Is it okay to hold a parking space by standing in it while someone else goes to move the car?
Sure. It's first-come-first-serve and standing in the spot is just as good as having a car parked there.
No way, it's poor etiquette. Parking spaces are for cars and people aren't cars.

I remember doing this as a little kid for my parents once and I thought it was funny at the time. However, being older and wiser now I have to say that I think it was definitely poor etiquette.

I liken this to exploiting a rule on a the table top. You may technically be allowed to do it, but you're going to get 0s in sportsmanship.

Only if it's okay to "park" another car outside the spot so
that the intended car can't get into it.

At the shopping centres I go to where parking is free and un limited length I'd say it would be poor ettiquete but in the city where it can be an absolute bugger to get a park I'd say go for it.

Also key (scratch) the car of anyone who steals your parking spot and flips you off/yells at you.

Seeing somebody (usually rather rotund) standing in a parking space makes me want to do horrible horrible things to that person in particular and humanity in general.

I don't know why.

It depends on how long you are talking about. If the person is standing there while you bring your car up from around the bend then it is not an issue. If you're talking cooking up burgers while he's waiting then there is a definite issue.

Horrible Etiquette.

Do that with me & you're in for a surprise.
I'm old school.
You know... Back when YOU watched out for CARS, instead of the other way around. Back when your parents warned you about walking in front of cars, instead of traipsing around the middle of the driving lanes in a parking lot.

See, I'm driving a CAR. YOU are a miniscule meat-sack.
Unless you are Magnus Ver Magnusson, when my CAR connects with you, you will move.

I slowly approach the spot.
You wave me off with some warning on how the spot is "saved."
I grin maniacally and continue.
You repeat waving and notification.
I stop right in front of you, then inch my way forward, pushing you out of my way.

Car=win.
Meat-sack=lose

There is no "spot saving" allowed by puny meat-sacks.
Want to "save" the spot? Save it by getting YOUR car into it before I get MINE there.

Come on Magikal I doubt you really do that in real life.

I've almost never seen this situation come up in real life. Threatening to commit battery with a deadly weapon (vehicle), ram someone else car with yours (woops hopefully your incurance company doesn't know), etc. are just childish and mainly towards serious violence.

Actually, JF, though I'm a fairly nice guy and I TRY to get along with everyone as best I can, there are certain issues that just set me off easier then the rest. General rudeness/being inconsiderate is one (are two?) of them.

Truth is, I have and would do it... but I think you missed part of my post.
I'd never ram another car. If they got there before me, then it's all good.

Also, re-reading my post, I did miscommunicate something.
I have never had to physically contact someone with my car and never would. By referring to pushing them out of the way, I just meant that, as I inched forward, they would back up. I HAVE done that and, as the car I drove was a junker, any keying or scratching they might have done in retaliation after I left was inconsequential. I also made a show of writing down the license plate # of the car that showed up that the person was trying to hold the spot for. With parking lot cameras and that information, anyone stupid enough to try something would see me again... in court.

IF I ever encountered someone stupid enough to stand in front of a moving car & not get out of the way, I'd simply stay there, blocking the spot. I think that the lost time, IMO, is worth it to point out to the person how inconsiderate their attempts are. I DO believe that it's the job of everyone to let someone know when they are being an a55. It takes a village to do more than just raise a child.
I didn't used to be that way. I used to just try to shrug the jerks of the world off & go on my merry way. After an adult lifetime of ignoring it (and having MY stress level increase because their actions stressed me out & I did not release the stress), I had enough one day, about 3 years ago, and just unloaded on a guy (verbally, of course; Though I'm capable of defending myself, I am NOT the violent type)... MAN it felt good.

Now, I say what I think and how I think it. I'm a "straight-shooter," so-to-speak, and it feels great. I no longer have a stress level. None.

Tailgate me? I slow down until you get fed up & go around... you receive a 1-finger salute as you pass... I laugh openly at your response.
Cut me off? I don't make an effort to pass you but, if I happen to pass you... saluted... this is in addition to the horn honking & salute you get WHEN you cut me off.
Rude to me? I tell you just when I think of it. I give you the benefit of the doubt, if it's unclear that you MEANT to be rude... but when it is clear, I speak freely.

Now, I do TRY to ignore inconsequential idiots (like morons on the internet, for example), but I refuse to be stressed over another person's actions any longer.

I've seen too many things were people "flip" each other off etc. and get responses way out of wack to that.

I've accidentally cut a person off and had them follow me and want to fight. Very stupid.

I've seen one person flip off another and have that person slam there car into them in reply. Not nudge or tap, but slam.

You probably wouldnt think that was nearly as funny if I said I don't want to hit that BLACK person there, I dont want that all over my car ( I've actually heard that one more than once). Then again you can write an entire thread about obesity and discrimination.

Anyhow, I think that it would be horrible ettiquite, but something I've tried to do recently is to consider the other side of the story? Is there a reason this person is so desperate to hold the parking place? Ultimately, let it go, there will always be other parking places in the future.

What astonishes me is that people who would greet you with a smile that get in a motor vehicle suddenly become aggressive and nasty. I was driving home from work yesterday ( not exceeding the legal posted limit) and I had to get over to make my exit. I signaled at least 20 meters before I planned to change lanes, when shortly after a young woman in a small, sporty vehicle moved into the lane ( at least 100 meters behind me) I inteded to pass in to. Well, I could immediately see she was driving at an unsafe speed. I went ahead and passed into the lane, since I had given sufficient notice of my intent to do so, and the lane was clear, and would remain so for vehicles travelling at legal speeds. This woman showed no indication of changing her ( illegal ) rate of speed, and passed me so close that she put us at risk for a collision. The woman then extended her hand through the sunroof of her car (unsafe) and made a rude gesture.

I have no idea why people behave this way. Even if someone is at fault, they havent personally attacked you, it is in all likelyhood a mistake. I was more shocked that a woman would behave this way.

Poor etiquette, yes
Totaly unreasonable and deserving of much of a response, not really.

I live in an area where parking is scarse (get home after 6pm and you walk .5 - 1 mile to get home after finding a spot. I understand this and saving a spot for someone who's comming quickly isn't really so much of an issue. It is a tease though.

No, with all due respect to the established posters of Dakka, it is very apropos. Stonefox just made a discriminatory remark, which in itself I have no problem with, but apparently has a problem with the similar remarks applied to what we call "races". Apparently he things that it is peoples fault that they have problems with obesity, in spite of the fact that I have observed very close friends of mine spending their savings for surgery to correct the problem. I just would like to hear the difference there. Since apparently he is also a moral authority on what is "nazi" or not. Thanks for your time Stonefox.

I used to be a fatty but did something about it. I have friends who are fatties who I encourage to hit the gym and I gladly go with them. However, I feel no pity towards fatties who don't wish to improve their condition. So yeah, I discriminate against something people choose to do. I also discriminate against whiny emo kids and club partygirls. But at least the latter are more pleasing to the eye - usually.

First of all, we don't want your frigging pity. We want you to go the *F* away. Former "fatties" like you are the worst. You come across as if you're entitled to make senseless judgements, simply because you used to be "one of them."

Secondly, "...improve [our] condition?" Are you serious? Should we pity people who are insensitive jerks because they don't "improve their condition?" It's not a *F*ing condition. It's fat.

I'm fat. Guess what? I'm probably healthier than half the NON-fat people on this board. My cholesterol is beautiful. My blood pressure makes my Dr. jealous. My heart beats between 64 and 70 times a minute. Look up the stats on that.
My body doesn't creak and groan. Neither do I. There's nothing wrong with my health. I'm active. In anything but a race, I could keep up with you every day of the week.

That's a pretty good "condition" to have in most NORMAL people's books.

People like you, who think fat people are to be judged for being fat, are the ones with conditions that need improving. Just because you THINK everyone can and/or SHOULD do something about it doesn't make you right. It makes you prejudiced.

Did you know that there was a time when people of color bleached their skin and hair in an attempt to fit in better with whites?
Since it's something they CAN do, then should they?
