This is the greatest issue of White Dwarf ever!

At least, if you love the LOTR game, because this issue is LOTRiffic.  20 pages of LOTR products clutter the intro section, followed by tons of LOTR articles, broken up by a good O&G preview for WHFB, and some ads for the various WHFB 7th editions.

All LOTR, all the time.

Not being a huge LOTR fan, I still understand being contractually forced to use 33% of space for the game.  But this issue tops 66% without breaking a sweat.

Thanks for the cover image from late 2003,

Chuck

I find it very informative. I would not buy it on the newstand, based on this review.

I thought this was going to be an informative review..

You're right, someone should write an informative review of White Dwarf, one that discusses the magazine's contents and the merits of each individual article.

I bet it would go over well here on Dakka.

You know this would be a great idea. Balanced informative reporting and indepth analysis always helps. I am sure people would find this useful and welcoming.

Hey, you ought to do it ... it could even be called "Chris Valera Reviews ...." so people can see how important you are and .... oh

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

I have not read a WD in ages (flickering through it at the store dont count), is it really that bad?

With the galaxy as large as it is the odds of the average guardsmen seeing and fighting a marine or MEQ are relatively slim. Unfortunately the guardsmen in your (and anyone else who plays IG's) army are the REALLY, REALLY LUCKY ones that fight marines ALL the time...

I really want them to be good....

the painting/modeling articles, when you get them, are good....

I don't like the new format of the battle reports, but maybe that's just me.

I have to agree. I don't like the way the've been doing the batttle reports lately. They don't cover the strategic thinking of the players very well.

jojo,
It's a two page spread.

It indicates that Azhag is a special character, it shows a shot of a completed army, and a kit made from the plastic Orc Leader sprue that Alex Hedstrom did. It also shows a Spider Rider (not from the BfSP) and two metal Night Goblin leaders. The book looks promising.

2112,
Apologies for the brevity and sarcasm. I lean towards the very forgiving of GW fans, but this issue was a bit beyond the pale. I just wanted to play with that.

You're absolutely right, let's not discuss anything!

... especially as there's just so many people willing to pick up the slack and write in-depth reviews of the magazine and-

oh.

For the record, my take is that the new WD is a marked improvement over the past year or so. I'm not to kewl with the US/UK split, but yet somehow, I'll manage. The UK guys seem to be more into the theoretical/sales aspect of GW, while the US stuff has a more realistic, hand-on feel to what they do. Like how real gamers do things, as opposed to the UK, where everything is fresh outta the miniature cabinets, painted by the 'eavy Metal team, and played in the officially official GW style.

Thanks for the heads up, Chuck. You just saved me six-fitty. I have nothing against LotR, but until GW makes a full size Smaug model, the game is dead to me.

I suggest capturing your own gila monster, attaching wings with
your red stapler, and spray painting him when the weather turns cold
and he decides to go inactive. Then, when playing a game, heat him
with an electric rock and watch to see if your opponent's army will
be devoured...or ignored.

Chris, full reviews of WD are welcome if they can follow the dakka forum rules.

I'm sure you could do that couldn't you?

OH.

My big annoyance, like most people (I raised the issue last month on anther forum and every member who responded agreed) with WD ATM, and for the last few months is the battle reports.

I can reunite peripheral nerves in surgery with a suture thread finer than a human hair, wax lyrical on the motor pathway from the cerebral cortex to the quadriceps muscle, and deliver babies.... but stuff me if I can follow what is going on in the battle reports with the new format.

The old maps showing terrain and individual models (or units for WHFB) really help show whats going on at a glance and their loss leaves me confused, disoriented and for the first time in 16 years not wanting to buy WD.

Nah, not really. Why should I? And yeah, the new batreps are a little off. But at least they mix it up a bit, throwing in four giants, etc. --Chris www.chrisvalera.com

Well better than the canadian one where they devote a fair number of pages on the Felix+Gotrek diorama which is pretty much useless since the scale is incompatible with any game system... ugh and the foil wrapping is rather lame...

Canadian WD.... less content... weird smelling paper... the only good thing is that it isn't shrink wrapped so one can look inside prior to purchase...

consider yourselves lucky, you could be getting the canadian WD...

Over there... no, wait, AARGH!

probably nothing, which is why I won't be buying. I'm not a LOTR guy, and I don't see why it's still taking up over 50% of the magazine. I mean, the last movie came out three years ago, and they're still plugging the game like day one. I realise they have contractual obligations, but come on... if they want to sell the magazine, it only makes sense to have something for everyone. Does anyone know when the contract on LOTR is up? I hate to gripe but I'm sick of it. I don't play fantasy but I'm still interested to see new releases and articles. LOTR just makes me turn the page.
I'm not a fan of the new battle report style, either.
Sorry if this has sounded depressing or ranty.

Still taking up 50% Please, I may not have kept up on WD lately, but I still recall when 12-18 pages for LotR was the norm, and as little as 6 pages for one or two issues. Even if this issue was 50% dedicated to LotR, such coverage probably overdue anyways ^_^

Only if you're a LOTR guy. When LOTR came out, I was under the impression it would be around while the movies were being released, then be relegated with the other 'specialist games'. They're still treating it like a new release. Sales wise, it doesn't make sense to concentrate on it so much when WHFB and 40k are their biggest sellers.

Then you obviously got the wrong impression.  LotR has a far, far larger fanbase to tap into, and it makes sense for GW to try and get a piece of the action, especially if rumors of The Hobbit coming to movie screens are true.  The line was still selling respectable numbers last I recall.
