Thanks Russ, I didn't even know that some wouldn't work, how odd.  Thats a major selling point for me, backwards compatability. Im glad you posted that!

On your list, is it the ones that won't work on the 360 or the ones that do work on the 360?  Is it an exclusive list?

???

Why not give us a list of what won't work on the xbox 360? Or would that be longer?

This is the "WILL RUN" list, as released by Microsoft.  I don't know if games not on this list will definitly NOT run, or just if these games are SURE to run.

You can tell this is the "Will Run" list because Halo 2 is on it.

Actually, if you go to this official Xbox site, you can read the Q&A that says that the games must be certified before they will play on the 360. Until then you will get a message saying you cannot play that game on the system.

They say they are testing constantly to get more and more games out, so supposedly the list is going to be updated frequently.

For those of you not paying attention to this whole schebang, Microsoft switched chip and processor manufacturers between the Xbox and the 360 (they went from an Intel processor to an IBM PowerPC architecture and from NVIDIA to ATI).

Because of this, they can only achieve backwards compatibility through software emulation. Thus they must run and test the emulator for each game before clearing that emulator for download (if you don't have Xbox live you can burn a disc from the internet and insert it into the machine manually).

From their list I notice a lot of EA titles seem to be missing, from Madden to Burnout.

@Yakface

Thanks for the info, wow, thats very important!  Appreciate the link and your posts!

@Russ

Thanks for the update, Run list, got it, I suspected that after a second reading.

...

"If you don't have XBOX live.... Burn a disc from the net and put it into the machine..."?  The point of buying a console is so you don't have to do those kinds of things.  If I was willing to do that I'd just play PC games, where I need updaters and patches etc.  Looks like they should have waited in their race to market with the PS3, I think that's a mistake that will cost them in the long run.  I for one won't bother with buying a 360 until that glitch gets worked out, maybe later models will come pre installed with those drivers or at least have an updater disk you can instal them with.  What a drag. I'm glad I waited.  I haven't seen a release title that looks like a must own yet either...

Backwards compatability played a major influence in my decision to stay in the Sony camp at the release of the PS2.  I didn't even get an Xbox until last year.  It looks like Sony is positioned to win that point again this time.  Maybe I will wait and see what Sony is doing before I even buy a 360...

I'd like to ask another question about multiplayer online games and Xbox/Sony Online.  Do you think that the 360 could see the breaking point where (online multiplayer) console games are as good as PC titles?  I have been playing MMORPGs for a while, (not so much with the FPS, but them also) It seems if multiplayer online is your thing then a PC is the way to go, could the 360 change that?  I'd like to see some more games for online multiplayer that are not exclusively FPS or RPG, do you think there will be any, ever?

Have you been living under a rock or something?

From racing games, to sports games, to Mech games, to Poker games, to flight games pretty much everything on the Xbox released now-adays has a pretty solid online game.

IF you like the following three genres: FPS, MMORPGs & RTS, then you should continue to game on your PC (because a mouse and keyboard enhance these games quite a bit). Otherwise, you might as well enjoy the comfort of your couch because consoles seem to own every other genre for online play (IMO).

If anything will help microsoft win this upcoming console war, it will be Xbox live. The service is simply phenomenal, and the new features for the 360 look to be even more excellent. We'll see how some of the more novel features actually turn out.

As for backwards compatibility, for many people I don't think its an issue. For some, it is. I'd guess that within 6 months of the release of the 360 nearly every game that sold more than 100 copies will be compatible.

As for the emulator, remember that you get a free "silver" (non-playing) Xbox live account with every 360. That means if you have a broadband connection that update will be done in a flash.

Its only if you're living in some BFE area with dial-up that you'll need to burn a CD to enable backwards compatibility. Seems like a fair compromise to me, but then again, I have both Xbox Live and I don't really care that much about backwards compatibility.

Well said Yak!

I agree, X-box really ownes on-line play. Microsoft went out on a limb with some of the things they did back in 2001: Broadband only, single service, etc. But it paid off. X-box live is really the ultimate online experience for just about anything except RTS's, because no-one has figured out how to run a good one with a controller.

And to get backwards compatability you have to buy the 400$ one right?

Yes, you must have a hard drive to utilize backwards compatibility.

You could buy the cheaper version and then buy the HD, but that actually ends up costing more money than just buying the expensive package.
