I was bored last weekend and knocked this up in just under an hour. Bonus points if anyone can figure out what the character is from (hint: I mention him in one of my previous posts here on Dakka)!

It is by no means a crafted piece. I just wanted some general comments and criticisms - what I did well, what I didn't do well, what looks applaudable, what looks deplorable, etc.

Let me know if you have any questions about the piece - I'm more than happy to answer!

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person, who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

It reminds me a lot of this webcomic:

I like it overall, it's good concept art. Not quite sure what it's referencing, though.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

I love that comic. Gone With the Blastwave is great. Not what I was referencing, though.

I like it. His right arm looks a little funny though.

I love seeing more pics around here.

Did you draw him straight off or sketch out a skeleton first? I'd say build him up from a skeleton to keep the shape more coherent, it looks like he's assembeled a bit funny otherwise.

I had a very rough skeleton put together for him - I wanted to make his body look overly bulky, as he's wearing a militarized, combat useable hazmat suit.

@Jazz: I agree with you on the arm. It was a bit narrower in the forearm than I meant for it to be.

I'm still hoping someone will figure out what he's from/how I reference him.

Any more guesses anyone?

Does "The Setting Sun" ring any bells? Bueler?

Yeah, the right forearm and hand look a bit small.

Overal, the sillouette doesn't say much. If you draw an outline around a figure, eliminating all of the interior detail, you should still be able to ascertain what the figure's action it. With your character's arms in front, the sillouette lacks clarity.

The line weight is more or less the same for the figure as it is for the fortification (?) in the background. Generally, background elements should have less contrast and finer line-weight than foreground elements.

More shadows will really make the drawing pop, too. Don't worry about obscuring the details of your character's costume a bit; the overally drawing will be improved with shadows.

Thanks for the critique, PP. I really wasn't going for a distinctive figure, but I definitely agree with you about the silhouette. I'm considering going in with an artist's pencil and shading the inked areas to make the shadows more pronounced and defined.

As for Jazz and Hellfury, the character Michael Richards is in a story I am writing called The Setting Sun. If y'all check my very first post of Dakka, you'll find it. That piece was written a hell of a long time ago, and has since been reworked and "Real-ized" in the sense that it's not overdramatic or ludicrously ignorant of physics (like acidic clouds that eat through metal, etc). I'd still love to get comments on it if you have any suggestions I might want to add in to the edits.
