I agree with youwashock, in the last group shot it looks like shadows collecting naturally in the folds - as you say, they are not very deep, so the lighter grey shadow works (for me).

For my CSM, I wanted to do a white that was very clean-looking, I ended up doing white primer, Asurmen Blue, then several thin coats of Corax White. It ended up being an intense time investment for regular troops, and if I did too many coats it ended up a bit chalky. White is very difficult! This is why I started painting things that were not Chaos Space Marines!

Yeah I really quite like the white, in the picture at least it looks quite natural!

Those barded horses were always shallow, but I agree with everyone else that it looks great. Three hours is a labour of love and together the unit is nearly done and is looking excellent together.

Ezki wrote:Painting white is always a pain. I understand the feeling when you lose the will to continue, especially after painting so much white.

Did you use a white primer? If I'm to paint white, that's usually my way of cheating.
I also tend to avoid pure white, and paint the areas with Ulthuan Gray for example, then highlight the highest parts with pure white.
An off white color looks a bit more natural in larger areas and the coverage is slightly better.

However, in my opinion they are looking quite good already!

It sure is a pain, I’d forgotten just how much! I did use white primer, I don’t think I could manage doing white over black primer! I think on my last Spearmen I stopped at Ulthuan Grey which didn’t look too bad. Once I added the white on the horses though it just seemed crazy dark. I’ll see how I go next time around.

youwashock wrote:Up close the transition may seem harsh, but in the pictures it looks good.

Thanks man, the picture is a bit over exposed on the white which makes it look much brighter than in real life. The white is a little patchy, but I might be able to live with that.

That’s some bright CSMs! They look really cool, but I can see why you didn’t do more . I think some of the folds may actually have natural shadows, it’s hard to photograph the white ponies against my black cutting mat!
Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll wrote:Yeah I really quite like the white, in the picture at least it looks quite natural!

Thanks Gwyn, it looks much better in the photos than RL. It’s quite blotchy, but it’s medieval style cloth so imperfections are bound to be present even for Elven fabrics. Right?
ListenToMeWarriors wrote:Those barded horses were always shallow, but I agree with everyone else that it looks great. Three hours is a labour of love and together the unit is nearly done and is looking excellent together.

Thanks, I’m certainly beginning to fall back in love with them after they pushed me to the edge!

Enough talk of white, I got the paint sticks out again tonight and actually had some fun. I tidied up the inside of each of the horses Caparison with Celestra Grey. I followed that with a bit of Bassilicanim Greg Contrast 2:3 with Contrast Medium. It was tricky and for something that no one will see, quite a bit of effort. Next up o tried to paint the Champions steed. She was already a Grey, so I went with that but added a bit more interest with Socks and a dark tail. I also made an attempt at a Blaze. Getting a pattern on the horse was pretty tricky as theres not much on show.

Keeping with the one horse at a time I decided to crack on with the unicorn. She got a bleached bone layer to cover up the dry brushing overspill. I then decided to apply Seraphim Sepia to the recesses and mane.

Applying the wash it really stuck me what a beautiful sculpt this is, a very regal pose, kind of like you’d see in a coat of arms or on a wind vane on a palace. Sadly it was too late to press on with highlights, they’ll have to wait until next time

Thanks for looking!

Very cool work so far and I like your dedication to painting all the bits no one will ever see! And love the symbol on the horse's head, is this freehand?
Nice color on the unicorn, good contrast to the normal horses. And with those mad red eyes it fits the description of the unicorns in Discworld novels.

Aye, that Unicorn is just one of those classic sculpts that work, iirc wasn't it Marauder miniatures rather than GW? Not that I ever fully understood the difference. Even pre highlights it is popping nicely already.

Edit, here is the write up on Marauder:

http://solegends.com/marauder/index.htm

The image on unicorn was MM83, not so close to being WW84.

Ha! Yeah quite a bit is hard to see underneath the caparison, but equally quite a bit can be seen from low down to the sides. The Horses head does have a freehand symbol, though it looks like I might have to fix the SW leg of the symbol.

Yeah, it’s a Marauder Miniature, thanks for finding the SOL entry. I’m not sure where MM came from or went, the SOL entry talks about it being set up by/for the Morrison’s but with no clear reason for creation/disappearance. Great miniature anyway, even Mrs gobert thinks it looks cool

Good work gobert.

White is a hard color to do if you start with it as the base...as there really is no where to go with highlights. So using the grey or tan has worked out for both models.

Cheers,

Very nice free hand on horsie's head. And the unicorn is coming along nicely too.

But how do the elves get their horses garments so brilliantly white? Some say it's the Detergent of Untarnished Reputation, but an ancient legend tells of a cleaning agent more powerful still, the Bleech of Blemishless Virtue!

Now I want to see a magical elf washing machine. Because naturally, elves aren't going to wash their clothes by hand. How vulgar!

Well then you get into the realm of elf washing machine repair mages and more amazing still, elf extended warranty call centre staff in a tower filled with palantir cubicles. Or maybe they're run by dark elves with a bank of slaves taking the calls. Now I want to see someone use a runaway killer washing machine as a counts as Dark Elves Hydra.

Yeah, I tried to use Ulthuan grey but the white is still tough

Thanks theCrowe, the elves haven’t revealed how they make their garments so white. I did hear tell of a famed wash mistress, Lenor

Sadly there was no washing machine in the 4th edition range, but I imagine the Repeater Bolt Thrower might double as the drying rack of a thousand febreezes.

And thus Slaanesh was borne unto the Old World, all because some cheeky Elf tried to make a false claim on the extended warranty
Yorkright wrote: Calvary looks good man, the freehand on the horse is exceptional. I too want to see the magical elf washing machine. :-)

Thinking about it I might have one of those Empire Hellblaster Volley Cannons, perhaps it can be adapted to take a load of washing?

A good evening of painting tonight, Uni got pretty much finished and is looking even more heraldic now she’s a bit closer to being white. I ended up just mixing gradually more white in to the old bleached bone I have then finishing with a few spots of white. I think she looks pretty decent, though I think I could’ve done better on one of the haunches.

All that’s left is the hooves, I’m thinking of transitioning from their current grey down to black, possibly going paler at the top of the hoof too. I may shod her with horse shoes of disdain too. What do you guys think?

I also made progress with one of the horses too. Again I tried some boots, this time Basilicanum grey of Ushabti Bone. The horses are quite fun but being mostly Caparison I’m limited to patterns on their noses. I’ll have to try something fun when I finally get to the Chariot!

Just the silver bit and hooves to do on this pony and it’ll be done, though I might try some freehand on the Caparison. Maybe a stripe on the bottom with an elven rune perhaps?

Thanks for looking

unicorn looks mega. Very mythical.

Horsies are very clean and white but here's an idea you should feel free to totally ignor.

Spoiler:
I wonder could you get away with a very fine light grey filigree of runes etc over the white caparisons. I know it would be a time sucking endeavour but it would manage an element of fine craftsmanship into the the otherwise plain areas without killing the super white look too much. You might even be able to accent down the grey in the recessed areas for extra contrast.

Cheers theCrowe, I like the idea but I’ve not gone full blown filigree. I even shaded some bits of the markings!

Thanks Ezki, Uni has been really fun to paint, I’m glad you like the paintjob!

So this evening was spent with the painting sticks and the horses. Each of them got either a shade of Ushabti Bone or Grey. They all got at least one boot, either dark or light. Having read theCrowe’s suggestion I switched my plan from Runes in blue to bluish grey. Each horse got a different rune, I probably should’ve written down what they mean;

I even did a stripe around the bottom which got the aforementioned shade. The hooves got an Agrax wash to distinguish from the fur. I then remembered to do the Horseshoes of Aloof Disdain;

Some of them were really hard to get to, but I managed decent enough for most. That’s the horses done I think. I’m pretty happy with them, though looking at the pics I realise that the symbols should’ve followed the shape of the Caparison... I’ll just call it Elven magic that they’re just projected on to the surface and done move with the fabric The riders will be next, most just need the odd touch up, but Mage and Standard Bearer need more work.

In other news I branched out to terrain this afternoon. The kids were doing some crafting so I thought I’d do some of my own. I’ve had the idea to make a little display board for the Void Panthers so bought some Sector Imperialis ruins a while back. It’s pretty cool how modular they are, great job GW! I plan to make a road between 2 ruined buildings but will tile the interiors and have found some packaging that looks a bit like tread plate.

I’ll make a few casts of interesting features on Sector Imperialis bases and probably the more intact ruin pieces so I can place them as debris. If I do a bit here and there I might have it ready for paint over Christmas. We’ll see.

Thanks for looking

darkkt wrote:Nice set up on that display board terrain - what size is this? Armies on Parade size or larger?

I can’t recall the exact size, but it’s about 2ft x 1ft, so about half an AoP board I think. I might be expanding my shelves at some point so I should look to make it modular. As for the time, I blame you and your tiling! Mine are just snips of card so may not work as well.
Maharg wrote:Nice progress on the silver helms, the freehand looks great and breaks up the white nicely without taking over. Your Void Panthers are well deserving of a display board, look forward to the finished piece

Thanks Maharg, the freehand was actually fun, not as nerve wracking as I was expecting! It might take a while for the board to come together, but hopefully at some point relatively soon it’ll be done
theCrowe wrote:Really spot on with the gray runes. Perfectly simple and nicely judged.

Cheers man, the grey seems to work well, probably better than the blue I had planned, so thanks! As for Lenor, I figured I couldn’t compete with your writing, so I’d go for bad pun Instead!

With the ponies done I spent some time on the riders. Only a short painting session so I concentrated on tidying up the reds, with them also getting the flesh/red wash treatment. The Mage and standard also got theirs done.

The previously painted bunch are nearly done now, just a bit of white, silver and fleshy bits to tidy up. I’ll do the standard and Mage at a the same time but they have a few other bits to do too. I didn’t want to start another colour, so grabbed the terrain. I cleaned mould likes and glued 2 of the ruins together.

I tried to use the squares in my mat to get them roughly at right angles. It’s a really cool kit this and so modular. If I do expan the board I’ll have to get a bigger ruin

Thanks for looking

Hey DJJazzyJeff, thanks for the very kind words. This month marks 2 years back in the hobby and I’m glad I got back in to it (see the first post for the context of the bad pun!). I’ve had a few projects that drained the motivation, but it’s been the interaction on here, particularly through 2020 that has helped me stick with it. So thanks guys, it’s a great community here in the Dakka P&M section, I’m pleased to be a small part of!

No progress updates today but whilst Mrs Gobert and littlest Gobert were out today, biggest mini Gobert and I got out Space Marine Adventures and played levels 1 & 2. We both had a great time winning both rounds but only just escaping in time on the second. She wanted to use the painted minis rather than the ones from the box, so plasma dude stood in as flamed dude and Missile launcher dude pretended to have a Heavy Bolter. I also got my painted Necrons out to join the fun, but had to use tokens for the Immortals and Amy he Guard. She enjoyed it so much she asked to play again, I guess I’ll have to paint up Grimm, Infernus and some more Necrons soon!

Yeah, it was super cute, she really got in to it. We’d tried Blackstone Fortress during lockdown 1, but i was learning the rules so it took too long. This one was just right for a 7 year old.

Tonight I got the silver helms done, and I must say, a wave of nostalgic pride came over me as I lined them up all finished. Though it now occurs to me that I forgot the hair on one or two of them! Tonight’s work was mainly neatening up 20year old paint and getting the Standard Bearer and Mage up to scratch. I know it’s bad form not to make gems on High Elves shiny, It’s what I’ve done on most of my others. These guys got better treatment though, but not on their shields as I like to think they’re just metal anyway. It was too late at night to set up my camera, so here’s a couple of phone shots. Better ones soon I promise

So minor tweaks notwithstanding, that’s these guys done. Not sure what I’ll do next, probably a BSF Escalation character to cleanse the palette.

Thanks for looking!

It'll be all White on the Knight.

Hey mate,
Elves look brilliant - lovely crisp work on the whites, looking forward to more angles!

Really warmed my heart to read about you playing with your daughter. That's pure goodness and a double win that you get to bring your army dudes out - the Necrons look like suitably sinister adversaries to the Void Panthers.

Great work as always

The horses look awesome. The white is very clean and shiny, but the runes and trim lines really add an element of depth that is exceptional.
That unicorn is fire.

The display terrain seems like it will be a neat project. I'm envisioning the Void Panthers strutting about it in their golden finery. It looks great in my head.

Solid work. Keep at it!

I get it now. Back into it.
Treasure those moments, with the minis. They grow way too fast.
Love it.

Thanks man, whilst I love the unicorn, I think the Mage doesn’t quite match the high elf aesthetic to me. Who cares though when your unicorn is that cool!

No new pics just yet, I’m kinda not looking forward to the camera photos as it’ll show up all of the blotchy-ness of the whites! . It was fun to play with her, certainly pitched at being accessible to a younger audience than Blackstone Fortress.

That sucks, they seem to have taken it oop with the rise of the Orks game starting. I think that one had a wider distribution iirc. I expect the mechanics are similar

Thanks turtles, games with the kids are great fun, especially when it captures their imaginations. Fingers crossed this vaccine brings back some semblance of normality at some point.

So, I got out the Salamander and Imperial Fist from Space Marine Adventures the other day. During a meeting today I was preparing them for priming and got to thinking that I should convert/kit bash my other Space Marine Heroes duplicates. I’m at a bit of a loss for the guys who have their shoulder pads connected to their torsos.

I started with the Sergeant who has his left pad attached to the torso. The simplest conversion would be to switch his weapons and keep his pose. I had toyed with him having the at of the guy with the scoped bolt pistol, but I think it would be a struggle and his torso is at a funny angle. I reckon my best bet is a power fist and a raised plasma pistol changing him to look left instead of right

First iteration

His power fist is out of position as I haven’t done any cutting yet. I’m not convinced by this one but he has a bit of a 2nd Ediiton Sgt feel to him I think.
Double gun wielder appears to be in MkVI armour so he got a chest plate, helmet and shoulder pad to match. I’ll be swapping his bolt pistol to a Bolter in due course

I have limited unarmed left hand options so he gets a second edition vintage arm and knife, probably pointing it down.

Running dude seemed to fit a pointy arm, but I’m not convinced about his right arm pose. It feels rather odd when you adopt it yourself, but in the pics he looks ok.

He swapped base, so I’ll need to cast the other bit of his foot at some point. I did this for a few of them. Hopefully I can get it right!

Bolter hugger and magazine changer got their arms swapped and different chest plates too

I think these two work quite well, but need their feet sorting out!

I’ll then use my start collecting box to build up three more for a compete squad, possibly using bits of SMH arms etc.

Thanks for looking

I’ll try, may get a game in on Sunday.

A bit more kit bashing went on tonight, taking them from blue tac to mostly glued (apart from helmets and backpacks. I think most of the poses are different enough. I’ll have to do a side by side with the originals to compare. I also made moulds of the missing bits of foot so I could trim them off the bases. I also added some texture to the bases to give a little variation. Not sure how they’ll look once primed but we’ll see.

CommissarKhaine wrote:Nice kitbashing. Anything to make marines a bit more individual looking!

Thanks CommissarKhaine, they’ve been slow but fun so far. I’m not overly looking forward to the vanilla marines as they really are all the same, I hadn’t realised how spoiled I was with the SMH kits!

I spent a bit of time this evening sorting out 3 vanilla marines to join the squad. I found as many SMH bits as I had remaining to get them tweaked away from standard. Frustratingly there was no right hands to take a Auspex or even empty hands, so I had to sub in another 2nd Ed hand. This one will be bare so might be more noticeable. I did find an auspex in a bits collection I bought but it was metal and had lots of bits all over it, so I’m not sure how to use it. These 3 are much more bland than the SMH guys I think, but I guess it was only to be expected

Anyways, thanks for looking

Thanks man, the squad will be standard tactically, but they’ll not be getting banners for the sergeants. I’ve got a few random bits but I need to strip most of them as the paint is pretty thick.
youwashock wrote:Cool looking group, gobert. I like the classic powerfist Sarge.

Thanks youwashock, raised power fist is pretty classic right?

Whilst watching the F1 tonight I finished up the kitbashes (though I ought to add som pouches to the vanilla boys. I swapped a couple of arms and heads, filed a few joints and drilled their barrels, but not much else changed. Though I decided to fill the empty hand with a trophy as I found what looks like a Dark Eldar head with a top knot that would double as a hand hold. It probably needs some gore adding to the neck so I’ll try the PVA and super glue trick that I’ve seen. Whilst I don’t have Blood For The Blood God, I have what appears to be Army Painter equivalent, so I’ll give that a go.

Sadly the building works are occupying my priming spot so it’ll probably be a couple of weeks before they can be primed. So In preparation for my next paint project I based the first 3 Necron Scarabs. They’ll hopefully be a quick project followed by some Blackstone Fortress: Escalation adventurers.

Thanks for looking

Thanks CB, I’ll get there in the end!

As alluded to above I realised I had more bashing to do on these guys. I need to check I’ve included suitable grenades and pouches yet, but it remembered to sort out their chapter and squad markings. I even made some more purity seals with my left over resin. Still a fair bit of casting to go! I might try to make a few more moulds to speed up the process. Thanks Don, it’s only been out of necessity as the 2nd Ed arms are very lacking in detail compared to the new kit, hopefully they’ll be hard to spot under some paint!
CommissarKhaine wrote:Looking good, and the guy holding the head in the previous posts seems to have worked out nicely, well done!

Thank, he’s surprised me, and is now the first all marked up marine. I just need to reattach the head and do some gore.

I did a bit more casting tonight getting the next 2 Panther icons done and another Tac marking, along with more bits for bases and the display board.

Seeing as I couldn’t do any more with the Marines I got to work on the Scarabs. In fact I finished them in one sitting! A first for me to finish a unit in a day, I’m taking it as a win even if they’re the smallest and simplest unit I can think of! Nothing special on them, basically just following the Necron Warrior scheme from before

Yep, those are great. Really love the colour scheme on these guys, sells the otherworldly cosmic horror aspect of the Necrons really well. I think they have just the right amount of glow and I might be biased on this one but I love the snow bases. Thematically matches the army - cold and calculating - and just works really well with the palette. Lovely work mate!

Ha! Yeah, when you put it like that it seems like more effort than it actually is. The eye was a ring of sybarite green followed by a dot of gauss blaster. The orb was similar, except the gauss blaster was watered down to be a wash, once dry it got Abaddon Black and Aardcoat. Probably took 30mins inc drying (I wasn’t that patient between colours!

I planned to do some painting this evening but instead got to work on the Void Panther-isation of my Kitbashes SMA & SMH/Tac Marines. I decided that the casts of the pad I made and the one that theCrowe kindly made for me were too big, so I recast them with much less Oyumaru. Whilst I was at it I made a matching number of Tactical Squad Arrows. It turned out that was enough to finish the squad, except the MkVI chap needed a chapter icon for his right shoulder pad. So I inverted my original image and remade the original cast. I’m hoping they will work for the Terminators I have as well.

I then cracked on with cleaning up the icons that I cast earlier in the week. Some were easier than others, but all got there in the end

I think they look pretty cool with both styles of icon.

Once I’d done with them I gathered all the bits I’d cast for the display board

I’m liking how the SMH bases came out, they’ll make for interesting bits on the floors of the buildings.

I fancy taking a stab at 150 for the year, so I’ll need to get my paint on over the holiday period.

Thanks for looking

Ha! That sounds like a plan for post pile of shame adventures! The terrain could be real ginger bread houses, that take “damage” through the game! In reality though, they are the casts for my Void Panther chapter icons and squad markings as these boys will be joining the Gold & Purple gang.
Yorkright wrote: Go go Gobert I believe in you to get to 150 for the first year! Everytime I see those marines with the casting on them I am thinking GW should come out with a line of Marine Candies. Blood Orange flavored Blood Angels, Mint flavored Salamanders, Blue Berry flavored Ultramarines.

Yeah, the Oyumaru looks pretty tasty, I’m sure GW will make sweets at some point, they’re already branching out to toys.

So the Panthers aren’t going to see paint this year as I’ll never get them and 10 other things done within December. As a result I’m changing pace and working on 2nd Edition Ghaz and the Boyz I rebased earlier in the year. Joining them are some 2nd Edition Stormboyz, if you’ve not seen them before, be warned, they have a proper SS vibe about them.

About half of the box set Ladz are already 90% done but may get a few colour tweaks to remove the twins. The other half need painting fully. With Orks I recall starting with the skin, so that’s what I did. Warboss Green in place of goblin green, but then back to the classics, work Flesh Wash then dry brushes of Warboss, Sunburst Yellow and finally Bad Moon Yellow. I think in the past I did them quite heavily in yellow, but the new boys are a bit darker.

Whilst waiting for the wash though I slapped on some Administratum Grey on the Stormboyz uniforms and a liberal all over of Aqrax. They’re certainly looking closer to the SS now, than the sky blue uniforms young go dry had given them! I should probably rebase them too.

To finish up, I slapped on some brown, red and pale Grey to the new boyz. I’ll carry that on and expand some of the colours to the old ladz at the next sitting.

Oh and this afternoon I managed to tidy up the casts on the Panthers

Great work gobert. Dedicated to detail as ever. Looking forward to seeing the green wave advance in time for the new year. Maybe screaming waaaagh! as you paint will speed you over the finish line. Or maybe painting red helps it go faster?

Hope you find some time to enjoy some painting over Christmas whatever you get done anyway. Have a merry one.

Second edition orks were best orks. Swarms of those little guys with choppers give prime oldhammer feels.

Scarabs look great! The cold, silver light fits right in with the snow bases.

Those classic orcs look very cool, good to see them get a new lease on life.
Panthers are looking really cool with their padded out pads and nice work on the scarabs. They are nasty little bug(ger)s, as I have found out in my matches against my friend. They can tie stuff up quite nicely.

I’ll have to lay off the Waaghs as I tend to paint when the kids are in bed! they’ll definitely be getting a bit of red on ‘em. They’ve been fun so far and Ghaz is even quite enjoyable so far. Merry Christmas to you and yours too!

They really are cool! Some of them have a few mods with newer chopper and slugga arms. The older ladz got a few SM bits too then with slightly different paint jobs there should be no 2 Boyz the same.
MegaDave wrote:Orks are looking good! My uncle used to have a ton of those stormboys, I remember them hopping all over the table just to get shot to pieces!

Hey Dave, I vaguely remember playing them in 2nd where they’d also zoom off in random directions iirc, it really added a bit of fun to the Orks!
Yorkright wrote: I’m really enjoying the old school Orks, choppy boys and back banners was all the rage when I started playing 40k. Are you planning on doing MiniGhaz’s banners?

Yeah, you’ve got to love some back banners! I think I made them from cocktail sticks too for added authenticity. I’m not sure on Ghaz getting a banner, it might cover some nice details on his back. We’ll see...

Cheers Viterbi, the Panthers pads came out pretty well in the end. It’s certainly easier to do the clean up on unpainted minis! I haven’t played 40k since 2nd, but it’s good to know the scarabs work well if I do ever get to play

Stepping back to last nights painting, it was mainly getting the base coats down; Khorne Red, Regal Blue, Administratum Grey, Dawnstone, Zandri Dust, Leadbelcher and Ghaz got some bling in Retributor Gold. I then went to town with loads of Agrax Earthshade. Instead of going to bed at that point I did highlights/scratches with Leadbelcher. Here’s the pic again because we all like pictures!

Thanks for looking

Nice work with the oyamaru. I would never have thought to just leave it on the shoulder like that - I would have thought it would just have tumbled off. Did you stick it there, somehow, or does it stay by itself?

It depends how wet I make the tool I use to press the milliput in to the mould. It’s pretty light stuff, so if I get it right it stays and sticks, otherwise it falls off as I trim the excess! Even if it falls off, the inside matches the shape of the pad so it super glued back on pretty nicely. It’s pretty cool stuff though

Cheers Don, hopefully you still like the red now I’ve done the second highlight.

I hope you all had a good Christmas if you celebrate it. Ours was different, but the kids seem to be happy with it all. Santa not having to quarantine seems to have helped! Mrs Gobert wanted to watch the sewing bee on TV so I selflessly volunteered to head to the office for some hobby time!

I spent the first half finishing the new Boyz and Ghaz, they’re not a complex paint job but I enjoyed doing the checks. I then moved on the the bases , so far just Army Painter Wet Mud and a wash of Agrax Earthshade. There’ll just be flock, puddles and tufts to do before they’re done. Like I say, nothing special but they look ok en masse

Anyways, thanks for looking;

Yeah, I used quite a bit of yellow on them back in the day, probably more of an over brush than a dry brush, but I like it!
CommissarKhaine wrote:Had to zoom in to properly appreciate them, nice work!

Yeah, there’s a few of them to squeeze in the shot. I’ll get my camera out once their done so you can appreciate the sloppiness of the paint job!

Vietnorks sound awesome, I’ll stalk our gallery to see what I can see! I often say this about 8 sessions before stuff is actually done, but hopefully I’ll finish them at my next painting session. Though I now recall that I hadn’t put the Khorne symbol on any of them! I might do the odd transfer too somewhere.

The kids wanted some mini guys for Christmas, but they haven’t painted the ones I bought months ago, so I primed up some Orks and Dwarfs for them. This time they are white primed to help them get brighter colours. Whilst I was out side and literally before the heavens opened I got some primer on the Panthers’ new recruits

Thanks youwashock, the Panthers will be first off the blocks in the New Year, though i may do their board first, or do a hobby tidy up, dunno, will see how the mood takes me!
Arakasi wrote:Looking forward to some close up shots of those Orks when you are done (or before, I'm not fussy).

Your wish is my command!

Managed a bit of hobby time tonight, spent the first half finishing the Orks, then the second half taking pics. As i noted in my last post, the Orks just needed their bases doing, that consisted of a highlight ot Wet Mud, then flocking, puddle creation then tufts on some of them. I would've done the rims in black but i'm all out, so need to make a purchase soon. I also threw on a few transfers, which took a while as they're all 20+ years old! So without further ado, here's the pics;
Old 2nd Ed boxset Slugga Boyz
New 2nd Ed boxset Slugga Boyz
These lads were pretty basic so only front on pics. I think they look pretty effective all bunched up and the transfers and check pattern have added a bit of detail along with some minor kitbashing on the newer lads for some more variety.
2nd Ed Stormboyz
Again, nothing exciting about these apart from how un-PC they are, more pics in the spoiler
Spoiler:

So that lot brought me to 150 minis for the year, so I'm calling 2nd Edition Ghaz 151 and my final completed mini for 2020!
2nd Ed Ghaz
I spent a bit more time on Ghaz, doing multiple layers on his checks and skulls and reds. I wasn't sure how he was going to come out, but seeing the pics i'm pretty happy. Not my best work, but a mix of 20 year old paint and today ended up pretty decent I think. More pics in the spoiler;
Spoiler:

And seeing as we all like group pics;

It's late so i need to go to bed, but i've taken a few pics for a year in review post, though it's more a progress since my accident that kick started all of this!

Thanks for looking

Guardling wrote:Nice work on those Orks, Its nice to see the classic colourful minitures now and then

Thanks Guardling, I think most of my stuff fits the colourful theme. I should probably start a more gritty force, perhaps my Indomitus Marines? Though I’m thinking classic Dark Angels at the moment.

A short hobby session was had tonight. I built the last ruin for my Void Panthers display board, next on that project will be to start with the board decorating. I’ll be laying some times and some casts of SMH bases an other bits. It’ll need to mainly be flat to host the minis so I’ll have to not go too over board.

As I had the cutting and filing kit out I did a minor kit bash on the Space Marine Heroes Series 2 duplicates. Nothing special, just an arm and head swap. These seem easier to do than Series 1 as the shoulder pads aren’t integral to the body.

Rather than do the standard SMH builds I threw som paint at the tacticals I primed the other day. They got a base of Retributor Armour and a couple of layers of Liche Purple too.

Hopefully I’ll get another session in on Thursday night to get the rest of the colours blocked in on these guys and the Nuln wash too.

Thanks for looking

That's an impressive amount of painted miniatures in 2020!

I'm loving the old school orks! The banners are especially nice.

As someone who started orks with the newer 4th and 5th edition sculpts, I've not always been a fan of the old stuff.
But over the last couple of years, I've been really warming up to them. This thread has certainly helped me to appreciate them more!

Happy new year!

You did good gobert, really good.

@Ezki. Part of the reason is, that it highlights the old more satirical edge 40k had to it... newer sculpts often tend to take themselves and the universe a bit too serious.

Love these year in retrospective posts, I bet it takes a minute to compile but it's really cool to see all your progress throughout the year. Excited that the Void Panthers will continue to expand in 2021!

Fantastic year of minis! The elves, the gretchin, the Termies! Id forgotten about those Crimson fist termies, so nice. Not to mention the magestic Void Panthers and of course all the rest that I literally didn't mention. Too many to recount but all worthy of much appreciation. I applaud your most glorious year.

Great retrospective mate - congrats on an awesome year of mini painting! Nice photos too, great to see some things I had missed the first time around.

The oil stains on the BSF robot...chef's kiss

The old orks came out wonderful. Full of character - I miss cheeky orks with yellow highlights.

Looking forward to more this year mate - you've set the bar high!

Great to see that round up of minis Gobert! Personal favourites of mine are the BSF minis and your Orks at the end there, but everything you've painted up is really cool. I envy the amount of minis painted up!

Cheers Cap! I suppose 2020 wasn’t all bad.
Ezki wrote:That's an impressive amount of painted miniatures in 2020!

Yeah, I’m chuffed with the quantity and I think my quality has improved too which makes it more satisfying. I’m glad I have played a small part in helping you appreciate fine wine miniatures; they get better with age!

Cheers Not Online!!! I think you’re right, they have much more satire back then, which is often why it’s said they have more character.

Indeed, late December posts are always good on here. Looking back through the plog was how I did it, and yeah, it’s pretty quick to put together, even on a Phone. The Panthers will probably be one of three main pushes this year, along with the High Elves and Necrons. Certainly they’re the only faction I’m thinking about expanding right now. I’m currently tempted by Land Speeders, Terminators and Jump/Vanguard Marines.

Yeah, the Termies were pretty cool to do and I love how they look on the shelf. I really should do some more Fists!

Cheers bud, I reckon the camera helps! I’m personally still not convinced on the BSF robot, I think it’s something I need to try some more. Cheeky Orks with yellow highlights though I’m pretty happy with

Thanks TH, the BSF stuff have been great to paint. I do wish I’d have spent some more time in filling gaps on some of them, but it think that’s helped me learn, so it’s not all bad! As for the quantity, a good third were at least partly done with not much beyond bases needing doing. I’m running out of that sort of stuff so I expect my output to have peaked for a while at least.
IGtR= wrote:Love the year in review, and the classic orks and BSF in particular brought me joy to see in the mix!

Thanks IGtR, it seems Orks have been my most populous looking at my shelves. BSF has been great fun and I look forward to finishing that off, hopefully this year. I’ve got all the minis for the full set of expansions, but I’m missing the official stuff from No Respite. Zoaty, Plague Marines and Giant Spindle Drones will appear at some point.

No painting updates this week; craziness of homeschool, building works and fitting work in hasn’t been conducive to hobby time. Hopefully tomorrow evening will give some head space. I did however take some pics to document my 2 years of hobbying since returning.

Ok, so the Bikes and Buggy haven’t been touched with a brush, but I like how big the waagh looks. If I base them this year they’ll count right? As will banner on Makari and the converted gobbo? The pile of shame/opportunity has a box of 16 boyz to do and I think I have 2 or 3 bikes somewhere too.

Sticking with 40k; i note that the Blood Angels, my main 2nd Ed army hide at the back whilst the newly painted RT Fists and all new Panthers are at the fore. I really haven’t refound the love for the BAs that I thought i would have. I’d at least like to finish the Tac Squad this year and the company Banner bearer (his banner seems to have survived quite well. I have some metal Wolf Guard stripped but I feel even less inclined to do them. The Panthers will get plenty of love with Space Marine Heroes Series 2, an Attack bike, more tacticals and a dreadnought already purchased. I’m also eyeing up a landspeeder and possibly some Terminators to make complete squads.

I’d love to finish BSF this year and maybe even get some friends interested in playing. As for the Necrons, they’ll expand pretty quickly as the recipe is so straightforward and Indomitus gave me quite a few minis to build. I might even get in to the Primaris side too at some point.

My BattleMasters chaos guys didn’t see much love in 2020, though I have the Knights part way through preparation for priming. Other than that there is only the Archers left as the Ogre probably better fits with the green skins.

My elves are probably my most numerous faction at the moment, but the Orks take up more space as they aren’t ranked up on tiny bases. I really like how these guys look and I want them to be my first finished Army ever in 2021. That’ll take some doing as there are a LOT of Archers to get through with plenty of white. I then have the odd spearman and a chariot to round things out.

So that’s all of the minis I’ve finished since looking for something to ease me back in to the workplace after breaking my back. I hadn’t intended it to go on this long, but Dakka has certainly helped my motivation to keep going. I think I’ve now surpassed the love of the hobby I had as a teenager, so I will probably keep going for the foreseeable. I’ve noted some of my hobby goals above, but my explicit aims are as follows;

1 - paint at least 100 minis
2 - Finish my 4th Edition High Elf Army
3 - paint a display board for at least 1 army
4 - finish painting all of my Blackstone Fortress minis including all expansions

I think they’re achievable even with lots of building works going on for the next couple of months. I think BSF + High Elves will account for a good 75 minis, so I’ll have to up the ante if I want to do Panthers and Chaos and Orks and Blood Angels. Still as long as I’m having fun I suppose!

Thanks for looking

Cheers youwashock, I’m thinking No Respite minis or Escalation adventurers might be next on the BSC front.

Managed a bit of painting, somehow doing a second layer of gold, tidying up the purple and applying Leadbelcher took me 3 hours! Phew! I’ll do the black and washes another time! I’m glad I did the second coat though, they look much more vibrant now as there’s no grey showing through. I’m looking forward to seeing how the new shoulder pad casts turned out with a bit of paint soon !

What a great display! Your High Elves in particular are a really beautiful sight all ranked up and presented like that. A propper Oldschool army that is and more to come you say!

Your super vintage chaos warriors and beastmen are looking like they need an old cavalry unit or Lord in a chariot or something big and evil and suitably vintage to rally around.

Your Space Marines through the ages shelf is great too. And I have to agree the idea of picking up some old Wolfguard minis to paint would inspire me not a jot. Maybe save them for a kill team project or something. Lots of SM plastic incoming already by the sounds of it. Can only be a good thing in your hands.

Thanks man, there is something lovely about a unit all ranked up, looking all splendid! Sadly the cavalry for the Chaos guys is only 3 knights strong. I’ve been tempted by a Slaves To Darkness box to expand them, but I really should paint more than I buy! I certainly have lots of choice available to me...

Hehe! I should’ve magnetised them and done some extra nostalgic goblin green bases too! At some point I would like to have little display board for each army, though probably without any goblin green.

Thanks for the kind words Riddle. I reckon 1 in 4 being painted is about where I was at the start of 2020, it feels good to get them army closer to being done. I’m probably at about 3 in 4 painted now I reckon.

So as I feared the building works have taken over life at the moment. To suck even more time, Lockdown 3.0 in England sees the return of homeschool. As such Ive not managed to comment on the forums much and tonight was the first bit of hobbytime in a while.

I feel I was quite productive, getting the black bits base coated and a wash of Nuln Oil on the latest Panthers. As the Netflix documentary I was watching had half an hour to run or so I also decided to build the Start Collecting Box’s Terminator Captain.

He’s a cool mini, but his 2 head options don’t include a helmet. :(. That got me thinking, maybe he can be the reason for their fall? Or at least the reason for the black vehicles and 1st Company having Black Armour; leading by example he was the first to remove his helmet, as is traditional for the Panthers, but he was exposed to one of papa’s special recipes and succumbed to it, leading the 1st Panthers to adopt the Black? Anyway, here they are right now;

As ever Thanks for looking!

Thanks fifty, the Libby was a slow grower on me. It was only when I took the photos with my Camera that I was happy with the hood. Drake did come out pretty well, he’s a nicely detailed sculpt which helps with the paint i think

I’ve enjoyed the variety I’ve kept up since returning to the hobby so I wanted to fit it in with these guys. The renovations continue at pace, plastering is done ready for painting before the kitchen gets installed next week.
theCrowe wrote:The Reason for their fall?! Have I missed something along the way? Something heretical? I thought they were the Big E's golden boys.

Hehe, yeah they’ve been heading for a fall since the start! When I decided to not directly copy LTMWs Lions I stuck with the gold, but the purple and black linked them to my BSF Chaos Marines. They were originally going to be a Lunar Wolves successor (and still might be) using RT Space Wolves transfers, but I couldn’t find them. They might be an Emperors Children Successor being all bling and matey with Big E, but they loved their Chapter Master too much. So when Papa took him, the First Company and Techmarines went in to Mourning, the Terminators painted their Armour Black and the Techmarines painted the Vehicles Black. One thing lead to another and it became a cult to their immaculate Chapter Master. The black Armour started to spread from the First Company, with Marines embellishing their armour to keep some of the gold and to honour their beloved Fallen Master (Note to Self: buy some Chaos Marine sprues to use Arms Legs etc). As the Campaign dragged on, some began to remove their helmets to suffer the same fate as their Fallen God. Papa had other ideas and transformed them to Plague Marines, before transporting them and some of their more devout Brethren to a Blackstone Fortress.

Ok, so that grew Arms and Legs! The link to the Chaos Marines was new just now, so thanks for the nudge.
ListenToMeWarriors wrote:I think that Terminator Captain is one of the best loyalist Marine miniatures for years, frustratingly he was unique to a long OOP Ultramarines boxed set for an age but thankfully they finally released him as a solo blister a while back.

He is cool, I got him through the Start Collecting box. I think I prefer the SMHeroes2 Captain though, he has a more commanding, if maybe less Heroic pose. Indeed building work sucks, we can’t even go away on holiday either !

Indeed, the heresy of not wearing the Helmet the Emperor provided!
youwashock wrote:Glad you could get a bit of painting in. Looking forward to that Terminator.

A wee bit here and there, should help with the sanity during the building works.

That was quite a few replies, thanks guys, it helps with the motivation!

So, I’ve had a mixed few days relating to my hobby goals for the year.

The good news is I made a start on the Elves, removing mould lines from 10 archers. My plan has changed on these guys, I was planning lots of small batches, but I’m going to give one huge batch a go. Though each step will be done in between other projects. At the very least I’ll do the silver and the blue wash that way, possibly the Red too, the white sounds like a recipe for disaster though! I’m thinking I might try to convert a few of the spearmen to a champion and a standard bearer. The Champion might get one of Captain Browns arm adjustment conversions too. For the musician I might use an archer for a horn blower, or maybe flip the arm of a Spearman to be a resting hornblower. Regardless I’ll have to brave GS sculpting I think.

The “bad” news is I’ve bought more minis than I’ve painted. In my defence I was after a Land Speeder for the Panthers and my daughter enjoyed painting a Sequitor (I need to sneak a pic to post) and asked for some more mini guys like it. So I spotted a bunch of new in box bits in a bundle on eBay, netting said Speeder, Storm of Sigmar (Stormcasts plus some Chaos chaps), a AoS paint set (with Stormcasts), some Combat Cards, an ETB Intercessor and some old school Chaos Beastmen! They should arrive this week so I can count them up, but I reckon I’m about 20-25 in the negative if I keep the Chaos minis and let my daughter have the Stormcasts. The things we do for our kids hey!

Good luck with the big batch mate. It's not my favourite way to work either but it definitely feels good to get them all done in one wave rather than repeat 10 fiddly steps over and over.

And I think that there should be an exemption to the rule for minis bought for kids to paint/play with!

Great group shots by the way. Those Elves are really an impressive bunch, tugging on my heartstrings! The different marine chapters are cool all together too, a bit like an old WD showcase.

Cheers, I hope the big batch won’t be too bad. I reckon it’ll take me most of the year doing it between other hobby projects as long as I don’t get too distracted!
I seem to remember an addendum to a rule book saying that they don’t count in your pile of shame if bought at the same time as ones for your kids!
I’m glad you liked the group shots, and thanks for the high praise!
DJJazzyJeff wrote:hmm, yes. Buying models is so much quicker and easier than painting them. And there are so many out there!

Yeah, damn those eBay merchants and their cheap plastic crack! They’ve all arrived, just about in one piece. I thought they’d come with a Brucey Bonus squad of Sniper Scouts too, but it was just the remnants of the sprues.
Viterbi wrote:Ok, your renovations are much more daunting than ours, which mostly are exchanging furniture

Ha, yeah, they’re the biggest thing we’ve undertaken. New kitchen arrives today at some point!

Hobby time will be limited this weekend as I’m painting the kitchen ready for installation of new units next week. Hopefully my back holds out! I have managed to sneak a bit of time prepping minis. I’ve removed mould lines on half of my Elves and took the opportunity to snap one of my earliest paint jobs before they get repainted

Nice! I’m not sure what I was thinking here, but I liked the bright colours I guess! I’m not planning to strip these guys, so they’ll always have their blue roll under robes!

As I mentioned above my eBay spoils arrived today. There was a big hole in the box, but there doesn’t seem to be any damage to the contents. The scout sprues note above had a few skulls on them, pouches and ammo, plus a single torso and the his weapons. They might come in handy at some point I guess. The Speeder looks intact on the slide and has t lost its flight stand. It’ll get.a new 60mm base instead of the clear flight one. My daughter I keen to get painting them, so I built her 3 Sequitors.

I also decided that the Khorne Blood Warriors and Bloodreavers would join my BatlleMaster force so put together the Bloodreavers.

They’re quite a cool kit, I just need to decide whether stick with the purple and gold or switch to Red and Gold. I’m hoping to mount them so I can swap between display on square bases and round omes of my daughter wants to try AoS. They seem to rank up pretty well here

I’ll probably be AWOL for a while, but will try to find time to comment on plogs where i can

Thanks for looking

Cheers, it’s quite stark, I think this place and YouTube have helped loads with any progress. Renovations are going ok. Seems to be a new issue most days, but we’re getting there I think!

Were they painted back when 4th edition was released? I have one of the same models that I recently found, and yours is much better!

Yeah, not long after, probably with craft paint that my parents got me. I think the silver and black ink wash were done later though

Thank igtr, I hope I manage to paint them all this year, there’s not too many so it shouldn’t be impossible

Fingers crossed your back let's you finish the kitchen so you can get back to hobbying....

Yeah, they’re better than I remember! Kitchen is all painted, but I have more to do once the sparky fixes a socket.

Nothing overly exciting, but I built all of the Liberators for my daughter and the Blood Warriors for myself. The latter I even managed to rank up on 25mm bases without too much trouble! I might have to base them at different heights just to be sure though. I’m hoping to get some decent hobby time at the weekend to get the Panthers squad moving again.

Thanks for looking

Yeah, they’ve been a pleasant surprise. They might even jump the queue at some point. I reckon it wouldn’t be too much to swap out some weapons, maybe do a cut and shut job with some marine legs? As for my back, I’m a permanent cyborg now, so likely to have niggles for quite some time. More exercise would help I guess.

Yeah, the Khorne Berzerkers are scary, but have you seen the Khorne Bureaucrats? No? That’s because they’re so organised they kill everyone that sees them! The Khorne Civil Service really is a thing to behold!

Yeah, it’s good to look back to see the progress. I think my biggest progress is picking colours that don’t look terrible together, that green with the blue. it’s interesting how FB might come back and whether they go back to square bases. I wonder if the AoS stuff will be part of the new old setting?
amazingturtles wrote:I'm surprised that they rank up so well! They looked pleased with it too, all shouting

It was surprisingly straightforward. I’ll probably screw it up when I base them! They do love a good line shout

Work and extension have been a bit full on of late. I did manage to build the final 2 Stormcasts for my daughter during a training seminar. They have lots of sharp bits so hopefully she doesn’t hurt herself whilst painting them. I finally got back to my Panthers tonight. Bringing the panels back to Retributor Gold and then adding some highlights with Liberator. They’re starting to shape up now I feel

So once these are done that's 2 tac squads and the bikes. Have you any planned force in mind? Like a playable list? Not that there's any chance of a proper game these days.

Yeah, that’s where I’ll be to once I’ve got these and the other combat squad finished. I don’t really have a playable list in mind as I don’t play, but I quite like the idea of a Demi-Company. I have quite a few more Marines in my possession already; the Terminator Captain (he’ll be their immaculate leader, cause of their fall) I built recently, I have most of Space Marine Heroes Series 2 (2 built recently), a Land Speeder, Venerable Dread and 7 tacticals new in box. I also have an attack bike a squad of tacticals and most of a command squad waiting to take a bath in dettol.

I made a decent bit of progress today, getting the Liberator Gold done on the Armour and started on the Leadbelcher for the mechanicals and embellishments whilst looking after my youngest (she wanted to hide in the loft from the scary Pixar movie that eldest said was boring). I then finished the Leadbelcher and did the Stormhost Silver on both the gold and Leadbelcher.

I must’ve used Mithril Silver on previous Panthers as I think these boys look a bit more shiny (cue huge crab singing his song in my head). Next up will be the Purples and Blacks before the greens and Parchments. Then it’ll just be the bases to finish them off. Maybe next weekend, but knowing my progress rate, maybe not!

Thanks for looking

Glad to hear you have plenty of marines in the chamber on this project, I've really enjoyed seeing the army grow.

I’ll get to the purple highlights next, before the black the start blocking in the greens.

Cheers theCrowe, I was browsing a Roman Names list just now and picked out some of those. Some cool other ones too, I think as particularly struggling with finding a few non-us ending ones. I’ll add them to my list.

So I pretty much got the latest 5 Void Panthers done, just their bases to do. I gave them and extra mid tone on the purple highlights, whilst it’s not blended I think it’s a less stark contrast now. I’m not sure I got their lenses as nice as the other squad or bikers, I’ll have a look with fresh eyes in the morning and see if I can improve them. One thing is the MkIV chap seems to have particularly large lenses, not sure if it’s the pattern or the mini.

One mistake I might have made is the highlight placement. With the first squad I highlighted based on the direction their looking. With this lot I kept the heads separate and have highlighted based on their chest orientation. So from that angle it looks nice and bright gold, from the face on it’s a bit dull. Oh well, hopefully I’ll get it right for the next 5!

Thanks for looking!

So I managed to steal a bit of hobby time today in between housework and DIY. I dry brushed and washed the bases just before lunch then post kiddos bed time I finished up all of the details and rimmed them in black. Sadly no time for glamour shots, so you’ll have to make do with some phone pictures on my cutting mat;

I’ve only chosen names for 2 of the combat squad, in Space Marine Adventures the Heavy Bolter Marine is called Grimm and the Flamer dude; Infernus. I don’t like either of those but in the Japanese Space Marine Heroes they’re Toriad and Calistus. They seem much more fitting.

The other 3 are made from bits of Gaiun, Garus and Titus. I’m currently leaning towards Gaius, Nicobar and Aquila (for the beaky). I’ll decide when I take the Glamour shots, so if anyone has strong feelings what they should be called let me know.

Thanks for looking

Regarding names it can also be fun to just throw some words into Google Translate. I started naming some of my characters and use two words to describe their look, battlefield role, weapon or something like that. First word I translate into Latin, the second into Afrikaans. The checkered bases are fun, just using black ink after dry brushing seems to give a decent effect. His times were extended with sand/paint last which I filed down and put grooves in. Sadly no picture updates today, but I have been busy with not so much exciting mini prep. It’s surprising how long it takes to clean mould lines from High Elves! I’ve done 35 of the 40 Archers so far and planned out roughly the conversions I want to make to the Spearmen (I’m going to try to create a Champ, BSB and Musician). I need to decide what to do with the 2 spare spearman I have. I could try to do another BSB and Musician for my Archers to also have a command group? That’d mean having the archers in a single unit of 52 though! Which sounds kinda cool though... hmm tempting.

I also squeezed in a bit of priming between rain and snow, getting 25 of the Archers ready for paint and 5 poxwalkers for BSF too. My main progress halter is grey primer now so I’m limited to black or white now until possibly after lockdown ends. Unless I happen to be passing near a Halfords soon.

I’m thinking my next painting will be Blackstone Fortress, either Mechanicus adventurers from Escalation or the poxwalkers. That might not be this weekend as a friend is trying to organise a social video call.

Anyway thanks for reading my ramblings!

Maharg wrote:Nice shot of the minis shelf, the high elves look particularly glorious in the sun

Thanks Maharg, their white really loves the sun and shows them at their best (as long as you don’t looo too closely )

A reduced mini session tonight as I partook in a few beers with friends local and Anzac via MSTeams. It was quite stark the difference between the UK and NZ, one country in lockdown and the other being Business as Usual (as long as you didn’t want to leave).

Through the day managed to prime some Elves between chores and prepped the rest for priming whilst the kids painted some minis (forgot pics of their efforts). During the Teams call I did some conversion of 3 Elves.

One of them got a banner pole added, including some milliput additions to the crossover and pole ends.he was going to have a spear made in to a sword, but the position of his hand would have made the sword obscure his face, so he’ll be getting a shield instead.

Another had the Captain Brown chop (to allow rotation of his right arm), but instead of having a spear I removed the pole entirely to change it to a sword as he’ll be the unit Champion. I meant to add an end to the handle (hilt?) using the piece that attaches the spear to the pole, but it didn’t look right. I then forgot to add a blob of milliput whilst I had it out . I’ll get it next time.

The third had his spear removed too, it I’m of sure where fo take him. I had planned a horn blower I think a drummer would be easier and match pose more but would High Elves use drums? The SoL entry seems from 2nd Ed seems to only show Hirn blowers. I’ll add pics tomorrow, but thoughts gratefully recieved
Thanks for reading tipsy ramblings

Thanks Viterbi, they just looked too good in the sun to not take a picture! Flute is an interesting idea, I’m not sure how it will work with the pose of the Spearman particularly the drape of this sleeve. Here’s how they look and it seems I forgot to mention that they got some fancy plumes donated from some Dark Eldar bits I got in an eBay win.

With his hand in the air like that he could almost be swinging a clacker like a 40s football fan. It'd be hard to convey that without a vintage striped football scarf too but I fear that would blow his whole high elf look right out the window. As we all know high elves don't do football, they like rugby.

Everything thing looks better in the sunshine!

Works been mental this past week or 2 so I’ve not managed much hobby time of late. I did squeeze an hour and a bit in. I was in a bit of a Blackstone Fortress mood so I laid down some colours on the Poxwalkers and the Mechanicus chaps from Escalation. I did a few different tests with contrast, using Fyreslayer and Guilliman over Bleached bone, a mix of Bleached bone and white then another just the primer. I used a 1:1 mix with Contrast Medium.

The Fyreslayer was much paler than I expected so there’s not as much tonal variety as I wanted, still they all seem a decent base to start from. I’m quite excited about the yellow Mechanicus guys though

Thanks for looking

I hope so, and yes, you’ve got to love Averland Sunset, it’s a great yellow!
Don Qui Hotep wrote:I like the spread of skin tones, with the different sculpts I think you've got a nice variety of poxwalkers there.

Thanks Don, hopefully they come out as a cohesive unit by the end.

Work continues to be nuts especially with homeschooling. I have a big deadline on Friday which should ease things, even more so if Boris keeps his word and opens schools again the following Monday. That’ll be the release of a lot of time and hopefully stress too, not just for the grown ups, the kids are really desperate to get back to school!

I picked up the Ad Mech and Poxwalkers again. I didn’t really get much done as the metal work took AGES! I mostly did bits on the Ad Mech to the point they’re pretty much ready for their washes. The Poxwalkers just got some metal bits adding as I had them and the Leadbelcher out. I might park them for the next session and get the Ad Mech boys moving

I’m wanting them to have a bit of orange to the yellow, which I think Seraphim Sepia will give them. I hope so as I don’t have any Orange wash! The Servitor will get some Hazard stripes on his power claw, I might do some on the bottom of the other lads gown too, or I might go for cogs. If I go cogs, do I go white or black?

Thanks for looking

Poxwalkers look cool with their mixed skin tones and Admech guys are well on their way. Hope the Sepia wash works out, also it doesn't really go towards orange in my experience.
And Admech cogs are of course black & white

Yeah, it seems the closer we get the more anxious she’s getting. The first week is going to be a big one I reckon. Thanks for the Sepia pointers, I think I’ll try it out on the Servitor first and see how we go. Yes the skull and cog ad mech symbol will be black and white, I wanted to give his cloak a nice trim too, or maybe one side should be black and the other white, or maybe do a meshed gears pattern?
Not Online!!! wrote:I really Like the darker poxwalkers.

Thanks Not Online, I’d hoped for much darker, but that might have to wait for a future expansion of their ranks.

Thanks TH, I’m trying to resist buying more stuff at the moment...

Which brings me to my reason for posting... I seem to have bought more stuff! in my defence I paid less than a £1 per mini inc P&P for a squad of 10 Assault Marines for my Void Panthers. The down side is I think a few of them need heads and most need shoulder pads. At one point I had LOADS of the latter, but I seem to have used most of the up. I might need to strip some more stuff to free some pads. Helmets might be a bit more of a downer, I’ll have to check my bits box tomorrow. Maybe their heads will arrive with them and we’re just not in the photo?

Evening all!

My Assault Squad has arrived, I was a little worried that some might be recasts, but they had been sprayed a colour that looked a bit like resin. Sadly, there is bad news, in that they mostly have odd poses and I can’t seem to pry them apart . The good news is that I have managed to find enough chainswords to arm them all, less an eviscerator and special weapon marine. I need to dig around a bit for a couple more right handed bolt pistols to go with the left handed chainswords. Then I need to sort some pads for them

Bearing all of that in mind I spent most of this evening cleaning mould lines and prying apart minis as best I could. Plastic Cement is a :bleeep: the last 10mins were spent posing the first few;

I’m thinking the first dude on the left might be the Sergeant as he has the skull on his helmet and his left arm is a bionic raised to lead the charge. I might try to build up some of the Sector Imperialis so he has something to jump off, maybe all the Sgts need to have a cast of the Space Marine Heroes Series 1 Sgts fallen statue?

If anyone has any ideas for prying apart plastic cement or work with odd poses, let me know. I’m also considering painting the jump packs black like the bikes, what do you think?

Thanks for looking

gobert,

Once plastic cement has bonded polystyrene together...it make a permanent bond as it melts both sides together.

As they are jump troops, you can always have them leaping into the air with a little brass rod going from the heel to the base and adjust the angle to make you happy with the original poses.

Cheers,

CB

Yep, all you can do is take a blade to the joint, cut and reset it in a better position. Probably after some judicious trimming and likely followed by a little greenstuff touch-up. It's a long and arduous job but there's no other way around it.

All Sgt need statues sounds like a perfectly reasonable rule. Though, does the size of the statue increase with rank? Do captains get ruined statues on plinths? Does the Chapter Master stand on the shoulder of one of those statue terrain pieces. It's a slippery slope once you establish precedent for lower ranks.

Black jump packs sounds pretty interesting. Looking forward to seeing how that looks.

Freezing tends to help debond the plastic as it isn't a true bond throughout so you might get lucky and be able to pry them apart. +1 for the black jump packs, I think that'll be a cool look.

Cheers CB, sadly it is a permanent bond, though I think I’ve managed to rescue most of them. I haven’t made any of them flying but just shy of half of the squad are leaping from raised positions, and others are in slightly odd sprinting poses!

Yorkright wrote: No idea about the cement other than cutting them apart. As for the jump packs they would look good painted up like the bikes.

Yep, cutting was the most effective method I tried. Levering with my needle files just snapped a file!

I did break out the GS on a couple of them, and did a bit of Armour Mk mods to another, all in the name of getting a proper Corvus Mk6 Marine! Those 2 (donor and recipient) took far and away the longest to prepare! The original owner of the Mk6 legs ended up having the centre of his torso drill in order to be able to remove the legs, it worked surprisingly well! As for the Sgt on a statue... I totally forgot and got carried away creating a broken lamp for him to jump off of! on the plus side I’ve dodged that slippery slope for now
Black Pack = 3, Gold Pack = 0
youwashock wrote:Nothing to do but cut it. Your efforts so far are paying off. Looking forward to seeing them painted.

Cheers youwashock, painting will be a while off yet, but they’ve been fun so they might jump the queue if I can get some decent priming weather.
Don Qui Hotep wrote:That cement looks like nasty stuff. Maybe listen to some angry music while you hack at it.

It sure is Don, to the point that I’ve started to minimise my own use of it . . I didn’t put angry music on but I watched Batman Begins, which Christian Bale sounds angry in most of the time
Tyranid Horde wrote:Freezing tends to help debond the plastic as it isn't a true bond throughout so you might get lucky and be able to pry them apart. +1 for the black jump packs, I think that'll be a cool look.

Hmmm, I wish I’d have spotted this sooner! I’ll give it a try with my random box of Tacticals that need even more attention than these boys.
Black Pack = 4, Gold Pack = 0

So Black Jump Packs are the overwhelming favourites, which is just as well as I’ve been getting a wee bit excited about them being black all week! As such I stayed up extra late getting them disassembled and rebuilt. Following the success of the press moulded pads I’ll be spending a few minutes each evening this week getting their shoulder pads ready. Then with any luck the weather will be decent enough to get them primed. Here’s what they look like rn

There’s still a couple of dodgy poses, but some of that is down to my limited bits library leading me to using 2nd Ed plastic arms. They look a fair bit better imho, with the Eviscerator, Sgt and the running chap with the blue gun being my favourites.

Thanks for looking, C&C welcome especially if you have ideas to improve the poses (like I put the wrong arm up etc)

Thanks Not Online, the side on chappy was a tough one, I didn’t fancy butchering him so tried to show him running off whilst trying to shoot something off to the side. Tenuous I know!

I’ve been having a touch of the old hobby ADHD lately, so I swapped the stinky glue for good old PVA today. I snook in a quick crafting session on my display board for the Void Panthers whilst Mrs gobert was also crafting (a rare moment where the kids were otherwise engaged, and not with screens!). The kiddos decided to join the craft fest too and thought it was hilarious that i was doing miniature tiling, not that you can see much of it under the sand;

I’ll blow most of the excess sand off tomorrow and see how it looks. I’ve used a few bits from the SMH bases and casts of fragments of the Sector Imperialis Ruins to add some more interest. There’s even a Necron skull hiding in there too, but it’s hard to spot from that angle. I tried a few different materials, card for the tiles (small and large), a sausage roll container for the tread plate, some play dough that I hope cracks when it dries and an unused screen protector for an old phone. The first few listed look ok, but the last seems to have a film inside and out which may end up hiding the cracks when I prime it. If it does I’ll try to score along the lines if I can see them.

Thanks for looking

Assault marines are coming together nicely, you seem to be able to do a good rescue job on them. Never used plastic cement, didn't know it would bond that much.
Display board tiling looks cool under the sweeping sand. It's always good when the kids are able to occupy themselves and one gets a little hobby time while the day isn't yet over

Display board tiling looks cool under the sweeping sand. It's always good when the kids are able to occupy themselves and one gets a little hobby time while the day isn't yet over

Cheers Viterbi, a bit of daylight hobby time is always welcome, that’s for sure! I think I’ve rescued most of the squad, there’s still one or two that look a bit off, but I’ll get shoulder pads on them and see how they look before deciding whether to change them up or not.

Those assault marines look great as a group. Patience pays off! There's just something right about squat marines too after all that primaris.

Terrain looking good, nice eclectic mix of things to paint up. Hope you have success with the screen protector, that seems a nifty idea and I'm sure I have a few of those lying around. Awesome to hear you got some family time sharing the hobby too!

A bit of family hobby time can’t be beat! I think I need to disguise the edges of some of the pieces I’ve used with some more sand and sprue debris. I’ve yet to build a Primaris Marine, I’m kind of excited to see how they compare size wise, but you can’t beat classic Marines!

Thanks CB, hopefully I can get some paint on them at some point this year!

Yeah, the photo background is my main reason for doing the board, I’d like to do one for each army eventually, but that will probably take a while. Let’s see if I have enough stamina with this one first good luck restoring your bargain Assault Marines, I’m sure they’ll look resplendent in white!

No hobby time yet this week, but aim to get a few hours this evening hopefully to make some good progress on the Mechanicus dudes from BSF:Escalation

Fantastic job on the assault marines.

I thought they looked like too close to garbage when you first shared them in their raw state and asked the questions, but great to see that you have made treasure from trash!

Thanks Maharg, they’ll be a while off for paint. I’ve only managed to make 2 shoulder pads so far, so about 18 more to go before they see some primer!

Thanks IGtR, they were a bit ropey, but hopefully they look decent after a lick of paint. Being a Yorkshireman, I love a good bargain!
MegaDave wrote:Making some good progress on those rescues! It will be fun to see them on the display base.

Cheers MegaDave, hopefully before the years out!

I made some slow progress tonight (I blame s2 of For All Mankind) and got the washes on to the Mechanicus dudes and blocked out some colours on the Poxwalkers too before slapping some Agrax on them.

I’m pretty pleased with the shade that the Seraphim Sepia gave the yellow, it’s pretty much what I was after. The Poxwalkers are maintaining the Chaos colours from my BSF gang, they’ll each need a spot of green somewhere. The one with a snorkel will have green snot, but I’m not so sure on the rest, maybe the 3 spots can be glowy?

Thanks for looking

Good work on the rescue operation for the marines! It's always a lot of work. Usually pays off in the end though.
I have had to rescue a bunch of models, but all of them were messed up by my younger self to begin with

Can't wait to see the display board in the future!
It's a lot more fun to take pictures using one. Hope you enjoy building it.
It's a daunting task to build one for each army, but will be worth it.

I'd love to do more display boards for my other armies as well, but the storage space is currently an issue

Yes, the yellow looks really nice. Perhaps some green tones or shades to the pustules bubbling or bursting out of their bodies? There's a lot of area there, but a green wash might be able to speed up the painting. My two cents.

Cheers man, I’m not too sure on the first highlights though. The Techpriest chap has limited contours, so it’s pretty much back to the original yellow. I might need to go back in with the Sepia

I’ve gotta admit that I’m nor really feeling these guys. The inspiration is lacking and I can’t even decide on the colours of cables! The Servitor has a few red ones which look ok. RGB Colour wheel has blue opposite yellow, so I could do that? Dunno, maybe I need them to sit staring at me during work hours to get some thoughts going?

Thanks for looking , ideas welcome, cos I don’t have many right now!

Could you incorporate some blues with the light on his shoulder and the glow from the pistol the other one is holding? Other than that those yellows look great.

Both the yellow on your Ad Mech and the flesh of the pox walkers look great. Good to see the sepia tone gave you the desired look as well.

Some recess shading with the sepia to deepen the shadows and mixing some white into your original yellow might put you on the right track for highlights. Blue would be a neat little spot colour, it'll provide something eye-catching without the colours clashing. I find minis with tonnes of detail to be demotivating, but you're almost there!

Some blue contrast wires would look quite striking, but the red wires on the belly work well (I think blue would draw the eye away from the face). I think the yellow on the servitor is very well blended. I like Tyranid Horde's suggestion as well.

Red or brown wires I reckon, depending on how much you want them to pop.
On the flip side you could do the armour they're wearing red/brown or even Blue/Green with metal highlights, and have the cables black

Nice looking yellow. Maybe using a yellow/sepia or yellow/light brown mix to transition between the sepia and yellow layers would give more range to play with, other than that just add white as Tyranid Horde suggested, though this could end up a bit pale if you get too carried away. I like the red wires, and Yorkright's suggestions for adding some blue are good too. Hope the inspiration returns for these soon

AM guys look cool, but I get the "not feeling them" bit. They are still sitting primed in a box, although I painted up the other three minis from the set very quickly. With cables red and blue might work very well, they contrast each other and work with the yellow. Or some black and white, like the AM symbol.

Thanks TH, I decided to go back in with the sepia. I’d pretty much lost what I was looking for, and I’m much happier with the current state of them. Cheers!

I had thought of brown, but I like it. I’ll bare it in mind when I get to them, black sounds cool too.

I thought about the white, but thought it might lose the warmth I was wanting. I tried yriel yellow on the tech priest, but wasn’t happy and decided to stick with the sepia and small highlight of Averland. It won’t win a painting comp but I’ll stick with it I reckon.

Viterbi wrote:AM guys look cool, but I get the "not feeling them" bit. They are still sitting primed in a box, although I painted up the other three minis from the set very quickly. Yeah, they’re not the most inspiring of minis for me. Slowly getting progress though. I like the idea of black and white as secondary and tertiary colours. I need to make some choices now!

Thanks all for the ideas, I’m sure I’ll get round to incorporating some of them eventually! The last week or two I’ve been suffering the effects of kids being back at school, with tiredness and colds circulating again. As such progress has been minimal, though I did spend an hour last weekend on the Panthers display board. I also now realise that I have far more minis than I can fit on the board, so I’ll have to expand at some point. Sadly no pics just yet.

Tonight was the first paint session I’ve got enthused during for a while. Whilst waiting on the sepia to dry on the Ad Mech I got the Poxwalkers out again and ended up switching focus to them for most of the session! I decided I wanted their pustules to be sore, so added a purple wash to the skin surrounding them. I was going to use my old red wash too for the base of each major pustule, but it was way too bright. Instead I watered down some Khorne Red which gave a nasty colouring to the pustules. I made sure to wipe away the excess though. During that phase I figured their bodies must be badly bruised with all of the deformity and sores. So I threw on some bruise colours, black and blue were obvious choices to complement the red and purple, but I also threw in some spots of yellow. The pustules themselves got a base of Averland then a highlight of Yriel yellow;

I’m pleased how some of the bruising has come out, it gives a good it of interest. I’m torn on the pustules themselves, I quite like how the yellow works with the purple, but had originally planned to finish them with a bone colour. I think bone would be more realistic, but the yellow and purple combo looks cool. What do you guys think?

As for the ad mech chaps, they got their yellows returned to flat Averland before I washed them Sepia and gave them a minimal Averland highlight.

I’m still not feeling them, though I am happy how the yellow looks in the pics. I’ll sort their metallics out next I think, then add some secondary colours.

Thanks for looking!

I agree that the yellow and purple look nice together. Bone colored pustules might blend into the skin a bit too much?

The yellow on the ad mech guys looks good alright. Maybe after adding a few more details, you get a better feeling for their overall look.
If you are not satisfied then, you can always go back and play around with the tones.

I tried out the bone pustules on a couple of spots, and yeah, they just started looking like their skin again. My Slaaneshi Nurglites will keep bright yellow pustules it seems! Thanks Ezki

As it’s a bank holiday weekend I thought I’d finish the break off with a bit of painting. Once again I ended up focussing on the Poxwalkers, pretty much getting them done. I mainly focussed on their horny protrusions then did their eyes in green as well as the dripping snot that one seems to have. I even tried a basic OSL around their eyes and the snot. I think it looks decent enough, so went ahead and painted their bases black. The Ad Mech chaps got some detailing, with cables picked out in red or Black Templar for armoured cables. They’ll both get a couple of blue cables too. As I had the green out they got some buttons and dials painted too. I gave the Ad Mech symbols a go too, they came out decently, though they’re a bit flat. Might need to break out my glasses to try some shading/highlighting

I think I’ll call the Poxwalkers done and get some decent photos once I finish off the Ad Mech chaps. With only a couple of guys I’ll hopefully get them done during the next session.

Thanks for looking, as before, any ideas happily received!

Cheers, it’s pretty basic, just Averland and seraphim sepia but I like it well enough. Gross and manly is kinda the perfect way to describe Poxwalkers I feel. They have a certain football supporters on a Saturday afternoon that’s got a bit out of hand vibe to them

Thanks Robert, welcome to my Pooh! That was pretty much how I felt seeing a few others tackle yellow ad mech. Painting yellow isn’t too fun, but once I decided to keep it simple it was quick and looks decent enough for table top action. The Poxwalkers were just fun, slapping different washes down to make some bruising, kinda makes me want to try some more nurgle. Their Plague Marine mates will have to suffice I suppose.

Yeah, this year is going very slowly slowly on the painting front. I am amassing quite a few built and primed minis now, so I’ll switch focus at some point I guess.
youwashock wrote:The Servitor and Ad-Mech guy look great with that yellow/metal juxtaposition.

Juxtaposition, wow! That almost makes it sound deliberate and artistic, thanks! I think I’ll be brightening up some of the metal, though I think some bits will stay dark for that extreme juxtaposition. Cheers!

Some of you may recall my grand plans for getting my High Elves all painted up this year, well, I’ve been plugging away at mould lines have now got all of the rank and file Archers and Spearmen primed, ok apart from one that I forgot! I plan to do them as one massive batch. There’s 52 of them so the plan will be to do them in stages between other projects. Here’s what they look like right now;

First will be either the flesh or the chainmail once I’ve finished the 2 Ad Mech chaps.

During work breaks this week I’ve been prepping the Land Speeder I got in an eBay bundle. I’m mostly there but need to think about how I paint it.

I’ve not glued the top down yet, as I think I’ll paint the crew compartment and their legs before I do that. The good news is it came with a flight stand (most on eBay don’t seem to) and better yet, the hole fits a cocktail stick which should make painting it easier, without the risk of painting the clear stand! I’ll probably use a Sector Mechanicus 60mm base for it rather than the clear flight base though.

Hopefully get some more paint on the Ad Mech tonight, so catch ya later!

No worries, we always need more minis, right? Speaking of which, I might be 4.5 Devastators better off tomorrow... whoops!
MegaDave wrote:Oh man, those high elves excite me!

Yeah, I’m surprisingly excited about painting all 52 in one go! Final dude joined them in being primed this afternoon too, so I’m all good to go once the Ad Mech are done.

Speaking of which... I made no progress on them! Mainly because I was watching the formula e and because I ended up doing some work this evening. Instead I concentrated on Void Panther goodness, getting the Land Speeder sub-assemblies put together, then getting some shoulder pad icons ready too.

I reckon I’ll add a few embellishments to the speeder, a couple of Panther icons down the side and maybe even a larger one replacing the eagle on the front? Not sure on the latter though.

Hopefully there will be painting over the next week or so as I have the week off! Maybe even some with the kids if they’re good!

Thanks for looking!

Excited to see the Speeder moving forward!

I’m keen to get the Elves sorted, they’ll only have taken 30years, so it’s probably about time! I suspect the Mithril Silver stage will be deadly though

In other news I finished off the Ad Mech guys. I decided to go with red for the cables and blue for the lights/weapons. I even tried a bit of OSL, though it came out a bit stark in places. I think I let it pool a bit too much and the blue I used has quite a strong pigment. Anyways, here’s what they look like;

Even to the end I haven’t found these guys particularly enjoyable and I think it tells with the limited effort I’ve gone to in a few areas. Still they look decent enough and I’m glad to have them done. That gets me down to single figures of Blackstone Fortress minis left to paint, with 8 left (2 big drones, 2 escalation adventurers, 3 Plague Marines and 1 Zoat). Next up though will be Mithril Silver on the Elves, doing it first I can just slap it on quickly is my theory. After that I have to Void Panther Tacticals, some AoS Khorne lads or some BattleMasters Chaos Archers unless I prime some other bits I have laying about.

Thanks for looking

Cool results on the minis and good progress on the Blackstone fortress stuff.
Are you keeping the bases plain?

Nicely done on the OSL, I think it's very effective on the servitor's shoulder lamp. As always you add great detail to all the gauges and screens, really elevates the final model.

Cheers Guardling, BSF has mostly been fun, and it feels good to be on the home stretch with them all. I’ve basically not decided on the bases. I was planning to follow the Midwinter Minis tutorial, but I’m also tempted by a 3D printed set of BSF bases. I’ll need to decide at some point soon I guess.
Don Qui Hotep wrote:Nicely done on the OSL, I think it's very effective on the servitor's shoulder lamp. As always you add great detail to all the gauges and screens, really elevates the final model.

Thanks Don, the OSL looks pretty good from the front, but much less so from the top. Still it’s only like the 3rd or 4th time Ive tried it so I’m not too upset. The gauges and screens were about the only fun bits in these two.

Speaking of fun, I’ve just got the first colour on the Elves;

I absolutely nailed the consistency on the Mithril Silver, it flowed nicely but gave good coverage on the chainmail. The helmets needed 2 coats, but even with that it took about 2 mins per mini. Not bad for an evenings work.
In the background you might have spotted the assault marines. They and the Land Speeder crew are getting their chapter and squad markings applied. I’ve cast all of the chapter symbols, but have about 5 of the slightly wonky assault markings to go.
I’ve pretty much decided on my next painting project. I’m gonna crack out some 2nd Ed Metal Blood Angels. I only have 3 to do to finish the squad I started at the beginning of this hobby stint!
Thanks for looking!

Well of course it will be no, because how could that be a "staunch line of spears"

Honestly, getting those metallics to flow smoothly and still cover is such a challenge, so satisfying when it actually works!

Great work on the Poxwalkers and Ad Mech since I last checked in Gobert, the OSL works well with the yellow without turning green and the highlights on the yellow are spot on.

Also, that's a lot of spearmen!

They’re just the reinforcements;

They join the other 40 hiding in the current army. The archers join the 10 I already have too. It’ll be a half decent sized force when I’m done even if it doesn’t have any special units beyond a few Silver Helms.
Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll wrote:Honestly, getting those metallics to flow smoothly and still cover is such a challenge, so satisfying when it actually works!

Yeah, they’re honestly quite tricky for me to get right. This is probably the first time metallics have been pleasurable, so much so, that I didn’t even have music or TV for this session!

Cheers TH, it’s good to get them off the painting desk so I can move on with something else. I need to decide how I’m going to split the Spearmen, I have 52 and ideally would have 5 or 7 on the front row so the command group is central.

Captain Brown wrote:gobert,

Yeah, it’s going to take me quite a while I reckon! Hopefully before the end of the year they’ll be done, though I fear that might be wishful thinking!
Viterbi wrote:One color down, how much more to do?

Quite a bit; wash metal work with blue; flesh base, wash & highlight; red base & wash; hair in black (unusual for high elves I know!), pouches in blue & wash, clothes in grey and highlight; base, black and 2x dry brush. So about 8-10 sessions I possibly. I tend to do a project every 4-6wks so yeah, optimistic to think I’ll be done within the year!

I did make a start on my next project. Back to my roots with some Blood Angels; the Sgt, squad leader and heavy weapons guys from my first squad, along with the Company Standard bearer. Sgt and Standard have banners that I’ll reuse, but may do up a little. I cut those off for safety though! So far I’ve just for the Mephiston Red and Agrax wash;

I decided to just paint over their previous scheme, as they were pretty light on the layers and as Squidmar put it, not every model is for golden demon... or something like that. The sentiment is right, it’s for fun, and the change to the level of detail is minimal, so why bother stripping unless it’s crazy thick!

Thanks for looking!

No hipshooting for that heavy bolter. Awesome job tackling the High Elves. 4th edition feels are almost overwhelming.

The flesh-colored poxwalkers look good, with some nice realistic-looking diseased flesh. Yellow admech is also a nice change of pace rather than the standard designs. It certainly gives them a very different feel. Also, great to see that classic landspeer. Nice to know not everyone has abandoned 30 years of space marine history for the Primaris. Those High Elves are also a sight for sore eyes. I was just flipping through a few old issues of White Dwarf from the late 90s and digging those old elf models.

Nope, this Heavy Weapon is an aimed shot! The Elves will be a long term project, but I’m making decent progress on the Angels, so they may make it back to the painting desk soonish...

Thanks Riddle, vaguely realistic was what I was going for, though I should have done some gore on them too! It’ll be a while before I let go of classic Marines, plenty of old paint jobs to redo as well as some Void Panther expansion plans. I do have the Primaris from Indomitus, which I’ll eventually paint as Dark Angels I think. I don’t suppose you found the WD article where I found the recipe for the Elves? I think it was an Andy Chambers scheme back in the day.

More progress tonight on the Blood Angels. Though I can’t promise it to be exciting, just building back up to Mephiston Red on all of them and Evil Sunz Scarlet on the first 2.

I'd have done some more, but the devastator armour is really fiddly and took ages for each layer and the Grand Prix was interesting

Thanks for looking, sorry for the full update!

Cheers Viterbi. Firing from the hip is the coolest way, that’s for sure! That said, there’s no school like old skool! I think there’s a place for both, but not in 2nd Ed

It’s been pretty busy in chez gobert this past few weeks and it doesn’t show any signs of getting quieter. Weekends and evening will soon be taken over by decorating and door hanging, as our extension nears completion. I’m not looking forward to 3 coats of varnish on the door edges!

Tonight though I managed a little bit of hobby time, getting the Evil Sunz Scsrlet layer finished. Then instead of starting the highlights I got all of the black bits basecoated and made a start on the Leadbelcher.

I would’ve got more done but I had to fix a couple of bits of drop damage; reattaching HB guys bolt pistol arm and the Standard Bearers plasma pistol. Then as I was about the start Leadbelcher on the HB he slipped from my grasp and his Heavy Bolted flew off! Remembering 25yr old trauma I decided it would be easier to pin it rather than rely on superglue alone as I did back in the day. By that point my movie had finished (I’d almost forgotten how good Dark Knight is!) so I packed up for the evening. I might do some more tomorrow night depending how long my timesheet takes to complete.

Until next time, thanks for looking!

Hey mate, I'm always impressed with your output and tonight is no exception.

I've just caught up on the last three pages and it was great to follow your journey with the yellow. I think you've really nailed it in the end with that final highlight. They have a really neat old 'eavy metal style to them. I think the OSL is a nice touch, too. The dark blue splash makes the source light seem brighter. I can totally see these guys crawling through the streets or sewers of some busted up hive world or the inside of a space hulk.

Glad to see the Blood Angels back too! Love the old banner bearers. More paper flags in the works?

Keep it up mate, thanks for sharing!

Yeah, not much time this week, will have a few hours tonight and maybe tomorrow whilst watching the F1 Portuguese Grand Prix. The builders finished the plastering on Friday, so next week will be ceiling and wall painting, though hopefully culminating in a giant Great Wave of Kanagawa wall sticker which were quite excited about!
tauist wrote:I'm digging your poxwalkers and those High Elves take me back! My cousin had a High Elf Army from that era. I wonder how well you could kitbash those old High Elves with the recent AOS models, Silvaneth or what were they called again?

Thanks tauist, welcome to my plog! The Poxwalkers were pretty fun, I’m starting to think I should revisit them as I forgot to do gore on their wounds and weapons. Sadly, I’m not sure the old elves would kitbash much beyond using Lumineth shields. bBeing single piece, they’re pretty hard to convert to anything.
Not Online!!! wrote:Looks promising, also nice standart / banner incoming

Yeah, he’s pretty cool, he’s holding the banner using a power fist!

Thanks Yorkright, your recent Assault Angel was cool, hopefully these boys come together as well as he did. I think the banner bearer was from 95/96 http://www.solegends.com/citcat1995-6/cat19956p037-02.htm" target="_new" rel="nofollow">apparently. Which somehow was 25/26 years ago...
Viterbi wrote:Good luck on getting that HB pinned next session and hopefully an uneventful finish of the home extension project!

He’s already pinned, and seems to be holding. Now I need to stop dropping him! The extension is progressing nicely, hopefully just another couple of weeks and the builders will be gone!

Flattery will get you everywhere tzurk! I’m pretty sure I cant claim any ‘Eavy Metal standard of painting, but I’m having fun at least. The OSL looks better to me each time I see it, but it was a bit half-arsed. There are banners for the flag poles, the Sgts isn’t particularly special, just the usual red BA symbol. The Standards was drawn by a 15-17 year old gobert and I still think it looks pretty good. I might add a few more bits to it, but it will definitely be going back on.

Not much progress to report on as yet, but I finally got the display base for my Void Panthers ready for Priming. I even threw on some black primer;

Apologies for the photo being a bit tricky to see, but you get the gist. The shiny clay big was a screen protector that I cracked, but it seems to have been too good at its job and is too smooth. I might have to give it a few gouges to rough it up. The other flattish bit is rolled and dried out play dough, I have to say I’m quite impressed with it! I might pop outside and give it a zenithal blast of grey then white later on.

It’ll be back to the Blood Angels tonight whilst watching the F1 Quali

Thanks for looking at pictures of black stuff!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And I totally forgot to take pictures of the board post it’s grey and white zenithal basecoats. You’ll just have to trust me that it looks good!

I did though do some proper painting with brushes and everything. The Angels got their metalwork painted in Leadbelcher and Retributor, each of which also got their washes of Nuln and Agrax. Instead of knocking it on the head at the washes I painted the Sgts face and hair, along with all of the purity seals in bleached bone. The Sgt then had his hair dyed blonde with a yellow wash. Still not wanting to go to bed I also hit his face with some Guilliman flesh. And then I did call it a night;

Ok, so I didn’t call it a night there... I was a good boy and did my exercises... still not content to go to bed I’m sat here typing this for you good internet folks! So now I am off to bed as it’s now early hours of Sunday

Thanks for looking!
