In an attempt to get my arse in gear and get out of this painting slump, I have launched with no thought for time nor safety into yet another project. The talk in the 'developing your own games' thread got me to thinking about having another shot at that myself, now the Star Wars ones I was working on are pretty much done (just need to paint up some minis and get playing now!).

So I've dug through a bunch of pre-Warhammer metals to put together a few Warbands of varying races, and am now trying to simultaneously create a setting and a ruleset and paint minis to go with it.

My thoughts so far:
Spoiler:

- It will be Fantasy Skirmish, but with a kind of Eastern theme to it, rather than Western/European. Think Mordhiem-type thing (cursed city, treasure, brigands all about ect) but more Eastern/Oriental. This includes twisting some common Western Fantasy tropes slightly to get them to fit, and a bit of a dabble in Eastern mythology, which I have somewhat neglected in the past.

- I'm trying to avoid generic with the races, but am somewhat limited by the minis I have, and I don't want it to be forced. To that end, I have (tentatively, and likely to change) Sea Elves, 2-3 Human factions (one native Eastern, one Northern/Viking-style
and possibly a European-style 'Crusader' type army, Orcs of some kind (not sure whether to split into 2 factions, or keep it as one), Undead (mix of everything, mostly Skellies in various styles), and I'm toying with the idea of a 'Little Folk' pixie-type race (using 20mm figures) as something a little different, kind of to humans what WFB Goblins are to Orcs.

The rules are where I'm having most difficulty, simply on deciding direction. It will certainly be Skirmish, and mission/narrative based, but I can't decide whether to go D8 or D20 (D6 is not granular enough for the detail I want), and whether to go Target Numbers (Infinity-stlye) or Multi-Success (DeadZone-style). I shall probably end up roughing out both kinds and testing a bit, but I want something detailed but not bogged down in minutae.

Anyway, need minis first, so enough rambling, back to the paint deck! In the mean time, any suggestions are of course welcome, be they on rules, themes, minis or whatever!

Plan on hitting an art gallery tonight - a client of mine is displaying some pieces I framed for her for the monthly 'First Friday' art walk downtown and asked me to stop in. With the time I have before and after, I hope to finish off my forests.

All of the trees need a bit of pruning and a tape wrap around the twisted wire 'trunk' and the bases need another drybrush, possibly another dusting of color from the airbrush, and a matte coat before I add snow. I'm off tomorrow, as well, so anything I don't finish today will just spill over. Not sure what I'll work on next, anyway, so I may just put off the snow, so as not to rush any dry times.

Working on my PanO I guess. I've got the first Fusilier almost done, though I have to go back and do all of the steps on the separate arm. In the future i'll do everything together, and probably in mini batches of 2-3 models, but I wanted to get the model done so I could decide if I liked the scheme. Bit of a pain to paint but it looks more or less like I wanted.

May also work on some scenery, got a lot to do.

My Imperial Assault campaign kicked off tonight!

The Rebels were left with quite a conundrum on the final round. They had to destroy the computer terminal, except only Diala Passil (The Jedi) and the wounded Smuggler Jyn Odan were left to activate... Could they figure out a way to pull it off?

Spoiler:
Nope. They ran and looted the nearby crate instead and got a whole bunch of cash.

Today I'm gonna keep tinkering with X-wing lists, try to find something I would like to play. But that's just when I can't do anything else more productive.

If I get a good chance I've got several minis lined up that need to be airbrushed, and still several minis that are primed and ready to be hand-painted.

Had a semi-productive day! Dain arrived and got painted (amazing model, especially for a hand-cast of a scratch-sculpt!), and I knocked out a 7-man Sea Elf warband for the game/setting mentioned above. Now to write up some fluff, and maybe try and nail down some mechanics...

While thematically appropriate, I don't think I'll be applying snow to the (now otherwise complete) forest bases - hands aren't working too well with the heat busted (25 degrees outside, thermostat needle bottomed out at 50, so it's something lower than that inside) and maintenance is on the way.

Not getting much done here.

While the rest of the US is under snow, Oregon is having an early spring. This means the trees are all blooming early, so i'm having the mother of all allergic reactions to the pollen.

I'd rather have snow.

So, not getting any model painting done, and i can't see well enough out of my swollen eyes to trust myself with a craft knife.

I'll probably basecoat something big, like my FOR. I should be able to see well enough for that at least...

I am finally getting down to finishing the first unit of Heavy Great-Goblins (36 miniatures) for my Hithaeglir Goblins/Orcs for our Middle-earth games.

I will still need to base them, but I am just down to doing clean-up on everything but the command group, and finishing up the last 9 shields.

That will just leave me another 36 Heavy Great-Goblins, 54 Medium Great-Goblins, 8 Light Great-Goblin Archers (and 8 more that need to have the bits painted: buckles, knife sheaths, eyes), 36 Heavy Lesser-Goblins, 54 Medium Lesser-Goblins, 24 Medium Lesser-Goblin Archers, 8 Light Lesser-Goblin Archers, 36 Snaga,14 Wolf-riders (2 are already finished), and 8 Trolls.

The total breakdown is:

• 2 units of 9 elements, each of 4 Heavy Great-Goblin Warriors, One unit being the Great-Goblin C-C's bodyguard.
• 2 units of 9 elements, each of 3 Medium Great-Goblin Warriors and Archers (mixed unit)
• 2 units of 4 elements, each of 2 Light Great-Goblin Archers

• 1 unit of 9 elements, each of 4 Heavy Lesser-Goblin Warriors, as bodyguard to the Lesser Goblin General/Commander.
• 2 units of 9 elements, each of 3 Medium Lesser-Goblin Warriors.
• 1 unit of 8 elements, each of 3 Medium Lesser-Goblin Archers.
• 2 units of 4 elements, each of 2 Light Lesser-Goblin Archers.
• 1 unit of 6 elements, each of 6 Snaga (Hoards)
• 2 units of 4 elements, each of 2 Wolf/Warg-Riders (Mixed weapons, melee/missile)
• 1 unit of 4 elements, each with 2 Trolls.

• 1 C-C command stand with the Great-Goblin King, standard, and musicians
• 1 Sub-General command stand with a Great-Goblin Lieutenant and Standard bearer.
• 1 Allied-General Lesser-Goblin stand with the Goblin King, Standard, Musician, and personal guards and scouts.
• 1 Allied-General Wolf/Warg Rider Captain, with Captain and Standard Bearer

I got this all organized and the model's bases prepared (which amounts to positioning each model, and then scribing a sheet styrene plastic card with the model's positions, so that I can cut a hole in the plasticard.

This hole allows the bases to be flush with the top of the miniature's base when I go to finish the basing. It saves time with making a clean, flush base, so that the miniature does not look like it is standing on a little hill, and it creates flush sides with the Litko plywood bases.

Now I just need to concentrate on painting, so that I can get these and the Rohirrim finished by Summer.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And the Slave-1 doesn't look too oversized.

I just checked a still of Han being loaded, and it is a pretty big ship compared to an X/Y-Wing. The cabin is big enough for Boba Fett to stand up in, and looks like another four people would be able to fit as well.

I would need to see it compared to the Millennium Falcon to get a real idea of its size. The cabin on the Falcon (from looking at ESB) is just a bit smaller than Slave-1 from the look of it, but only barely (The Falcon's cabin is deep, where the Slave's is wide).

It is absolutely beautiful weather outside this weekend. I really have the urge to get out and do something in this great weather, and I also have the urge to get out and paint. Might just run down to the shop and paint for a bit. Still debating.

The next step after we finish our escalation campaign is a defensive one, (1150 points, must have one fortification) so I've been trying to build a list for that as well.

I have the urge to spend money, yet I don't want to just bleed out of my wallet aye yi yii...

Started work on the rules for my new Fantasy skirmish, tentatively titled The Legends of Old Turag.

Went for a D8-based system, with stats acting as modifiers for various rolls (combat, for example, is Attack+D8 vs Defence+D8). I think it's granular enough that stats can matter and I can get enough variety between factions. At present I'm testing out the combat system, albeit very roughly, but it 'feels' decent enough. Just need to play around with the stats themselves, and try and work out a way of costing the profiles (which will have to be a little more complex than my previous 1 point=1stat increase system )
