Its locked to
AT&T in the US, but in other countries I don't know what carrier options you have.
I like my iphone and I have no regrets about buying it. That said, there are some notable features missing that should be fixed. I would strongly recommend that anyone considering buying one wait for whatever next iteration apple releases, whenever that may be.
The things that need to be added/fixed
IMHO are:
1) No GPS. Google maps is great and all but not being able to change directions on the fly based on your location is a major bummer. Whenever they come out with a version that has a GPS I'll upgrade my phone.
2) No voice activated dialing. Every other phone has this, why not the iphone?
3) 2 megapixel camera, no zoom, no flash, no video. I understand that a flash will drain the battery but I should at least have that option. And no video capability? Most other high-end phones have it. And 2 megapixels and no zoom means you're still going to want to carry around a real camera if you want to take any serious pictures.
4) No ability to cut-and-paste in the browser. Although you can click on some addresses on a web page and have them launch the maps feature automatically, it isn't always the case. And with absolutely no ability to cut-and-paste text it is a pain to transfer an address to the map feature (you have to keep jumping back and forth between the apps while you try to remember the rest of the address). Since the iphone recognizes multiple fingers I don't see why they can't have a "copy" button that you hold down with one finger and then use the other finger to highlight text.
5) Apps still crash. The browser and the map feature still randomly crash when you get them to a point where there a lot of things going onscreen at once. This should have been fixed months ago.
6) No IM and no mass texts. Most every other phone has the ability to send and recieve IMs and the ability to text multiple people at once, why not this phone?
7) Recessed headphone jack. 90% of headphone jacks won't work in the iphone without buying a $10 adapter. There simply is no reason they needed to make the headphone jack recessed. They better fix that with the next version.
8) Can't even do the things ipods do. You can set a portion for use as a hard drive (just to carry around files), why can't an iphone do this? You can also hook up an ipod to any computer that has itunes and
play the music off your ipod. You can't copy the music to or from the computer to the ipod, but at least you can
play it. So at a party if you want to play some music, you can. Not so (for some unknown reason) with the iphone.
9) Edge network sucks. Its not so bad in some places but in general it sucks. This is the number one reason you should wait for the next iteration of the iphone as I'm sure they'll offer the choice of a 3G network.
10) No support for flash or non H.264 video in browser. The browser is amazing, but not being able to view flash or any video that isn't specially encoded makes much of the internet off-limits to the iphone. Also, there are quite a few sites that still will crash the app.
11) A few unintuitive features. Why is there no way to view the full title of videos (they get cut off with a ". . ." if they're more than a few words long)? Why does the count-down timer not allow you to set seconds if you want? Why does the calculator not give you the option to view your progress (like why can't I see "20+64+108=182" if I want)?
12) FU ringtones. Why can I not use the music I have legally purchased on itunes as a ringtone for free? Why do I have to pay a further dollar to use a song I already own and select only a 30 second chunk? Why do I have to pay another dollar if I want to use a different 30 second section of that same song? It is simple ridiculous greed. I should be able to use any music file I own as a ringtone if I want. This one really makes me angry.
13) No third party apps. . .yet. On one hand I like the simplicity and elegance of the apple applications. On the other hand I'd really like some updates and options to the applications that I have on the phone. I know that apple has finally started to allow 3rd parties to design apps but when will these come to fruition? I never expected that Apple would not have improved or introduced new any new apps in the time since they launched the phone. They usually offer improvements fairly rapidly so the fact that no current app has been inmproved and no new apps have been added (besides the itunes store) since the launch is pretty disappointing. If this thing is as "hot" as they say it is we should have some choices and options of what kind of apps we want running on this phone.
This may seem like a really long list of crappy stuff (and it is) but I could write you a much longer list of stuff I really love about the phone. Overall I do like it very much but (as I said before) I would definitely wait for the next iteration before taking the plunge.
