I was just wondering what your top ten were?  From any platform, type, etc.  This is for YOUR personal choice.  If you want to give reasons, feel free.

10 ? SSX3 (still in my collection)

~I got SSX for the PS2 on release day and enjoyed it.  But, I was REALLY surprised to play this game.  I loved the idea of racing down the whole mountain with out loading screens.  Still play this.

9 ? Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (still in my collection)

~I know, I know.  Nutty story and lots and lots of endless talking, but all of that aside, the gameplay was/is great, graphics were great and only game I can think of that you get peed on.  ;~)

8 ? Shadow of the Colossus (still in my collection)

~This is the one game I was really looking for to getting in 2005.  I love the artistic look and the gameplay.

7 ? Burnout 3: Takedown (still in my collection)

~Adrenalin central!  This game, for me, was SO addictive.  I loved it and played it as much as I could.  Straight racing or crashing into traffic.

6 ? Diablo 2 + the Expansion (still installed and played on my PC)

~Good old hack and slash action.  I included the expansion because the first game was good and the second made (at least to me) it even better.  Nothing like running around with a Necromancer and 4 to 5 Skellies and a Iron Golem, let them to all the heavy lifting.

5 ? Tekken 3 (still in my collection)

~This game was so sweet.  Worked/volunteered at a <st1:place w:st="on"><st1></st1><st1></st1>Teen Center</st1:place>, brought this in and huge groups around the PS playing this game from opening to closing.  I played and mastered King and all of his chain throws.  Hours and hours of addictive playing.

4 ? Resident Evil 4 (just for the PS2)

~Played this on both Gamecube and PS2.  Loved it!  Period!  Improved all around.

3 ? Final Fantasy VII

~The game that moved thousands of Playstations.  Loved this game, nothing like it at the time.  Watched FFVII:AC and got the urge to play this again.  Found it.  Playing it.  :~D

2 ? Resident Evil (Playstation)

~The reason I bought my first Playstation.  At the time, there was nothing like it.  Played it and had to clean my shorts the first time I played it.

1 - Resident Evil 2 (of course, still in my collection)

~This is the only game that I played for 28 hours straight when I first got it.  I still play this game from time to time.

So, where do you guys stand?

Edit:  Honorable Mention: Zork 1, 2 and 3  That was another game that I played for hours with my dad.  Loved the since of humor in that game.

Ok, I'll date myself. Here goes, my list is of games that are still burned into my memory, no matter how old.  These are games that have stood the test of time in my head and I still remember fondly.  The order is actually arbitrary.

10) Wizardry: 1st RPG on PC I ever played. It beat out ultima because it was first for me, but Ultima was also excellent.

9) All Infocom games, old school text adventures: Zork, Planetfall, etc.  Hello Sailor?

8) Wolfenstine/Doom, first game to ever get me to jump in the dark.  And the start of the FPS.

7) Wing Commander Serries.  First good space combat game for PC.

6) X-wing/Tie Fighter series: Best space combat sim games ever.  And only games I ever competed at a tourney with and won something.

5) Sierra On-line graphic adventure games: King's Quest, Space Quest, Larry, etc.  Old school fun.  They don't make 'em like that any more.

4) Starflight: First really good space RPG.

3) Warcraft/Starcraft/C&C  The games that started the RTS revolution are still my favs, although I really do like Dawn of War.  They get the nod because they were way first.  No one has truley inovated since them.

2) Any RPG by Bioware, Bauldurs gate and recently Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire.  Simply amazing games.

1) Halo Series: The only game I've ever played through more than twice, the game that re-invented the FPS experience for me, and the game that finally got me to try a console instead of living on a PC.  Halo is a "total package" game, there isn't one element that you can point to per se, rather it all comes togeather and works amazing.  Halo 2 currently holds the record for the top grossing 'entertainment' weekly sales.  It has blown away all movie box office records, music CD sales records, etc.  It is one of the reasons the Vid game industry is now the largest entertainment industry surpasing movies and music.

I have to go with some gaming "series" rather than particular titles, because if I included each and every Burnout game (for example) there would be very little on my list. Also, I have to give the nod to some "revelutionary games" that changed the way everything had been made since.

Please note that I've never enjoyed PC gaming much, so my bias is clearly towards the consoles.

10)  Shadow of the Colossus: Play the game and try to tell me that video games aren't art. This game is an amazing accomplishment and lets us all know where games might go in the future.

9) Psychonauts: The most creative game ever made. Seriously. So many great ideas, concepts, and characters in one game should not be allowed. The fact that nobody bought or played this game makes it a serious crime.

8) Super Mario series: Whether it was playing the original Super Mario Bros. on the NES for hours on end or Mario 64 on the N64, nearly every Mario game has captured an amazing sense of childlike wonderment in it. This is the series that essentially brought gaming back to life after Atari killed itself.

7) Resident Evil series: This was the first game that really, really frightened people (including myself). That stupid dog jumping through the window gets me everytime.

6) Doom: The first FPS to really get it right. Blowing imps away with that shotgun never gets old. That's the game I realized that you could really get immersed in a world and want to explore (and kill!).

5) Metal Gear Solid on PS1: Just that game (the others became derivative). When Psycho-Mantis had you put your controller on the table and he made it move. . .that is what a creative game can do. Blow your mind.

4) Final Fantasy VII: Many, many people will disagree, but I think this is still the greatest RPG ever. It certainly was a wake up call that RPG's were going to be bigger, grander, and more like epic tales than ever before.

3) Street Fighter II: In the arcade baby. Challenging strangers in a 7-11 to games of Street Fighter. Will a time like that ever come again (not likely since we have online games)? It really was a fantastic game and the last great arcade golden age.

2) The Burnout series: Best. Racing. Games. Ever. Period. They focus on the most important thing in racing: fun. They also have exciting semi-realistic crashes that make the game fun when you lose (crash) but also get you back on the street racing immediately. How many "realistic" racing games miss the fact that when you ram into a wall at 120 mph your car should be obliterated. Plus, now you're stuck reversing out of the corner. Is that fun? Is that realistic? No. It's stupid, pointless and destroys any immersion you may have had up until that point. Burnout GETS it.

1) Halo/Halo2. Best FPS ever. It just does everything right. I have played both these games over and over and over and over again just to appreciate the nuances I love about the games. I love giving my marines sniper rifles and having 'em watch my back. The multi-player never gets old. I love these games. I could go on, but I won't.

In no particular order and including some series.

Zelda: From Zelda 1 on the NES to the Ocarina of Time (the last Zelda game I played), a lovely game (with the exception of Zelda 2, such a travesty)

Fallout 1 & 2 and even Fallout Tactics: I love the Fallout universe and these games. I've played through each of them several times.

Civilization: There's only one game I've put more time into than this series. Haven't tried Civ4 yet.

Diablo 1&2: Hack and Slash through creepy dungeons gathering loot, oh yeah!

Final Fantasy 4 to 7: Didn't really play any of the later versions after FF8 turned me of. The music and story of FF4 was amazing for its time and is what got me hooked.

Mechwarrior 2 and Mechwarrior Mercenaries and Mech Commander: Eat PPC scumbag!! Strapping yourself into a huge Mech and blasting away the opposition in challenging missions. Later releases got graphically better but suffered in the gameplay department IMO.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms II: THE game that has claimed more hours of my life than any other game, played it on the Amiga 2000, played it on the SNES, still play it on the PC through an emulator. Great strategy game thoug I don't think a lot of people will agree. Take that Cao Cao!!

Super Mario Kart: The first game that was really cool to play against each other on the SNES. All kinds of different race modes to unlock but most important the battle mode where you went head to head against a friend for endless fun.

Dune 2: The granddaddy of RTS games, the one that started it all, sure it may be dated but in my eyes it still shines, you'll agree, here snif some Ordo mind gas.....

Close Combat IV, Operation Overlord: An excellent game engine that could be used to bring combat alive for many different universes. 40K, Fallout, you name it, tactical combat where it's at.

A honourable mention goes to GTA3 on the PS 2. A friend brought his PS2 over with this game and we ended up playing it for 3 days straight!! Just stopping for eating and sleeping and switching after each failure. After those 3 days I dreamt of it in my sleep, a few days later I had a PS2 with GTA3 for myself.

Great stuff!!

I'm with ya BAWTRM and Yak on the old school NES. Zelda 1 almost made my list, as the first console game that let you 'save', and I remember humming that damn them song all day long. Great console game.

Mario is definitly in there, along with original Sonic. Sonic really showcased how fast a platformer could be and still be playable.

Another ground breaking game that deserves at least honorable mention is the PC game X-Com. Possibly the ultimate turn based squad combat system.

Yak: I really must rent Psychonauts, I feel like I missed the boat on this one. I'm also with you on Burnout, I'm very much looking forward to Full Auto for the 360, which is basically burnout with guns. Reviews are so-so, but I loved the demo.

Great thread!!

X-com is a gem of a game!!

As for that original Zelda tune, I've got it here on my computer. It really is rather shrill and unpolished in retrospect but it laid the basis for the Zelda music. I think the Zelda 3 music is absolutely fabulous.

Tie fighter was an incredible space fighter sim that went together with a solid stoyline and innovative missions.

Oooh. X-Com and X-Wing. Two of the games that (back in the day) were good enough to actually get me to sit at a computer to play video games; oh how I loved them.

Russ: Yeah, you should (at least) Rent Psychonauts. There is a level where you shrink down to the size of a miniature and run around on a hex miniature gaming board. Every miniature gamer will absolutely love that level.

As for Full Auto, I hated the demo. The car physics absolutely suck. There is absolutely no sense of gravity. Every time I ran over even the smallest bump in the road, my car would go spinning into the air.

The reviews have tanked it. There is absolutely no story explaining why people are driving around with guns on their cars and they say it gets quite repititive after about 15 races or so. That sounds pretty accurate compared to what I played.

I had high hopes for the game, but after playing that Demo 5 times I realized it just didn't get it "right" like Burnout.

I don't think I can order them as I really love all these games for diverse reasons

Dawn of War
~I almost cried when I saw the intro movie, then I rewatched it about ten times

Resident Evil 4 (gamecube)
~had to take a breather every 5 mins of play, INTENCE

Mechwarrior 2: 31st century combat (PC)
~First computer game I ever owned, no sim has ever reach its level of atmosphere for me since. Would still play it if I could find it.

Everquest (PC)
~The game I came to know as 'Neverrest', first game to keep me up for almost 72 hrs
Dark Elf Necro WOOT! - Innurok (don't remember the spelling) Server

Heavy Gear II (PC)
~Um... yay, this game just rocks

Devil May Cry I (PS2)
~Okay so I'm a cool guy who has two impressive pistols, a big sword, white hair, a trench coat, turns into demons, fights demons, owns them and occasionally slaps the gods of the underworld around. CAPCOM is my homie

Star Wars: Battlefront II (PS2)
~It's good to see another Empire based singleplayer game. You rebel scum! LOVE the dogfighting in TIE's

Alien vs Predator (PC)
~I grew up on Alien and Predator movies, another crying moment. Lots of nice 'jump' moments too.
The sequel also gave me my fondest LAN game memories too

Battletoads (Super NES)
~I can hardly remember it but I know I loved it (the dead cartridge is still in my cupboard)

Descent: Freespace 2
~I lived this game, still play through about once a year

Damn I'm feeling all nostalgic now...

10. Command & Conquer (the original). Bought in 1995 when I was 12 because of the cool explosions on the box. Never heard of "RTS" but really loved the FMVs. I bought Red Alert the following year and waited without patience for the real sequel, which was a little disappointing.

9. Crusader: No Remorse. Bought as an EA Gold 'value' game a year or two after the fact. Loved the videos between missions and the isometric viewpoint. There was supposed to be a 3D sequel to the two original games called "No Mercy" but they never made it.

8. Super Mario Bros. I've played through all eight worlds and the "extra-difficult" repeats plus the four secret worlds several times. I like Super Mario 3 almost as much but I don't think it would count as a seperate entry.

7. Battlefield 1942. A mediocre game by itself but made addicting by the Battlegroup 42 mod which has about a hundred historically accurate vehicles from WWII. I am a huge WWII buff. Call of Duty 2 is also nice.

6. Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. A Lucasfilm game! Really entertaining 2D WWII "what-if" flight simulator with some wild fighters in it. Do. 335 was my favourite. A modern equivalent I also enjoy is IL-2 Sturmovik.

5. Homeworld 2. Mostly as a platform for the Star Wars: Warlords mod by EvilleJedi. Hehehe...EVERY Star Wars ship from the films, novels, comics, EU, whatever. Rendered professionally. I'm not kidding.

4. XEvil. Steve Hardt's amazingly profane Linux/Win32 side-scroller. Addictive multiplayer action. Came with RedHat Linux 5.2, my first distro. Even more fun than Duke Nukem and Commander Keen combined.

3. TIE Fighter. What a blast. Very immersive with an exciting plot, crazy fighters that pushed the envelope, and a mission with Vader himself! Not as difficult as X-wing but that might be what makes it more fun.

2. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. I played the beta of this game before I started collecting my Tau and Necron armies. I'm having a blast with the mod scene. Winter Assault is a pretty good addon and has actually done good things for the mod scene.

1. Ultima VI - The False Prophet. This was the first 256-colour game I ever played, in 1990. It came on almost a dozen 5.25" floppy disks. Very immersive world. The other games are also very good, for the most part (excepting VIII and IX). Yikes! How could I forget to mentioned Wing Commander, the 'original' cinematic video game series? 1 & 2 were my favourites, of course, I never played anything beyond those except for Privateer. I also have to list Unreal Tournament (1999) here because I managed to defeat some extremely good players at a LAN party tournament back in 2001 for the grand prize. That was a fun game.

1. Fallout. The best CRPG ever made.
2. Alpha Centauri. Pinnacle of the 4x genre, contender for the best game ever made.
3. World of Warcraft.
4. Doom, for obvious reasons
5. Quake - the first online shooter. I remember loading this up on the LAN when I went to college and being blown away. You mean I can frag other people on the internet? I don't have to restrict myself to 1-1 games with my friends via modem?
6. Starcraft. Best overall RTS ever, combining great art direction, awesome plotting, and fun gameplay.
7. Halo. The pinnacle of console shooters.
8. Thief 2. Hey look first person games don't only have to be about blowing stuff up!

Not sure what the other two should be. Probably console games of some sort.

1. Half-Life 2.  Nothing will ever be the same.  This is the first person shooter by which all new first person shooters will be judged for a long time.

2. Half-Life.  Same as Half-Life 2, except back in 1998.

3. Diablo 2.  This game took everything that made Diablo great, and made it better.

4. Diablo.  I was hooked on this game for a long time.  One of the first games I played constantly.  One of the best hack and slash RPGs ever.  The first game I played online.

5. StarCraft.  Since 1998, no other strategy game has held the title of "my favorite."  Without this game, I probably would never have been interested in Warhammer 40,000.

6.WarCraft II.  The game that introduced me to strategy games.  And how I learned to stomp some 'oomies.  Without this game, I probably would never have been interested in Warhammer.

7. Star Wars Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight.  In 6th grade I got all A's so my dad would buy this game for me.  The first first-person shooter I played online.  This is the Star Wars game that I have the fondest memories of.

8. Mortal Kombat II.  Quite possibly my favorite arcade game ever.  I remember the days when the arcade was king.  This game represents that for me.  "Get over here!"

9.  Super Mario World.  This is the reason I wanted a Super Nintendo.  I still play this game to this day.  You can't beat Mario.

10.  Wolfenstein 3-D.  This is the first first-person shooter I ever played.  This game really got me into computers in general.  Wolf  is what began my realization that PC is king.  DOOM solidified this idea.

There are others that are close as well.  Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy III, Chrono Trigger, Fallout, Mechwarrior 2, Tie Fighter, and others all come to mind.  But that's more than 10.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

1. Half-Life 2 - As already mentioned, Half-Life 2 is the pinnacle of the FPS genre, a game that all others will build from in the years to come, just like FPS until Half-Life 2 built up Half-Life. And, as long as Valve doesn't screw up the expansions, it is going to be very hard to top.

2. Half-Life - The king of the FPS genre, until Half-Life 2 took its place. This game revitalised the FPS genre. And to think it was based off the Quake 1 engine originally.

3. Total Annihilation - Still the best RTS ever made. It's going to take a lot to beat it.

4. Mechcommander Gold - The original MC, plus the expansion pack. Excellent game. Difficult, good, lengthy campaigns, pretty graphics (all sprite based, amazingly). Hours of fun.

5. Max Payne/Max Payne 2 - Hard to separate these two. Astonishingly well put together games. Excellent plot, music, acting, and killer action.

6. Red Alert - Total Annihilation is the only RTS I've played more than Red Alert. Red Alert was awesome.

7. Star Wars: Dark Forces 4: Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Outcase 2: Jedi Academy - Also just known as 'Jedi Academy', this game was the culmination of many years of Jedi Knight games. What began as a FPS, then onto a FPS/Third-Person game, to a mostly Third-Person game with enhanced Sabre fighting, had finally matured. Now all combinations were possible - one sabre, two sabres, saberstaff - and multiple special moves for them all.

8. Star Wars: Rebellion - A game that many mock, but this remains to this day the only game where you can take over the galaxy with massive fleets of individually named Star Destroyers. The latest SW game pales in comparison (and is extremely boring to boot!). Rebellion was awesome. A game I can play again and again.

9. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time/Prince of Persia: Two Thrones - Sands of Time was a remarkable title. Great plot, excellent graphics, highly original 'rewind' feature, and fantastic puzzles. The game was only marred by its difficult and repetative combat. Then there was Warrior within, which was both great fun and horribly flawed at the same time (although it has better level design than the other two), and then the final game which I just finished last week - Two Thrones. Everything about this game has been done correctly. Every mistake learnt from (well, almost, the chariot racing sections could've been left out... no... should have been left out), the combat improved dramatically (although lacking the awesome splittings and decapitations of Warrior Within), Speed Kills (that never gets old), more fantastic puzzels, no *fudge*ing Dahaka chase sequences, more excellent story, wraps everything up. I can't reccommend this series of games enough.

10. Mortal Kombat (1, 2, 3, 3U, Trilogy, 4, Gold, Deadly Alliance, Deception, Shoalin Monks and eventually Armadeggon) - I love Mortal Kombat. There is no greater fighting series out there. Great characters, great moves, fatalities, stage fatalities and probably one the deepest plotlines of any fighter, let alone most games. I cannot wait for the final MK game in the current story line - Armageddon. They're putting every MK character into it. Every single one!

Special mentions go to:

TIE Fighter - a game that realised every SW fan's dreams and let us play as the badguys for a change.

Fallout 2 - and outstanding RPG.

Worms - for just being so damned fun.

Homeworld and Homeworld Cataclysm - for getting 3D space combat right.

Dark Reign - for giving us AI that not only put up a fight but was vindictive.

Mechwarrior 4: Mercs - a game that took the otherwise crappy MW4 and made it into a decent game.

MW2/MW2:GLB/MW2:Mercs - for being incredible games for their time.

Grim Fandango - For being an excellent example of an adventure game.

C&C/Warcraft II - For sucking away so many hours of my time.

F.E.A.R. - For making shooting the crap out of stuff fun again, for giving the best firefights of any game before or since, and for scaring the bejeezus out of me.

I have to add Oblivion to one of the top 10 games of all time. I haven't felt this awed by a game since the early days of Wizardry and Ultima. Truley a masterpiece that trancends the genre and redifines what it is to be an RPG, and indeed, what it is to play a vid game.

Ah crap. Worms.

The first version of that game should be on my top ten list. I can't tell you how many hours I wasted in college playing worms in my dorm room with everyone. Guys and girls love that game. It's just great.

Sam and Max

Sam and Max!! Great catch and a great game. I was bummed when a rumored sequel was canned. Full Throttle wasn't bad either.

Using rabbits to clear a minefield stands as probably the funniest videogame moment of my earlier years.

Awesome.

Here is mine... No particular order. Some are series as well.

Jak and Daxter series. What a great platformer, and showed that knowing how to program on a consol can be a strong subsitute for raw hardware power.

Tie Fighter - Don't care much for flight sims, but this one just brought me in hook line and sinker.

X-Com - I lost too much sleep, work, social, and eating time to this game.

Blizzard - I'm a Blizzard fan boy. They make it, I'll buy it. Starcraft is probably my favorite though.

Squaresoft - (before they merged with Enix), again, they made it, I bought it. As cool as the FF series is, Vagrant story is the gem in my eye.

Star Wars (Knights of the Old Republic) - This made Star Wars games cool again. Havn't played the second one yet.

Dark Cloud 2 - Cell shading at its best. One of the best voice over work I've ever seen.. err.. heard. And the cell shading was spot on.

Silent Hill - This game (the first one) scared the crap out of me more than all of the resident evils combined.

Tenchu (series) - Stealth ninja assassination at its best. Great backgrounds and good feel. You actually had to be patient in this game. Twitchy got you the worst scores.

Street Fighter II - The game that revolutionized the head to head fighter. Others have raised the bar a little since but mostly due to processing power. SFII took the bar off the floor and made it mean something.

See pics of my Orks, Tau, Emperor's Children, Necrons, Space Wolves, and Dark Eldar here:

no particular oder as well

Final Fantasy 7 - the best part of the whle series. nobody's as cool as cloud

Resident Evil 4 - great Atmosphere and Gameplay. roundhouse kick crazy monks all over the damn village.

Metal Gear Solid the twin Snakes - part one is the best for one reason: Solid Snake as he originally was, and always should be. and the remake gets the "bullet-time-bounus"

Jak and Daxter Series - first one was the best Jump'n Run I've played in years. 2 and 3 had those Jump'n Run parts and combined it with a good third-person shooter AND racing sequences AND Hover Boarding. this is GTA in a cool Setting.
plus, the vehicles in part 3 are very orky.

Sly Racoon 1 and 2 - that, is how Jump'n Runs should be. al those new PS2 mascots are climbing up the plumbers throne.

Mario Games - Jump'n Runs, RPGs, Beat'em-Ups. I just love those games. they're just fun. I only wished they would be harder

Fahrenheit - that is no game, that is a frickin interactive movie!

Zelda - do I have to say more?

Metroid Series - great atmosphere and gameplay

Devil May Cry 3 - can a main Character be any cooler than this

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughing. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Great sig Anung, Clint is THE MAN.
