Hrm. How many bastions would I need to make 4' of city wall? Anyone know off hand how long each panel is?

Went with 3. Each wall unit is about 3.5" so if I line them all up I get about 42" of wall. I'll have to build a back wall but this is a long-awaited project so why not.

The wall of martyrs I expected to be expensive, because well... Why not. But the price on the other pieces just makes me sad. The Defense Line used to sell for $40AUD, MTO for $84. Bastion: $50, MTO for $110. Skyshield (pretty sure) was $60, up to $110 MTO.

I was really prepared to shift a few funds around to grab at least one of each and maybe a 2nd bastion if the prices hadn't been too high. Oh well. Money saved for other things I guess.

I potentially want the Bastion bulkhead sections to form the outer shell of my long-dreamed of Leviathan.

I was thinking of dropping in for four Bastions. For some reason, I never picked them up at the time of 5th Ed and Planetstrike.

Dunno if it's different in Australia post conversion but I was pleasantly surprised by the UK prices.

Heck, I'm not even sure if the basing kits dropped down £2.50.

So I thought about what it would take to scratch build the rear walls and said @#$% it. Kids don't need to go to college.

6 bastions!

I support this plan.

Do you know, that cannon on the front looks like the rubber plumbing gadget I have on standby.

I'm thinking of cheating and arranging a foamboard hull over the top of an Action Man/ GI Joe style tank toy. Cheaper than hacking up Baneblades.

I was not around into 40k at that time, and really like that Bastion and Martyr bunker!

Bastion looks quite chunky and a great piece! Might one, tempted by two!

Martyr bunker from previous searches I think is relatively small, but love the look and should looks great on a table!

Yes, the Wall of Martyrs bunker is compact, see the picture with the helpful Cultist below. You can have ten sensibly posed models on 25mm bases on top. With how everything got embiggened since the bunker's release, and more importantly base size inflation, you'll probably struggle to fit eight models on 32mm bases on the bunker even if some bases hang over the rear. Not to mention a Primaris Marine might look silly hiding behind a knee high wall. Still good for Guard and Cultists, though.

But yeah, it's a cool terrain piece and one of my favorites. Was a good time when I could buy and deploy one for my army.

Awesome, thanks for the pic! Didn't even know there was a wall at the back, since it match with the trenches I thought it would be open at the back!

Just placed my order and got 1 Bastion and 2 Bunkers

It's not designed to have models placed inside, no.

Damn it, I hate helping GW get people's money!

May as well add add some more pictures from different angles:

Spoiler:

You can see on the sides that I cut a hole in the side of the bunker to accommodate the small peg the trench lines use to slot into each other. I haven't had the thing in my hands in ages, but the inside of the bunker might even have thinner walls in the right places to help you with that if you prefer is as part of a defense line instead of sitting by itself. The side doors are elevated and you get a flush fit that way.

The back door isn't designed that way, so you'll have to put up with a small gap if you want to put a trench there. Not terrible, but not as elegant either.

 Fugazi wrote:

The inside is hollow and there is no floor. You can fit models in there if you want to, but since it requires you to lift up the bunker, it's a bit inelegant without models on the roof and very inconveniencing if you have a squad up there. Mind you that the height of the firing slits aligns with the previous Imperial Guard Heavy Weapon Teams. Looks good for a Marine or Sister with a heavy bolter or similarly low weapon, but isn't suitable for heavy weapons sitting on a Marine's shoulder. And again with the embiggened models we have these days, I don't even know if a modern Marine fits inside.

Ah! Don't worry, it's been ages that I ordered directly from GW, so there's that! Plus I controlled myself and did not bought any of the new Tyranids (yet) that were released But they gonna get my money one way or another

I'll see when I get it in hand, but maybe I'll skip the back plate to have it open, might be easier to have some minis in there and whatnot during the game!

How well do these work mixed with Mantic sci-fi scenery stuff?

Sounds cool. Maybe with one supporting strut in the middle to go with the step in the roof. I don't remember if there are any ungainly negative spaces in the interior walls, but I think you'd have to add something so the interior behind the side doors isn't just a blank wall. If you leave off the back wall, installing a thin floor wouldn't go amiss either. Maybe even extend it out back and have some sandbags and crates for some cover to the rear. Could be lots of fun, and is definitely more practical if you want the interior occupied.

True.

 mattl wrote:

I can't say with any authority since I've only used Mantic pieces by themselves (plasticard aside), but since the basic building pieces are what, 3" by 3" tiles? As long as you find a straight wall on one of the GW kits, they should go together easily enough.

For the Bastion that means you have to cut a Mantic tile to fit the slanted base of the Bastion. Aside from that the Bastion is pretty smooth with little extra bits to get in the way.

The Wall of Martyrs bunker may be a bit harder to work with. The sides are plain enough, but the bunker isn't very tall. I think Mantic tiles may be taller than that.

I think the big thing might be style mismatch. Not sure I know all of Mantic's terrain kits, but you have clean, generic sci-fi buildings and brick buildings. Versus GW's blinged up concrete and riveted metal look. You would probably want to throw on some plasticard strips and rivets to get a more unified look.

Pipes, machinery and odds and ends don't seem like they'd be hard to incorporate.

That's my best guess anyway.

Anyone know if the 'Made in China' MOTO kits, are now being made in the U.K? Might justify the cost at least...

No it's just Australia tax that GW tack on to everything. Everything is operating at normal. Except for possibly my brain for hoping they wouldn't have went with ridiculous prices.

What scenery kits were made in china again? I know the basing detail kit was. Or at least I assume it was as the quality was garbage.

Man, the Wall of Martyrs is such a great kit. I was lucky enough to pick up the big box deal when it was first released. Adding the later Firestorm Redoubt gave me over 6 feet of trenches.

Here’s (most) of it in action:

That big box was very cool. I got two of them the second they went on order.

I want to eventually do a "Good vs Evil" table, with the Wall of Martyrs on one side and the Dreadhold on the other.

Terrain there looks amazing, Gordy.

If it was me I wouldn't mind spares because I don't expect myself to think things through without the kind of time a made to order window doesn't afford.

Leaving my poor planning and paranoia aside, I have to wonder. Traditionally you would play 40k on a 72" x 48" board. Is 42" of wall actually enough for your purpose? It's not going to cover the width of a normal board.
