A Protoss colony world

Putting finishing touches on my DV Helbrute. Just need to do the base and paint some flatcoat over where I put a couple of transfers (Khorne symbols). Tomorrow I will see how fast I can paint. I will try to completely paint a 5-man Dark Angels Assault Squad. They're already assembled, and one has already had his armor painted green, but otherwise they have only been primed. Wish me luck!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 13 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

The penultimate mission of Imperial Assault tonight and... The Rebels didn't do well. They started off ok, but ended up getting completely bogged down in the trash compactor (literally).

In any case, they were slowed down long enough for me to bring none other than Darth Vader in. He took a lot of damage, sure. But he managed to pretty much wound half the heroes in a single turn... Then won the game by taking out Diala.

Ouch, Vader in for the win, huh? I'm gonna try to run a couple of Imperial Assault scenarios tomorrow myself, but I'm presently unconfirmed on any number of players or interest level/boardgaming competency, so may just get through the tutorial and Aftermath. Still eager to get the set out since I finally got the last couple pieces painted this week though.

Definitely going to copy you Compel, and whip up some 3d representations for important scenario objective counters and probably some crates to boot.

We tend to take a while on the missions (Usually 2 hours for a side mission, up to 3 - 3.5 hours for a main one).

However, I think that's because my mates suffer from 'analysis paralysis' a lot. They're go through all sorts of crazy thought processes and insane plans. - Then forget that Vader can stab 2 people standing next to each other at the same time.

Bwahaha, I tend to have the analysis paralysis thing too. But unless I'm playing at some kind of tournament I also have a secret reserve of 'it's just a game so make a brash move and throw some dice' so I can usually keep from taking toooo long.

I suspect in the 4 hours allotted for the library game day thing, we'll get through the tutorial and aftermath. I'll check the next couple of scenarios just in case, but I'm not planning to get through much.

Well, we did manage to get through the tutorial, aftermath, AND spice run. The heroes did fine during the tutorial. They nearly had the consoles blown in aftermath, maybe 5 total health remaining between the last two, they could have had it with just a couple more activations.

Spice run was similarly close. Everything on my side was dead except for some trandoshans I spawned that same turn. The E-Web gunner that spawns when you enter the spice room managed to knock Jyn Odan down and out before being demolished by Finn (it took two shots at him too, but both came up about a space short =/). But that action was apparently enough. Finn had to scoop up the access card on his way to the other door to let the wookies in to make an attempt on the last spice barrels. The party managed to seize 5/6 barrels but ran out of actions and activations on that last turn.

I believe we have to run the mission indicated by the text in Aftermath if we play again next month... which would mean the poor rebels would have to survive waves of imperials assaulting them, including Vader himself! Dun dun DUNN.

Additional observations... Jyn Odan is squishy. She's got some defense/escape mechanics, especially after she starts getting XP, but you've got to be on the ball when it comes to using them. I focused fire at Jyn in both games and she had to retreat to heal in the first, and got taken out in the second. It's entirely possible that she could have clinched either game if she hadn't retreated/gone down. I think the first game involved more of an issue with the players being too defensive/caring in regards to Jyn, had they been more aggressive... even if Jyn got dropped in that game another round of shooting was almost all they needed to win. In the second game, well... having an injured character pop open a door is turning out to be a bad idea in most scenarios, it seems. Though the party was pressed for time and probably had no other choice.

Gharkan (however you spell it, the Wookie...) is freaking *brutal*. Red dice seem to have a larger number of sides with a higher number of hits, and his ability to charge plus attack makes him even better at clearing out clusters of troops than Finn. They got him the extended haft item too, or whatever you call it, so now he's got reach! It's like having a high strength two-handed weapon fighter in D&D with cleave all over again!

Still proving to be a fun game, glad I purchased it. The guy that runs the RPG/D&D kind of games during the game days is apparently moving/changing shifts/etc so I could probably step in to do that moving forward, but its kind of fun to do boardgames like imperial assault and x-wing too. Decisions...

Yeah, Garkhaan is a jerk. - Remember he can only 'charge' once per turn though (You can only perform a 'special' action once per turn). A good way to deal with him though is to try to keep him at odd numbers of strain. - If he has 1 strain, charging is a hard decision, cause it's going to leave him near max. If he is at 3 strain, no charging for him!

Jyn, yeah, she's a pretty easy target. Though a general piece of advice I have for the game is that more often than not, killing heroes is a waste of a thing. - Just flip their cards over and move on to the next victim. Generally speaking, the Strain abilities are what make the heroes good and they're pretty closely balanced. So when they're stuck at -1 Endurance from being Wounded (EG, Jyn goes from 4 to 3 I think), suddenly they're not so scary.

Until he buys some high level upgrades, Fenn is the second weakest after Jyn (sometimes the weakest, depending on how hot Jyn's dodge dice is).

Remember, E-Webs get a permanent +3 accuracy bonus. Generally speaking, it's very, very, very rare they fall short. In fact, in general throughout my campaign most of my fights take place within 3 spaces of each other.

As the Imperial player, read the Victory Conditions for Under Siege very carefully. - It's entirely possible for that mission to be a draw.

To be honest, injured characters opening a door is probably a good idea. After their wounded, they might as well be a meatshield that occasionally kills things.

Both Gaarkhan and Diala are tanks - Especially if Diala has little strain.

In the interests of being fair and balanced, despite being an Imperial player, the single most important thing for the rebels and this really is vital. On the 'Rules Reminder' cards, there's a section that is called something like 'Easily forgotten rules'.

"In an attack, a hero may spend a surge to recover a strain."
"A hero may take up to 2 strain to gain up to 2 movement points during their activation."

Beat the rebels over the head with these. These really are *massively* important for the rebels to stand a chance in the campaign. If one of these aren't being used every round, the rebels aren't using them enough.

As for me tonight? (And this morning(!), we finished at 12:30)

They were originally titled "Mraaaw'rawwwm" due to having all the wookiees. However, after their performance at the tournament today, they're going to be called "Chewie and the Saboteurs". - They also perform in clubs on weekends.

In that spice run scenario, Jyn opened the door and got annihilated by the 'one imperial model takes an action' trigger from the e-web. The others were pretty much across the map, I think Finn was maybe 8 spaces away and I didn't roll good accuracy results. It was very much a fluke.

I've reminded them about the extra moves plenty, they very nearly won the spice mission because of edging in extra strained movements, but they simply had one activation too few left (jyn being down instead of opening the second door). The other thing to recover strain they've been doing whenever they've got surges left after their target goes down, though it hasn't come up as much.

Is that a force for the Skirmish variant of the game? Haven't really looked into it yet myself. The dice bag is nice, as are the alternative art cards.

Yeah: Chewie, Gaarkhan, 3 Rebel Troopers, Mak, GIdeon Argus and 2 Rebel Saboteurs.

The skirmish is good fun, not as awesome as the campaign but it's good fun - Kinda feels a bit like Space Hulk.

It's definitely a great thing to have in the game and I'd recommend trying it out.

WOOOOHOOO!

FINALLY finished painting (well, re-painting, since I had to strip them and start over about a month ago) the four units of Greater-Goblins I have been working on.

One unit of Medium Infantry Warriors. One unit of Light Infantry Archers, One unit of Medium Infantry Archers, and One unit of Warg/Wolf-riders.

Now I just have to base them.

That leaves just one more unit of Heavy Greater-Goblins, and seven units of Lesser-Goblins (One Heavy Infantry, One Medium Infantry Archers, Three Medium Infantry, and Two Light Infantry Archers).

The Lesser-Goblins will be a LOT easier to paint.

The pain with them, though, is that they will be replaced with my own sculpts toward this fall or winter.

After Goblins comes Rohirrim, Haradrim, and Gondor.

MB
P.S. I just realized... That is 108 figures I have painted this year, with another 72 almost finished. Although I have 72 more Rohirrim I need to do to finish the Rohirrim Army to my satisfaction - not counting the dismounts for all of the cavalry - I need to do sculpts for some of them.

I'm planning on getting a few more things as well, namely chariots so I can run them as Ancient British; and I could do with some more archers too...

I'm increasingly feeling I need to paint something asap. Between running low on a few paints, distractions in the form of Arkham Knight and hectic real life stuff, the last week has been utterly unproductive. I don't feel look like batch painting any of my Strain, but at the same time I'm actually struggling to find anything one-off to do...

Time for a dig through the to-do pile, I think...
