, enough about my ailments and on to painting progress. I completely ignored my previous post and skipped a few steps to mainly focus on the bases. I started with a drybrush of white to add a frosty look. Next was a subdued version of my Void Panthers on the dead marines; Retributor Gold, Liche Purple, Black & Leadbelcher. Instead of the usual Nuln Oil Wash I went with Agrax to dirty them up. Then I stippled black around any gouges before adding some Blood for the Blood God in the open wounds. The hidden base scarabs got a Leadbelcher coat before the ghostly green wash. The missed orbs on the Skorpekhs got their first glow stage too. All of the bases got at least one spot of Valhallan Blizzard.

As they were finished I threw some black on the rims of a few bases, making 3 Scarab bases my first finished minis of 2023:

The rest aren’t too far off, there’s a few skulls on bases, and the orbs that I missed. There’s also a couple of bits of Kastallan robot on the Canoptek Reanimators base. The cape on Doom Croissant could do with a highlight too.

That’s all for now, Thanks for looking!

Nice work.

Cheers DJ, I’m sad to report but the Panthers ultimate fate is to morph in to my Black Legion. There’ll be a it more loyalist VP painting to come before that happens though!

Last night I managed to sneak in a bit of hobby time as Mrs gobert was out for a work dinner and I managed to smash through the bits I needed to finish off! The missed mini scarabs got the lit glow and orbs, the cape a highlight, the skulls painted, the Kastallan bits highlighted and all of the rims painted black. Here they all are!

I even took some smaller group and individual shots, but they’ll take AGES to edit and upload. For now you’ll have to make do with pics of the Scarabs (again, sorry) and the squad of Warriors:

In this one you can see the Void Panther leg poking out

And it’s heel

I think the glow and black orb combo works pretty well on these

Next are the Warriors

These new warriors have a great shambling horde look

There’s a couple of near duplicate pics extra in the gallery if you want more pics. If not, I’ll be posting the more interesting units over the next few days

As ever, Thanks for looking!

They are tiny and cute aren’t they

As promise here’s another batch of pics, this time the Desthmarks. When I bought the combat patrol box I didn’t really look too closely at the contents and thought l was getting some immortals and Lychguard as I wanted both for Space Marine Adventures. As it turns out I quite like them, the glow on their guns was fun even if they were a PITA to build and it looks like a missed a few cables too!
I like the pool of blood by the Panther helmet in this pic

For those mourning the loss of Void Panthers, the helmet was a cast of the Space Marine Adventures flamer chap. It was terrible apart from on one side with a massive seam, so it got chopped and out here. The others are beyond repair eBay rescues and a space 2nd Ed Bolter hugger

Thanks youwashock, johns technique is really good. I’m not as fast as he is, but it speeds me up loads and looks great!

As promised, I’m back with more. This time it’s the turn of the Immortals. I bought the Combat patrol box predominantly for these guys with using them to play Space Marine Adventures with my daughters. Now they’re all painted, maybe they’ll want to play?

I was looking forward to painting these guys, but head stripes aside I think they’re the weakest link in the colour scheme. I think it’s the gun that the problem, the glowy bits are a bit dull and they are missing black orbs. Still I look forward to Space Marine Adventurers shooting them!

Next up are the stars of the show, the Lychguard. I’m really chuffed how they turned out, the so low on their shields are my favourite bits of the entire army. I also think I managed to get some decent poses on what were fiddly and fairly benignly posed stock minis.

I took a few closer pics too

And there’s a bunch of individual shots in my gallery

This evening I also resumed Void Panther activity. Back in the autumn I started the second half of an Assault Squad. I then got distracted with the Necrons, but now they’re finished I’ll finish the Panthers before moving on to something fresh.

I really enjoy the gold on the panthers now that I’ve got the recipe down and use the reflection of my lamp from the metallic paint to plot out the highlights. That’s all for now, more Necrons to follow

Thanks Gwyn, means a lot form such a necron officianado! Yeah, quite a few of the early poses were really derpy, I was relieved to get them posed nicely
Olthannon wrote:Brilliant work Gobert, the Lychguard are very cool.

Thanks Olthannon, I need to get them facing off against the Void Panthers soon

Carrying on the Necron posts, we’re on to everyone’s favourites; the Murder Buckets! I love their nickname so much I keep having to google “Necron murder buckets” to remind myself that they’re supposed to be called Cryotothralls

I like how they’re looking lovingly at each other in this next one!

And a couple of individuals ones

Thanks theCrowe, it’s a John prins special, and he rarely disappoints with quick and effective colour schemes! And yea the Necrons definitely get the best nicknames

Thanks itsonlyme, I’m glad you like them and welcome to my plog!

A couple of individuals tonight, the Plasmancer and his Plasmacyte. First up the little dude;

For such a small simple mini, he’s actually pretty characterful, almost inquisitive from some angles

Grub like from others

And menacing

All in one little package

Their boss though is very much a withered old man

Not intentional but I like how he ended up with a Void Panthers hand on his base!

I like how the skull on the base is hollowed out on this mini, a neat little detail

I also like all of the scarabs crawling on their bases, adds a nice creepiness to them I think

Thanks for looking!

Aye, it’s been a while TH! Good to see you’re still around. The Zoat and BSF characters were great fun, so much so I’ve spent a load on all of the Annual and White Dwarf characters! I agree, the gloss black orbs finish the look well, I think the black of orbs is my problem with the immortals. Btw, what’s your insta username (the link in your signature block isn’t working :’()

Thanks muette, they’re pretty ghostly aren’t they and yeah with the black orbs I was going for bottomless pit/antimatter kind of vibe, so kinda nightmarish to me at least.
Olthannon wrote:Really fantastic work Gobert. I really like the black for the "metals" it really adds to the cold feel of the models. The detritus on the base of the Reanimator is a nice touch.

Thanks Olthannon, as I was putting them away the other day I think the latest batch have a nicer looo ok their black metals, and it sets off the glow and the green metals nicely. The detritus was fun, adds a bit of variety after the slog of the horde!

I’m back with some more Necron action, this time it’s a trio of Lords; the Indomitus Skorpekh Lord and Overlord, plus the combat patrol box Overlord. So I’m ascending Rank and seniority;

This view gives a good view of the Void Panther I think

Next up is the Indomitus Overlord

And finally the Overlord from the Combat Patrol box

And to prove there’s no hard feelings between the competing Overlords, here’s a nice brotherly pic

Thanks Ezki, the snow just seemed right for them, adding to their coldness but still contrasting.
Not Online!!! wrote:The lords look awesome. The bases look great aswell, what did you use for the snow?

Thanks Not Online, the snow was just a few dollops of Valhallan Blizzard from GW. There’s apparently much cheaper ways to make it, but I went with the easy way!
BalerionTheBlackDread wrote:That looks very cool I love the simple colour scheme nothing too over zealous proves that less is most definately more.

Thanks Balerion, and welcome to my plog. I’m quite a fan of Simple colour schemes, they let the model do the work and unlike my 90s childhood creations they’re not offensive to the eye!

Well, I’m nearly at the end of the Necron showcase, and tonight Matthew I’m going to be a Skorpekh Lord (sorry for the obscure 90s UK TV reference). These guys are pretty cool, but i wish I’d have thrown something a bit more interesting that a lightning claw on the big guys base.

I think took a few individual snaps too. I like this one, he looks mean!

And one with their dad

The Lord really is a big mini! His base has a good weight to it with the Marine and built up dirt too. My next post will likely be the last of my Necrons for a while. I do have 3 tomb blades that I forgot to paint with this bunch and I quite fancy a few more at some point.

Thanks for looking, and I promise once I’ve gotten through these pics I’ll spend some time catching up on everyone else’s Plogs

Thanks youwashock, they’re a mean looking bunch I think.

Finally the time has come to show the last of the finished Necrons, and it’s a tasty croissant shaped snack; the Doom Scythe. It’s easily the biggest miniature I’ve painted (the BSF dice tower is probably bigger but that’s terrain not a mini) and it’s so big it’s hard to photograph and get everything in focus. So as a result I’ve taken quite a few pics:

I like this next one as it shows off the glowing circles on the rim of the craft

And the view from below (i turned up the brightness on the image and the stand partially disappeared!)

Here’s the base

And I quite like this one of the pilot, though I think the reflections mean he’s a bit out of focus

And with that the Necron project is over for now. The Tomb Blades will follow, but I want to finish the High Elf army first. I’ve done a wee bit more on the Assault Marines but haven’t got a snap of them, their metal work is done and I’ve started to block out the purple areas. Probably won’t get much done for a week or more as we have house guests this weekend. I’d like to get them done over the next couple of weeks though, so we’ll see how that goes.

Thanks for looking

They do indeed, swinging low to reap some panthers!

So unfortunately my arm isn’t getting any better, probably doesn’t help that I’ve not kept on with the physio… maybe I’ll be a good boy for the next few weeks? As a result my motivation to paint has been very low. I have however done some building and casting. The casting has seen me get some of the next batch of shoulder pad icons cast for some more Panthers. I think I still have about a dozen pads to do but it’s coming along. I don’t think I’ve done any pads for my terminators. So will have to make some new moulds for them. The building has seen me progress some of the Annual and White Dwarf Blackstone Fortress minis (plus a Nork Deddog I built using a spare Bullgryn). I now have all of the minis I need, and am keen to prime them ready for painting.

Despite the arm I have made a little progress with the Assault Marines for my Void Panthers. They now have their locus purple done and their genestealer purple highlights in place

It’s gonna be a slow plod from here I think!

He does indeed, though they’re more brothers

My arm is still giving me problems so progress is slower than my usual glacial pace on these. Still I managed to get all of the purple highlight done on their jump packs, then picked out all of the final edge highlights in Dawnstone on the blacks and purples.

That step is usually when I feel like I’m on the home stretch, just tidying up messy highlights, parchment and green accents left on the Marines themselves, then the bases are usually pretty quick too.

Thanks for looking!

With F1 back it was another Sunday evening watching a bit of the race whilst throwing some paint about. First was a bit of tidying of highlights, particularly the black. Next was the green, with some Emerald Green and washed Orc Flesh Wash on the cables, purity seals and lenses. I then finished up with Zandri Dust and Seraphim Sepia on the parchment of the purity seals

the keen of eye amongst you may have spotted that the Sgt is now sporting his loin cloth. Whilst painting his purity seal I realised he was missing it so grabbed one for him, sadly I was out of the tassel version so he gets the cloth version

Thanks JamesY, I can’t take full credit though as I based them on one of John Prins’ Christmas Armies but I went different direction with a few things including the complimentary bases. I had meant to do an army shot but didn’t get around to it, thanks for the reminder:

Keeping up the photo dump I finished the Assault Marines on Thursday night too, bumping me up to 46 minis complete for the year, not bad for the first quarter. They’ve turned out pretty well, not my best work but some of that is because the minis were second hand and I didn’t strip or spend too long prepping them… that’s my excuse anyway!

I quite like how they look from above, kinda reminds me of the BatRep maps of old.

Rather than starting on a new project I started sorting out of the to do list; some more Panthers of the Command squad, Character and Devastator squad variety. I need to do a few more shoulder pad icons before they can be primed.

When I did the Necrons I forgot the tomb blades, so they got a couple of dry brushes

I’ve also built all of the extra minis for my Blackstone Fortress collection

Some of the kits gave me a few extras; a flash Gitz kaptain and Nork Deddog, I have 3 other Gitz to put together too

Next up though will be the final piece for my High Elves, the Tiranoc Chariot

The chariot and horses need a re-prime but the charioteer will just get a bit of a touch up.

Phew! That was a long one, hope you like the mountain of pics. Thanks for looking

Thanks man, everyone loves a good Army shot

Tonight I touched up the Tiranoc Charioteer, nothing complicated, just more in keeping with the rest of my High Elves by getting rid of the golds and greens… not sure what teenage gobert was thinking… it certainly wasn’t about thinning his paints! The closeup really shows the roughness of the old casts and the lumpiness of the paint layers I applied

Thanks Not Online, I’m pleased to report, there’ll be plenty more Void Panthers to come! It feels like it’s been a while since I painted metal minis, so it’s good to be back with the heavy stuff.

I did a little more with the charioteer, tweaking his knifes scabbard to be silver and red. His shoulder pads and wrist guards got some red trim and his helmet plumage got a darkening wash of red. All of the red was using the Blood Red Speed Paint, it’s a really nice colour, and i managed to be neat enough to avoid any reactivation (the old citadel blue wash suffers pretty bad from this too though!).

I also did a bit of work on the chariot itself, it’s looking much better than its previous riot of colour. The horsies are much closer to the silver helms’ mounts. It’s also very refreshing working on effectively 1 model!

Thanks for looking

Nice lookin models gobert. The Coldcron scheme is really unique, the Void Panthers are suitably regal - I like the heat effect in the jump pack thrusters, the blue glow effect is too overdone these days.

What a sculpt on the charioteer, the giant dual crests are ridiculous and perfect. A lot of character in the old models, must be a joy to paint.

Coldcron, I love it, though it’s not unique as I borrowed large swathes of the scheme from an old John Prins recipe here on dakka. His bases were warm tones though, so perhaps his were more minty than Colcron! Glad you liked the glow on the jump pack, iirc they had a rocket like effect in the Space Marine video game so went with heat over the cool blue. Yeah, the Chariot is actually quite fun, I vaguely remember not enjoying painting it back in the day so have been pleasantly surprised this time around. And yep, his horses must’ve super strong to overcome the drag caused by his headdress!

Got some decent progress on the Chariot and horses tonight, intact I think the former is pretty much done. The horses got another highlight plus their saddle and bridle painted Celestra grey with an Ulthuan grey highlight.

I should be able to get the set finished at my next painting session, just the scabbards and metalwork on the bridles and it’ll be done. If I get five minutes during the day tomorrow I might also try to get the base started

Thanks for looking

Hey mate,

So good to see this blog still going! You've been super busy. The snowcrons look amazing - the subtle OSL is really lovely and looks great on the base of the Void Panther sergeant's base too. Crazy to see how far your painting has come since you started the blog - they look good even in super close up which is a rare feat. Love the oldhammer vibes too, that big hatted elf is like a double shot of nostalgia to the chest.

Looking forward to catching up on the rest and seeing more soon.

Thanks mate, good to see you back creating! Glad you like the snowcrons, their bases were heavily plagiarised from your cold bases. Thanks I was looking back at some of my old panthers, and also noticed an improvement in the finished product, thanks for bringing it up!

thanks Olthannon, I’m really enjoying the hobbying at the moment, probably helped with now having 3 large (by my standard) forces at or near completion. I can also report that the Elves are done!
BarryScott wrote:Void panthers on point, Crons looking pretty spicy as well. great stuff!

Thanks Barry, welcome to my plog! More Panthers and Necrons to come!

Last night I finished up the Tiranoc Chariot. I’d managed to sneak in a few short painting sessions to get the final details done and prep the base for painting. The base was the simple dry brushed glowing coals I started with my Chaos force and did on my Silver Helms. Started with a covering of Yriel Yellow, Fired Dragon Bright, Oxide Rust, Wild Rider Red, Evil Sunz Red, Khorne Red, Khorne Red/Black mix, and final heavy dry brush of Black. Getting all of the horses and the Chariot glued together and on contact with the base at the same time AND not leaning over too much proves quite a challenge.

For what was a quick paint job I’m pleased how the Chariot turned out. There’s a few spots I could and should tune up, but I’m really proud to have finally finished an Army for the first time! So proud I stayed up even later to take Army shots for the good people of dakka!

Plus a few moody shots

And that’s my 4th Edition High Elf Army complete, I have no more High Elves left to paint . Fear not though, as I now realise that the banners don’t really match the scheme too well and the Silver Helms don’t have any, so there will be more pics at some point. Come to think of it Eltharion is a bit too colourful, as are some aspects of the Silver Helms, so maybe this is a bit of a Forth Rail Bridge (Golden Gate for my friends across the pond) type scenario

Having taken the pics I decided to stay up even later and make some progress on my Void Panthers board too

The white debris is the new addition. I used my normal mix of adding some mixed consistency sand (from our old patio ) and tester paints… the only thing is that this one is a silk emulsion. Hopefully the acrylic paints stick to it well enough. I might throw some primer on to be sure and get consistent colours

Thanks for looking

Thanks Olthannon, High praise from a fellow Elf fancier . The chariot wheels were dead simple, just a wash of Celestra grey over white, who needs contest paints! Good luck on our chariots and bolt throwers, I look forward to seeing them.

Over the past few days I’ve been doing the odd bit on the Void Panthers display board. First I mixed up some Celestra and Administratum grey which relieved my fear that the silk emulsion wouldn’t take the acrylic paint. I then dry brushed Ulthuan Grey and pure white over everything before adding Boltgun metal to lots of the details

Next I painted a few bits gold and added some colours to a few cables using Speed Paints. Next I picked out some tiles and roads in a mix of Black Templar and Basilicanum Grey

Next I’ll wash pretty much the whole board with Agrax Earthshade

Thanks for looking

I can highly recommend it Olthannon! A display board makes them look even better I think! I wish I’d have gone a bit thicker than the 6mm mdf I used, the Panthers board is sagging under its own weight. I might need to straighten it with some batons I think
mcmattila wrote:Congrats on finishing the elf army! No small feat, and looks great on the display board! The 40k board is also coming along great.

Thanks mcmattila, I’m dead chuffed how they finished up, and I’m glad others like them too!

On the last day of holiday I snook in a quick bit of painting, throwing most of a pot of Agrax at the display board until I ran out

It was also the old style Agrax, so I’ve gone off brand and ordered some Army Painter Strong Tone as a replacement. The internet and dakka suggest it’s a decent replacement so we’ll see.

I also sat down and made a good start on finishing my newest Army and daubed some contrast on the Tomb Blades that I forgot to paint when I did the rest of my Necrons.

These guys should be done pretty quickly by my standards. I’m then torn what to paint next. I’m tempted to start on some Armour for the Panthers, either a Land Raider, Rhino or Predator. I also have a nascent air force for them with a Storm Talon ready one started and Storm Raven to collect from the post office. Then I also have the Blackstone Fortress: Escalation Guardian Drones, some SMH Plague Marines or some Khorne AoS/WHFB guys… decisions, decisions! (Feel free to make suggestions)

Thanks for looking

Yeah, that was kind of my favourite too. I might even get my printer working again and make some Chaoter icons to go on the doors. However, I also got the Labyrinth board game for my Birthday last weekend, so I might jump the minis from that up the queue, probably with some slapchop to get them play ready quickly

In other news, the Void Panthers display board is complete (I’m counting it as 5 minis, the board is 1 and there are 4 ruins). The Army Painter Strong Tone I used to replace the old Agrax just wasn’t up to the standard, it kept bubbling and wasn’t staining or really recess shading very well. In the end I ended up making a wash from brown and grey Speed Paints using glow improver and strong tone to bulk it up. It ended up much darker than old Agrax but it still looks decent enough.

I also took some pics with the Panthers in place;

Some arty ones

And the whole gang

Some of the bases don’t match the board perfectly, being much greyer and blacker on the bases, but I think it’s close enough and sets the scene nicely. I do however need to figure out a backdrop similar to my mount doom pics for the Elves.

I also managed to squeeze in a bit of work on the Tomb Blades as well, getting the first stage of glow done on one of them

Thanks for looking

Thanks Olthannon, it was pretty cool to put together. The kitchen floor was one of the first ideas I had, just lots of little squares of card. The bigger ones outside didn’t turn out so well as their edges turned up with the glue. Glad you liked the action shot, it’s one of the main reasons I built the board. Very restrained of you not buying the Land Raider, I’ve been buying stuff despite having a few years worth of minis to paint in my drawers
muette wrote:Spectacular, both the display board and seeing the whole Panthers army together. What a pleasure must be to play with/against them!

Thanks muette, complete armies are one of the greatest part of the hobby I think, sadly though, the Void Panthers don’t get to take part in games

Yeah, it seems that way, funny how the hobby doldrums come and go!

Last night I slapped some glow on the rest of the tomb blades. They’re all now at the same stage as the first one

There’s actually a surprising amount of glowy bits on these guys. So much that I’ve nearly finished watching the extended edition of The Fellowship of the Ring whilst painting them

Thanks for looking

Very nice work on the board Gobert! The details and coloring looks top notch!
Good work on the pictures too. The one showing the speeder floating behind the building was my favorite!

A board that size truly does take a few litres of wash
For bigger projects where the exact color is not that important, I have started mixing matte medium and black acrylic to create a darkening wash.
A bit cheaper but the results may vary.

Thanks Ezki, I did think about creating my own wash, but in the end laziness won out . I should probably do so when I make the extension board(s) I’m planning with the crashed Aquila Lander

None of my mates play Warhammer :’) and I don’t have the time to go to a club. Maybe as the kids get older I’ll have more time, but until then I’ll carry on enjoying my painting. The one page rules stuff does sound good, the massive rulebook and all of the add ons are a bit of a turnoff tbh
itsonlyme wrote:Great work onto those 5th Ed high elves, the terrain is coming along great.

Thanks! They’re a labour of love and it was a great satisfaction to get them completed.

Just a quick update for now. These guys landed on my desk today and were cleaned up ready for priming. I’m thinking a prime of black and zenithal grey before slapchopping them up. Their features are a bit soft so it might not work too well on Jareth and Sarah. I can also confirm that the plastic is quite soft so was a bit of a pain to clean up, but a quick brush of polycement smoothed them out nicely.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I fancied some painting and Lord of the Rings watching tonight, and I pushed on past bed time to finish up the Tomb Blades. Recipe was the same as previous Necrons, Gauss blaster green washed in the glow recesses, black orbs and ardcoat to finish off the orbs.

And with that I’ve completed my second Armg which is also my newest. I’ll have to get some pics on the Panthers’ board to show them off again now that they’re fully complete

Thanks for looking and the encouragement along the way!

Yeah it seems they don’t work, but surely the Land Raider will slow me down? I’m excited to paint the minis, and I just took delivery of the Goblins and Fireys expansion. The Fireys are particularly cool. Sadly there’s no Humongous expansion so I’ll still have to play the game with a card standup piece :(
Olthannon wrote:Nice tomb blades Gobert! They look really cool. Looking forward to seeing the Labyrinth minis, they look really characterful.

Thanks Olthannon, it was fun to paint a small batch and get them done really fast, it was quite a squeeze to fit them on the Necron shelf that they share with my Orks.
ItsVaughany wrote:Tomb Blades look awesome - inspiring me to get mine assembled!

Thanks ItsVaighany, welcome to my plog! Good luck assembling the Tomb Blades. There’s a few tricky pieces that are also quite fragile, but they’re still cool minis. As for Bowie, he’s part way through slapchopping, but sadly I forgot to take a pic. I’ll get the expansions to a similar state this week and hopefully the whole gang will be next on my painting desk once I’ve painted the inside to the Raider.

Another weekend, another Grand Prix to watch! Bit of a dull race, so I managed to get a good bit of the Land Raider done. I washed it with Druchi Violet first, then smoothed out he flat surfaces with Dawnstone mixed with Druchi. Then I got the metallics done with Leadbelcher and Retributor Armour before some Zandri Dust on the seating areas. Washes next before some fun with screens and lighting

Thanks for lookokg

I’d seen that they did a Dark Crystal game too. Mrs gobert loved Dark Crystal, but tbh the Labyrinth game is a bit dull. The minis are cool, but the basic game is, well, basic. Ok to play with the kids, but not enough jeopardy. I’ll give it another go with all of the expansions to see if that helps.

In the meantime I’ve managed to get the interior of the Land Raider pretty much done, just the light on the roof to go. Since the last post I went with a slightly lighter shade on the purple surfaces. I think it’s a bit closer to the Land Speeder cabin now (for future reference it was 2:1 Dawnstoneruchi violet). The metallics all got a wash of old Nuln Oil, soon I’ll have to switch to the new version. On the engine area I played with a few different speed paints and contrast paints to get a bit more variety. The brown over silver looks pretty good I think. Then I got on to the screens! I started with the greens giving them a bit of a glow and some a bit of a sense of something on the display. A few were done in red too, also having a glow but not sure that’s as good as ok the green.

I also spent a bit of time getting my printer back up and running. Once I got that sorted I set off on some iconography for the Raider

I gave the ironing setting that came with the latest software a go, and I think it works pretty well. So well I’ve even decided to print some covers for the weapon openings. They should be done in the morning Ad. Will cover up the ugly gaps.

Thanks for looking

Thanks jazzy, there’s a bunch of details that I felt had to be painted. I only wish that I’d not glued in the sliding internal side doors now! Maybe on the next one!
Not Online!!! wrote:That is an interior that you can be proud of!

Cheers Not Online, it’s been really fun to paint, and I’ll have to display it with the front open disgorging Terminators!

Probably my quickest print to painted thing to date, printed Saturday night, primed Sunday morning and finished Sunday night! The panel was free on thingiverse from gynovin and looks pretty cool in place, and even better painted. Some of the details were a little fuzzy, but the new ironing setting means the flat surfaces are really smooth (if only there were a setting for vertical and curved surfaces!).

And with that the internals were complete

So with that it was time to put the Land Raider together and take some moody shots before I put the top hatches on

The last 2 are pretty cool how the light shines on the engine and the Mechanicus symbol. I’m really pleased how the internals turned out. The printed parts, despite not being that visible just finish the look. I’m claiming the internals as a completed mini and the external will be another, albeit much bigger job.

That leaves me with my current conundrum, so I go Black or Gold for the outside. All of my regular Marine vehicles are black which is a good contrast to the Gold marines. However, since it’s a Terminator transport and they’re going to be Black I’m thinking the Land Raider should be Gold. What say you guys?

Thanks for looking

Very nice interior there, great background for immersive photo sessions.

Gold is one of those colours that I personally feel is very hard to get right in large areas, especially if you're using metallic paints. Black with blingier details for the elite unit would be my choice.

Thanks sherrypie, I’m already getting itchy feet to start on the terminator to go with their ride! I think you’re right on the large areas of gold. I was wondering how best to paint such large flat panels and couldn’t come up with a decent idea. So I’ve gone with Black. I used a new primer though and it doesn’t seem quite as nice as my usual choice. It seems to have a much rougher finish than I’d like but it is much more matte too. I might give it’s quick brush coat to see if that helps any

Oh yeah, that interior is awesome! It's kinda sad that it will be largely hidden now that the tank is assembled, but at least there's photos. A Land Raider is the only tank I've ever painted, and it was when I was in my teens in mid-noughties. No photos of the carefully painted interior, as good quality digital cameras weren't a thing back then...

I think black is the right choice for the exterior. Though if you want inspiration for the gold, PLASMO recently made a Custodes Land Raider painted with actual gold!

Hehe! Yeah, there’s plenty of gubbins in this Land Raider! It’s been great fun and I’m excited to get more progress on it.
mcmattila wrote:Oh yeah, that interior is awesome! It's kinda sad that it will be largely hidden now that the tank is assembled, but at least there's photos. Thanks mcmatilla. It’s a shame you don’t have the pics, a flash light and removing the top hatches might reveal the details I suppose? Though some of the viewing angles are a bit tight! That gold Land Raider is awesome, I felt the pain of trimming, filling and sanding the seam at the top of the sides again though!

Yesterday I embraced the fact I’m not at work today and smashed out some work on the outside of the Raider. The main surfaces got a thin coat of Vallejo Black to try and reduce some of the roughness that the primer left. Not sure it worked, but it was worth a try!

My Leadbelcher bottle seemed to have dried up as the neck had split. I managed to rescue a good portion of it with flow improver and airbrush thinner and then I decided to mix it with my old Boltgun metal. It turned out pretty well and has a nice consistency now, something I often struggle to find with metallics. In the end it went on pretty well although doing the tracks was pretty time consuming!

I went to town on the gold embellishments, getting plenty of the raised areas and recessed shapes along with the iconography. I think I has a bit of a Black Legion look which is exactly what I was going for!

I then forgot to do the purple areas and jumped straight in to the Nuln Oil wash. This was my first time using the new formula and honestly, it was pretty good. It even seems to have a nice smell! The only downside is it pooled a fair bit (that was probably more on me not watching out for it) and some of the finer recesses didn’t get particularly dark (mainly on the printed Panthers). I can probably fix both of those later on with a bit of sanding and delicate brush work when I tidy up the black.

Really pleased how she’s looking so far, pretty much how I imagined and I’m surprised how much I’m enjoying painting it. The Land Speeder was a bit of a chore so I was a bit worried this would be too. Maybe it’ll be the edge highlighting that does for me!?

Thanks for looking

Beautiful work on the internals of the LR, mate. Will be a proud moment every time you unload the termies. It's looking a treat already with the gold trim & boltgun parts. Good luck with the edges...there are so many!

The tomb blades look great as well, you've really unlocked a winner with that cold metal scheme. On a painting unrelated note I think it's really funny how GW sizes their flying bases - just like Eldar jetbikes the small bases look so tiny underneath them!

Also can't wait to see the Labyrinth minis painted up - what a nostalgia hit.

Keep it up mate & thanks for sharing.

Thanks tzurk, I’m already dreaming up the new display shelf it’ll live on with matching Terminators disgorging from its lavishly gubbinsed interior. . The tomb blades were I nice quick project, and yeah, the flying base sizes are a bit funny!

Another evening of painting got the steel all dry brushed; Boltgun Metal followed by Mithril Silver. Went back and picked out all of the rivets with Boltgun Metal. I then painted all of the bits I wanted to be purple with Liche Purple. Recess shaded the purple areas, all of the gold panels and the exhaust cooling jacket with more Nuln oil. Used some black Templar contrast on the narrow bits of the printed icons. Tidied up the gold areas with Retributor Armour (forgot the sponsons ). Then finished off by tidying up the black areas on the left hand side of the Raider.

I’m loving how it’s coming together! Can’t wait to do some more work on it!

Thanks for looking!

Indeed, it’s a classic look!

Well, I’ve been creeping closer with the odd hour here and there this week and I capped it off by watching 2 Movies (Air & Drive, both really enjoyable ) tonight and finishing off the Land Raider! The edge highlighting was quite a slog, but I’m satisfied with the result. I then had a bit of fun with the view ports and various lenses before finishing off with the lights. It’s stupid late now, so I’ll just attach the pics and fix it in the morning

Thanks for the encouragement along the way!

That would be cool to see, would it be in Deathwing or Greenwing colours? Or some other chapter? I was surprised how motivated I was to paint this, much more enjoyable than the Land Speeder I did.
amazingturtles wrote:Nice to see the Void Panthers are still going strong!

They are indeed turtles, still plenty more to come. I’ve got a few characters, command squad and Devastator squad sat ready to prime. I also have 3 squads of Terminators needing some Chapter icons too. With all this talk of Sternguard being Last Chance To Buy I’ve been low bidding on eBay but also tempted to convert some Dark Angels Company Veterans. I think shoulder pads are the main missing items to do that successfully so we’ll see!

Yesterday I had a little play, settling the Land Raider in to its temporary home on the Panthers display shelf (it’ll move to a new one with the first company when I make it). I should take some more pics of it individually too I suppose

You can barely see the Land Raider in this, but I like how the running marine is pointing out a target for his brother

I tried out a few background pics for this, but it was hard finding a decent one. This seemed to fit the best but its resolution is a bit low. If anyone know of a cool 40k city picture that’s at street level, please send me a link.

Thanks for looking

Thanks Olthannon, I’m very pleased with it, need some elite troops for it now!
youwashock wrote:I love all of that. Great shots, gobert.

Thanks youwashock, it’s what the Hobby’s all about right?

After no success low bidding on eBay and deciding against spending almost as much on bits as complete squads we’re going for I decided to convert up my Dark Angels Company Veterans to Sternguard. Some of the iconography removal was tricky, but I managed to clean it all up. I’m actually quite pleased how well removing the sword from the chest eagle went and I even managed to find a tiny skull to replace it too .

Not content with these fiddly bits I decided I didn’t have enough Crux Terminatus (I think that’s what it’s called). So I found a few skull crosses from the Venerable Dreadnought kit and filed them thinner and curved their back before softening them with poly cement to fit the shoulder pad curvature

Still not content with their blingness their back packs all got toppers from different banner poles. I think my favourite might be the Blood Angels winged skull with its blood drop removed. The 2nd Edition backpack also had its circular bit at the back removed and replaced with a small small crux terminatus (also from the Ven Dread kit).

Something my normal marines have been lacking of late, they all got a mix of grenades and pouches. Then in terms of load out they all got a Combi weapon with the Sergeant getting a power sword. I even managed to find an array of pointing hands in my Blood Angels bits bag!

Quite a long post with only 1 pic, but I’m pleased with what is essentially a free squad of Sternguard made from bits I had no other use for! They might even get bumped up my painting queue I’ve enjoyed building them so much! That wind be for a while though as we go on holiday to Rhodes for half term

Thanks for looking!

Wow, that Land Raider turned out amazing!

In my early hobby years when I was jut about to transition to 40k from Warhammer Fantasy, I could not make up my mind on which army to start.
The Land Raider along with the classic Dreadnought were one of the coolest models in my opinion.
It's something about the boxiness, the weaponry and the front hatch, that you simply can't beat.

I remember eyeing them in the catalogs over and over, thinking that I would definitely go with an army that could have multiple Land Raiders (like I could afford them back then).
Then something snapped, and I became a Xenos scum after all.

Anyway, looking at the action shots, especially the first one with the speeder in the background, makes me remember why I thought that way.
Really freaking cool. Thanks for that.

Thanks Ezki, though you’re making me feel my age . This particular mark of Land Raider wasn’t born when I left the hobby for a good long time. I’m actually lucky enough to have one of the Rogue Trader versions in my Blood Angels collection (I’ll get back to repainting them at some point). I do have one of the boxy Dreadnoughts though (plus my brothers Bjorn the fellhanded). I’m glad I could hit you right in the Nostalgias, and I know what you mean about the boxy aesthetic having that je ne sais quoi!

I’ve been away this past week, but did a bit of hobby on Sunday whilst watching the Grand Prix. First things first, I sorted out the bases for the Sternguard/Company Veterans.

I’m dead pleased with the bases too. I took inspiration from ph34rs Imperial Guard where they pieces together multiple Sector Imperialis bases to make bigger unique ones. Whilst I did this on one of the bases I went the other way and cut up some bike bases and put them on some short 32mm bases I had. Really effective and adds a bit of variety for not much extra effort, cheers ph34r!

Whilst I was away a late Birthday present to myself arrived, a box containing Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corps along with 2 expansions; Get Away From Her You B***h! & Ultimate Badasses. I’d also received a box of Xenomorphs a few weeks ago, so will have plenty of extras. I got to work building the core set starting with the Colonial Marines, Ripley and Newt

I also built a couple of the Xenomorphs

I think the minis look pretty decent, and I’m looking forward to doing some research as I paint them up, i.e. watching the movies. I’m thinking the Xenomorphs might be an all airbrush job trying to give them some mood lighting type OSL. I’ll try a couple and see if they look awful

Also hiding in the background of the Colonial Marines was the Techmarine kitbash I did a while back. I bought a zinge industries backpack and built that for him. Looks a bit more techy now

Thanks for looking!

Nuke ‘em from orbit, it’s the only way to be sure! Love the movie, hopefully the game is decent enough to live up to my hype! Need to paint them first though
amazingturtles wrote:Alliums! They do seem like they'll be fun to paint up.

I hope so! Need to figure out how I’m going to do them, which is always an anxiety spike!

Through the week I built a few more Aliens, I think I’m up to 10/36 Xenomorphs now. I’m kind of impressed that they seem to look different despite there only being 4 bodies, 4 tails with 8 arms (4 left, 4 right) and 8 heads. Only the arms are posable, rotating up and down at the shoulder. I reckon I could add some more through decapitating heads and turning them somewhat and shaving down the arm connectors. I also wonder whether I could heat the tails to bend them differently? Sadly no picks of the horde

I went off on a tangent today, whilst waiting for a work meeting on my day off, I decided to paint some Khorney boys. I had originally planned purple for them, but as I was slapping on the metallics I changed my mind. They’ll be red and gold as Khorne intended. I’m not entirely sure what they’re called, but they’re pretty cool. Loads of details and probably a few too many spikes to paint them without bases. I had toyed with getting them square bases, but I’ve also found some round to square movement trays that I might look in to printing. Anyway, they’re coming along nicely even if the Red isn’t as shiny as I’d hoped.

Edit: pic added and apparently they’re Khorne Blood Reavers and Blood Warriors

Thanks for looking!

Tonight I did a bit more on the Khorney boys. Mainly contrast and speed paints on the black and greys. I decided the metal work would be blackened too. Then on to the final steps of painting the good bits

The Reavers are pretty much done, maybe a few details, but pretty much done. The warriors obviously need their god trim painting. I’ll definitely be going with round bases and a printed movement tray.

Thanks for looking

I know, that murderous rage of Khorne seems to be good for their physique! Contrast seems custom made for such abs too

I managed a base the Khorne lads the other day, they’ll be getting the same treatment as the previous Chaos and the Elven cavalry. All good hot coals start with a basecoat of yellow. Whilst waiting for that to dry I did the good trim on 2 of the Blood Warriors, my Khorne was that time consuming! Still they look much more Khorne already

For next to no effort I think they look pretty decent so far. I’ve also just set my printer going on a unit base for them, hopefully it turns out ok.

I’ve also done a bit more assembly on the Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corps sets, getting the Get away from her, you B***h player minis built (the Power Loader was pretty fun)

Worryingly the Xenomorphs infestation of my hobby area is getting worse

It was nice of them to form up in a regiment formation though! Only another 20 more to go

Great job Gobert! me like

They sure do, the meat grinder gets more blood for the blood god! That’s a point, I’ll have to remember to slap plenty of that on these guys!
Olthannon wrote:Some great updates Gobert, looking forward to seeing the aliems all painted. Are you going to give them a gloss over the top?

Thanks Olthannon, yeah I’ll definitely go glossy for the Xenomorphs, though I’ll also try to paint a bit of a shine too. In fact, that’s a point, my only varnish is matte l, so I’ll have to get a can of gloss! Cheers for the nudge!

Last night I did a little more hobby. First up was the movement tray that I printed in the morning and slapped some texture on this afternoon. One good thing about heatwaves is that this stuff dries really quickly! That got a coat of Yriel yellow and I got on with the gold trim. I tidied up a few bits with Black Templar then slapped on Agrax Earthshade over all of the gold. That’s where I left off;

The more I look at them, the more I think the red is a bit dull and not enough contrast. The Agrax outlines helped and mixed nicely with the reactivating red. I also wonder if I should’ve done the red skulls normally? I might throw some blood for the blood go on them and see how that looks.

Through the week I also put together the rest of the player models for Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corps.

I also have 16 completed Xenomorphs and the Alien Queen but I forgot to photograph them. Once I’ve built another 12 Xenomorphs I’ll be done with what I have at the moment, but there’s a Hazards and Assets expansion that I’m hoping is re-released shortly, one website says the end of July. Once I have that I’ll get priming everything

Thanks for looking

The Khorne Bloodbound are getting there. Spent a good bit of the F1 drybrushing their hot coals base and unit tray. Then I tidied up their boots with some celestra grey and Black Templar.

I think I’ll have a look at a few bits next time I do some painting, but I’m close to calling them done… not before a good dose of Blood for the Blood God of course!

Here’s proof of the Xenomorphs I said I’d built

I got some black primer too today for them, so will get to them eventually.

Damn, now you've got me wanting to get into this Marine/Xenomorph stuff. I think some non-gaming mates would be well up for this.

How are you going to paint the Xenomorphs? Maybe some iridescent shenanigans?

Yeah, I saw them a little while back and decided to go for the game in the hopes of playing it with Mrs gobert as she’s a big fan of the franchise too. I wanna get them painted up before I do that and since seeing your post I’ve been looking at iridescent paints. I might have to take the plunge and give them a try on these guys, thanks for the idea!

Yeah, I probably should’ve gone darker with brighter highlights, but I just wasn’t inspired to do much else on them :(

Yeah she’s a big b***h alright! Can’t wait to see Power Loader Ridley squaring up to her either! The basing is probably my favourite bit on these guys (apart from BFTBG which is awesome!)

As you can tell from above I wasn’t really motivated to much more on the Khorne lads. They got some very minimal touch ups and a stippling and dribbling of Blood For The Blood God. At which point I called them done. Not my best work by a long way, but 8 more minis done. Here they are in technicolour:

And some individual shots (apologies, I forgot to trim them)

Last week I was away with work and with those guys nearly done I decided to grab some Tactical Marines I primed a couple of weeks back. While I was away I got their Boltgun metal and purple done. Tonight I did their black areas and their Nuln Oil wash.

The new Nuln, whilst it doesn’t stain nearly as much as the old stuff, it doesn’t seem to darken their recesses quite so much either. I might have to break out the black Templar contrast in some areas. Some of these guys were painted eBay rescues, and in places they’re pretty bad. Still I hope to be able to mask their problems with a shiny new paint job!

Thanks for looking!

Nice looking Khorne boys gobert. I like the blood on their chest symbols. I think they look a bit silly normally, but bloodied sells the berserker-blood-cultist idea much better. Yeah, they’re passable, I’m still in awe at how well their skin tones came out with a quick contrast/speed paint layer.

Thanks Thumpingbear, I was originally planning a bruised/red for the chesty bits, but forgot and though sod it, I’ll through some blood on there. Makes sense for them to psych themselves up for battle by reopening old wounds I guess! Happy to hear that the bases look like hot coals, it’s super easy and looks pretty good I think!

Definitely, these boys were certainly that and pleased to hear others thing they look good.

More f1 tonight, so I did a fair bit on the Panthers, getting the highlights done on their metallics and tidying up a few panel lines that are a bit gummed up with paint.

Next will be bringing the purple back to liche purple, at chich point I’ll also do a few samples on my test marine. He happens to be a metal Dark Angels Company Vet, so he’ll be a good bit of practice and sampling a couple of ideas I have for their robes. I’ll try to remember to take a few pics of the steps to help me remember.

The Sternguard/Company vets and a few Xenomorphs for a prime of a new black spray I bought. Seems quite nice a finish, hopefully it takes paint well. I also spent a good while making moulds for my Terminators too (just Space Marine Heroes and regular terminators, not Leviathan ones like everyone else). Will check tomorrow how they’ve turned out

Thanks man, contrast and speed paints did the heavy lifting on their muscles, it must’ve been made for these guys. I might’ve made a cheeky start on the vets too.
Not Online!!! wrote:I say whatever you did on the khornate helped out of my persepctive massivly.

Thanks Not Online, glad to have more finished minis. The Panthers are motoring along now too.

I got a bit of that spare time today that Olthannon was on about, it’s pretty rare in this household. Anyways, I used it to throw some purple at a bunch of minis. The tacticals got some on their helmets, shoulder pads and weapon highlights. I also put basecoats down on the Sternguard helmets and shoulder pads, after drilling holes in their necks so I could paint their helmets easier.

The new primer I got seems to work pretty well and doesn’t stink the house out when I bring the minis back inside. In preparation for the Sternguards cloaks I did a few test on my venerable test marine.

The back was a drybrush but I think it just looks a bit too grey, probably as I went to heavy on the final step and not heavy enough on the purple. I think that’s out

These 3 are the real candidates. Top is just layers but using really thinned paints and intermediate mixes for each step. Left hand side (marines right leg) is a textured highlight, with an added initial highlight of Eshin grey before the purple. Right hand side is more normal highlights again with the Eshin grey. I think all 3 have their merits, though I reckon I’ll drop the Eshin in favour of a black and purple mix. I’ll give him another coat of black and try again. When I do I’ll get a better brush out to try to be neater too! What do you guys reckon? Any preference?

Thanks for looking

For the cloak, the chest looks quite good. It also looks like it takes the longest. I am curious about how the textured highlight would look on the whole thing, though.

Yeah, it’s a good look! I’m also leaning towards the chest style. The hatching looks cool too, but these guys are clean, so I think I need to do smooth layers if I can. I’ll save the rough around the edges look for other forces…
amazingturtles wrote:Space Giraffes! Adeptus Acacia.

love it, Space Giraffes need to be a thing! Smooth gets the vote, so I best get practising.

Well, having missed out on the Lion 1st time around I’ve taken the plunge and got him on pre-order! I might have also gone a bit mad and bought a couple more minis too… Azrael (couldn’t resist another watcher) plus the other half of Indomitus got some love in the form of Illuminor Szeras and a Psychomancer.

To make myself feel less bad about buying more minis I decided to get cracking with the Void Panthers. The Tacticals are now pretty much there. Just the green lenses and purity seals to go, plus their bases of course.

With any luck I’ll get them pretty finished tonight while watching the F1.

Thanks youwashock, overall they look pretty decent, but there are a couple of areas where they’re a bit dodgy. Some of the eye lenses were quite filled by paint and some chest eagles are poorly defined. I think I managed to hide the imperfections pretty well though.

Unfortunately I didn’t quite manage to finish these guys off, but there’s only one or 2 minor bits to do

If I get an hour in the week I’ll get them done and switch focus to the Sternguard.

Thanks turtles, I think you’d have to give them neck extensions to make it obvious

I managed to get a little time the other day and I’m calling these Tactical Marines done. I’ve tried something a bit different with the pics, let me know what you think

Here they are individually too

And I couldn’t put them on their shelf without a pic there too

So I’m now 1.5 squads away from having a full Demi company. I reckon I should be able to squeeze them all on the single shelf. I’ll definitely need a new shelf for the 1st company marines though.

I’ll hopefully get some decent progress on the Sternguard over the weekend.

The "photoshoppiness" of the pics distracts from your cool models. The places where the black didn't fill in and that pixel halo around the model are breaking the image for me. Your "in-situation" pics are always so good, if you are looking for a darker backdrop, I would suggest a piece of matte paper or a black cloth and let the camera do the work. Great looking Panthers!

Yeah, I think you’re right. On my phone the background was white but on here they are black. I guess it’s actually transparent, but I didn’t want to mess about with another app. Perhaps a black background would make the technique work better, but I prefer pale backgrounds really. Here’s the uncut originals for comparison;

I think they look better than the black background and white outlines

I managed to sneak in some painting today between chores and somehow got quite a bit done; gold, silver and black basecoats followed by a Nuln oil wash;

I’m already enjoying how they look, though the walking chaps have more gold than I’d envisaged. Still, they all got a bit of extra gold with a stripe down the centre of their helmets. I was planning to give the sergeant a gold lined black stripe but as he has a crest already I thought a black face guard would look cool instead.

One thing I’m not yet decided on is whether to give them purple liners on their cloaks. I’m thinking not at the moment as they outers will be highlighted purple anyway.

I did a bit more work on the DA Company Vets come Sternguard… not that there’s much difference between the pics . I had hoped to get the highlights done as well but I was nodding off at the painting desk, so stopped after tidying up post washes!

Still, I’m liking how they’re looking, especially their gold stripes on the lids. With any luck I’ll get a good bit of progress this weekend as it’s an F1 week so I’ll be banished to the hobby zone to watch it

Managed a bit more whilst watching Quali (actually a good one throughout for the first time in a while). All of the metallics got their highlights.

Not sure they stand out too well in the pic, certainly not as strongly as they do in real life. Next it’ll be tidy up of the blacks and purples before their highlights. Any views on the Sergeants tabard? I’d normally paint them the same way I plan to do their gowns (black with purple highlights) but I think it would get lost like that, so am tempted by green or a grey highlighted black? Maybe a green highlighted black? Or even go crazy with white or red(nice black legion link there)? Let me know what you think

Good question about the tabards - you have a nice warm colour palette there so a dark green or crimson could tie into that nicely. Youwashock's idea of a grey could work nicely too. Might have to be a test and see type job?

Yeah, they’re pretty silly, and quite challenging to balance (I had a beer or 2 tonight, so didn’t bother as I would likely have failed ). green is well established in the colour scheme so I’m leaning that way. I might have to do a couple of swatches on my test marine
amazingturtles wrote:I say go for green. Give him some uniqueness!

I thing I’m heading that way. Test marine will have a few patches painted when I get a chance

Another F1 to follow the Verstappen STC Pattern so I made good progress on the Sternguard. Their flow is we’re tidied up a little, then got some Black-Liche Purple, Liche Purple, Liche Purple-AP Uniform Grey, Uniform Grey highlights;

I think the job was accomplished, it reads as black, but with a not too overpowering purple tint. I’m glad I did the black-purple mix first, if softened things a little.

Next will be the usual Panthers steps of highlighting the black before I decide whether to include the tabard on the green list.

Thanks for looking and the tabard discussion!

Thanks jazzy, I was certainly pleased that it works as well on pyjamas as it does tanks! I hadn’t thought of doing straight up purple maybe others in the first company will get some like that. In the end I’ve gone for a black with green highlights.

I’m away this weekend and will be embarking on DIY projects when I get home, so I decided to squeeze in some hobby time. I made a bit more progress on the Sternguard blocking out the purple on shoulder pads and helmet before giving their weapons a purple highlight. I then got the base layers on green bits (eye lenses, belts and purity seals). The green was also used to highlight the sergeants tabard.

I highlighted the The sergeants race plate in purple, but I should probably do it in grey as it blends too much with the rest of the helmet. I’ll try to remember to fix it next time.

That’s all for now, thanks for looking

Thanks Captain, hopefully I’ll get to finish them soon.

No painting update, but I thought I’d share my recent eBay shenanigans. With all the Firstborn last chance to buy stuff happening I got perhaps a little over eager and splashed some of a recent bonus on this little pile;

The listing suggested about 40 marines and 20 terminators alongside a land speeder and attack bike. Alongside another purchase that’ll give me a squadron of 3 of each! With all of the marines I’ll also be close to a full Void Panthers Company! If that wasn’t enough there are at least 2 Ravenwing bikes, a Dreadnought and I’m pretty sure enough bits to build a rhino. Teenage gobert would be ridiculously jealous at the prospect of owning a full company of Space Marines (I’ll pretty much have a Demi 1st company too ), I’m not too far behind those levels of excitement either. The orange bag is chock full of goodies that I need to explore and catalogue the haul. Suffice to say I’ll be busy expanding the Panthers for some time to come!

Yeah LOADS of potential, much more than I had bargained for! Unfortunately I think I’m a bit slower than Midas was, but at least I can eat
Olthannon wrote:Wow fantastic stuff Gobert. Very cool to have a whole company, looking forward to the army photos when you've got the full lot.

Yep, it’s a dream, need to hold back on going all in for a chapter now!
Syro_ wrote:That's exciting about making a full space marine company

It’ll take a while, but I’ll give it a go now I have all of the stuff I need!
DJJazzyJeff wrote:Haha, yes!

Thanks, it was eagerly awaited that’s for sure… mainly so Mrs gobert didn’t see the huge box
amazingturtles wrote:Marines galore. Give one of them a pet panther!

Now that is an idea! Got one in the post for the Chapter Master!

No painting updates as my time has been taken up with painting ceilings and walls (I’m nowhere near as fit as i used to be and it’s knackered me!). I might try to sneak some mini-guy painting at the weekend between skirting boards and banister spindles . What I have managed to do is to de-sprue and tally up most of the bits from the massive eBay haul, and it was even more impressive than I thought
74 legs
72 torso backs
81 torso fronts
72 helmeted heads
86 backpacks
144 plain shoulder pads
39 bolt guns
Loads of arms and pouches and purity seals and banner poles
1 attack bike (minis a rider, but I found a spare set of legs
1 Ravenwing bike (plus 2 non-matching halves)
10 vehicle hatch sprues (goodness knows how many rhinos/predators/land raiders this guy had!)
1 complete rhino
1 Dreadnought with multiple weapon choices
13 Assault Terminators
4 Terminators
12 Plasma Cannons
9 (possibly 10) Assault Marines with Jump packs
7 Heavy Bolters
9 Lascannons
4 Multi Meltas
10 Missile Launchers
20 Marine transfer sheets
10 Marine vehicle transfer sheets

Sadly there were no Devastator legs so I might have to buy some of those. I’m already thinking of how I should equip the units. I’ll adjust and split the already built Missile Devs and ensure each squad has 1 of each type, though I’m tempted to do away with the Bolter Marines and do 4 off 5 marine squads of each weapon I have .
I’m thinking each tactical squad should get a different heavy weapon (probably do duplicates of Missile Launchers (already built 2) and Plasma as they look cool.
I’m not sure how to do the Assault squad, I have pretty much enough bits for 7 or 8 bikes, so might sell the jump marines or maybe I keep them and have the bikes as a detachment from a reserve company alongside the Land Speeder and Attack Bike squadrons?
So many marines, so many choices! 41st century problems I suppose . Whatever I choose, I can probably open a bits store to recover some of the costs!

Yeah, it should keep me busy for a while! I forgot to get a pic of the Panther. She’s much bigger than I expected, so will need her own base!
Syro_ wrote:Quite a haul indeed! Wow.

A few years of painting I reckon! Longer probably as I’ll want to paint other things

Decorating has been keeping me busy of late so I’ve had little hobby time but Mrs gobert wanted to do some sewing tonight so I snuck in a quick bit on the Sternguard. I managed to highlight all the black pouches and the chapter symbols with a mix of AP Uniform Grey and VMC German Grey (my Eshin grey seems to have run out), then straight uniform grey which I also used to highlight the purple areas once they had their light purple highlight. All the parchment got Zandri Dust basecoat and seraphim sepia wash. I finished up by doing the first highlight of Emerald green on the Purity seals, rope belts and eye lenses

Oh and looking at the picture I remembered I did uniform grey on the black/green tabard too. That means I just have parchments and second green highlights to do before these guys are finished apart from their bases.

A few days back I did get some time to start work on the massive haul, building up 3 Assault Marines who mostly just needed rebasing and some minor mould line removal. The flamer dude used some old pieces I had from the previous squad and a new torso. I also made the decision that this force won’t have any metal so swapped a metal Heavy Bolter for a plastic Multi Melta.

The Sgts base is repurposed from an ETB Intercessor but the rest are all taking inspiration for ph34r aa they’ve been made from cutting up other Sector Imperialis bases to expand the variations.

I’m away next week so won’t be getting any hobby done, but hopefully will be done with decorating to get cracking with these guys.

Thanks for looking

I know! It’s quite daunting to take on a project of your scale! Any tips?

Since I was tantalisingly close to finishing last night I decided to have another hobby session tonight and finished up the Sternguard. A bright highlight on the greens was followed by multiple high lights on the parchments plus a few layers and washes on their bases and we’re done!

And one more for good luck!

Overall I’m pretty happy how they’ve turned out. They’re not as black as I’d imagined, but they still have enoug to differentiate themselves from the horde of gold and purple. Their good stripes on their helmets look really cool too, I’m glad I went with that. Similarly the black faceplate and green tabard on the sergeant seem to have worked well.

I’ve snapped a few individual and group pics, so I’ll post those in the next few days. I’m feeling the panthers right now so might do something for them next too, but I’m away for the next weekish, so wont get any painting done for a while yet.

Thanks for looking!

Oh boi. Tipps.
Spoiler:
Well, there's some pictures of my penciling. I have a "black-book" which is basically an empty book in which i plan out a force, make a table for what i need. What it costs, what paints i will use. Bit of the background. etc.

Then, i filter that down, say f.e. my AL force and then break the force up in 2-3 bulks. The first bulk is basically a rough skeleton force that if you finish it, can be put on a table and in a display case and look "organic", therefore that bulk is basically mostly a starter + 1-2 things. Often the bigger centerpiece, for my 30k militia it was the malcador and then an infantry core surounding it.

Then i buy the first bulk and don't buy anything else i don't need until it's done --> then stage 2 then --> stage 3.

That is to reign in pile of shames, which make you sluggish and deter attention required to finalise a force. Which believe me, a finished force, even if it just exists in display cases or crates is better than 3 started forces not even getting over the built stage. It's also a money saving meassure. Because we are talking about a GW hobby.... so apply NaCl and consider pricing, suppliers etc. and if you can't replace certain things with 3rd parties which often are a fraction of the cost whilest having often higher quality sadly. Especially on the resin front...

Getting started with it, i work with increments of units regularly according to my list.

F.e. today i am building 5 grenadiers. next day another 5 and then in 4 days i have a full unit built of grenadiers, that will require greenstuff.
Then i greenstuff.

Then i go to the next unit. Sometimes you get into a flow, that you should not stop but always finish an increment.

After you built that bulk, base coat the whole bunch in one go.

Then you start painting, and just like the building stage i work in increments. This time you pick a colour step and then put down the unit, start to finish. --> next unit etc.
If you do that in one sitting because of the flow, great if not, you can still say at the end of it, 1 unit 1 step done.

What happens then normally, is, for me atleast, i got a unit that is basically finished and another one requiring 2 steps to finish and another one that already has it's metal baseline done.
And that motivates.

And that you repeat.

iow, planning and a degree of "small"self-discipline. And that pays off. Considering my own blog which i started mainly to keep me motivated to hobby because i didn't enjoy painting, but it kept me going ontop of being a distraction in a time that wasn't particulary nice for me. And i became decently good at painting ontop of teaching me another very important lession:

I may never reach GD or can compete with some of the genuine hobby artists , but with a simplified enough paintsheme and regular steps, i can paint forces that look not only cohesive but awesome on a table. Add to that my penchant for old school conversions and i got a force that atleast is awesome for my opponents to play against and look at.

TL: DR learn self- discipline by establishing a plan with small enough "chore" steps to keep going.

Also that are probably your best panthers yet, hands down. Where is the orkish gentlemen clapping emote when i need it.

Great tips NotOnline, though I’ve failed already on some of them, mainly the pile of shame one! I’ll be trying to get them all built before starting on the painting, and it’d be good to get the Demi company done first too. I like the idea of a centre piece to build around, so maybe I should paint some vehicles in between squads too?

I’ve re-edited the original post pics as they were a bit dull. I’ve also edited the individual shots too, which of course reveal bits that I missed! : D . First up the Combi-Melta dude

He seems to be missing some writing on his shoulder pad and I forgot to highlight the tiny purity seal on his scroll hanging from his belt. Next the combi-grav dude

I quite like how he’s nonchalantly strolling forward getting ready to lob a grenade like it’s nothing. He still needs the tips of his rope belt painting and the base edges are really shoddy so I might fill those too. Next is the first of the combi-plasma lads

Main thing missing here is the glow on the plasma his pointing mate suffered a similar fate

Pointer also has a lack of writing on his shoulder pad too. Originally I was naming all of my Void Panthers, maybe I need to resurrect that? Last up is the Sergeant;

I think he’s pretty much good to go, though maybe I should do a bit of a glow on his power sword nodule thingy? Oh and I just remembered that I forgot the white dots on their lenses. Anyway, I’ll claim them as done and touch them up when I get the chance. (I might’ve missed some arm cables in green too )

Thanks for looking. Display Board pics to follow

A bit later than planned thanks to being on holiday, here are the pics of the Sternguard on the Panthers’ display board

I’m dead chuffed with them on the display board, though being first company they will move to the new board when that’s finished construction and is painted.

I’ll be back home tonight, and it’s an F1 weekend so I’ll be getting my paint sticks out on Saturday and Sunday I expect. Not sure what I’ll start on, maybe another vehicle for the Panthers, maybe some Blackstone Fortress or Plague Marines or something I’ve forgotten that I’d primed!

Thanks for looking and the comments through all the WIP on these lads

Yeah, he’s a cool Marine alright. Thinking about it I think he might be the most senior painted Panther to date. I shall have to paint some officers soon

Yesterday was not that day though as I decided to make a start on my Stormtalon last night and tonight I finished the Techmarine pilot and the cockpit

I went with quite a dark red for the Techmarine and tried volumetric highlights on a non-metallic armour. It was quite a quick job, but he looks pretty decent behind the plastic windshield. I’ll have to mask him off before I prime the outside of the flyer. I might also see about printing some chapter icons for it, but I first need to figure out where to place them. I also need to decide what bits to do purple and what to do gold too. Any pointers?

You should be dead chuffed with the vets Gobert because they look excellent. That highlight colour on the black robes was a great idea, looks very mystical. The purple ties in with the secondary colour.

Stormtalon looks great too! My suggestion would be to do something similar to your landspeeder. Though I'm also tempted to say do the wings entirely in gold!

I really like the simple purple wash on the cockpit interior! Your pilot looks great. Nice job!

As for purple and gold, I suggest places like the recessed plates on the armor like those two spots just outside the cockpit and the forward trim around the missile pods. These spots should get the lesser color (either purple or gold, depending on what the dominate color will be). I also recommend painting the vehicle in the opposite scheme of the rest of your army - purple with gold instead of gold with purple - just to add variety to the visuals of the total. But also because that much gold may look jarring on large, flat surfaces. Just a suggestion, though, do as you will.

Thanks Olthannon, I am chuffed with the Vet Lads! The robes were definitely the highlight of the minis for me.
You’ll be pleased to hear that the land speeder is my template. I just need to figure out what bits will be black and gold as there’s not as many obvious places for each

Thanks warboss, I do like the purple wash over grey and this one just seemed to work so bad no touch up layers! Result! It was inspired by the inside of Sukuoi aircraft, but with purple to match my army. As for the outside, black will be the primary colour. I like the idea of going purple/gold on the bits by the cockpit, kinda like the white stripe on the Stormhawk on the box.

Ali had planned to prime the Stormtalon by now, but the icon prints didn’t come out right, so I changed tack and made a start on the Aliens: Another Glorious Day In the Corps minis. As suggested on here I tried some colour shift paints from instar. I tried all of them through the airbrush including some with different colours from above and below.

I’m not completely sold right now. It’s kinda cool, but annoyingly the one colour I really thought would work was green and they sold out! I’ve tried Nuln oil wash on some and i think that looks a bit better. I’ve got some more that I plan to dry brush to try to make look glossy. I’ll definitely give all of them some gloss finish too.

Having had success with the airbrush and the instar colour shift paints I decided to crack on sight the human side of the game.

I had mixed results here. My first mistake was not thinning my paint enough, getting lots of splatter. Broken bishop had his paint thinned too much but i think he turned out ok. When I switched to the power loader I ended up in a world of pain. First I figured I had a clog so took it apart, only to not clamp the needle . That created right mess, that lead to another full clean. Annoyingly I ended up getting more clogs, but I got it done in the end and I quite like it:

It’s much paler in real life so closer to the movie at least from the pics I’ve found. For all of these I’ve gone for quite a zenithal look and it seems to work pretty well. I’ll switch to old school hairy sticks for the rest, but it got some good base colours done. I’m looking forward particularly to the camo

Thanks for looking

Yeah, his ride is pretty cool and hopefully his console survives the priming of the outside! As for the colourshift I think I’ve improved the look, but honestly, they seem to be really thin metallics! The website says they’re meant to be additives, so maybe they’ll be better for things like power swords?

Last night I spent some time on the Xenomorphs. They all got a complete Nuln oil wash which seemed to help the definition. To help more I used the spectrum paints to dry brush in a bit of an OSL style which seems to work well. I even did some painted highlights to get an extra sheen. For some I did a second colour (see bottom left) which looks good in pics but a bit messy in real life. I also painted the aliens I missed first time around, i went more traditional with these guys and their queen, going for grey dry brushing followed by a black wash/contrast.

I think they all need to have a gloss finish, so I’ll get some ardcoat on them next all next

Thanks for looking

Olthannon wrote:The aliens look awesome! I bet the gloss varnish will finish the job nicely.

Thanks, I think it’s helped, but it makes it hard to photograph them

Another Grand Prix Sunday spent painting (Sainz was awesome all weekend). The Xenomorphs all got finished up (apart from the few I still haven’t built yet), just getting an all over ardcoat, doubled up on the heads. They’re all nice and shiny now and look pretty decent. From there all that was left was to put some Boltgun Metal on the raised areas of the bases then a bit of black round the rim. I’m not sure whether i should’ve done the top of the rim black too, but I got lazy and decided metallic was ok !

Here’s the pics, starting with the Queen.

The gloss makes her dead hard to photograph, but I think she looks ok, especially given I spent next to no time on her. I probably should’ve added some variation to a few areas and gone harsher on the drybrush highlights as they’re a bit too subtle after the black wash.

Here she is with her warriors

The colourshift ones are impossible to photograph so here’s a few of them all with the Queen

The blues are probably my favourite of the colourshifters

Purple are quite cool too

The Heroes and Grunts got a little attention, nothing exciting just painting their bases black:

This lot will be next on the queue, probably the camo of the Colonial Marines will win out and I’ll save Power Loader Ripley until last, but then again the next mini I finish will be number 100 so maybe I should do her next, or the Stormtalon. Nearly forgot my last pic there, Techy survived the prime!

I also added a few printed Panther icons. Annoyingly I filed them down to get a smooth surface, but might’ve filed them to the same depth as the recessed bits so I might have to do some free hand on them after all!

Thanks for looking

Loving those gribblies! The different colours are excellent. The different colours would look really good on Tyranids or Tzeentch daemons.

The cockpit colours are my favourite by far. That soft purple colour on the controls is ace. Did you get that affect with multiple washes?

Yeah, the colour shift paint would be great in some tzeentch daemons.. might have to add those to my wish list.
I’m really pleased how the cockpit turned out, usually I do a wash of Druchi violet over the primer and it goes all blotchy so needs a bit of grey mixed in to smooth out the panels. This time it was just single wash and it looked great!

Tommygun1918 wrote:The grim dark future needs more purple.

It sure does and I’ll be bringing it for some time to come! Welcome to my plog too!

So the next mini to be done will be number 100 for the year so I figured I’d do a special one who will be the Chapter Master for my Void Panthers. He’s the Terminator Captain front the old Start Collecting Space Marines box. He doesn’t come with a helmet option, so he’s the reason for the black vehicles; they mourn his loss after papa nurgle gets him! Remember kids, when purging heretics always bring your helmet! You never know what you’ll catch off them!

As he’s not yet fallen to nurgle his Tactical Dreadnought Armour is in the traditional Void Panthers gold, but since he’s special he got a few intermediate highlights, mixing the Retributor, Liberator and Stormhost together between pure layers. I quite like how it looks, seems a bit smoother than the sometime harsh differences on regular marines layers. I also did the basecoats on the Boltgun Metal bits as well as the Liche Purple and Black. His black parts will end up more purple than the Sternguard did though.

As he’s a special boy, here’s another WIP pic from the back

It’s amazing how quick a mini gets painted when you’re not painting the rest of a group! I might even finish him before I go away with work on Sunday.

Thanks for looking, and don’t forget those helmets!

he does have a head I promise! I went with layers instead of drybrushing, let me know what you think

Last night I made some more progress getting the blacks, purples, metallics, greens and skins ready. I even glued him together. Unfortunately I might have to remove his arm again as I now realise there is a purity seal that will be pretty much impossible to reach thanks to his stormbolter.

I like how his cloak is turning out, but I’m not yet sure on his power sword. I’ll try a spot of white on that and see what to do, but the glow is a bit rubbish and sloppy at the moment. I was quite pleased with his skin until I glued him in place and realised how similar in tone it is to his armour. What do you guys think? Should I redo them both?

I’m terms of stuff left there the purity seal scrolls and gold trim on his cape. I’m also planning an experiment with home printed transfers for him too. Hopefully it doesn’t ruin him totally!

My pile of shame grew again today, but only by 4 minis. The Lion arrived with his entourage of Azrael, Szeras, a psychomancer and a Ravenwing upgrade sprue.

Thanks for looking.

Boss. He's looking quite good. I think a touch of white will make the sword pop nicely. If you want to separate the head from the gold, a little more highlight and wash the recessed area around it heavily with a dark brown or black.

I tried a bit of white and I’m still not sure. I need to check in better light this weekend. That’s a good idea to wash the recessed area a bit more… wish I’d thought of it before I glued his head in place I’ll try to free it as I only used superglue it might pop out without damage.

Thanks Not Online, though I’d lazy isn’t a term I’d use to describe your painting. Efficient is more accurate I’d say! The layers can be much more time consuming, and not guaranteed to look good, so I’m glad they’ve gone down well

I’ve been away all week with work but I brought some minis to paint in my hotel room. I had planned to finish the Chapter Master, but I forgot to bring my decent brushes and the colours I needed so all he got was a dash of white on his sword (as youwashock suggested) and a second black coat on his base rim. I also forgot to take a pic and he’s now in my suitcase waiting for our plane.

Fear nought though, I brought another mini! The Stormtalon flew to Berlin with me along with some big brushes and the colours I needed to get all of the base colours and washes done.

I spied back through dakka at my https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1120323-Land%20Speeder%2C%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Void%20Panthers%2C%20Warhammer%2040%2C000.html" target="_new" rel="nofollow">Land Speeder and tried to copy the colour scheme. I think I matched pretty well but I’m not sure if I have too much purple and gold or whether to add purple to the tail flaps and/or more gold somewhere else?

Thanks for looking and let me know whether you think more is less or less is more!

Good rationale, I like it and as he’s a Tactical Squad Sergeant I’ll go with down. Cheers!

Elsewhere I’ve been busy on a few different things. I’ve kinda stalled on the Chapter Master as he doesn’t have a chapter symbol. I had hoped to try some custom transfers but the ink keeps dissolving in water even with some clear coat. I’ve been looking for someone to print some stick on icons, but so far have drawn blanks. So ive gone back to Oyumaru casts, trying a few different materials to see if there’s any that work better and give less clean up for my messy castings. I’ll report back when the results are in, but I suspect free stuff will win out.

I also did some more work on his sword as I wasn’t happy with attempt 1. Attempt 2 was worse so I stripped the sword and tried again. 3rd time isn’t lucky it seems but I don’t have the motivation for a 4th go. Maybe I’ll change my mind, but he’s pretty much done now so it’s unlikely.

Seeing the pics there were a few other things I did last week, namely another wash on his face (hardened leather speed paint) and the gold trim on his cape.

I think the darker tone on his head worked well and he now stands out better. I think I’m in love with his cape though, the gold trim just finishes it off nicely. I toyed with free handing something on there but I’m going to leave it alone now.

My printer has also been busy printing stuff for the Stormtalon base

The imperial eagle floor tiles came out pretty well and the hollow sub surface looks pretty cool even if the inside is a pain to paint! I think it ties in reasonably well with the legit Sector Imperialis stuff despite being much simpler.

The stormtalom itself got some love too, giving the canopy some paint. I started with a base of black as I didn’t want to use a wash for fear of it running. So far it’s not been highlighted, but I think it improves the look of the platform. I also used Ork skin on the canopy as a sort of Head Up Display (HUD)

I think the HUD turned out well, I might do a reticule and target dots too. I tried a few other speed paints on some clear plastic and I was really impressed how they all seemed to stain the surface without pooling. Another good use for them.

Whilst waiting for the base to dry i made a start on my next project; a pair of Greater Possessed for Blackstone Fortress. They came with a purple wash over Leadbelcher so I decided to roll with it and jut got stuck in basecoating the flesh and bones with Zandri dust;

They’re very detailed so this might take a while, but should be fun!

Thanks for looking

About the oyumaru, I'm actually in the same journey at the moment, I created a mold for primaris shoulderpads with the DA symbol. So far greenstuff + milliput has given me the best result, but it's a bit time consuming. Looking forward to know your results!

Thanks muette, I need to pluck up some courage to add images to the HUD. As for Oyumaru, I think GS & milliput is probably the best solution I think I need to add more GS to try to overcome the stickiness of the milliput. That said the flexibility of straight GS helps if I don’t get the alignment right first time. The Vallejo plastic putty seems to need air to set so was still goopy and the scale model filler seems to be a solvent and ruined the shoulder pads’ surface. The trick seems to be getting the quantity right; enough to fill the mould but not too much so it ends up too thick.
Olthannon wrote:Some fantastic work here Gobert. The cape on the terminator captain is immense. The talon looks great, really like the HUD idea.

Slinky wrote:Great progress, well done

Thanks Slinky, and I’ve even kept the progress up.

The Chapter Master is done, a good way to hit 100 minis for the year! Sword aside I think he’s pretty spiffy. Only update since the last pic is a GS chapter icon that took about 5 mins to paint, so much quicker than freehand aside from the faff of making it and the cure time… anyway, here he is:

For the curious his inscription on the shoulder pad is supposed to read inanis which Google tells me is Latin for empty or a void. Seemed quite appropriate as his Chapter will mourn his loss

Here’s a few action pics too

I think he looks pretty good leading the Panthers.

Next up I’ll be getting the Stormtalon done, but since I forgot them on the last post here’s the Greater Possessed

it’s enough to turn a Space Marine to Chaos! . I have to say, seeing the scenic Army shots with the Panthers makes me really glad I put the time in for their board.

Not sure what happened with dakka last night, but I couldn’t upload the Stormtalon progress shots. Mainly muted gold on the missile pods and engine cover fronts, white missiles and purple edge highlights on the black areas

The base got a heavier wash of Hardened Leather and Gravelord Grey Speed paints thinned with equal amounts of flow improver:

Helped a bit with the definition especially on the metallics.

Tonight was Uniform Grey edge highlights on the black and purple areas… oh my god we’re there a LOT of edges on this thing! I psyched myself up by starting with the gun mount, then the engines and finally the airframe.

I think it’s looking pretty smart and I’m looking forward to the finishing touches making those metallics shine

Thanks for looking!

Morning fellow dakkanauts,

It’s been a quiet week in the hobby front, with a few Tactical Marines being built for the Void Panthers great expansion. There’s a few cool additions thanks to Ragsta donating a few old marine bits to the cause (thanks mate!). I’ll get some pics when the unit is done, speaking of which I don’t think any of them got the mandatory purity seal so I’ll have to fix that!

Last night though I pushed on and got the Stormtalon finished up. There were a few edge highlights to tidy up as I’d rubbed off a few from handling. Weirdly the paint didn’t want to stick and kept pooling, must be something to do with the primer I used I guess? Good job I accidentally ordered too many colour forge cans this week I then got on with the lenses and green lights, going caliban, emerald and scorpion green before a white dot and gloss coat. I did a red light on the other wing like the land speeder has before hiding a purity seal somewhere it might have a chance of staying on. I finished up with the spot light on the front too.

Pretty pleased how she’s turned out, but wonder if I should have done a few fast attack markings somewhere? Here’s the whole mini including base

Looks pretty menacing from straight on I think

I also tried a bit more detail on the HUD with a cross hair a couple of targets and some writing in the top section

I probably should’ve cleaned the canopy though . I decent tip I read probably from someone on here is to use PVA to glue the canopy down to avoid the frosting from superglue. Good tip!

Finally, it wouldn’t be a finished Void Panther miniature without a group photo!

Here she is giving covering fire to the Jump Pack Assault Marines

And of course the boss needs help sometimes too

And finally a wider shot of most of the Panthers

Thanks for looking!

I need to finish up the last 4 chaps and snap the new squad. Can’t recall we were soldiers, I’ll have to watch it again… classic war movie painting marathon once the f1 season is done? Suggestions welcome from all.
DoctorDanny wrote:Looking good again man! Question: what paint do you use for the 'muted gold' effect on the engine parts of the stormtalon?
Impressive shiny army so far!

Thanks Danny. The muted gold had a base of Retributor Armour, a wash of Nuln oil then a dry brush of a really old citadel paint called shining gold.

Sorry for being quiet on here recently, it’s been busy with bathroom fitters and diy. I did manage to sneak a few hours on Sunday night though and made some progress on the Greater Possessed from one of the White Dwarf Blackstone Fortress expansions. Had a bit of fun with various washes over Zandri dust for the skin bones and claws, using a combo of Pallid bone speed paint, old citadel flesh wash and red wash along with druchi violet. Each applied when the previous layer still wasn’t dry. The bones then got various bone coloured paints and the skin got reducing mixtures of washes in pallid wych flesh. So far the gold and metallics have just had a Nuln and Agrax wash respectively.

The gold will get some highlights, possibly a yellower version than the Panthers get. I’m also wanting to try some Flourescent paint I got recently so some recesses will probably get that along with the many eyes in their armour. I might play with some super glue gore and Blood For The Blood God too. Their bases have already been printed I just need to prime them and get them painted too.

Thanks for looking

Superglue blood? Colour me intrigued, that was always something i wanted to do but always forgot to research.

Looking savagely chitinous. Crabby is especially cool-looking. Have fun experimenting!

Thanks, it’s dead simple too! The superglue blood is pretty easy, just a bit of PVA and blood effect of your choice, then a dab of superglue and mix with a stick and draw it out…. Annoyingly it seems my current gorilla glue doesn’t do that! Will need to buy some other type
youwashock wrote:Looking savagely chitinous. Crabby is especially cool-looking. Have fun experimenting!

Thanks, chitinous was the look I wanted!

Thanks Olthannon, the glue gore will have to wait though

I managed a bit more painting last night and finished highlighting the gold. I then decided to try the flour paint. A few people on instagram and YouTube seem to base coat white first, so that’s what I did:

I let the white overlap the main areas that I wanted to glow and I think it looks a bit sloppy in places. My main problem is that it is now quite hard to see the definition on the surrounding areas. Next I need to get the bases ready. I might go green for those too

Thanks for looking

Nice. I don't think it looks bad or sloppy. If you are concerned, you can go back and hit the highpoints with white or some other highlight to push the contrast and define some of the edges again.

Thanks youwashock, in the end I decided I was t unhappy enough to redo anything and will instead try to remember my mistakes for next time. After all a completed mini is better than a half finished mini!

Following the flouro there wasn’t much but the bases of these guys to do. Green glow seemed the most appropriate so went through my usual greens (caliban, emerald and striking scorpion) adding in a bit of for at the end the. A bit of white for some sharper bits. I couldn’t get the glue gore to work so just daubed Blood For The Blood God all over their claws and hands

And as is traditional here are the turning around shots of the two of them on a BSF tile

I really like this top down one for some reason, maybe how the base and tiles look together?

I think they look pretty cool, and I do enjoy the Blackstone Fortress bases, so simple, fun and good looking! I do think they look better on their display shelf though

And lurking beneath some Traitor Guardsmen

I finished them fairly early so started on another Blackstone Fortress mini, the Deathwatch Captain featured in White Dwarfs Xenos Hunter Army of One rules.

Nothing special yet, but I fancy the bluish shade for the silver but not sure what blue to use. I only have old school blue wash or making my own from something like enchanted blue? He should probably be a Panther but his icon area is pretty tiny so might have to rethink that one?

Thanks for looking

Thanks youwashock, I am loving the action pics at the minute too. I think that the BSF shelves have some added cool with their clear floor

Thanks Olthannon, the bases are fun to do and green looks great on them
muette wrote:Great Great Possessed!! Loving the shiny green, perfect contrast with the purple armor and the pale skin.

thanks muette, the purple armour turned out pretty well, the speed paint worked well to give a darker lining to the panels to boost that contrast too.

Did a bit on the Deathwatch Watch Master today. I snook I the blue and Nuln washes during the day so I could get on with the dry brushing of the arm. I then cleaned up the black and gold giving the latter a Nuln wash too. The black armour got a on edge highlight before I decided to do the fun bit and painted the cloak. For that I started with khorne red then highlights of Mephiston then Evil Sunz. I’m now getting ready for the inside of the cloak and his face which have a Zandri dust base for now

And because I’m particularly pleased with his cloak another WIP shot

I think there are bits of the mini that would’ve benefitted from stripping as it’s become clearer that some areas of the previous owners paint job were a bit thicker than they originally looked. As a result my edge highlighting has been a bit naff. I’m also a bit underwhelmed by the plain grey I used. I did start out with a blue mixed in but it was impossible to see.

Next session will be highlights on the gold and painting the skin and parchments. I also need to decide how to paint his axe. The box art has a cool turquoise lightning effect so I might give that a try. I had planned for him to be a Void Panther, but I might see if I have a tiny transfer for his shoulder pad, or maybe he just gets a freehand i?

Thanks for looking

Thanks meet cat, and yeah it took a while on the hem, but outlining it with contrast then highlighting it took longer!
Olthannon wrote:Great work on the cloak, shading is really nice. Like the idea of the turquoise axe, good luck!

Thanks Olthannon, I’m beginning to look forward to the axe as I seemed to do almost everything else but that tonight!

More progress was made in the Watch Master. I did lots of little things from picking out rivets in silver to touching up the black, outlining the icons on his cape, neatening up some of the black areas, highlighting his skin and painting his beard and plenty of layers in skulls and parchments. He also got a transfer from an ancient ultra marines sheet and some lettering on his parchment. And he looks similar to the last pics

The dark grey outline on the hem design seems to reflect the lights in this pic

And this one too, but it looks nice in some parts

First time using microset and microsol and seem to have got some wrinkles still ! Still think it looks ok. Anyone know the chapter I went with? I was hoping I had some red Roman numerals to put an I in each corner of the inside of his cloak, but sadly not. Might freehand them instead?

Thanks for looking

The Watch Master is coming along great! That's Sons of Orar, isn't it?

Microsol needs a good few coats to work its magic, at least for me. And if there's still some stubborn wrinkles, you can scratch them off with a knife and use paint to fix the damage. Matt varnish can help you with the Contrast/Shade paints' shiny spots (though I seem to often get some spots that just won't dull down no matter what...). And go for the freehand!

Good knowledge! It is Sons of Orar, they were the only chapter that fitted with the small transfer I had . Thanks for the microsol tips, I just gave it one good soaking but will try a few next time. I also was a bit shy smoothing it down as the transfer is about half my age! as for the Matt varnish, I think I have some Matt medium for exactly this task but I always forget about it!

He is a bit, must be the beard and life dedicated to servitude! Freehand is done!
endtransmission wrote:The Watchmaster is looking fantastic! The reds on the cloak are really rich

Thanks endtransmission, I’ve been enjoying the cloaks of late, I think I’m getting close to finding the best process that works for me.

Finished off the Watch Master whilst watching the Vegas GP, good job I only had a few bits left as it was a great race! I did freehand some I’s on the cloak and tabard, they were quite fun apart from the one hiding behind the spear pole . In the end I didn’t do much highlighting on the gold as I quite liked the slightly subdued finish. The lightning on his blade was fun too, it’s not perfect, but it has a decent glow to it

I’m pleased with the blue tint on his arm and shoulder pad, it didn’t come out so well on his chest and legs though

The I hem was fun and one of my favourite bits on the mini

Getting the white background seems to have washed out the reds a bit on the cloak

He was a fun little project, getting him done quickly was great too. On the shelf he faced off against Greater Possessed

I didn’t quite get the focus right on this one, but the terrain in the back looks cool so I included it

Next I’ll pop back to some Void Panthers, but this time it’ll be some 1st Company action with a mix of small Terminators and Space Marine Heroes Series 2. I might break my one project at a time rule and do some Aliens:AGDITC minis to get that game playable.

Thanks for looking

Sorry for not replying, will get to that later after some painting. I’m trying to decide if the pose on this terminator is cool or derpy? His power fist will be converted to a chainfist like the heavy flamer dude (needs a bit of filling to match the official aesthetic still). I’m trying to give him a throwing a chain punch kinda pose, with such momentum his stormbolter arm has swung out. It might look better with different legs where he’s leaning to his left? Dunno! Honest feedback appreciated (don’t spare my feelings! )

Conceptually, I think you are good. The upper body is looking right, but I think you are correct in revisiting the legs. A different pair might sell it a little more.

Definitely a cool pose, I'd maybe tilt the bolter and arm further down so it looks more at rest/ clearly not in use. Love the concept, some dynamism in otherwise static heavy looking minis should look great.
