I have been to a fair few Forums on the Net for 40K. By far, Dakka is the best, in all respects.

Nice presentation.
Simple upload of files.
Great info from experienced gamers.
MODS aren't heavy handed.
Clear Topic Lists.
Respected by far the most, IMHO for it's style.

Not looking to kiss @$$, I just think sometimes, these things need to be said.

I know for a fact that I will probably say stuff that gets me into trouble, (I have before!!!) and it is always handled in a very proffesional manner, that says a lot for the Admin etc.

Keep going Dakka, die-hard fan here in Australia.

Dakka is a really good forum, and I'd like to think that we're all (as in all the posters) are making it better all the time. Yak and Legoburner's work are of course also making Dakka better.

This said, there are some other really good forums out there. Some are smaller and localized (Adeptus Windy City), some are focused on certain armies (Bolter and Chainsword), and others are top-notch in fields such as modelling or rumors (Warseer). There is lots of crossover here as well; Bolter and Chainsword has an amazing modelling section, for example.

I think it's hard to say that there is a "best" one, really. Dakka is traditionally known as having good rules and tactics discussions, but we're trying to expand all areas.

Well now that the GW forums are gone !

I never really thought Dakka was "by far the most respected for it's style", even though supposedly even GW staff likes us. In fact I think I've seen more sentiment that Dakka is an elitist snob hangout? But then again, I haven't really browsed other sites for a long time now.

I'll admit I left it at one point because all "we roXXorz!" comments and constant bashing of other, decent forums (especially Portent) at the time got a bit much for me. I opened Dakka awhile again after that and was glad to see that had apparently passed.

It has though, always been my favorite place just for conversation. Even at it's lowest times there's been posters contributing good replies. It definately has the best sense of humor among 40K sites on the Net . I barely even model anymore, let alone play, but I keep coming Dakka just for the chit chat whereas I only visit other forums if I'm dead-bored.

Dakka can be pretty ascerbic. I know several players who won't visit the cite as its viewed as too caustic.

I visit Dakka a lot.
Over the years, I've visited around 10 or so different sites semi-regularly (I used to do side work for an advertiser & that work brought me to the sites).

The worst site I saw, in terms of unfriendliness, was Warseer.
I avoid that place like the plague, now that I'm not required to visit.

To be honest, Dakka was giving it a run for its' money for a little while. There are a lot of people on here who just like to be mean and/or spiteful. They take disagreements personally and to argue a point with them seems to be taken as an insult. Plus, some seem to take joy in being mean to others.
There's still quite a bit of it here, but it isn't so bad that I don't want to come around. I just learn who to avoid.

**ahem**Yakface**ahem **

LOL
Just kidding.

I think that, for discussing rules, tactics, lists, etc (game mechanics related content), Dakka is the best one I see.
For discussing mini related stuff, it has to be WIP - or Terrain Genesis for Terrain. Both of those sites are uber-friendly.

For general chitchat and stuff, I actually find Bartertown the best. Of course, I've been on BTown for about 8 years, now, and know it like the back of my hand... So, I might be biased...

I likes me some Dakka, though. It's my favorite site to access during the day (it has the mose daytime traffic of the sites I can get to).

Warseer is great for just yelling at people to relieve stress during the work day.

The Eldar players there are always fun to work into a tizzy. "Three Holofield lists aren't the most powerful thing Eldar can field!"

It just makes me laugh.

I was talking to my friend last night about this. I informed him that I thought Dakka was well worth supporting, and that the price was fair for a well run site. Instantly he groans over the phone " Oh no- you have just become one of those 'Elitist Jerks' who thinks he knows it all!"
After a few choice insults by me, the conversation degenerated (only kidding-but he did give me the Devils' Advocate side of things. )

It seems there are a lot of folks out there who do not like Dakka due to the snobbery and cutting comments that get around. I am in a bit of a tizz. When I first started blogging on the site, there were some people who really annoyed me, and got under my skin.

I have ascertained that this was completely MY fault.
1. My skin should be a hell of a lot thicker.
2. Refrain from making opinions regarding others I have not met.
3. Post topics AFTER I have searched previous threads.

A few more, but none spring to mind right now.

While I certainly appreciate the compliments towards the work that we have put into making the site better and I obviously think that Dakka is a great place, utimately every forum is mainly just a collection of people discussing the hobby.

Although some sites will have different features and functions, primarily the discussion on any forum is only "better" or "worse" based on what is being posted at any given time.

One thing I am fighting to eliminate on this site are the cases where posters insult each other or other forums in general. I want Dakka to be an overall friendly place where people like Akira's friend aren't afraid to come visit and post on.

To me, the miniature gaming hobby is one big crazy extended disfunctional family. There is little to be gained by saying "Dakka is better than Warseer" but there is a lot to be lost because you give the impression that "Dakka" (as a whole) somehow thinks it is better than Warseer, which sure gives a mistaken impression that Dakka is somehow 'elitest'.

So if you all could refrain from putting down other forums, I would appreciate it.

There is hostility here. I posted on a thread on whether counts as army I was working on would work in a local tourney I might be able to attend (a rarity for me and a spur of the moment thing). I initially received some good comments on things to make it easier (a picture description when I give over the army list prior to the game). But there was some real hostile verbiage going on from some posters. It made me think about this board for a bit and frankly I’m not posting anything in the modeling section any more.

However, I think that is the natural "hostility" (if you want to call it that) that some players get over tournament games. I think you'd get some of those negative reactions no matter whether you posted that thread on another forum or if you showed it to people in 'real life' (and weren't afraid to tell you what they really thought to your face).

To be fair, the topic of your thread was "Would you have a problem with this. . ." So right off the bat you were challenging people to come in and see if they would take issue with what you were doing and clearly some people did.

Since many people don't like Godzilla armies and see them as a 'cheap' way of doing well in tournaments, a player that comes in with a 'counts as' Godzilla army that clearly hasn't had a ton of work done on it to make it look like a 40K army is going to catch flak from those people who don't like Godzilla armies or who don't like 'counts as' armies when they feel like they're being used as a 'cheap' way to do better in a tournament.

The fact is, for a whole lot of people, they put a whole lot of time into making their tournament armies look nice and then they a pay a lot of money to play in a tournament and they would prefer to play against a really nicely-painted army and/or a non-min/maxed (in their opinion) army.

To be frank, to someone who doesn't know anything about you, your army gives the appearance of being neither. So again, it definitely can come off at first glance as someone who is cheaply trying to use their existing models as a power army in a quick bid to win tournament games.

Now, clearly that isn't you, based on my experience reading your posts, but others may not have the background with you and simply responded honestly to what they saw in your thread. I don't think you can really fault them for that, IMHO.

But thats the point. Is it well painted-no never said it was (I painted it, and it wasn't complete). I didn't say what the composition was, merely the types. Wasn't asking for comments on my admittedly poor painting style. The list itself is a darn sight more expensive than well any army I have. As this was a sudden opportunity to use an ongoing project I was seriously asking if this would be a problem for players at a tourney. I didn't have a problem if people said it was confusing or statements fo that nature (and indeed took the suggestion of putting picture onto the list to heart and will do so). However, posters were questioning my motives, being called a troll etc. etc.

Frankly I wouldn't have had that type of commentary on WIP or Bolter and Chainsword. Of the group I associate with about half are focused on conversions and painting. They do not post on this board because of the perceived hostility on the board and but were surpised at the hostility of some of the reactions.

Fair enough, but you might want to try posting the same exact post on other forums. I think you might get some similar reactions.

And I definitely think that some of the responses could have been friendlier I definitely think you have the perfect storm of issues coming together in that thread (a title that challenges people, a type of army that some people hate, a "counts as" rule that some feel is abused at times) that helps to stoke such a response from some people, especially if they just glance over what you've read and don't stop to think about it for a second.

All that said, my goal is to get much of the nastiness removed from Dakka. I think we've already made some strides but we've still got a ways to go.

jfrazell, I think you're being absurdly selective, although I'm sure this is unintentional (I know bad comments stand out a lot more than good ones when you're the one they're being directed at). As a neutral observer, I thought that the reaction to your army was generally positive, or at least accepting. Of those who took issue with your army, the only posters who expressed it in a hostile way were newer users.

Look at the thread again with a cold eye. Count the number of supporters, the number of people who disagreed politely, and the number of people who attacked you. I think you will find that it reflects a lot better on the forum than you would have us think.
