How do!

With the Grand Embasening of my Heresy Dark Angels up soon, I’m in need of some cost effective textured acrylics.

I don’t want anything especially fancy, just something As-Good, but not as expensive, as the GW ones. And because I’m lazy, I want a coloured one rather than just the texture medium.

Any suggestions? Extra internet for links to UK Stockists.

I am after a good source of Agrax Earthshade, or equivalent. I have a few kits of Sector Mechanicus stuff, and that will eat through pots by the dozen.

So, 'following' as they say.

Mate there's loads of options, and they're all a better deal than the tiny pots you get from GW. Look at AK Interactive, Vallejo, MiG, Pro Acryl - most of the big manufacturers do big (100-250ml) pots for about £10-12...

Both are very inexpensive ways to base armies.

Guess I’m getting a pot or two of that Mig one! 250ml *should* be enough, but why skimp when it’s a decent price.

The question is, will I be able to resist adding some Heresy models to me basket as well.

Probably not, no. I am currently lacking Scorpius…

I'd totally forgotten I had a tin of Dark Tone from ages ago. Good call.

Strong Tone by The Army Painter is a good substitute for Agrax Earthshade.

As for texture paste, I bought a big pot of AK's Dry Ground texture paste for $20 off of Amazon.com as a replacer for Armageddon Dust. I haven't used it quite yet, but I'll let you know how it is.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. That AK's Dry Ground is $20 for 250 mL, while Armageddon Dust is around $8 for 24 mL, so you'll be saving money switching to AK.

Should last a long time as you also only need to lower the model behind the open can for good results!

Artist brands like Golden and Liquitex sell molding paste that can also work. Just have to add your own color to it.

Went with AK Interactive’s “Dark Earth”. 250ml pots for around £9? Monthter Monthter Monthter!

Quite nice to work with. Got a better flow than GW’s, without being watery.

Update? It takes a while to dry!

Four and a half hours, and only the outside of the base closest to the rim has dried (cured?).

No big shakes though, just means it’s not something you can slap on an hour ahead of a game.

I just tried AK's Dry Ground texture past and it's quite a bit grittier than Armageddon Dust, which just adds to the texture.

The pot says to leave for 24 hours to dry, but I gave it a couple hours to dry and then was able to add a wash over it.

Has anyone used good ol Wood filler for texture paint?
I been patching up some holes and it is very sandy, and dries rock hard.

Another thumbs up for the AK texture pastes. You can skip AK paints and whatnot if you fancy other brands, but their texture pastes are quite well priced for their volume. You can also thin them with water IIRC, which will increase your mileage even further

One thing tho - their instructions mention you can mix paint into the paste and this way, you wont need to paint the paste once its dry.. IME, this doesn't always work all that well, since the colors achieved this way might not be so easy to reproduce later. I almost always just slap the paste on as is, and paint on top later, even if that means one extra paint coat (and therefore added thickness and subsequent loss of tiny detal and minute changes of surface texture)
