Codex: Grey Knights (2011) - Inquisition HQ Review

Introduction

This is is Second part of my Grey Knight HQ review, with this section Focusing on the Inquisitors.

Part 1: Codex: Grey Knights (2011) - HQ Review

Inquisitor Coteaz

Another return from the dead, And Coteaz has taken a 85 point price drop. But, he gets loads of special rules. Although he did break his hammer, so he got a master-crafted one instead.
His bird also died, so he got a new one which attacks the enemy instead of giving him some cool rules. Reason for this? Ask Mat Ward.

His statline is the same as a normal inquisitor, and so is Wargear except for his hammer and birdie. Weirdly, he also comes with mastery level 2 with 3 psychic powers. We never knew he had more power than a librarian!

But it's his special rules that make him really valuable. His "Spy network" rule gives you the decision of re-roiling any seize the initiative , Even if your opponent has succeeded. This is brutal in alpha-strike lists, since it's almost certain that if you go first, you won't be seized.

His other unique rule, "I've been expecting you" Allows the squad he is with to shoot at any squad that deep-strikes within 12". Amazing Defending gunlines, especially with his "Sanctuary" Psychic power.

But his most amazing rule is that he makes henchmen troops. Yes, that means jokaero, Death-cult assassins and Psykers are troops!

Inquisitor Karamazov

Hold on, some bloke on a dreadnought sized throne just walked in the room. Oh wait, Karamazov's now in the codex? Right...
Games workshop have now put all the inquisitors in one codex, something I wasn't expecting. Ah well, at least that means we can have the dreadnought wannabee In our grey knight lists.

OK, on to his rules. His statline has taken a drop, as has his price. Oh, and the servitors no longer count as part of his wargear, he comes with a MC multi-melta as standard. He also has a MC power sword. And 4 different types of grenades. and he has an orbital strike relay. All of that with the throne of judgment. Blimey, I wish I was as rich as him.

Also, His OSR can be centered on a Friendly model, and in this case it won't scatter. This opens up some really cool opportunities with a callidus assassin. When she comes on, Put here in between 2 squads. kills the squad due to her shredder, and then karamazov Centers OSR on her. Overall though, 200 points is a massive drawback, and taking him means that's 200 points that's not doing much.

Inquisitor Valeria

First time I heard this, I thought the person was talking about Malaria.
Again, the normal inquisitor statline. Although the amount of wargear she was is ridiculous. She has power armour, a laspistol, frag, krak and psk-out grenades. That's just the standard wargear. This is the more exciting stuff!

She has a one shot railgun with a 12" range. Situational, since she can only fire it once and your opponent will stay away from her. She has a djin blade (Which she beat up Lady Malys for). She has a forceshield (Yriel fell before her wrath!), and a complex little thing called the Hyperstone Maze. This means she can give up her close combat attacks to try to "acquire" another victim. They have to roll equal to or under their remaining wounds, or die. Also situational, since when are you going to be in combat with an independent character in combat that won't kill her, and then there are there unit to attack her as well.

Last of all, she has runes of destiny. (These eldar heroes are no match for a strength 3 WS 4 character!). This means her opponents have to re-roll their saves. She has a power weapon, which ignores saves. If you are going against units with invulnerable saves, you will die. Simple as. To be honest, she is a very situational character that could pop a tank (with other units in our army doing it better) or plow through some T3 guys, who then kill due to the T 3 and 3+.

Ordo Malleus Inquisitor

The cheapest HQ in the game. Obviously, Grey Knights had to have it.

For 25 points, you get a company commander with carapace Amour and I 4. It's not that impressive, since he's supposed to kill stuff in combat. I don't know about you, but this don't make sense. Why make a combat character who is rubbish in combat? Easy. He gives his whole squad stubborn, he can be a Psyker with either psychic communion or hammerhand (so is a quick way to give a squad +1 strength), and he allows you to take a squad of Henchmen. Pretty good eh?

Anyway, on to his upgrades.

Power sword: On a strength 3 character? No thanks.

Plasma pistol: On a 4+ save guy? I'll pass.

Combi-weapon: You can take better weapons elsewhere. Don't take it.

Power fist: You can take a Daemon hammer for the same points. Why take it?

Incinerator: Finally, a peice of wargear I would take. A quick and cheap way of adding a incinerator to a squad.

Daemonblade: You get 2 totally random powers from the chart. Considering there random, I would say this is a moderate peice of wargear.

Hellrifle: A Rail rifle with 36" range. Only ever take This if your putting him with a heavy shooty unit. Otherwise, don't take it.

Daemonhammer: Your not losing much on a I 4 character. So why not?

Power armour: If you value a 3+ over a 4+ 8 points, then take it.

Psybolt ammo: You have a Bolt Pistol. 5 points? Don't take it.

Empyrean brain mines: As I said in the other HQ article, Don't take it.

Servo skulls: Already been said in the other article.

Terminator Armour: For 40 points, your getting close to the price of a grey knight HQ. Inquisitors are ment to be a cheap and cheerful HQ, not competing with (gulp) Grey Knights. Although they do well in Terminator themed lists, Because it's a cheaper way of getting Psychic communion.

Psycannon: To take this, you have to take terminator armour, which pushes the cost of the HQ up even more. Although it is relentless, so it's worth taking.

Combi-weapon: Already said.

Psyker: This is an upgrade worth taking. With hammerhand, and put him with Death cult assassins. SCARY!
Or, Psychic communion. Terminator armour, and Deep strike with Mordrak on first turn. Next turn, Both him and Mordrak cast Psychic communion, and lots of Terminators/Paladins come crashing down.

Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor

Everything I said about the Malleus Inquisitor applies her as well, except the wargear.

Power sword: On a strength 3 character? No thanks.

Plasma pistol: On a 4+ save guy/girl? I'll pass.

Combi-weapon: You can take better weapons elsewhere. Don't take it.

Inferno pistol: Hah, Grey knight inquisitors have better Inferno pistols than Witchhunters. Anyway, a 6" melta gun is not worth taking, especially for 10 points.

Power fist: The malleus Inquisitor can take this as well, Why bother? You should be taking this inquisitor because Of it's unique Wargear.

Condemnor Boltgun: Wooo, A strength 5 lasgun. Yes it causes Perils on psykers, but when are psykers ever going to be alone? Only thing I can think of is Daemon princes and Tyranid Psykers. But then, it's not a Take-all-comers. Don't take it.

Thunder hammer: The malleus Inquisitor can take a Daemonhammer for 5 points less, And it's better. Don't take it.

Null rod: 25 points for a power weapon that causes instant death on Psykers and His squad isn't affected by psychic powers. Oh, hey Tau! Oh what's that? You Have no psychic powers, and I'll be lucky if I'm in combat with you. What a waste of 25 points.

Servo skulls: If had a pound for every servo skull in the codex, I could buy a new army.

Power armour: If you value a 3+ over a 4+ 8 points, then take it.

Psyocculum: Every unique pice of wargear in this entry is not Take-all-comers. Shame. Don't take this wargear, And don't take the Inquisitor at all unless your Tailoring.

Psyker: Not on this Inquisitor.

End

Thanks for reading until the end, And I hoped You enjoyed it.
