Painting Within the Lines

Started building an painting models from Warlord's Test of Honour Samurai game.

Only the black armour, red cloth and skin tones done so far on one of the small starter factions.

Samurai models are a pig to build, light infantry are better, both have the typical Warlord problem, paired arms and legs with nothing on the frames to show you which goes with which...

Nice work. I just finished assembling my samurai. Fiddly little sods, every one of them. I am fully expecting something to snap off first time I use them. I was particularly unimpressed at the neck hole in the torsos to locate the head peg and then realising that only one of the supplied heads actually has a neck peg so the rest have to be glued to the rim of a hole instead of a decent contact patch. Wargames Factory's sprue designers really didn't concentrate on what they were doing.

Glad to hear the ashigaru are a bit easier to build.

I'm doing all of mine in monochrome so the whole game looks more like a Kurosawa film. And because I am a very lazy painter.

Monochrome sounds like it could work very well actually, not good enough at working the shades out for that but would love to see them.

Finished group shot (well lacks static grass but otherwise done)

Agree the sprue designers were asleep on the job in some areas, for the love of gork, please when putting paired arms/legs etc on frames mark them so you know what goes with what...

Waiting on more 25mm steel bases before I can do any more of them.

Was trying out new skintones, since Lady Shiva is on the list to paint.

I'm pretty sure my terrible painting and lack of understanding of well, any aesthetics has resulted in me insulting a good 20% of the worlds population.

Though I'm not entirely sure what 20%...

And also my attempts at highlighting have ended up looking like bikini lines.

This painting thing is hard.

Working on getting my 400 points of Eldar ready for an event Friday. I have 9 helmets and installing magnets on 4 jetbikes left to get to table top standard. I'm leaving everything without clear coats as on the bikes I need to apply black striping, and on the dire avengers and warp spiders I need to apply highlights.

A Protoss colony world

I'm trying to finish up a bunch of Dark Angels models that have been sitting partially painted for about a year. Once I finish those I can move on to more exciting things.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 13 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

Have one in bits on the windowsill, plus a Mk1 Predator which sadly needs the turret sawing off as its about the only glued joint on it thats firm... (flipping typical really) old eBay finds that need a bit of TLC, and oh yes they bring back memories, pity the Mk1 land raiders go for so much these days.

I dug out a pile of half-painted Orks of various sorts, including good representations of their special operatives along with an Ogryn with maul and shield to act as Imperial Guard special operative. Let's see how many I can do of these.

To true leopard. Getting the Sisters of Battle parts to fit on the chassis is proving to require an awful lot of sanding and now building replacement parts for those I do not have...like the front door with tracks.

Still working on them, but two mostly look like Immolators now.

Finished my second chaos rhino, slightly less bling on this one to make painting easier so went from the base gold applied last night through the two highlight golds and clear red today after about an hour masking, few details and done - and looks a lot nicer than the clear red applied by brush one that took a week to get four coats on the thing.

Have to get hold of a 30k one and have a go with the silver base and full on thousand sons colours.

Finished the day assembling and basing the masked men box for Test of Honour which I hope to prime tomorrow, think the yellow/brown/red/white colours Warlord use are ok but likely to swap the yellow for green (better to lurk in the shadows with)

Test of Honour event on the 15th so wondering about letting them have a run at that
