Well as of lately 2 really awesome tackle boxes because I have been transporting my army a lot more lately. They work great for me and nothing has broken while I transport them. Fragile things are usually set on tissue paper. When I don't plan on playing any games for an extended period of time I have a pretty huge plastic case with pull out layers.

A GW case to lug minis around in, a tool kit with custom cut foam for my tanks and monsters.
A cardboard box for the models that are currently unpopular with me and a pair of shelves for my favoured 'out of use' models.
This would have been better if it were a multi choice questionnaire.

I put most of my infantry models inside the foam GW cases. If they are painted I try and squeeze them in for protection. Sometimes if a model is too big though I just wrap them up in tissue paper or toilet paper (extra soft ) and then stick them in with the bigger models. I usually stick the big models, dice, measuring tape and broken and unpainted masses of models inside converted GW model boxes (AKA my Land Raider box that is now sectioned off to hold models). The GW cardboard boxes are deep and wide usually and they are pretty sturdy. Plus they have cool artwork to keep people from accidentally throwing the cardboard boxes away. I have heard horror stories of such things on this site.

Anywho, that's my storage story.

I voted for "offical GW carry case" although i also keep some packed neatly into a showbox covered in beanbag beans... Mostly these are my old LOTR minis. Some i keep on my desk.

Two main WM/H factions go in PP BF bags, spare trays for occassional extras, but WHFB currently all sit on magnetized trays inside a GW box, and anything I don't actively play sits in a display cabinet. Unpainted stuff is found on old Fast food trays organized by faction.

I built a case myself... bought a case from the hardware store and put a metal plate inside. Then each of my models got a magnet in the base. Result: much space and the paint has no contact with any foam.

I stow my in the Really Useful Box things with plastic separators and that works well to keep my models organised (and unbroken).

I magnetized the bottom of all my models so I store them in plastic containers with sheets of metal epoxied to the bottom. It works well since they don't move around. The only problem was when I first started doing this I bought magnets that were WAY to strong. They strong magnets work well on heavy vehicles like Land Raiders but I snapped so many infantry off their bases because of it.

My "third party army case" is a pair of Plano tackle boxes strategically lined with air conditioned filter foam. I have been using these for minus for almost 15 years and it has only failed me once, fortunately it was with plastic D&D minis and it was my fault. I put a good anoint of time in to make these work, and so far, so good!

I used to keep completed models in tins, but I recently got a sabol army transport for my birthday. Very nice. I was always scared something would break in the tins, though nothing ever did.

Meanwhile uncompleted models or other projects on the go cover every available surface in my house. Sometimes I manage to quarantine it to one table, but it always spreads.

I've made custom carrying cases with the eggcrate foam, infantry balance well in between the valleys. Also cutting out custom shapes from square mattress foam worked miracles for my old Tyranid Army.

Lately, it's been Sabol Foam Trays in a coincidentally perfectly sized cardboard box for my Space Marines. My next army, Eldar, is planning on having a custom display board, just magnetizing the miniatures to the board for transport.

Imperial Guard stored in metal ammo boxes from a surplus store.

I don't have many tanks or metal/finecast models so it works for me. Transport in duffel bag.
