Unlike Waaagh_Gonads, I can't point to specific stuff from back in the day. Where I
grew up, my friends mostly played basketball. When I started getting interested in
Rogue Trader or Second Edition or whatever it was. I picked up White Dwarf and
nobody else cared.
My parents couldn't justify spending money on these things even if we knew where
to find them. I saw the original magazine in a comic book store, and since I wasn't
given the disposable income to find them it was a non-issue. It didn't help that my
parents were raised on the fear of "Dungeons and Dragons = Satan".
When I first posted on Dakka, it was to learn about 3rd edition Eldar and other
stuff. My brother posted as bloodwyrm (his DAoC handle) and I invented malfred
for online forums (Alfred Montbank the Serpent Mage and Alfred Pennyworth
from Batman being some of my favorite characters).
I started posting at some point in college.
So my Dakka experience was all about
-asking questions about everything (despite what Task used to say, I couldn't
really travel to all the places he mentioned as possible places to game). Dakka
was my only real experience with the game outside of the 10 or so games with
bloodwyrm
-learning how to paint online and getting pictures posted to learn how to paint
online and gain inspiration from models everywhere (lazy marines, scratch built
warhound, biggerized terminators being just a few of the projects that stick out)
-learning not to buy from New Wave
-posting an imaginary flamewar against myself to kind of "get in the mindset"
of flamewars on the Internet
-discovering the Phantom Lord's OT Board and then discovering the bonfire
and then the Wasteland (Phanobi come home!)
-interviewing Nightserpent and Kenshin for the site
-learning about everything to do with 40k...except how to play the game (I'm a
hands-on learner)
-meeting a few Dakkites at Adepticon, through AWC, and through bitz swapping
As a result, I've earned the following badges of "honor":
-writing in the third person at the bonfire
-a program named malfred by Task that replicates itself to test security systems
-an evil clone NOT started by myself
-a habit for not text wrapping due to old college email programs, hideous
form fields, and delusions of poetry
-moderating the OTZone (and as you can tell, that's not much work!)
-16k posts on a 40k board when I've played fewer 40k games than anyone else
-article moderator which means tooling around with people's old posts (it's like
playing in their underwear drawers, um, yeah)
How has real life treated me since I started?
-college degree
-met my wife
-fired from a high school
-substituted in the high schools
-hired at my current job
-somebody married me!
-grabbed a second degree in Library Science
Meh, I don't know. I saw Clint's post and it seemed like a good idea to post this at
the time. Perhaps it can get lost in the warp.

For keeping an arco-flagellant in the corner in case of discipline problems. It worked, but overly sensitive parents didn't like the scars that were left, the big pussies.

Unfortunately, we realized too late that some students liked it
a little too much. :(

I guess the people who post most play 40k the least. I've played 1 game in 2 years.
Also good work on getting the article mod role. Looks like it will tie you up quite a bit.

I think that was the plan.
