Thanks. The mage/healer/whatever she is was really easy to paint--she's about 90% cloak, after all.

I started putting paint on the Marines:

I'm leaning into the shiny rather than the traditional edge highlights. It works in some spots, not so well in others. In previous iterations of the Samurai Marines, I hand painted the lacing on the kusazuri and sode, but it didn't look right to my much older eyes. I went back and sculpted the lacing where appropriate, and it looks better. Obviously, it would have been much easier and much neater to add it to the plasticard before assembly, and I'll likely do that with the next batch.

Another samurai marine mostly finished:

I'm pretty happy with the color of the armor. Sengoku-era armor was mostly black lacquer, but a dark rusty color was also quite common. I've been trying off and on for years to achieve the effect, and I think I succeeded with this dude. After seeing these photos, I went back and smoothed out the spot highlights and re-painted the helmet decoration. The arms are a little awkward, and would probably have benefitted from some cutting and repositioning.

These are really excellent! I think the arm positioning on the second Samurine is good- very "ready guard" position.

Will leaders/sergeants/specialty figures get the back banner (kohn?) or not a good look with what is already a fantastic idea brought to execution?

Rock on!

I won't be freehanding them. Many years ago, I picked up what would turn out to be a lifetime supply of waterslide transfer paper. I have enough crane transfers for at least a hundred models.

And here are the Samurai Marines, all finished:

I tried to base these guys on historical armors, but of course no one in 15th century Japan wore power armor, so there will be some differences. The sculpted lacing was time-consuming and required several scrapings and resculpts to get as good as it is. I think I have the process down, just in time to be finished with this project. For the helmet flash, I used a few different sources. From top to bottom: actual "hemlet flash" bits from Dixon, a blob of leftover putty that I flattened out and stuck on, the top half of an old Epic-scale Eldar Exarch, and some horns from a sprue of Chaos hounds. I mentioned in a previous comment that I would be adding sashimono, but now I'm not so sure, as they would make the models much harder to store.

Here are the photos I'll be sharing in the Dakka Challenge thread:

It's been a lot of trial and error. I still see mostly flaws, but they work well enough at arm's length.

After I finished this lot, I noticed that I had a lot of leftover parts still on my painting station:

So I built a sergeant:

Which takes me up to a demi-squad:

Remember earlier in the month, when I said that I had finished the Amazons? That may have been a lie. I found these two tucked away in my To Be Painted drawer:

This should be the last of them. Finally, I cranked out this Chaos Thug that had been sitting, primed but otherwise untouched, on the painting station for a while:

I'm glad you like him-- he went together pretty quickly now that I've figured out all the steps involved. I look forward to seeing more of the Samurai Skaven.

I've imposed a buying moratorium on myself for the year (I've already broken it, but only because the models were on backorder for a couple of months), and am trying to finish off projects and collections that have been sitting in the Closet of Shame for years and years. These next three models have been in a drawer under my painting station for a long time. First, a valkyrie from Bad Squiddo:

She came with the Shieldmaidens KS. I based her on Marvel's Valkyrie-- the comics version, not MCU.

Next, a couple of Oldhammer elves:

These old Jes Goodwin elves remain some of my favorite models. Their long, craggy faces are so easy to paint, and the leaf-shaped blades are just made for NMM.

Here's a group shot:

I have a few more miscellaneous models in the pipeline. The theme for the April Challenge is "Let's Finish This," and I have something kind of weird in mind. I'm looking forward to it.

You are too kind, sir. I am at least trying to keep my spending and acquiring to a minimum. I won't live forever, and I don't want to leave too huge a pile of unpainted models when I'm gone.

Llamahead wrote:Those Elves really look alien unlike many I've seen.

Oh, yeah, these early Jes Goodwin models really don't look human, do they.

Continuing the theme of Getting Stuff Finished, here are a couple of Japanese models, a maiko and geisha:

This first one is, I believe, a Zenit model. I actually watched a couple of makeup tutorials to figure out how to do the face. The eyes themselves are terribly sculpted, but the rest of the model was easy to work with.

This second one is a Lo5R/Clan War model. I had a little more trouble with this one, as she doesn't seem to be Japanese-- there are some weird detailing about the shoulders, and I couldn't identify the hairstyle. She seems to be "asian" rather than Japanese. She's also holding the shamisen backwards. I tried to paint her base like tatami mats, as she likely wouldn't be kneeling in the dirt to play.

Here they are together:

The theme for April's Challenge is "Let's Finish This." I have a couple of options. First, there's this Harlequin Dreadnought I started close to thirty years ago:

Second, the rest of my metal Fellowship of the Ring:

I'll work on both and enter whichever I am happier with.
