it is funny to read about all those who have painted up Deathwatch but never took WIP pics... i put together a Deathwatch assault trooper 2, maybe even 3, years back and then forgot about him.
Maybe its time for me to dig him out and paint him up!

Guys, the whole point of these painting challenges is to give you inspiration to work on something currently. If you already have models painted previously (regardless of whether or not you have WIP shots of them) then they are not appropriate for this challenge!

Why not paint up one more member for your Kill Team and make him extra nice looking?

Thx in advance if anyone answers this

1) Your Dakka handle is your screen name (account name) here on Dakka.

2) Yes, feel free to paint on the Deathwatch Insignia or create it using Greenstuff, etc. As long as your marine looks like a Deathwatch marine, then you're fine.

No, people will vote on your model or models based on how cool it looks and/or how much it matches the theme of the challenge. Beyond that you can do whatever you want.

Again, have a look at some of the older challenges (in the Dakka Painting Challenge article linked in the original post) to get an idea of things you can do.

there's a little flag next to my username, in case u didn't know.

I have a question concerning the WIP pics. I have owned 2 tac squads in my entire hobby life which I use as test models for painting and converting. I have a suitable converted Inquisition shoulder pad which I have used in the past for an inquisitor, and I intend to use it in my DW marine. Now the only problem is that it, along with a few other bitz and pieces I intend to use are already painted up in different (test) colors. Is it ok for me to use multiple (painted) pieces that were pulled from various models, as long as they were from different models and built specifically for this challenge?

You handle is your user name.
You can submit anything you want, but it's going to be up to the user's of dakka to vote you into the finals to be judged. So keep that in mind.

See this WIP thing is a pain for me. I painted up a Kill Team for a campaign I tried running back in 2009, and so don't have any unpainted images

Yes, you're supposed to be converting and painting models for this contest.

Why don't you just strip and repaint any model you want to use for this contest.

As yakface said earliar you're supposed to be converting and painting models for this contest. There is no rules as written for this, this is purely a rules as intended contest. See rule 1.

Can they be based on a 40mm? Or strict 'base it with what it came with'?

Which begs the question... does anyone know of any good on-line tutorials on how to do black? I imagine a number of us who are considering this challenge could benefit from it.

I have the neatest idea for a build in my head but oooh boy... I'll need my head examined if I actually try it.

edit:

OK, I found this on dakka: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/310092.page#1818150. Not a lot there but some people who's skill I respect chimed in.

Charadon Granite in a 25/75 mix with Chaos Black looks absofreakinglutely spectacular. The Granite adds some shading that you wouldn't otherwise get just painting it "flat" black.

A quick question: does a single model entry have to be on a 30mm base?

Single models can be on any size base.

Guys, have fun with this, if you want to put a model on a 40mm diorama base that's fine. Or if don't want to put them on a base and want to build a diorama that's also fine.

Remember that this isn't a golden demon, or a tournament. There are no hard rules about base size, amount of models, etc.

Keep in mind that all submissions are going to be selected by dakka members, with the top 5 models being judged by the judges. So if you think whatever crazy thing you come up with can be selected into the top 5, then go for it!

Hey, here's a good tutorial on a 'lighter' black. And here's how it came out when I tried it for myself.

Sentinels of Baal - In Progress (roughly 2000 pts, ~35-40% painted)
Lizardmen - In Queue

While these may not be the very best pictures to display my black technique (I didn't feel like getting my whole lighting rig out to take these pics, so I had to tweak the contrast to allow anything to be seen), I still think they show enough to get my point across:

So here's my basic advice for painting black:

1) basecoast the model black (duh).

2) Then highlight the raised areas (like edges of space marine armor in this case) pretty liberally with codex grey. You can be pretty sloppy here and use a medium sized brush because:

3) Once that's dry, come back with the smallest brush you have and your black paint. Use the black paint to 'tidy up' the raised codex grey edges, although you still want to leave a fair amount of grey on any raised area (I'll explain why in a second). So for example, you could paint the entire edge of a space marine shoulderpad with codex grey and then go back with a tiny brush and black paint and paint a tiny stripe of black down the middle of that shoulderpad edge and now it will look like you've painted a really awesome stripe of grey on each ridge of the shoulderpad edge!

4) Wash the model with GW's black wash (or any other black wash). This will dull out the grey you've painted and make it just barely look lighter than the true black underneath.

5) Once that's dry, you go back with codex grey again and using the absolutely smallest brush you have you now re-highlight just the very edges of everything. The goal is to leave a little of the 'washed' (darkened) codex grey underneath, so you get the slight effect of gradation from black to washed codex grey to pure codex grey.

6) Finish up the extreme highlights with 50/50 codex grey and fortress grey.

7) Alternatively, if you want really bright highlights, you can go with a final, final step of 75/25 fortress grey and codex grey.

Well, you could start by reading the first post in this thread. Just kidding. kinda.

Then before the deadline, which you'll find in the first post of this thread, you'll want to email a WIP picture along with your submission picture to dakkapaintingchallenge@dakkadakka.com

My painting is not prize winning, but this contest gives me an excellent idea of a model to build. Too bad I discovered it so late and I don't think I can get it in before the deadline. I'll build it anyway eventually - of course I won't divulge my idea before the deadline and I will look back to see if anyone else does the same thing I thought of.
