PONG official movie announced

Posted Dec 29th 2005 2:30PM by Blake Snow

Atari CEO, Bruno Bonnell, confirmed today that the company will be working on a movie adaptation of PONG due for a late 2006 theater release. Way I Play writes: "Few details have been released about the plot of the movie, but director Paul W.S. Anderson let a few hints slip out. 'There will be awesome hand to hand combat, I can tell you that much,' blurted Anderson. 'If you?ve played PONG, it will be like discovering it for the first time all over again. If you?ve never played PONG, it will be like discovering it twice. Twice much,' continued the Mortal Kombat director.

The screen play will be written by Steven E. de Souza, know for other video game movies such as Street Fighter and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. Souza told Variety that ?PONG is the classic story that all other video games are based on. PONG: The Official Movie of the Game will take you past the pixels.?

"This is like watching two great titan gods battling in the sky. If by titan gods you mean wind up monkeys, and by sky you mean the alley behind a bar. "

IMDB Plot Summary

Right paddle guy (Russell Crowe) was just a humble video game enthusiast who dared to dream of one day achieving his goal of a gold medal in the pong olympics. At the peak of his career he thought he was on his way, after coming out of nowhere to defeat 5 time world Japanese pong champion, Pong Kong (Ken Watanabe) in an exhibition match. The babes, the money, the fame, were all his for the taking. However a crippling wrist injury prematurely ended his career and he was forced to work on the docs after his Atari game developing company folded in the economic crash of the early 80s. Regaining his strength, and re-learning the art of pong under his old nemesis turned mentor, Kong, he gets a shot when his manager gets him another exhibition match with left paddle guy, the current world champion Boris "The Belarus Executioner" Mikhalov (Dolph Lundgren) and manages a draw! Working his way up the chain, the night before the title event his right wrist begins to swell. With his love interest cheering him on (Katherine Zeta Jones), he will play the title match OFF HANDED against the man who once killed 3 men in a tournament after playing pong 132 hours straight when they starved to death! With everything on the line, there is only Pong. 2 paddles enter, but only one paddel leaves the ball behind.

Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, official score by Harry Gregson-Williams.
