I'm sorry, but OotS (that's Order of the Stick) has it beat. TSoaLR is the best 40k comic, to be sure.

Agreed. The Order of the Stick is my all-time fave comic. But, Turn Signals is pretty cool, and the best 40K comic around.

I'm a big fan of The Perry Bible Fellowship webcomic myself...

I can't pick one favorite, so I'll just stop there.

PBF is good too. Non-sequitur and surreal to the extreme, but it's too sporadically updated to keep up on. Or, at least it was when I stopped reading.

Somewhere in south-central England.

I thought you meant paper comics and was going to vote for Marshal Law.

OOTS is a fantastic web comic. There have been a couple of times it almost made me cry, which is a tribute to the brilliant script and the power of imagination. It's amazing that the antics of a bunch of stick men in a fantasy universe based on an RPG can mean so much.

I also enjoy Penny Arcade which is a very different style and somewhat variable.

Mega Tokyo is another one I have been following for a long time and find it pretty frustrating, but every time I am about to give up something pulls the story back together.

PBF is carried in The Guardian on Fridays. I never cottoned to it and very rarely find it at all funny.

I'd have to say Exterminatus Now is one of my favorites.

Mixes Sonic The Hedgehog-style characters with Inquisition fluff. Nicely done, and regularly updated.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person, who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

I could keep listing. I've got 20 comics I visit three times a week. The list is constantly in flux, what with the adding and deleting. I'll mention the venerable Sluggy Freelance and Three Panel Soul.

For pure fun Gunsmith Cats (it's about hot chicks, guns and muscle cars) is hard to beat.

Deathnote was a great thriller.

Nausicaa and the Valley of Wind is my all time favorite.

And Blood Quest: The Quest for Blood is the best 40k comic ever.

Mr Gonads, if you enjoyed Watchmen, which I agree is an astonishingly brilliant masterpiece, you will probably enjoy Preacher. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Watchmen is a masterpiece in the field, obviously. Preacher is a classic. Gaiman’s Sandman, of course. Strangers in Paradise is a great “real world” comic for grownups. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is another great Alan Moore work. The Pinis’ Elfquest (original series and the two limited series after it, before they started letting other creators do inferior versions) and Dave Sim’s Cerebus (particular the first half of the series, before he got too deep into his own personal issues) are landmark works among the independents. The first Japanese comic I ever read was Mai the Psychic Girl, which was a great series, and possibly the first manga ever fully published in an English-language version, by Eclipse back in the mid-eighties.

OOTS is my favorite webcomic. Really excellent. Penny Arcade is very well done, but I don’t really play videogames, so most of it kind of misses my interests. Foglio’s Girl Genius is great. TSoaLR is obviously near and dear to our hearts, and Dakka was one of the first places (that I'm aware of) to really discuss it and where the creator publicized it when it came out.

I agree that OotS is one of the better ones out there. For those of a Geeky nature (who, us? ) UserFriendly is a great webcomic about a group of IT support guys.

Did y'all know they're making a Watchmen live-action movie? Hopefully they don't do to it what they did to The League...

They've been 'making a Watchmen movie' for decades now, but I had heard one was actually coming out soon-ish. With you on TLoEG movie being a big sad flop

And Top Ten gets my vote for "Amongst the Best Comics Ever," though I do say Transmetropolitan deserves to top that list.

I didn't even think about paper comic strips, but of course they need to be counted if web comics are. Calvin & Hobbes, a thousand times. Yes. The Far Side is a classic. Bloom County & its sequel Outland. Doonesbury. Foxtrot. For Better or for Worse has been going since 1979, and has actually allowed the characters to grow, age, develop, get married, have kids, and die. Pretty amazing.

Back to actual comic books, good mention of The Invisibles, Malfred. Sin City also has moments of greatness. Including the entirety of That Yellow Bastard. A lot of great work is done in limited format series, which can then be conveniently collected into graphic novels. Alan Moore's great Batman story, The Killing Joke. Frank Miller again, with 300. Gaiman's Books of Magic and Stardust are genuinely great.
