I haven't had time to play much and think I want to get a new game, probably either first person shooter or strategy.  Any recommendations?  I saw an add for Brothers in Arms yesterday, and thought it looked mighty cool.  Has anyone played it?

Also, My primary beef with the first person games on xbox is that I got accustomed to playing Quake on my PC and I can't manipulate the controller nearly as fast as I could with my mouse.  Am I missing something?  Anyone have any tips that can get my xbox skills up to par?

I hear that Ninja Gaiden is excellent.

As far as manipulating the controller quickly in a FPS, it just takes practice.  Although I think a  mouse and keyboard is always faster and more precise, assuming players with equal skill levels.

There are so many good titles! I don't know where to start, well, OK maybe I do. THESE ARE ALL MUST OWNS:

You' have to be living in a cave in Tanzania not to know about HALO 1 and 2. Get it play it love it.

Ghost Recon 2 with the maps and expansion is amazing also, a must own.

Mercenaries is awesome too, destroying hordes of attacking Chinese jeeps with a recoiless rifle never gets old, watching them scream and fly in the air on fire or ram eachother's wrecks is a riot!  But calling for B52s on downtown Pyong Yang never gets old either!

Grand Theft Auto anything, I honestly don't know anything about Hot Coffee.

and believe it or not:

Chess Master

It probably depends what you want to do.  Honestly, if you like playing with other people, and are a 1st person shooter devotee, then you must get Xbox online.  It's a great investment and very fun, there are always multiplayer games to play and it's a cinch to hook up. I never even had any latency problems, it is awfully nice not to have to tinker with in game setting, graphics cards and latency issues with the Xbox just plug and go (till you have to leave the house for more cheetos and mountian dew).  If instead you see yourself playing solo more often then I really recomend Chess Master (and GTA whatever), it has audio based instructional tutorials for all levels, puzzles, solutions, tactics, explanations, recordings of famous games, and about 30 different chess sets including traditional, modern and even animated! The 3d board can be spun and there are AI players that use specific tactics and are ranked with ratings to their skill level, oh yea, and it is online also.  It is hands down my favorite game on the Xbox, even though I also love 1st person shooters.  Anyone who has not had an Xbox link party should really give that a try, its phenominal! I used to do that with GR2, but my friend, who always shot me up, is in foriegn lands as activated Army reserve...

Not a huge fan of FPS on the console, like yourself. I prefer fighters, sports, and arcade stuff on the couch.

Ninja Gaiden is haaaaaaard. Good game, but very difficult. If you're after a challenge though, that;s a good one.

The original Prince of Persia (the sands of time) is an AWESOME platform game if you are into such things. If you enjoy leaping from once place to another, this is possibly one of the best games of that type in recent years.

The Burnout racing games are, without a doubt, the most fun I have had on a console since the NES. The new installment is incredible, and it's a game that you can pick up and play without donating years to it. Very arcade like, very fun, very fast.

For an alternative to shooters, check out Splinter Cell. Great games, good control, good challenge. A solid FPS-like experience without the mouse headache.

For the RPG lover in you, Knights of the Old Republic is exceptional. One of the better Star Wars games around.

Have fun!

Thanks guys, great suggestions. Does xbox charge anything for online gaming yet? Also, is it cable modem only? I've got DSL and kind of knew that it would be a problem when I got it, but cabe service in our area is atrocious at the moment, so I don't quite trust it.

If you're asking if you have to pay for Xbox Live, I'm pretty sure the answer is yes.

Yeah, DSL is fine; any broadband connection should be sufficient.  You can either plug your Xbox directly into a router or modem, or you can buy a wireless adapter if you have a wireless network setup.

As for payment, the answer is yes, but it is a very small annual fee, something like $30 I believe.  Take a look here for info:

xbox needs a good roleplaying game that isn't infinitely better on pc. Oh and it definitely needs to get more first-person shooter like first-person shooters. Halo is hardly a contest for my attention compared to Half-life and all it's mods, and for multi-player might as well go PC Halo. Splinter cell would look interesting if it wasn't just a knock-off socom. I mean, come on, 15 shots to take out a lantern 20 feet away?

Quick Notes:

Brothers in Arms: EXCEPTIONAL.  If you like WWII at all, get it.

Gun: Brand new cowboy FPS.  I just got it and have only played the first mission or 3, but VERY nice.  Good production value and good game play.

RPG's:  Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire rival anything on any system.  Get them.

X-Box Live: One flat fee (around $50/year) for ALL online games, regardless of manufacturer.  Currently most poplular X-box live titles: Halo 2 (duh), Various flavors of Ghost Recon, and SW Battlefront II (EXCELLENT).  DSL should serve you fine.

Strategy: Shattered Union, just out, is a Turn based strategy game that is very nice.  Worth a look.

With the 360 just days away, you should be able to find X-box titles cheap real soon.

Happy Gaming

Midway Arcade Classics or something. It has the old skewl Mortal Kombat (fun!).

I don't play my X-Box much at all these days. Makes me wish I just spent the
money paying down debt. I know that I won't be buying a 360 at all.

X-men Rise of Apocalypse 2 is good so far. I've put maybe 4 hours into it
and stopped playing due to time constraints.

I may pick up Shattered Union when all of X-box becomes bargain bin.

I regret breaking my PS2 as I really enjoyed the games I played on there. The
truly sad part is that as soon as I get an X-box they came out with games
that have my name written all over them on the PS2...

So sad...

Xbox Live is a phenomenal price considering the fact that it is an annual fee. It really is cheap when compared to absolutely any other service offered today. I'd actually be surprised if they make a profit from it.

Not FPS's, but if you like quirky original games, I can recommend two:

Psychonauts & Stubbs the Zombie.

The former is a platformer that appears "kiddie" oriented at first, but soon delves into the most amazing level design I have ever seen in a video game. A must play game.

The latter is a quirky title where you play the role of a zombie whose goal is to eat brains. Every enemy you kill rises from the dead to join your zombie army. The game has a wicked sense of humor and is quite fun (although short).

Kill All Humans might be for a brainless romp of shooting (not sure, but I think that's the title)

I though Kill All Humans looked kind of cool, but I haven't played it.

Is it any fun?

An older game that doesn't get much mention is Jet Set Radio Future, which has great (if a bit challenging) gameplay, terrific music, and cell graphics.  You should be able to pick it up pretty cheaply.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

My brief dalliance with the game suggests its strictly rental, but fun rental.

I'd consider it if I were in college and subscribing to Gamefly.
